Two cars with similar equipment labels can illuminate very differently.
Use the rating as a screening tool, and match the beam pattern to the roads you actually drive. A system that is strong on a straight highway may leave a dark area on a rural curve, while a system with good curve coverage may have compromises elsewhere.

The decision rule: compare the complete headlight system
Headlights are tested and sold as part of a vehicle system: lamp hardware, optics, aiming, controls and software. IIHS can assign separate ratings when one vehicle is offered with multiple systems, so the vehicle name alone is not enough. Verify the model year, trim and package on the rating page and on the car’s window sticker.

When two cars have the same overall grade, use the detailed entries to break the tie. A system with fewer weak sections on the curves may be preferable for a rural driver, while a system with consistently controlled glare may suit someone who spends most nights in traffic. There is no single beam pattern that is ideal for every route, so the comparison should end with the roads, speeds and traffic conditions you face most often.
What the IIHS rating actually measures
IIHS evaluates five approaches: one straightaway plus gradual and sharp curves to the left and right. Each approach is driven six times—three on low beams and three on high beams. Sensors record the distance at which illumination reaches at least 5 lux, measured 10 inches above the ground. Low-beam glare is measured at the height of an oncoming driver.
The lights are tested as delivered by the dealer, without aim adjustments. This matters because the result represents the system an ordinary buyer receives, not an expertly corrected setup. For perspective, a full moon on a clear night illuminates the ground to about 1 lux, so the 5-lux threshold represents a substantially brighter level used to compare useful forward visibility.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Straightaway and curve scores can differ sharply. A beam may reach far down the lane but fail to illuminate the inside of a bend. Read the left and right curve entries and note whether a weakness occurs on gradual, sharp or both types of turns.
The five approaches also make the rating more informative than a single photograph or a short showroom impression. A vehicle can look bright while parked and still leave a measured gap on one side of a curve. Conversely, a system that does not appear dramatically brighter can provide more even coverage where the test detects road illumination. Use the measured categories to identify those differences.
Step-by-step: how to choose among cars
- List the exact candidates. Record model year, body style, trim, optional packages and drivetrain if the manufacturer ties equipment to them. Do not assume a current listing applies to an older or newer year.
- Find every IIHS headlight system listed. If the vehicle has standard and optional lamps, open both entries. Confirm that the entry’s equipment description matches the car you can buy.
- Use the overall grade to remove weak choices. Good is the strongest screen, but Acceptable systems can still be workable when their detailed results fit your roads. Treat Marginal or Poor as a prompt to investigate carefully rather than as a brightness preference.
- Inspect low-beam visibility. Compare straightaway reach and each curve. Look for fair or inadequate sections, and check whether the deficiency is on the driver’s side, passenger side or both.
- Check glare separately. A beam that reaches far but blinds oncoming drivers is not a complete solution. Read the low-beam glare result and note whether the system exceeded the test limits.
- Review high-beam reach and controls. Compare high-beam distances and determine whether high-beam assist is included. Automatic switching can preserve high-beam use when traffic conditions permit, but it does not turn a poor optical design into a Good system.
- Check special functions by name. Identify whether the car has curve-adaptive lamps or adaptive driving beams (ADB). These are different technologies; “adaptive” in a marketing description is not enough to establish which one is present.
- Confirm the equipment before signing. Match the headlamp description, package code and model year on the vehicle to the IIHS entry. A dealer’s general statement that a model has LED or adaptive lighting does not establish the tested configuration.
If a listing is unclear, save the IIHS equipment description and compare it with the build sheet or window sticker. The goal is not merely to find a favorable model name; it is to ensure that the lamps tested by IIHS are the lamps installed on the specific car.
How to read the detailed results
Low-beam straight sections
Straightaway measurements indicate how early the driver can detect an object or road edge in an uncomplicated lane. Compare both sides of the lane, because a system can have a long reach in one direction and a short reach in the other. Also note the test’s “fair” or “inadequate” designations rather than relying only on the overall letter grade.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look for a pattern rather than one isolated number. If the driver-side edge is repeatedly weaker, that may matter on an unlit two-lane road where hazards appear near the shoulder. If both sides are even but relatively short, the limitation may be most noticeable at higher speeds, when less time is available to react. The page’s categories let you see which type of limitation applies.
Low-beam curves
Curves reveal whether the beam follows the road. IIHS uses both gradual and sharp bends in each direction, so inspect all four entries. If you regularly drive unlit winding roads, a curve weakness deserves more weight than a small straightaway advantage.
Do not assume that a curve-adaptive feature guarantees strong curve results. The feature may help one part of a turn while the complete system still has a fair or inadequate section elsewhere. Compare gradual and sharp turns separately, because a car that handles a sweeping bend well may not cover a tighter corner as evenly.

Glare
Glare is measured from the perspective of an oncoming driver. A result showing that the system never exceeded the low-beam glare limit is useful, but it does not erase a visibility weakness. The practical goal is enough light for your lane without imposing excessive light on other road users.
Glare deserves special attention if your normal route has frequent opposing traffic, cresting hills or narrow lanes. A system that performs well for you but repeatedly exceeds the limit can create a trade-off that is not apparent from a brightness description. Read the glare result alongside, not after, the visibility result.
High beams and high-beam assist
High beams can extend detection distance on empty roads. High-beam assist switches between high and low beams when it detects other vehicles; IIHS accounts for its potential benefit by reducing some low-beam demerits. It still depends on the system recognizing traffic and on the driver leaving the feature enabled, so compare the measured high-beam result as well.
High-beam assist is therefore a useful consideration, not a separate quality grade. Check whether the vehicle has the function in the tested configuration and whether the high-beam entries are strong on both straight and curved approaches. Drivers who frequently meet traffic should still examine low-beam coverage and glare, because the high beam may be unavailable much of the time.
Are LED headlights better for night driving?
Not automatically. Halogen, high-intensity discharge (HID) and LED describe the light source, not the quality of the complete beam. IIHS states that its ratings are technology-neutral and reports poor-performing examples in every technology category. Reflector and projector optics, aiming, beam shaping and control software can produce very different results from the same source type.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer safety, reach or glare performance from color temperature, a premium-sounding lamp name or the number of LEDs. Use the model-specific measurements instead. The same rule applies to replacement bulbs: the available evidence evaluates complete factory vehicle systems and does not establish a generic aftermarket bulb as a shortcut to factory performance.
This also answers the common question, “Which cars have the best headlights?” There is no permanent list based only on brand or lamp type. The relevant answer is the car-and-system combination that earns the stronger rating for the model year you are buying and has detailed results suited to your roads.
Curve-adaptive headlights, high-beam assist and ADB
Curve-adaptive headlights
Curve-adaptive lamps pivot toward the direction of travel, often using steering input, to illuminate a turn. They can be helpful on dark, winding roads because more of the beam points into the bend. They remain subject to the same glare and reach limits as any other system, so verify the IIHS curve entries.
High-beam assist
High-beam assist automatically selects high or low beams according to detected vehicles. It can increase the time spent on high beams without requiring constant manual switching. Because IIHS gives some credit for the function, a rating page may show fewer low-beam demerits when it is fitted. That adjustment is not a substitute for checking the actual visibility measurements.
Adaptive driving beams
ADB continuously shapes the high-beam pattern, reducing light directed at occupied areas while keeping unoccupied areas illuminated. ADB is not the same as a curve-adaptive lamp: one changes the high-beam pattern around traffic, while the other pivots a lamp toward a turn.

In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a final rule on February 15, 2022, allowing automakers to install ADB on new vehicles under amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 performance requirements. Availability remains model-specific. Do not assume that every vehicle using the word adaptive has ADB.
“NHTSA is issuing this final rule to help improve safety and protect vulnerable road users.”
This statement was made by NHTSA Deputy Administrator Dr. Steven Cliff in the agency’s February 15, 2022, announcement. It describes the rule’s purpose, not a guarantee that any particular ADB-equipped vehicle will receive a high IIHS rating.

Two current examples: why the details matter
The following model-year 2026 entries illustrate how to interpret a rating page. They are not universal purchase recommendations; recheck the exact model-year listing and equipment before buying.
| Vehicle and listed system | IIHS overall rating | Equipment shown | What the detailed page illustrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Honda Passport, all trims | Good | LED reflector low and high beams; no curve-adaptive function; high-beam assist | Low-beam glare never exceeded the limit, yet some road sections were rated fair or inadequate. A Good grade still warrants reading the curve and straightaway entries. |
| 2026 Tesla Model 3, listed all-trim system | Acceptable | LED projector lamps; curve-adaptive headlights; high-beam assist | Low-beam glare never exceeded the limit, while visibility was uneven and included inadequate areas. Feature-rich equipment did not produce a Good overall grade. |
The comparison shows why “LED,” “projector” or “curve-adaptive” cannot replace the system rating. The Passport’s reflector system scores higher overall despite lacking curve adaptation, while the Model 3’s adaptive projector system still has measured weak areas.
These examples also show why equipment lists should be read as facts to verify, not as a ranking. The Passport’s high rating does not mean every section is perfect, and the Model 3’s adaptive functions do not erase its inadequate areas. The useful comparison is the combination of grade, glare result and the exact sections that are fair or inadequate.
What the crash research says—and what it does not
IIHS’s overview, citing Matthew L. Brumbelow’s 2022 Journal of Safety Research study, reports 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes and 23% fewer nighttime pedestrian crashes for vehicles with Good-rated visibility compared with vehicles with Poor-rated headlights. Those are associations across groups, not a promise for an individual driver and not evidence that headlights alone determine crash risk.
The study estimated that each 10 fewer visibility demerits corresponded to a 4.6% lower nighttime crash rate, with a 95% confidence interval of 2.1% to 7.0%. The authors also noted limited statistical significance for some comparisons because of small samples. Treat these figures as evidence that visibility performance is safety-relevant, not as a guaranteed percentage reduction for your next car.
Match the beam to your night-driving conditions
Unlit rural roads
Give extra weight to high-beam reach, high-beam assist and curve results. If you encounter frequent bends, inspect both sharp-curve entries rather than choosing on straightaway distance alone.
Urban streets and divided highways
Glare and low-beam coverage may matter more than maximum high-beam distance because opposing traffic, street lighting and frequent vehicles limit high-beam use. A system that stays below the glare limit and provides even lane illumination can be preferable to one with a dramatic but rarely usable high beam.

Mixed commuting
Use the overall grade as the first filter, then prioritize the specific weakness you will encounter most. For example, a driver whose route includes an unlit ramp every night should scrutinize curve and merge-area illumination even if most travel is on lit roads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon buying mistakes
- Choosing by bulb type. LED is not a performance grade; inspect the IIHS system result.
- Comparing vehicle names instead of systems. Different trims or packages can carry separate ratings.
- Reading only the overall letter. A Good or Acceptable result can contain fair or inadequate sections that matter to your route.
- Ignoring glare. More light for you is not an improvement if it creates excessive light for oncoming drivers.
- Confusing technologies. Curve-adaptive lamps and ADB solve different problems.
- Assuming a feature is universal across years. Confirm the model-year page and installed equipment.
- Expecting a retrofit to reproduce a tested system. The IIHS evaluation covers complete factory systems and does not establish a generic bulb or aiming product as an equivalent upgrade.
- Treating the rating as a perfect score. Even a Good system can have fair or inadequate road sections, so read the entries that correspond to your route.
- Assuming the dealer can substitute a different lamp. The test represents the system as delivered; a different package or replacement assembly may not match the listed result.
A practical comparison worksheet
For each candidate, record the following before a test drive or purchase:
- Model year, trim and headlight package.
- IIHS overall rating and the date or model-year scope of the listing.
- Low-beam straightaway result.
- Low-beam gradual-left, sharp-left, gradual-right and sharp-right results.
- Low-beam glare result.
- High-beam straight and curve results.
- Presence of high-beam assist, curve-adaptive lamps or ADB, stated separately.
- Any fair or inadequate sections that overlap your regular roads.
After filling the sheet, eliminate systems with a mismatch between their weak areas and your driving environment. Among the remaining choices, favor the one with the stronger overall grade and the more even detailed results, provided the installed equipment is confirmed.
If two candidates remain close, decide which compromise is more acceptable: shorter reach on an empty straight road, weaker coverage on a particular curve, or a control feature that depends on automatic detection. Writing down that trade-off prevents a vivid marketing claim from outweighing the measurements that matter to you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a car with good headlight visibility for night driving?
Find the IIHS page for the exact model year and headlight system, then compare the overall grade, low-beam straight and curve results, glare, high-beam performance and high-beam assist. Confirm that the trim and package on the vehicle match the tested configuration.
Which cars have the best headlights?
There is no dependable answer based only on make, model name or bulb type. IIHS rates systems separately when equipment differs, and the model-year 2026 results show that only 46% of tested systems earned Good while 17% were Marginal or Poor. Compare the specific systems you can actually buy.
Are LED headlights better for night driving?
Not necessarily. LED, halogen and HID identify the light source; IIHS applies technology-neutral performance criteria and has found weak examples in every technology category. Check the measured visibility and glare results instead.
What does a Good rating tell me?
It indicates the system met IIHS criteria better overall than lower-rated systems, but it is not a perfect score. Read the detailed entries because a Good system can still have fair or inadequate sections on particular approaches.
Does high-beam assist make a low-rated system safe?
No. IIHS accounts for high-beam assist by reducing some low-beam demerits, but the function depends on detecting traffic and being enabled. Compare the actual low- and high-beam measurements and do not use the feature as a substitute for the overall rating.
Is ADB the same as curve-adaptive lighting?
No. Curve-adaptive lamps pivot toward the direction of a turn, while ADB continuously shapes the high-beam pattern to reduce light aimed at occupied areas and illuminate unoccupied areas. A vehicle described as adaptive may have one, the other or neither, so check the equipment description.

Can I improve a poor factory result with a generic replacement bulb?
The IIHS evaluation covers complete factory systems, including optics, aiming and controls. It does not establish a generic aftermarket bulb or aiming product as an equivalent upgrade, so do not assume a retrofit will reproduce a tested vehicle system.
How much should I trust the crash statistics?
They show an association between better-rated visibility and fewer reported nighttime crashes: 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes and 23% fewer nighttime pedestrian crashes for Good versus Poor systems. The 2022 study estimated a 4.6% lower nighttime crash rate for each 10 fewer visibility demerits, with a 2.1%–7.0% confidence interval. These estimates are not guarantees for an individual driver, and some comparisons had limited statistical significance because of small samples.
Bottom line
The best way to choose a car with good headlight visibility for night driving is to compare IIHS results for the exact system you will receive. Check low-beam reach on straights and all four curves, glare, high-beam performance and the presence of high-beam assist. Use LED, projector, curve-adaptive and adaptive labels only as descriptions of equipment—not as evidence of quality. A model-specific, system-level comparison gives you a defensible choice without mistaking brightness claims for usable visibility.
