For a comfortable, dependable used Japanese compact SUV, start with the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4—then judge the specific year, trim, condition, records, and local price. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists selected years of all four as above-average-reliability used vehicles; it does not certify every vehicle bearing those model names. The CX-5 and Forester have the clearest comfort positives in the cited ratings, while a test drive is essential to find the right fit for you.
Which used Japanese SUV should you shortlist?
These are compact SUVs, so they are a sensible starting point if you want a practical two-row vehicle. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide selects particular model years rather than treating every year as equally reliable. Its selections are a filter for your search, not a guarantee about an individual car.

The comfort observations come from ratings of 2025 new vehicles, not a direct test of every used model year in the guide. Treat them as clues to investigate in an older vehicle, not proof that its ride or cabin will feel the same.

- Start with the CX-5 if a quiet cabin and comfortable ride are high priorities; check rear visibility and whether its controls suit you.
- Try the Forester if easy visibility and rear-seat room matter; pay attention to acceleration, especially in the base version.
- Consider the CR-V if interior space, straightforward controls, and easy entry and exit are important; listen for cabin noise on your test drive.
- Test the RAV4 carefully rather than paying a premium for its name alone; assess ride and engine noise in the exact vehicle.
If you need three rows or substantially more passenger space, this four-model compact-SUV shortlist may not fit. The cited comparisons do not evaluate larger SUVs in depth.
How to tell whether the asking price is fair
Compare vehicles that are genuinely alike: same generation and model year where possible, similar trim and drivetrain, mileage, title status, accident history, service records, tire condition, and overall condition. Include taxes, fees, inspection costs, immediate maintenance, and repairs in your calculation. An attractive asking price can conceal deferred work or an incomplete history; a strong reputation does not by itself justify a premium.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide places selected model years in broad used-price brackets. Its listed CR-V examples span $10,000–$40,000; CX-5 examples, $10,000–$30,000; Forester examples, $20,000–$30,000; and RAV4 examples, $5,000–$40,000, including hybrids. These are guide ranges assigned to selected years, not live valuations for a specific vehicle.

A separate IIHS and Consumer Reports page, Safe vehicles for teens, reports median retail prices of $13,100 for Mazda CX-5 model years 2018–25 built after March 2018, and $15,900 for Subaru Forester model years 2019–25. The figures use Black Book data from April 2026 and are rounded to the nearest $100. They are broad medians in a list intended to identify safe vehicles for teens—not equivalent-trim comparisons or appraisals of individual cars. Check current local listings before using either figure to judge an offer.
What a useful comparison looks like
Build a small set of local comparables with matching year or generation, trim, drivetrain, mileage, title and accident history, and condition. Then adjust your view of each asking price for tires, documented service, known repairs, included fees, and inspection findings. If the best comparison differs substantially in equipment or condition, it is not a clean price match.

How to choose and verify a specific vehicle
- Set an all-in budget. Reserve money for tax, title, registration, insurance, inspection, immediate maintenance, and unexpected repairs—not just the advertised price.
- Filter by model year, then verify the vehicle. Use Consumer Reports’ selected years as a starting point. Confirm the exact trim and powertrain, recall completion, and maintenance requirements for the vehicle you are considering.
- Compare local listings on like-for-like terms. Note generation, trim, drivetrain, mileage, title and accident history, service records, tire condition, and fees. Do not infer value from a model-level price band alone.
- Test-drive the exact SUV. Use city streets and a highway if practical. Check seat shape and adjustment, entry and exit, visibility, road and wind noise, rough-road ride, controls, cargo fit, and rear-seat comfort with the passengers who will use it.
- Get a history report and independent inspection. Review the inspection estimate alongside the asking price. If a seller will not allow reasonable verification, be prepared to walk away.
- Negotiate on evidence and total cost. Use documented comparable listings and inspection findings. Compare the out-the-door price rather than focusing on a monthly payment.
What reliability ratings can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports says its 2026 guide’s listed model years have above-average reliability. It also notes that some vehicles came with backup cameras and active-safety features standard or optional when new; equipment varies by year and trim, so verify what the particular SUV has. The organization describes its reliability resource as based on responses to its Annual Auto Surveys. The guide selection is not a prediction that every used example will be trouble-free, and the cited material does not establish the condition of any particular vehicle.
History, maintenance, and present condition can outweigh a model’s reputation. Ask for service and title records, check that recalls have been addressed, and have an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle before committing. A ranking or guide can help narrow the search; it cannot replace examining the car you may buy.
