How to Check Whether Your Volkswagen Is Included in a Safety Recall

Check your Volkswagen’s 17-character VIN with the official manufacturer and government tools for your country. Learn what a clean result means and what to do about an open recall.

To find out whether your Volkswagen has an open safety recall, look up its 17-character VIN in the official Volkswagen recall tool for the country where the vehicle is registered, then cross-check the result with that country’s vehicle-safety regulator. A model name or model year alone cannot confirm whether your particular car is affected.

The steps below cover the United States and Canada. If your Volkswagen is registered elsewhere, use the local Volkswagen site and national vehicle-safety regulator. If a notice tells you not to drive or to park outside, follow it while you contact an authorized dealer.

How do I check if my Volkswagen has a recall?

  1. Find the VIN. It is a 17-character vehicle identification number. Common places to find it are the lower-left corner of the dashboard, visible through the windshield; the label in the driver-side doorjamb; and your registration or insurance documents. Volkswagen’s U.S. lookup notes that VINs do not use the letters O, I, or Q. Check the characters carefully before searching, especially if you are copying the VIN from a document. See Volkswagen’s VIN location guidance.
  2. Search Volkswagen’s lookup for your vehicle’s market. U.S. owners can use Volkswagen’s Recalls and Service Campaign Lookup. Canadian owners can use Volkswagen Canada’s Recalls & Service Actions. Enter the VIN exactly as shown on the vehicle or documents. Choose the tool that corresponds to the vehicle’s market and registration rather than assuming a U.S. result covers a Volkswagen sold in another country.
  3. Check the government database, too. In the United States, search by VIN or license plate at NHTSA’s recall lookup. In Canada, search Transport Canada’s vehicle recall resources. These government tools are useful cross-checks, but they do not necessarily display the same categories or history as the manufacturer’s lookup.
  4. Read the result and any recall notice carefully. Check whether it identifies an unrepaired safety recall, what remedy is prescribed, and whether the notice gives immediate safety instructions. A listed service action or campaign is not automatically a safety recall; read the category and description rather than treating every result as the same kind of repair.
  5. If a safety recall is open, contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer promptly. Ask to arrange the covered recall repair and whether the remedy is ready. Follow any instructions in the notice while waiting. If a remedy is not yet available, ask the dealer what the current safety guidance is and when to check back.

A “no open recalls” result means the lookup did not show a listed, applicable unrepaired recall at the time of the search. It does not rule out a newly announced recall whose affected VINs are still being identified, an older recall outside the lookup’s scope, or a future recall. If the search does not accept the VIN, verify the characters against the dashboard or doorjamb label and try the other official tool before drawing a conclusion.

Which Volkswagen recall lookup should I use?

Volkswagen’s lookup and government databases are useful for related but different checks. Start with the manufacturer’s VIN tool for the relevant market, then use the regulator’s database as a cross-check—particularly if the results differ, the vehicle was imported, or you are unsure whether a repair was recorded. A VIN- or plate-based search is more specific to the individual vehicle than a general search for a make, model, or model year.

Lookup Coverage and search What it includes Important limits
Volkswagen U.S. VIN lookup for vehicles in the U.S. market. Applicable recalls and service campaigns for which customer notifications were made during the previous 15 years, according to Volkswagen. The stated window is 15 years. The page does not establish support for recall alerts.
NHTSA U.S. government lookup by VIN or license plate. Whether a specific vehicle needs recall repair. Does not show already repaired recalls, some recent recalls while VIN identification is ongoing, safety recalls more than 15 years old except where a manufacturer provides additional coverage, manufacturer customer-service or other non-safety campaigns, or international-vehicle recalls. The page does not establish support for alerts.
Volkswagen Canada VIN lookup for vehicles in Canada. Separately identifies safety recalls, service actions, and environmental recalls. The cited page does not state a comparable lookback window or whether the tool supports alerts.
Transport Canada Canadian government recall resources and database. Vehicle safety recall information. Transport Canada describes manufacturer VIN lookup tools as part of recall access. The cited guidance does not establish a comparable lookup window, treatment of non-safety campaigns, or alert support.

Sources: Volkswagen U.S., NHTSA, Volkswagen Canada, and Transport Canada.

The main practical difference is scope. Volkswagen’s U.S. lookup includes both recalls and service campaigns for notified actions in its stated 15-year window. NHTSA’s search is aimed at whether a particular U.S. vehicle still needs recall repair; it excludes completed recall repairs and non-safety manufacturer campaigns. Volkswagen Canada labels several types of actions separately, while Transport Canada focuses on vehicle safety recall information. If you are checking for a safety defect, use the manufacturer and regulator results together instead of assuming one database is a complete service history.

These tools also differ in how they handle time and vehicle identification. NHTSA notes that some newly announced recalls may not show for every affected VIN while identification is in progress, and records are added as VINs are determined. Volkswagen’s U.S. page describes a 15-year customer-notification window. The cited Canadian pages do not specify an equivalent time window. None of these differences changes the basic rule: use the VIN, not just a model-year list, to check whether your car is included.

What a Volkswagen recall lookup can—and cannot—tell you

A VIN matters more than the model name

A safety recall may cover only vehicles built during a particular production period or fitted with certain equipment. Two Volkswagens with the same model and model year can therefore have different results. A headline about a recalled model is a reason to check the VIN, not proof that your vehicle is affected.

The VIN is the identifier used to match a vehicle to recall records. The 17-character sequence is not the same thing as a license plate, trim name, or registration year. For the Volkswagen lookup, make sure you select the correct market tool and type the VIN without substituting similar-looking characters. Because Volkswagen’s U.S. tool says the letters O, I, and Q are not used in VINs, a character that looks like one of these may instead be a number or another letter. If the dashboard and paperwork appear to disagree, use the vehicle label and ask a dealer to help verify the number.

A clean result has limits

NHTSA says some recently announced recalls may not yet have all affected VINs identified; records are added as identification continues. Its lookup also omits completed repairs, recalls older than 15 years in most cases, manufacturer non-safety campaigns, and recalls for international vehicles. Volkswagen’s U.S. tool describes its own 15-year window as covering actions for which customers were notified. Treat the result as a snapshot of records within that tool’s scope, not as a guarantee that the vehicle has never had a recall or will not be recalled later.

A lookup is a record check, not a diagnosis or a physical inspection. It cannot tell you whether a part is currently showing symptoms, whether a past repair was done correctly, or whether the car is safe to drive when a notice gives a specific restriction. Do not use a clean screen to override an actual recall notice, unusual vehicle behavior, or advice from a dealer or regulator. If a notice says not to drive or to park outside, follow that instruction even while you are confirming the record.

If you recently heard about a recall, check again later if the VIN is not yet listed, or ask an authorized dealer to check the vehicle’s record. If the manufacturer and regulator results disagree, contact the dealer or the relevant regulator rather than assuming the vehicle is clear. Keep the date of your searches and any result or notice details so you can explain what you saw when you call.

A service campaign is not necessarily a safety recall

Volkswagen distinguishes U.S. safety recalls, which address safety defects or compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards, from service campaigns for technical issues not directly related to safety or compliance; campaigns can include emissions matters. Volkswagen Canada separately lists safety recalls, service actions, and environmental recalls. A campaign may be worth asking a dealer about, but do not describe every campaign as a safety recall or assume it has the same remedy and urgency.

The category matters because it tells you what kind of action the result describes. If a lookup shows a service campaign or environmental action rather than a safety recall, read its description and ask the dealer whether it applies to your vehicle and what action is recommended. Do not ignore it solely because it is not labeled a safety recall, but keep its status distinct when describing the issue or asking about coverage.

What should I do if my Volkswagen has an open safety recall?

  1. Follow urgent safety instructions first. If the recall notice says “do not drive,” “park outside,” or gives another precaution, follow it. NHTSA’s October 30, 2025 consumer alert specifically advises owners to follow directions such as these. Do not wait for a routine appointment or a second lookup if the notice already gives an immediate precaution.
  2. Call an authorized Volkswagen dealer. Give the dealer the VIN and recall information, and ask to schedule the covered recall repair. NHTSA’s October 30, 2025 alert says: “If you have an open recall, call your vehicle manufacturer’s dealership immediately to schedule your free recall repair.” Volkswagen Canada and NHTSA describe covered recall repairs as free.
  3. Ask whether the remedy is available and what to do in the meantime. A recall announcement does not always mean the repair is ready that day. Parts may need to be developed, tested, manufactured, and distributed. The dealer can advise on remedy timing and any current safety precautions. If the dealer cannot complete the repair yet, ask whether the notice recommends any interim steps and when the dealer expects to have an update.
  4. Confirm what the appointment covers. Ask the dealer to identify the recall repair and explain whether any separate work is being recommended. The no-charge promise applies to the covered recall repair; unrelated service or work needed because of damage or aftermarket equipment may be treated separately.
  5. Keep the repair record. After the work, retain the dealer paperwork and check the VIN lookup again if you want to confirm the record has been updated. If the lookup still appears to show an open recall, ask the dealer to verify completion in the vehicle’s record.

“Free” applies to the covered recall repair, not necessarily to every issue found during the visit. Volkswagen Canada notes that aftermarket equipment or vehicle damage that prevents safe recall work can require separate, owner-paid work before the recall repair can be completed. Ask the dealer to explain any such work and separate it from the recall remedy. If you are uncertain about a proposed charge, ask what part of the work is required to complete the recall and what work is unrelated before authorizing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume you can choose any repair shop or claim every previous repair as the recall remedy. The official guidance describes covered repairs through the manufacturer or Volkswagen dealer network, and a dealer may need to inspect prior work to establish whether it actually completed the recall action. Bring repair invoices, prior notices, and the VIN when you contact the dealer.

What if the repair was already done or I never received a notice?

Do not assume the recall is resolved solely because someone previously repaired the same part, or because no letter arrived. Volkswagen Canada says a dealer may need to inspect an earlier repair to verify whether it completed the recall action. Contact Volkswagen or an authorized dealer with the VIN and any repair paperwork, and ask them to verify the vehicle’s recall status.

In Canada, Volkswagen says owner mailings depend on provincial or territorial registration information. If you may have missed a notice, confirm that the registration details are current and ask a dealer to check the record. A notice can also arrive before the remedy is available, so follow its instructions and ask the dealer for the current status rather than treating the absence of an appointment as proof that no recall exists.

The same verification approach is useful if you bought the Volkswagen used, moved, or are unsure whether the previous owner received a letter. The online result and dealer record are more useful than relying on a seller’s recollection or a service receipt that does not identify the recall action. In Canada, the registration information used for mailings can be tied to provincial or territorial records, so keeping those details current helps notices reach the current owner.

If the database still lists a recall after a dealer says it was completed, call the dealer with the repair date and paperwork and ask them to confirm whether the record was updated. If a recall is absent from the lookup but you have a notice, provide the notice and VIN to Volkswagen or the dealer. Do not treat a mismatch as proof that the recall has disappeared or that a prior repair was inadequate; ask the party responsible for the record to clarify it.

Why it is worth checking even if you have not noticed a problem

A recall lookup is not a diagnostic test: it checks records associated with the VIN and does not determine whether a vehicle is currently showing symptoms. Some defects may not be obvious to a driver. A regulator’s broad recall totals also do not indicate whether a particular Volkswagen is affected. For context, NHTSA reported 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls and more than 29.3 million vehicles recalled in the United States in 2024; those are cross-industry figures, not Volkswagen-specific counts. NHTSA published those figures in a consumer alert on October 30, 2025.

In February 2025, Transport Canada Minister Anita Anand said: “Easy access to recall information online is an obvious step to ensure the safety of Canadians. Roughly one in five vehicles in Canada in use on our roads has an unresolved recall issue.” That statement is Canadian-wide context, not an estimate for Volkswagen owners. The point for an individual owner is still to check the VIN rather than infer recall status from a national statistic.

Make the lookup part of a practical ownership check when you have a reason to verify the vehicle’s status—for example, after receiving a notice, hearing that a specific Volkswagen may be included in a recall, or discovering uncertainty in the service history. If a new recall is announced and the VIN is not initially listed, remember that recently affected VINs can still be under identification. Rechecking or asking an authorized dealer can help resolve that uncertainty.

Who can help if the lookup does not answer your question?

  • United States: Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer about a Volkswagen recall record or remedy. For a suspected vehicle safety problem not covered by a current recall, NHTSA lists its Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
  • Canada: Contact Volkswagen Canada or an authorized dealer about the VIN result, a previous repair, or remedy timing. For a Canadian safety-related defect report, Volkswagen Canada points owners to Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations and Recalls program at 1-800-333-0510.
  • Elsewhere: Use the Volkswagen site and vehicle-safety regulator for the country where the vehicle is registered. U.S. and Canadian lookup results may not include recalls for vehicles in other markets.

When calling, have the VIN, the result from each lookup, any recall letter, and relevant repair invoices ready. State whether the vehicle is currently drivable and mention any instruction in a notice, such as parking outside. This helps the dealer or regulator distinguish a question about database status from an immediate safety concern or a request to schedule a remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a Volkswagen recall by VIN?

Find the 17-character VIN on the lower-left dashboard visible through the windshield, the driver-side doorjamb label, or registration or insurance documents. Enter it in the official Volkswagen recall tool for the vehicle’s market, then cross-check the result with the national regulator: NHTSA in the U.S. or Transport Canada in Canada.

Can I check whether my VW has a recall using only the model and year?

A model and model year are not enough to confirm that your particular Volkswagen is affected. A recall may apply only to vehicles from a specific production period or with particular equipment. Use the VIN-specific lookup and confirm uncertain results with an authorized dealer.

What does “no open recalls” mean?

It means that the lookup did not show a listed, applicable unrepaired recall for that VIN at the time of the search. It is not a guarantee against a newly announced recall whose VINs are still being identified, recalls outside the database’s time or market scope, or future recalls. NHTSA also does not show completed repairs or manufacturer non-safety campaigns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a Volkswagen recall repair free?

Volkswagen Canada and NHTSA describe covered recall repairs as free. That does not necessarily make unrelated work free. Volkswagen Canada notes that damage or aftermarket equipment that prevents safe recall work may require separate owner-paid work before the recall can be completed; ask the dealer to distinguish that work from the recall remedy.

What if my Volkswagen recall repair is not available yet?

Contact an authorized dealer, ask whether the remedy is ready, and follow the safety instructions in the notice while you wait. Volkswagen Canada explains that parts may need development, testing, manufacture, and distribution before a remedy is available. Ask the dealer for current status rather than assuming the repair can be done immediately.

What if I already had the recalled part repaired or never got a letter?

Do not assume the recall is resolved based only on a prior repair or the absence of a letter. Volkswagen Canada says a dealer may need to inspect earlier work to verify that it completed the recall action. Give the dealer the VIN and any repair paperwork and ask them to verify the record. Canadian mailings depend on provincial or territorial registration information.

What should I do if my Volkswagen recall notice says not to drive?

Follow the notice’s instruction, including directions such as “do not drive” or “park outside,” and contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer promptly for guidance and remedy status. Do not use a clean lookup result to override a safety instruction in a current notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should I call about a suspected safety issue that is not covered by a current recall?

In the U.S., NHTSA lists its Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 for suspected vehicle safety problems not covered by a current recall. In Canada, Volkswagen Canada points owners reporting a safety-related defect to Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations and Recalls program at 1-800-333-0510.

The Bottom Line

Check your Volkswagen’s 17-character VIN in the official lookup for its market, then cross-check with the relevant national regulator. If an open safety recall appears, follow the notice’s precautions and contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer promptly to arrange the covered repair. A clean result is only a snapshot of the records that tool currently lists.
