If your car warranty claim is denied, first identify whether the coverage is a manufacturer’s vehicle warranty or a separately purchased auto service contract, then ask the responsible party for the reason and the exact written term it relied on. Compare that explanation with your paperwork, gather relevant repair and maintenance records, and appeal in writing. If the dispute remains unresolved, the right next step depends on your contract, state, and claim.
First, identify which coverage denied the repair
“Extended warranty” often refers to an auto service contract, a product sold separately from the vehicle’s warranty. The two are not the same: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that an auto service contract is not a warranty as defined by federal law. A new car generally comes with a manufacturer’s vehicle warranty; used vehicles may also have some warranty coverage. The paperwork and its terms determine what applies to your car and repair. Find the warranty booklet, buyer paperwork, or service contract and note the named warrantor or contract seller, administrator, covered components, time and mileage limits, exclusions, maintenance conditions, prior-authorization requirements, claim procedure, and any dispute-resolution clause. A service contract may duplicate some factory coverage and generally covers only the work described in its terms.
Ask for the denial reason and the term behind it
Contact the dealership, manufacturer, service-contract seller, or administrator named in your documents. Ask what specific contract or warranty provision the decision relies on and what facts led to the denial. Request the explanation in writing so you can compare it with the actual terms and keep it with the claim record. This is a practical way to clarify and document the dispute; it does not guarantee a right to a particular form of explanation.

For a dispute about whether a separately purchased service-contract claim should be paid, the FTC says: “If you have a dispute about whether a claim should be paid, deal with the administrator.” For a manufacturer-backed vehicle warranty, follow the warranty’s contact and claim instructions; a dealership may decide warranty service and repairs. Build a record before appealing
Collect the documents relevant to this repair and make a short timeline. The FTC recommends keeping warranty and purchase records, documenting dates, expenses, and the names of people contacted, and retaining service records that show maintenance.

- The warranty or service contract and purchase records.
- The repair order, diagnostic results, estimate, and denial notice or correspondence.
- Maintenance receipts and records relevant to any maintenance condition cited.
- Dates, mileage, symptoms, shop visits, expenses, and names of people contacted.
Then compare the denial reason against the written terms. Check whether it concerns an exclusion, wear and tear, a repair not covered by the contract, a missed maintenance condition, lack of prior approval, expired time or mileage coverage, or disagreement about what caused the failure. These are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions about whether this particular denial is valid. Service-contract coverage varies by contract. Appeal to the party responsible under your paperwork
Send a concise written appeal using the channel and procedure in the warranty or service contract. In a service-contract dispute about payment, direct the appeal to the administrator. For a vehicle warranty, use the manufacturer’s or dealership’s stated process.

- Identify the vehicle, repair, claim, and denial date.
- Name the provision you believe covers the repair and explain why the available records support coverage.
- Attach copies—not originals—of relevant repair, diagnostic, maintenance, and purchase records.
- State the resolution you want, such as reconsideration and payment for the covered repair.
- Keep a copy of the complete appeal and a dated log of follow-up contacts.
If the appeal fails, choose an escalation route carefully
Options depend on the type of coverage, the contract, your state, and the amount at issue. Before filing or agreeing to a process, read the dispute-resolution language and check local rules. Some warranties require use of a qualifying dispute-resolution organization before a lawsuit; that requirement does not apply automatically to every warranty or claim.

When legal advice may be worthwhile
If a substantial dispute remains unresolved, a lawyer can assess whether the facts support a claim under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act or applicable state law. The FTC’s used-car guidance says consumers may sue under Magnuson-Moss for breach of express warranties, implied warranties, or service contracts; it also says successful claimants may recover reasonable attorneys’ fees and court costs. That does not establish that the Act applies to every denial or predict an outcome.
