Rivian says third-party repairs are possible. It recommends Rivian Service Centers or Mobile Service for appropriate work and identifies Rivian Certified locations for collision repairs, diagnostics, and calibrations. Can you use a third-party shop for a Rivian?
Yes. Rivian’s consumer service FAQ says an owner can use a third-party repair shop. For collision damage, however, Rivian directs owners toward its certified collision network and emphasizes that the work must follow applicable Rivian repair information. A shop’s general experience with battery-electric vehicles is not the same as Rivian certification.
Rivian’s repair guideline, identified as RCI-98-23-002-3: Rivian Repair Guidelines and dated 2023 in indexed material, states: “To ensure proper operation, safety, and durability of the Rivian vehicle, all collision repairs should be performed by a Rivian Certified Technician, with Rivian approved tooling, at a Rivian Certified Collision Center.” Treat that as the technical benchmark, while confirming the current procedure for your vehicle before work begins.

Rivian Service Centers and Mobile Service may be suitable for certain inspections or non-collision work, but a collision shop must be equipped for the physical repair, structural measurement, electronic diagnostics, and calibrations that the damage requires.
Start with the shop’s exact Rivian certification
Do not accept “Rivian approved” as an unexplained marketing phrase. Rivian’s network application distinguishes several kinds of locations and capabilities. Ask the manager to identify the current certification and the operations it covers for your vehicle.

A certificate or listing does not eliminate the need to discuss the job. Certification can be narrower than the work on your vehicle. Request the shop’s current Rivian status in writing or verify it through Rivian, then ask whether the planned repair is within that status.

Match the shop to the damage, not just the vehicle badge
A minor bumper replacement, a damaged suspension corner, a crushed rocker, and possible battery-case intrusion can require very different equipment and procedures. Before comparing prices, have the candidate shop inspect the actual vehicle or review clear photographs and towing information. A preliminary estimate made without disassembly is not a final repair plan.
Structural damage
Ask whether the shop performs structural measurement and repairs on Rivian vehicles. Rivian’s guidance calls for an approved frame-bench system and specified model-appropriate fixturing or jigs when the operation requires them. A conventional frame machine without the required fixtures may not be an acceptable substitute. The written plan should identify measuring, setup, straightening or replacement operations, and the quality checks used to verify dimensions.

Non-structural body damage
Panels, closures, glass, lighting, suspension parts, and trim can still affect sensors, wiring, sealing, and alignment. Ask how the shop will inspect adjacent components after removing damaged parts and how it will decide whether a supplement is necessary. “Cosmetic” damage should not be assumed to be limited to visible paint or sheet metal.
Driver-assistance and electronic systems
Damage near cameras, radar-related components, wiring, wheel alignment, suspension, or body mounting points may require diagnostics or calibration even when the vehicle can be driven. The shop should explain which systems are being checked, which calibrations are required by the applicable Rivian procedure, and how the result will be documented.

Use these questions in the first call and ask for specific answers rather than assurances:
- Are you currently a Rivian Certified Collision Center for passenger vehicles, and does that certification cover this repair?
- Who will perform the work, and how will the technician access the current Rivian service procedures?
- Which Rivian-approved tooling, measuring equipment, frame bench, and fixtures will be used?
- Will the vehicle receive diagnostic scans before and after repairs?
- Does the damage require calibration diagnostics, and who performs and records those calibrations?
- What inspection will be made for battery or high-voltage damage?
- How will you document parts, measurements, scans, calibration results, and completed operations?
Rivian’s guideline calls for scans before and after collision repairs. The purpose is to identify diagnostic trouble codes, clear codes when appropriate, and confirm that systems operate correctly after the repair. Ask for copies of the scan results or a repair record showing what was checked, rather than relying on a verbal “no warning lights” statement.
Ask how high-voltage risks will be assessed
Any collision that may have affected the battery enclosure, orange high-voltage cables, high-voltage components, or their mounting areas deserves a specialist assessment. Rivian’s guideline says the applicable service procedures determine whether the high-voltage system must be de-energized before work. The correct decision depends on the damage and the procedure for the vehicle, not on whether the vehicle starts normally.

Ask the shop:
- Who is responsible for assessing possible high-voltage or battery damage?
- Which current Rivian procedure governs that inspection?
- What signs would require isolation, towing, quarantine, or referral?
- How will the assessment and any de-energizing or re-energizing work be recorded?
A shop that cannot explain who makes this determination, or that proposes working around suspected high-voltage damage without consulting Rivian procedures, is not a suitable choice for that repair.

Require a written, itemized repair plan
Obtain the estimate and repair plan before authorizing disassembly or repairs when practical. The document should distinguish confirmed damage from items that require teardown to verify. It should list parts, labor operations, materials, scans, calibrations, structural measurement, corrosion protection, paint work, alignment, and any required inspections.
Ask how supplements are handled. Hidden damage is common after a collision, and a responsible shop should explain when it will stop, photograph the finding, update the estimate, and seek insurer approval. Clarify whether you will be asked to approve a supplement directly and how a disagreement about repair scope will be resolved.
Rivian describes review and approval of a repair plan through its service process, but local shop availability, insurer procedures, and payment rules vary. The plan you receive should identify who is responsible for each approval and what happens if the insurer disputes a required Rivian operation.
Compare shops on the same decision criteria
When two or more qualified shops are available, give each the same damage information and compare their answers in a single checklist. A lower initial estimate can become more expensive or slower if it omits required procedures, diagnostics, or parts.

Coordinate the shop with your insurer
In many jurisdictions you may have a choice of repairer, but policy language, state or provincial rules, and insurer network arrangements affect payment and administrative requirements. Ask your insurer what is required for an estimate, teardown, rental, supplements, and payment. Do not assume that an insurer’s preferred network is the same as Rivian’s certified network.
Tell the adjuster that the vehicle is a Rivian and ask the shop to identify Rivian-required procedures in the estimate. If an insurer omits a scan, calibration, structural fixture, or other operation, ask the shop to explain the requirement in writing and provide the relevant procedure reference through its normal professional channels. Keep emails, estimate versions, photographs, approvals, and supplement decisions together.
Before signing an assignment of benefits or authorizing repairs, understand who can approve additional work, who is responsible for storage charges during a dispute, and whether you can move the vehicle if the shop cannot obtain the needed approval or equipment.

Ask for separate estimates for parts arrival and hands-on repair time. A vehicle can wait for a component, a calibration appointment, insurer approval, or a specialized fixture even after the physical work has started. The shop should identify the current constraint rather than promise a single completion date with no assumptions.
Towing and storage
Confirm whether the shop arranges the tow, where the vehicle goes first, and when storage charges begin. If the vehicle is not safe to drive or high-voltage damage is possible, ask whether it must be transported under a specific condition or to a facility capable of the required assessment.

Transport, rental, and loaners
Get written terms for a loaner, rental reimbursement, rides, or vehicle transport. Ask about daily limits, eligibility, extensions when parts are delayed, and who pays if the repair takes longer because a supplement is discovered. These benefits are commonly controlled by the insurance policy or a separate shop program, so verify them before leaving the vehicle.
Follow a repeatable selection process
- Document the incident. Photograph every visible area, warning message, wheel position, underbody area that can be safely viewed, and the vehicle identification information. Do not drive a vehicle that may be unsafe.
- Open the claim and ask about choice of shop. Record the adjuster’s contact information, inspection requirements, rental limits, and supplement process.
- Find candidate Rivian locations. Use Rivian’s current certified-location information, then call each shop to confirm it is accepting vehicles and that its certification is current.
- Describe the damage and ask for scope confirmation. Explain the model, model year, collision area, drivability, warning messages, and any suspected battery or cable damage. Ask whether the shop can perform every planned operation or will coordinate a referral.
- Obtain a written plan. Require itemized parts and operations, scan and calibration allowances, structural procedures where relevant, assumptions, and the supplement process.
- Compare logistics and total responsibility. Put appointment timing, parts uncertainty, towing, storage, rental or loaner terms, insurer communication, and warranty terms beside the technical comparison.
- Authorize only after scope is clear. Make sure the authorization identifies the shop, the approved work, and how additional operations will be approved.
- Collect completion records. Before accepting the vehicle, obtain final invoices, scan and calibration documentation, parts information where available, measurements or quality checks for structural work, and warranty terms.
Inspect the finished repair before taking delivery
Arrange a delivery review in daylight when possible. Confirm that body gaps, closures, glass, lamps, wheels, tires, sensors, trim, paint finish, and underbody shields match the agreed repair. Ask the shop to demonstrate that warning messages are absent and that the vehicle has completed the required post-repair scan and calibration checks.
Review the invoice against the final estimate and supplements. The records should show which parts and operations were actually used, not only a generic “repair completed” line. If a structural operation was performed, request the measurement or quality documentation the shop promised. Keep these records with the vehicle’s service history and provide them to Rivian or a future repairer if a related issue appears.
Warning signs that justify choosing another shop
- The shop cannot state its current Rivian certification or says certification is unnecessary for every type of collision.
- It will not identify the Rivian procedures, approved tooling, frame bench, or fixtures required for the proposed work.
- It dismisses pre- and post-repair scans or says calibration is unnecessary without examining the damage and applicable procedure.
- No one is identified to assess possible battery or high-voltage damage.
- The estimate is a single unexplained total with no parts, operations, assumptions, or supplement process.
- The shop pressures you to authorize repairs before insurer and technical questions are answered.
- It refuses to provide completion records, scan results, calibration documentation, or warranty terms.
- It gives a fixed completion promise while admitting that parts, teardown, approvals, or specialized equipment have not been checked.
Keep the limits of online certification information in mind
Certified locations can change, stop accepting vehicles, or have different capabilities at different times. The available material does not establish which certified shops are near a particular owner, whether a shop has an open appointment, or whether it participates in a specific insurance network. Verify all three directly before towing the vehicle.
The applicable Rivian procedure also depends on model year, damage location, and repair scope. A 2023 repair guideline is useful for understanding Rivian’s qualification and process expectations, but it does not replace the current vehicle-specific information that the certified shop must use. Ask the shop and Rivian for the current instructions governing your repair.
A practical decision rule
Choose the shop that can demonstrate the right Rivian certification for the job, explain the repair method in vehicle-specific terms, handle scans, calibrations, structural measurement, and high-voltage assessment as needed, and provide a written plan with clear insurer and logistics responsibilities. If two shops meet those requirements, select the one whose documentation, communication schedule, parts plan, transport terms, and warranty are clearest—not automatically the one with the lowest first estimate.
