How to Check If Your Engine’s Head Gasket Is Blown—and What It Means for Your Car

Symptoms can suggest a head-gasket leak but cannot confirm one. Learn what to check safely, how mechanics test, and what repair may involve.

You cannot confirm a blown head gasket from one symptom alone. Coolant loss, overheating, exhaust steam, misfires, or milky residue can point to a problem, but each can have other causes. Check only what is safe to observe with the engine cool, stop driving if it overheats, and have a mechanic test the suspected leak path before deciding on repairs.

What a head gasket does—and why symptoms vary

The head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block. It helps keep combustion pressure, coolant, and oil in their intended passages. A leak can connect different passages, so the signs depend on where the gasket has failed.

For example, a leak between adjacent cylinders may cause misfiring, loss of power, or poor fuel economy. A leak between a cylinder and a coolant passage may lead to overheating, coolant loss, steam from the exhaust, or foaming coolant. These are clues, not proof. Other engine or cooling-system faults can produce similar symptoms.

Warning signs: what they may—and may not—mean

  • Repeated overheating or falling coolant level: may indicate a leak, but the cause could also be a hose, radiator, water pump, thermostat, or another cooling-system problem.
  • Steam from the exhaust: can accompany coolant entering a cylinder, especially alongside coolant loss or overheating. It is not enough by itself to identify a head-gasket leak.
  • Misfires, reduced power, or poor fuel economy: may occur if a leak affects neighboring cylinders, but ignition, fuel, and other engine problems can cause similar symptoms.
  • Foaming or bubbling coolant: may be a sign of combustion gases entering the cooling system. A mechanic can use a test to investigate whether that is happening.
  • Milky residue under the oil cap: does not establish a blown gasket. Condensation can create residue, particularly when a car makes frequent short trips. Oil in the coolant can also come from a leaking oil or transmission cooler.

A persistent coolant-level change, repeated overheating, or a combination of symptoms warrants prompt inspection. The symptoms alone cannot tell you which part has failed.

Safe checks you can make at home

With the engine fully cool, note the coolant level and whether it changes over time, look for visible external leaks, and observe the oil and exhaust. Record when overheating or misfiring occurs. These details can help a mechanic narrow down the problem, but they do not confirm a head-gasket failure.

Never remove a coolant pressure cap while the engine is hot. Hot coolant and pressurized steam can cause severe burns. Do not perform a running, cap-off check based on a symptom checklist; testing procedures vary by vehicle and may expose you to hot coolant or other hazards.

How a mechanic checks for a head-gasket leak

Tests are chosen to investigate the suspected leak path. No single screening test necessarily rules out every possible type of gasket failure.

Check or test What it can help investigate Important limitation
Compression test Whether compression leakage between adjacent cylinders may be present. Interpretation and procedure are vehicle-specific; it does not by itself identify every possible leak path.
Cooling-system pressure test Whether the cooling system loses pressure or shows evidence of a leak. Use the exact vehicle procedure and specified pressure. Do not assume another car’s pressure limit applies.
Chemical combustion-gas test Whether combustion gases are entering the coolant. A negative result does not guarantee that every type of head-gasket failure is absent.
Visual coolant observation Whether signs such as foaming or bubbles appear during a vehicle-specific test. Some procedures involve a running engine and pressurized, hot coolant; this is not a casual home check.

A 2010 Dodge and Ram Journey service procedure reproduced by Operation CHARM describes compression testing for leakage between adjacent cylinders and pressure, chemical, and visual checks for combustion leakage into the water jacket. Its instructions and pressure limit apply to that procedure, not universally to other vehicles. Have a professional diagnose persistent symptoms, unclear test results, or any test requiring hot coolant, compressed air, or engine disassembly.

What to do if the engine overheats

  1. Pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can and turn off the engine. AAA gives the same advice in its overheating guidance.
  2. Do not open the radiator or coolant pressure cap while the engine is hot. Let the engine cool before any safe visual check.
  3. If the temperature rises again, coolant is escaping, or the engine runs poorly, arrange professional help rather than continuing to drive. A suspected head-gasket problem is only one possible cause, but continued overheating can worsen engine damage.

What head-gasket repair involves

Replacing a head gasket is labor-intensive. The cylinder head must be removed, mating surfaces cleaned, and the head checked for distortion. Resurfacing is appropriate only when the manufacturer’s limits and the head’s condition allow it; otherwise, repair or replacement decisions depend on inspection findings.

Haynes says the work can take from six hours to a few days, depending on severity. Vehicle design, access to the engine, labor rates, and secondary damage all affect the scope and quote. Ask the shop what inspection found, whether the head is within the manufacturer’s limits, and what work is included in the estimate. Compare the repair cost with the car’s overall condition and value rather than treating a single estimate as universal.

As one model-specific reference, AAA’s estimator listed $1,929.11–$2,785.28 for parts and labor for a head-gasket replacement on a 2012 Nissan Sentra when accessed in 2026. AAA says actual cost varies with local labor rates, time, parts, and vehicle condition; this example is not a general price for other cars.

Haynes describes head-gasket sealer as a temporary measure and notes that it can block small coolant passages. It should not be treated as a durable substitute for diagnosing and repairing the underlying fault.
