Usually, no. If your car is designed to run on a lower-octane grade, using a higher one does not by itself improve fuel economy. Choose the grade specified on the fuel-filler label or in the owner’s manual for your exact model, engine and market—not simply the most expensive grade available.
What “premium petrol” means in the UAE
In this question, “premium” usually means petrol with a higher octane rating, rather than a separate promise of better mileage. UAE suppliers commonly list E-Plus 91, Special 95 and Super 98. ADNOC describes these as grades for low-, medium- and high-compression engines respectively; Emarat describes Super 98 as suitable for high-performance cars and E-Plus 91 for most normal cars. Those are general supplier descriptions, not a substitute for the specification of a particular vehicle. See ADNOC’s fuel information and Emarat’s fuel information.
Octane rating indicates a fuel’s resistance to engine knock; a higher rating is not, on its own, a measure of energy content or fuel economy. Match the grade to the requirement stated by the manufacturer. If the manual permits more than one grade, compare only those permitted options.
Does a higher grade increase kilometres per litre?
ADNOC Distribution says that using higher-octane petrol than required by a lower-performance engine does not improve engine efficiency or enable more kilometres per litre. That is the supplier’s guidance, not the result of a controlled, UAE-wide test across vehicles. There is no established universal percentage by which Super 98 improves or reduces mileage compared with 91 or 95.
#1 Best Overall
- DESIGNED TO EXCEED EXPECTATIONS: Red Line complete SI-1 fuel system cleaner treatment for cleaning and preventing corrosion in fuel systems
- PERFORM AND PROTECT: Fuel additive cleans injectors, carburetors, valve and combustion chamber deposits with a powerful, concentrated blend of high-temp and low-temp detergents
- EFFICIENT FUEL BURN: Gas treatment that enhances gasoline stability, while reducing the build up of gum and varnish formation
- EASY TO USE: Use one bottle per tank for most effective treatment, additive cleans nearly 100% efficiency in one treatment
- 15 Ounce (2 Pack)
A higher grade may matter when the manufacturer specifies it, or when the manual describes a performance effect at a lower grade. For example, the July 2024 Mercedes-Benz MENA E-Class Saloon manual says that using 95 RON in the M 256M petrol engine may cause slight performance limitations, with no further consequences. That model-specific note is not evidence that 98 generally improves economy. Check the exact manual for your vehicle, such as the Mercedes-Benz MENA owner’s manual portal.
Choose the grade your car actually requires
- Read the fuel-filler label. Look for the required minimum octane and any wording about recommended or preferred fuel.
- Check the owner’s manual for the exact model year, engine and market. Distinguish a required minimum from a recommendation or a grade associated with maximum output.
- Follow the requirement. Do not assume the highest available grade is best, and do not use less than the specified minimum based on generic advice.
- If the wording is unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorised service centre using your vehicle details.
Compare cost per distance, not just price per litre
Fuel economy alone does not determine which permitted grade costs less to use. Compare actual consumption and the current pump price with this calculation:
Rank #2
- For best performance, follow the manufacturer's recommendations in your vehicle owner’s manual.
- Cleans, restores, protects the entire fuel system (fuel injectors, carburetors, intake valves and combustion chambers)
- Restores: lost power, acceleration, lost fuel economy, and operation of the fuel gauge sensor
- Reduces: rough idle, engine surge, hesitation, and spark plus fouling
- Improves: cold start performance, and fuel stability for up to one year
Cost per 100 km = (litres used ÷ kilometres driven) × 100 × price per litre.
For a fair comparison, use comparable routes, traffic, driving style, load and conditions. The cited figures do not establish a measured consumption difference for a particular car, so any result should come from your own comparable driving records rather than an assumed mileage gain.
Rank #3
- Restore power and performance - Restores lost power and performance by removing gum, varnish, and other fuel system deposits.
- Maximize fuel economy - Keeps engines clean, and protects from deposits that rob engine efficiency and reduce fuel economy.
- Protect the fuel system and fuel gauge sensor from various types of corrosion - Multiple corrosion inhibitors protect metal components (both ferrous components like iron and steel, and non-ferrous components like copper and silver) from the damaging effects of corrosion.
- Vehicles with higher mileage accumulation can suffer from the effects of age - including carbon build-up and corrosion in the fuel system. Techron High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner helps keep your engine humming, no matter how many roads your vehicle has traveled.
- Techron High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner is fully compatible and protective in all commercially available ethanol blends (E10, E85, etc).
