For UAE driving, the most fuel-efficient choice depends on your routes and charging access—not just the powertrain badge. A conventional hybrid suits drivers who want petrol refuelling with electric assistance; a plug-in hybrid pays off most when you can charge it regularly and make many trips within its electric range; an EV is practical when its range and a dependable charging plan cover your regular travel. Compare equivalent UAE-market trims and ownership costs before choosing.
Start with how and where you drive
Before comparing cars, map your actual week. Estimate your annual kilometres, the typical length of each trip, how much driving is urban and stop-and-go versus highway, and whether your regular parking includes dependable charging. Also account for passengers, luggage and the roads you use.
These details determine whether a powertrain’s strengths fit your routine. A vehicle that looks efficient on a single rating may not be the right choice if its charging needs or trip range do not suit your life.
Choose the powertrain that fits your routine
Petrol
A petrol car may fit drivers who need straightforward refuelling and do not have reliable charging access. Compare its fuel consumption with other candidates on the same basis, and consider expected annual fuel use alongside purchase price, service support and vehicle practicality.

Conventional hybrid
A conventional hybrid combines a petrol engine with electric assistance while retaining petrol refuelling. It can suit mixed driving when you want that refuelling convenience without relying on plugging in. Compare the specific model and trim rather than assuming every hybrid will deliver the same economy.
Plug-in hybrid
A plug-in hybrid can travel in full-electric mode for a limited distance, but that advantage depends on charging it routinely. It is most compelling when many regular trips fit within the vehicle’s electric range and you have practical access to charging at home, work or on your routes. If you rarely plug in, you may not make full use of its electric capability.
Electric vehicle
An EV has no petrol consumption, but choosing one still requires a practical range and charging plan. DEWA’s consumer FAQ gives a broad typical range of 200–700 km, depending on battery capacity and vehicle type; it is not a guarantee for a particular model or journey. Check the candidate’s model-specific range and whether it covers your regular travel, including longer trips.

Check charging before considering a plug-in vehicle
For an EV, and for a plug-in hybrid if you want to use electric driving regularly, confirm that charging works with your parking arrangements and usual routes. DEWA advises drivers to check its official site or smart app for current EV Green Charger locations and availability. Its FAQ also describes Guest Mode for people who are not registered in the charger initiative. A public charger map is useful, but it does not replace checking that charging is convenient when and where you need it.

Do not compare numbers until you know what each one describes. Match the model year, trim and powertrain, check that consumption uses the same units, and identify whether the figure is an official test-cycle rating, a manufacturer claim or a reported real-world result. None of these figures should be treated as a promise of your own UAE driving consumption.
A 2025 Gulf News comparison reports 25.49 km/l for a Toyota Camry Hybrid and attributes the figure to real-world UAE driving. The exact model year and trim are not identified in the report, so use it as a reported example—not as an independently verified figure, a universal result for Camry Hybrid models or an official ranking of UAE cars.

Work out the ownership costs and practical fit
Efficiency is one part of the decision. For each candidate that meets your needs, compare purchase or finance cost, estimated annual fuel or electricity cost, expected ownership period, warranty and local service support, passenger and cargo space, and any charging requirements. Use current local fuel prices or charging tariffs for your estimate; lower energy cost alone does not establish that a vehicle will cost less overall if its purchase price is higher.
DEWA directs buyers to dealerships for vehicle availability and cost because prices vary. Ask the dealer to confirm the exact UAE-market trim, its manufacturer efficiency data, warranty terms and service arrangements before purchase.

Use efficient driving and maintenance habits
Your habits affect fuel consumption regardless of the car you choose. Dubai RTA’s Light Motor Vehicle Handbook says a smooth driving style can save up to 10% of fuel used; this is the handbook’s stated potential, not a guaranteed saving for an individual driver. It also says a vehicle can use up to 25% more fuel at 100 km/h than at 80 km/h. Respect legal speed limits and drive at a safe speed for the conditions rather than treating that comparison as a reason to drive unsafely.
- Accelerate gradually and anticipate stops to reduce abrupt braking and stop-start driving.
- Avoid unnecessary stop-and-go trips where practical.
- Maintain the engine and use the fuel specified in the owner’s manual.
- Keep tyres at the pressure recommended in the vehicle manual.
Keep UAE policy and compliance in perspective
The UAE National Electric Vehicles Policy sets goals that include establishing a nationwide charging network and reducing transport-sector energy consumption by 20 per cent. That is a national policy goal, not a measured outcome, a forecast of an individual driver’s savings or evidence that a particular buyer receives an incentive. Check current local charging availability rather than assuming the policy goal means charging is convenient on your route.
The official UAE legislation record lists Cabinet Resolution No. 50 of 2024 on electric-car technical requirements as active, with an effective date of 31 May 2025. The resolution record alone does not establish whether an individual imported vehicle is eligible for registration. If buying an imported car, check the current official requirements and ask the dealer or relevant authority to confirm the vehicle’s eligibility.

Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Write down your normal trip distances, annual kilometres, highway and urban mix, and passenger or cargo needs.
- Decide whether dependable charging is available at home, work or near your regular routes.
- Shortlist vehicles that suit your use, then compare equivalent UAE-market model years, trims and powertrains.
- Check the basis and units for each efficiency figure; do not treat a reported or test-cycle number as your personal real-world result.
- Estimate annual energy costs using current local prices or tariffs, then weigh them against purchase or finance cost and expected ownership period.
- Confirm local availability, warranty, service support, charging needs and, for an imported vehicle, applicable registration requirements with current official information and the dealer.
