In a four-stroke twin, the familiar choices are 180°, 270° and 360° crank phasing. They create different piston relationships and combustion intervals, but the final result also depends on the balance shaft, reciprocating mass, crank inertia, valve timing, engine speed and chassis.
If evenly spaced firing is the priority, a 360° crank gives 360°/360° combustion intervals. A conventional 180° crank gives the uneven 180°/540° pattern. A 270° crank gives 270°/450° intervals, creating a pulse pattern similar to a 90° V-twin while retaining a compact parallel-twin layout. Those are design options, not a ranking.

The three configurations at a glance
| Crank phasing | Piston relationship | Firing intervals in a 720° four-stroke cycle | Typical design emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 180° | Pistons move in opposite phase | 180° then 540° | Conventional parallel-twin layout; Yamaha describes it as advantageous at medium to high rpm when the rest of the engine is designed accordingly |
| 270° | Crank pins are 270° apart | 270° then 450° | Uneven, pulse-like delivery resembling a 90° V-twin’s firing rhythm while keeping a slim parallel-twin package |
| 360° | Pistons move together | 360° then 360° | Evenly spaced combustion events and a clearly felt twin-cylinder pulse; balance treatment is essential |
The intervals are angular distances between combustion events, not engine-speed measurements. At any rpm, the time between events changes with speed; the angular pattern remains fixed by the crank phasing and the four-stroke cycle.
What “firing order” means on a two-cylinder engine
Every cylinder needs 720 crank degrees to complete its cycle
A four-stroke cylinder passes through intake, compression, power and exhaust over two crankshaft revolutions, or 720 crank degrees. The crank-pin angle establishes how the two pistons are positioned relative to each other. The camshaft determines valve events, and the ignition system selects which top-dead-center occurrence is the compression firing event.

With two cylinders, the sequence normally alternates between cylinder 1 and cylinder 2. Therefore, saying “the firing order is 1-2” does not describe the engine’s character by itself. The important distinction is how far the crank turns from one combustion event to the next. That spacing follows from crank phasing together with the valve and ignition cycle.
Why the same two-cylinder sequence can feel different
Two engines can both alternate cylinders 1 and 2 yet deliver different pulse spacing. A 360° arrangement separates the combustion events evenly. A 180° arrangement places the second event soon after the first and then leaves a long gap. A 270° arrangement spreads the events asymmetrically in a different way. The rider perceives those intervals through acceleration, sound and driveline load, but perception is also shaped by exhaust layout, flywheel mass, gearing, throttle calibration and chassis isolation.
How each crank configuration behaves
180° crank: opposite-phase pistons and a long pause
In a 180° parallel twin, one piston rises while the other falls. The resulting combustion pattern is 180° followed by 540° before the cycle repeats. This is the conventional arrangement many riders associate with a rev-oriented parallel twin.
Yamaha’s technical explanation contrasts conventional 180° twins with 360° designs and notes that the former were considered advantageous at medium to high rpm. That is a manufacturer design rationale, not a universal performance rule: cam timing, bore and stroke, intake tuning, exhaust design, compression ratio, crank mass and electronic calibration can outweigh crank angle in a particular engine.
The opposite piston motion can reduce some first-order shaking forces compared with pistons moving together, but it introduces a rocking couple because the cylinders are separated along the crankshaft. The exact vibration level depends on cylinder spacing, reciprocating mass, crank stiffness, mounting, counterbalancer design and rpm. A 180° crank is not automatically smooth or harsh.
360° crank: even intervals and pistons moving together
A 360° crank places the crank pins together, so both pistons move in the same direction at the same time. The ignition events still alternate between the cylinders, producing equal 360° intervals across the 720° cycle.
Yamaha describes the typical 360° twin as an option when the rider should feel the characteristic pulses of a twin. Its even spacing can give a regular, deliberate cadence, and Yamaha associates this type of firing pulse with a low-speed torque character. Those are qualitative descriptions. They do not establish that every 360° engine produces more torque, better traction or lower vibration than another layout.

Because both pistons accelerate together, their primary inertial forces add rather than cancel. Historical and secondary engineering descriptions therefore characterize a 360° twin as having primary imbalance. Manufacturers can address that with a balance shaft, crank counterweights, carefully selected reciprocating mass and engine mounts. The effectiveness and side effects of those measures vary from engine to engine.
270° crank: uneven intervals with a compact package
A 270° crank offsets the crank pins by 270°. The resulting combustion intervals are 270° and 450°. Yamaha developed this arrangement to make the torque delivery more perceptible and pulse-like while retaining the short, narrow packaging advantages of a parallel twin.
The firing rhythm resembles that of a 90° V-twin, but the architectures are not the same. A 90° V-twin obtains its geometry from two cylinder banks arranged at right angles; a 270° parallel twin keeps both cylinders in one bank and achieves similar combustion spacing through crank-pin phasing. The similarity is in the intervals, not in cylinder layout, airflow paths, balance forces, cooling requirements or engine dimensions.
A secondary engineering account describes 270° twins as retaining a rocking couple and requiring a balancer shaft to counter unbalanced primary forces. Treat that as a general description, not a specification for every production engine. Some manufacturers use different shaft arrangements, crank counterweights or mounting strategies, and the resulting vibration cannot be predicted from crank angle alone.

Crank phasing is one input to an engine’s vibration signature. The complete design also includes:
- Reciprocating mass of pistons, rings, wrist pins and connecting rods.
- Crankshaft inertia and counterweight distribution.
- Balance-shaft number, phase and drive ratio.
- Crankcase, cylinder spacing and engine-mount stiffness.
- Operating speed range and the frequencies at which the engine is expected to spend time.
- Flywheel effect, clutch design and final-drive lash.
- Frame stiffness, rubber isolation and the rider’s contact points.
General labels such as “primary imbalance” or “rocking couple” explain the forces engineers must manage; they do not provide a universal smoothness ranking. The available sources do not contain controlled, directly comparable vibration or torque measurements for all three crank layouts. If smoothness is decisive, use measured data for the exact engine and model year, or ride the motorcycle in the operating range that matters to you.
Choose by use case rather than by crank angle alone
Step 1: Define the character you want
Write down whether you want a regular, evenly spaced pulse; a pronounced paired-pulse feel; or the conventional opposite-piston behavior of a 180° twin. Include sound and throttle response, but do not use exhaust sound as a substitute for mechanical information. Exhaust length, muffler volume and ignition mapping can change the impression without changing the crankshaft.

Step 2: Identify the operating range
For a motorcycle that spends much of its time at medium to high rpm, investigate the whole engine’s breathing, valve train, flywheel and balancing strategy. Yamaha’s account says its conventional 180° twins were viewed as advantageous in that range, but that statement should be checked against the specific engine’s power curve and vibration data.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor low-speed street riding, trail work or loaded touring, decide whether you value evenly repeated pulses or a larger gap between combustion events. A 360° design offers equal spacing; a 270° design offers the paired-pulse rhythm and traction character Yamaha sought. Neither choice guarantees a particular torque curve.
Step 3: Set your vibration tolerance
Consider the rpm at which your hands, feet and seat spend the most time. Ask for the balance-shaft arrangement and reciprocating-mass information when a manufacturer publishes it. A crank angle that looks attractive on paper may be a poor fit if the motorcycle’s mounts, gearing or riding position place an objectionable frequency at cruising speed.
Step 4: Check packaging constraints
Parallel twins keep both cylinders in one bank, which generally simplifies a slim chassis and leaves design freedom around the frame, intake and cooling system. Yamaha says its 270° development produced an engine shorter than a V-twin, giving the chassis designers more freedom. Exact dimensions still vary with gearbox placement, alternator position, airbox, exhaust routing and service access.
Step 5: Evaluate traction and throttle goals as a system
Firing intervals influence how frequently the rear tire receives a combustion pulse, but tire compound, wheelbase, swingarm geometry, traction control, throttle maps and final-drive gearing determine what the rider actually experiences. A 270° crank can support a pulse-like delivery; it does not by itself create superior traction.

Step 6: Compare complete motorcycles
When choosing between two production motorcycles, identify the exact model year and market. Compare manufacturer specifications and independent controlled tests for horsepower, torque, curb mass, gearing, vibration and fuel use. Do not transfer conclusions from one manufacturer’s 270° engine to another company’s design simply because the crank angle matches.
Step 7: Confirm durability and service implications
Ask how the crankshaft, balancer shaft, primary drive and clutch are designed for the intended duty cycle. More moving parts can add mass, friction and service requirements, while a heavier crank can improve flywheel effect but slow engine-speed changes. These are engineering tradeoffs that cannot be resolved by selecting 180°, 270° or 360° in isolation.

Does a 270-degree parallel twin fire like a 90-degree V-twin?
It fires with a similar interval pattern, not with the same architecture. Both arrangements can produce alternating combustion events separated by 270° and 450° of crank rotation. In the parallel twin, that pattern comes from crank-pin phasing; in the V-twin, it comes from the 90° angle between cylinder banks and the associated crank design.
The two engines can therefore share a pulse-like cadence while differing in primary forces, rocking couples, cylinder-head placement, cooling airflow, exhaust routing, engine width and service access. Use “similar firing rhythm” as the precise description, not “the same engine behavior.”

Yamaha says its 270° parallel-twin first appeared in the TRX850, introduced in 1995. The company links the work to research and development for its Paris–Dakar factory machines. In Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.’s engineering-history account, prototype riding in Algeria led engineers to associate the uneven firing interval with easier riding in the desert. Yamaha’s wording is: “While doing prototype test rides in the Algerian desert, the engine’s uneven firing interval (combustion) resulted in a machine that was easier to ride.”
That sentence is evidence of Yamaha’s own development experience, not a controlled statistical result for every rider, motorcycle or terrain. It supports why Yamaha selected the configuration for its engines; it does not prove that a 270° crank is objectively better for all off-road or street use.
Yamaha’s separate technical explanation, dated 16 November 2011, describes the 270° engine’s repeated 270°/450° firing intervals and contrasts them with the conventional 180° and 360° arrangements. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan’s 2021 review of new motorcycle engines is useful context for how manufacturers describe crank and firing changes, but its cited Tiger 900 example is a three-cylinder engine, not evidence for a parallel-twin comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workshop method for checking crank phasing
You do not need to measure a crank angle to understand the choice between factory engines. Measurement becomes useful when identifying an unknown engine, verifying a rebuild or studying a modified crankshaft. A crankshaft degree wheel and a dial indicator are workshop instruments, not required buying equipment.
- Obtain the manufacturer’s service information and confirm the engine’s cylinder numbering, firing sequence and true top-dead-center procedure.
- Remove the spark plugs and disable fuel and ignition systems so the engine cannot start.
- Find true top dead center with a positive-stop method or dial indicator. Do not assume the factory timing mark is perfectly centered without verification.
- Mount a degree wheel securely to the crankshaft and establish a fixed pointer on the crankcase.
- Record the top-dead-center position of each piston and calculate the angular separation of the crank pins or piston events.
- Rotate the engine through two complete crank revolutions and mark which top-dead-center events coincide with compression and ignition timing.
- Reassemble and set all timing marks, fasteners and safety systems to the service-manual specification.
This procedure identifies geometry; it does not measure vibration, torque delivery or rider comfort. Stop if the engine’s construction requires a method not covered by the service information.

Common mistakes when selecting a parallel-twin configuration
Assuming “270°” is a complete specification
The number says how the crank pins are phased. It does not specify the balancer shaft, flywheel mass, cam timing, ignition map, exhaust, clutch or engine mounts. Two 270° engines can feel substantially different.
Confusing pulse spacing with torque output
Firing intervals alter the delivery pattern, but peak torque and the shape of the torque curve depend on displacement, airflow, compression, valve timing, friction and calibration. A pulse you prefer is not automatically a stronger engine.
Calling one layout “smooth” without defining the condition
An engine can feel smooth at cruising speed and coarse near its rev limit, or vice versa. Always specify the rpm, load, gear and rider contact point when discussing vibration.
Using sound as the deciding test
Exhaust systems and ignition maps can make different crank layouts sound alike, while similar-sounding engines can transmit different forces through the chassis. Sound is a preference, not a balance measurement.
Generalizing from one motorcycle
Yamaha’s TRX850 history and desert-testing account explain one company’s development path. They do not establish a universal result for every 270° motorcycle. Model year, market specification and updates matter.
A decision framework you can use before buying or designing
| Your priority | Configuration to investigate first | What to verify before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Evenly spaced combustion pulses | 360° | Primary-balance treatment, counterbalancer design, cruising-rpm vibration and flywheel mass |
| Conventional opposite-phase piston motion and a 180°/540° pattern | 180° | Rocking-couple management, high-rpm behavior, crank inertia and the manufacturer’s measured torque curve |
| Pulse-like delivery similar to a 90° V-twin in a compact parallel-twin package | 270° | Balancer-shaft arrangement, throttle calibration, traction-control strategy, engine width and whole-bike vibration |
| Lowest possible vibration | No automatic winner | Controlled measurements or a careful ride of the exact motorcycle across your normal rpm range |
| Best chassis packaging | Usually compare parallel-twin designs first | Actual engine dimensions, gearbox position, cooling, airbox, exhaust and service access |
The bottom line for your choice
Select 360° when equal 360°/360° intervals and a regular twin pulse are central to the brief. Select 180° when the conventional opposite-phase layout and its 180°/540° rhythm fit the intended speed range and the engine’s balance system is properly engineered. Select 270° when you want 270°/450° pulse spacing resembling a 90° V-twin while preserving parallel-twin packaging.
Then validate the choice against the complete engine and motorcycle: counterbalancing, reciprocating mass, crank inertia, durability, gearing, chassis isolation and measured behavior. Crank angle sets the starting conditions; the finished motorcycle determines whether those conditions work for you.
