How to Check Your Transmission Fluid Level—and How Often to Check or Change It

Transmission-fluid checks depend on the vehicle. Learn how to follow your manual for dipstick checks, sealed systems, safe top-ups and service intervals.

Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual before checking transmission fluid: the correct fluid, temperature, engine state, selector position and procedure vary by vehicle. Some cars have an accessible dipstick; others use a sealed transmission with no routine owner dipstick check. There is no single check or change interval that applies to every vehicle.

How do I check my transmission fluid?

Find the procedure for your exact year, make, model and powertrain in the owner’s manual. Follow its instructions for fluid type, vehicle temperature, whether the engine should be running, selector position and where to take the reading. Do not assume a procedure from another car applies to yours.

If your vehicle has a dipstick

Use the manual’s steps and read the level against the marks on the dipstick. The sequence can depend on the vehicle’s design and operating conditions. For example, the procedure for a 2001 Honda Civic calls for checking at normal operating temperature, parking on level ground, switching off the engine and waiting 60–90 seconds. The owner then removes and wipes the dipstick, reinserts it fully and checks that the reading is between the upper and lower marks. That is an example for that Civic, not a universal procedure. Honda’s 2001 Civic owner’s manual gives the vehicle-specific instructions.

Whether the engine should be running depends on the manual. The Civic example specifies checking with the engine off after a wait; do not apply that condition to another vehicle unless its instructions say to.

If your vehicle has no dipstick

Some newer transmission designs are sealed and do not provide a routine owner dipstick check. Do not try to improvise a check or open a service point without the vehicle-specific instructions and proper procedure. If you suspect a leak or a fluid problem, have a qualified technician inspect it. Toyota’s 2024 Grand Highlander guide, for example, directs owners to a Toyota dealer if they suspect leakage from a sealed transmission component. Toyota’s 2024 Grand Highlander maintenance guide.

Can I add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube?

Only if the owner’s manual for your vehicle specifies that method. Use the exact fluid it calls for, and add carefully to avoid overfilling; too much fluid can damage the transmission. Toyota’s instructions for a particular dipstick-tube method describe using a funnel, but that does not make the method appropriate for sealed transmissions or for vehicles whose manuals do not authorize it. How often should I check transmission fluid?

Use the inspection or maintenance schedule for your exact vehicle rather than a blanket mileage rule. The schedule may distinguish between checking for leakage and replacing fluid, and it may set different requirements for ordinary use and special operating conditions. Toyota’s 2024 Grand Highlander guide, for example, treats suspected sealed-component leakage separately from fluid replacement and specifies replacement for particular configurations and special-use conditions. These instructions are not a schedule for other vehicles.

Toyota’s consumer guidance says manual-transmission fluid typically needs changing less often than automatic-transmission fluid, but still recommends consulting the owner’s manual or a technician for the vehicle’s schedule. Toyota: “How Often Should You Change Your Transmission Fluid?”

How often should transmission fluid be changed?

There is no universal replacement interval established here. Follow the maintenance schedule for your exact year, make, model and powertrain, including any conditions it lists for towing, heavy loading or other severe use. Do not treat a leak inspection as a fluid replacement, or assume that a check interval and a replacement interval are the same.

For a vehicle-specific recommendation, consult the owner’s manual or ask a qualified technician. The manual is also the authority on the required fluid and the conditions for measuring its level.
