Before buying or opening the system, confirm the brake model, required fluid, bleed-port fitting and manufacturer procedure. Shimano’s cited method uses a funnel with mineral oil; the cited SRAM procedures use syringes and model-specific fittings. These examples cover selected MTB systems, not every brand or road-brake procedure.
Identify the brake before choosing a tool
Find the exact brake model and consult its current manufacturer manual. Bleed fittings and procedures vary, even within a brand. If you cannot identify the fluid, fitting or procedure, do not open the system; check the manual or ask a qualified bicycle mechanic.
Choose a kit by checking these details against the manual:
- Brake model: Confirm the kit explicitly supports the exact brake, not merely the brand.
- Fluid: Verify the required fluid and buy only that type.
- Bleed-port fitting: Match the caliper port and any required adapter.
- Procedure: Determine whether the manufacturer specifies syringes, a funnel, or another arrangement.
- Included items: Check whether the kit includes the exact fittings and ancillary tools the procedure needs.
The manufacturer instructions establish the tool types and procedures, but do not compare retail kits or establish that any one kit fits all Shimano and SRAM brakes.

Shimano describes its approach as: “One way oil routing plus a funnel tool with mineral oil provides an easy and clean bleeding system.” That is a description of the cited Shimano method, not a claim that it is better or safer than SRAM’s syringe approach.
Do not mix brake fluids
Fluid compatibility is a safety-critical choice, not a matter of preference. SRAM specifies DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 for the cited DOT system and Maxima Mineral Brake Oil for the cited mineral-oil system. SRAM warns that using the wrong fluid can damage the system and make the brakes unsafe. Shimano’s cited one-way bleeding description uses mineral oil. Never assume fluids are interchangeable: confirm the exact model manual before purchasing fluid or servicing the brake.

Protect pads, yourself and the work area
SRAM’s service guidance calls for safety glasses, nitrile gloves and a catch pan. Keep fluid away from brake pads; SRAM instructs mechanics to replace pads if they contact brake fluid. Follow the manual’s handling and disposal instructions for the fluid and any contaminated materials.
Bleeding intervals depend on the brake system
For the systems covered by its cited manuals, SRAM recommends bleeding its DOT MTB brakes at least once a year and its mineral-oil MTB brakes every other year. SRAM also advises more frequent bleeding in some demanding conditions. These are manufacturer recommendations for those systems, not a universal schedule for all bicycle brakes. Use the maintenance guidance for your exact model.

When to have a mechanic do the work
Bleeding is not a good job to improvise. Choose a qualified bicycle mechanic if you lack the correct fitting or fluid, cannot confidently follow the model-specific procedure, or do not have the experience to work without contaminating the pads. SRAM recommends a qualified mechanic when service requires specialist knowledge and tools. The cited guidance does not establish local service availability or endorse a particular shop.
