Choose one only after checking your owner’s manual for the approved lift points and procedure, then matching the jack’s capacity, height range and saddle to your vehicle and the task. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Start with your vehicle and the job
Before comparing products, decide whether you need a jack for an emergency tire change or for garage work. A jack raises a vehicle; it does not, by itself, make the raised vehicle safe to work beneath.
Check the current owner’s manual for the correct jacking points and procedure. If you use a jack other than the vehicle’s original equipment jack, its capacity must be adequate for the vehicle’s weight, including cargo and modifications. The vehicle instructions hosted by NHTSA make those requirements explicit; follow the instructions for your own vehicle rather than assuming that one rating or jack style suits all cars.
Compare the fit, not just the capacity
A jack’s rated capacity is only one part of the fit. Check the product specifications against the vehicle’s ground clearance and the manufacturer-designated lift point, as well as the work you intend to do.

- Capacity: Confirm it is adequate for your vehicle as equipped, including cargo or modifications.
- Minimum height: The collapsed jack must fit beneath the vehicle and reach the approved jacking point.
- Maximum lift height: Confirm the jack can raise the vehicle enough for the intended task.
- Saddle and lift point: Ensure the saddle can contact the specified point correctly without damaging the vehicle.
- Use setting: Consider whether the jack is for an emergency tire change or controlled garage use, and whether the surface is suitable and stable.
For example, a listing from the Village of Greenwood Lake describes the BIG RED Torin T82001 as a hydraulic trolley floor jack with two jack stands. The seller lists a 2-ton capacity for the jack and stands and a jack lift range of 5-1/4 to 13-3/8 inches. Those are listing specifications, not independent test results or proof that the equipment fits a particular vehicle. Use the jack safely for a tire change
Follow the procedure in the vehicle’s manual. The vehicle instructions hosted by NHTSA call for a firm, level surface, the parking brake, hazard flashers, blocking the diagonally opposite wheel and using the specified jacking points. They also warn against changing a tire close to moving traffic and say passengers should not remain in the vehicle while it is jacked.

- Park on firm, level ground away from moving traffic if possible. If the vehicle is in an unsafe roadside location, prioritize getting occupants to a safe place and seek roadside assistance rather than attempting a change beside traffic.
- Apply the parking brake, switch on the hazard flashers and have passengers leave the vehicle before it is raised.
- Block the wheel diagonally opposite the one being raised, following the vehicle’s instructions.
- Position the jack only at the manufacturer-designated jacking point and operate it as described in the manual.
Use stands before working beneath a raised vehicle
A service jack is for lifting, not for holding a vehicle while someone works underneath. NIOSH’s Safe guidance states: “Never work under a vehicle supported only by a service jack.” Use appropriately rated stands or supports before going beneath a raised car, and place them only at manufacturer-specified support locations. Audi’s A6/S6 Quick Reference Specification Book likewise says: “Place jack stands only at locations specified by manufacturer.” The safe locations and procedure for your vehicle are in its manual.
For garage work, consult the jack and stand manuals as well as the vehicle manual. Make sure the stands are suitable for the vehicle and positioned as specified; a jack-and-stand bundle does not make every vehicle or work surface safe.

Why a universal “best jack” list would mislead
Vehicle weight, clearance, lift-point location and the intended task differ. The available product example supplies seller-stated specifications, but it does not establish a best choice for every owner or verify fit for any particular vehicle. No current price, availability or independent comparative performance result is established here. Make the decision from the specifications and manuals for the exact vehicle and equipment, not from a universal recommendation.
