Use the automaker’s official order-status account, tracker or app, then have the dealer that accepted the order check the manufacturer’s internal system. Ask for the vehicle’s exact stage, the last update date, the assigned assembly plant, and confirmation of whether the manufacturer has connected your order’s changed production or delivery estimate to the strike. A strike announcement or a moving estimated delivery date alone cannot prove that your particular order is delayed by the walkout.
What you need before checking
Locate the original order confirmation before opening a tracker or contacting anyone. Record the order number, the dealer’s name and contact details, the make and model, and every production or delivery estimate shown in the confirmation. Keep the email or document available while you contact support; GM says its confirmation email includes the order number and dealer contact information.

- Order identifier: Use the number requested by your automaker. It may be an order number, production number, vehicle order number (VON), or VIN.
- Dealer details: Have the selling dealer’s name and the salesperson or order specialist’s contact information ready.
- Timing record: Note the original estimate and any revised date, including when each estimate was given.
- Official account access: Sign in to the automaker’s website or app if your make offers one.
Do not assume that a 17-character VIN is the universal lookup key. Different systems request different identifiers, and entering the wrong one can produce no result even when the order is active.
Follow this process in order
1. Check the automaker’s official tracker or account
Start with the manufacturer’s own customer portal, order page, app, email-notification service, chat or support channel. The online result is useful for seeing whether the order has advanced, but the labels and detail available to customers vary by make and market.

Use the exact identifier and spelling shown in the automaker’s instructions. If the tracker accepts more than one identifier, try the one printed on your confirmation first and keep the other available for support.
2. Ask the dealer to read the order-system status
The dealer that accepted the order can often see internal milestones that are not displayed publicly. Ask for the current status and the date it was last updated, not just an informal “it is delayed” or “the factory is behind.” Ford’s official guidance says that when Ford knows production may be delayed, the dealer is the first to know; that statement describes Ford’s process and should not be treated as a rule for every manufacturer.
3. Identify the exact stage
Have the dealer state whether the order is awaiting scheduling, scheduled for production, in production, built, awaiting transport, in transit, or at the dealership. Then ask which stage is taking longer than expected. A vehicle can be finished at the plant yet delayed in carrier assignment or transit, which is a different problem from a production stoppage.

Ask which assembly plant is assigned to your vehicle and whether that facility is affected by the strike. The key question is whether the manufacturer or dealer has specifically attributed the revised timing of your order to that strike. If they cannot make that connection, record the uncertainty rather than presenting the strike as the confirmed cause.
5. Set a dated follow-up
Write down the status wording, the last-update date, the revised estimate, the name of the person who supplied the information, and the date on which another update is expected. A future check-in date is more useful than repeatedly refreshing an unchanged page.

The table is a set of examples, not a claim that every brand offers the same tracker, identifier or status depth. The Ford instructions cited here are specifically for Ford UK, and BMW’s route is identified for the United States. A customer in another country may see different pages, stages or support options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to ask the dealer
Send a concise written request so the answers and dates are easy to preserve:
“Could you check my order in the manufacturer’s system and tell me its current status and last update date? Has it been scheduled or entered production? Which plant is assigned to it, and is that plant affected by the strike? Has the manufacturer linked my order’s revised production or delivery estimate to the strike? What is the next expected update?”
This wording asks for order-specific evidence instead of a general statement about the factory. If the representative cannot answer every item, ask which information is unavailable and who can provide it.
Questions that distinguish a production delay from a transport delay
- Has the order received a production allocation or scheduled build date?
- Has assembly started, and if so, on what date?
- Has the vehicle been marked built or dispatched from the factory?
- Is it waiting for a carrier, moving through transit, or physically at the dealership?
- Is the assigned plant operating, partially stopped, or closed because of the strike?
- Does the manufacturer’s system show a strike-related reason code or note on this order?
How to read common order-status stages
Names differ by manufacturer, but the sequence below gives each label a practical meaning. Ask the dealer to use the exact system wording when possible.

|---|---|---|
| Order received | The manufacturer has recorded the order, but a build slot may not yet be assigned. | Has a production allocation or scheduled date been issued? |
| Awaiting scheduling | The order is in the queue for a production plan. | What event must occur before it can be scheduled, and when will the system be checked again? |
| Scheduled for production | A planned build window exists, although the date can still move. | Has the plant confirmed the window, and has the strike changed it? |
| In production | Assembly has started or is recorded as active. | Is the line operating, and is a completion date available? |
| Built | The vehicle is recorded as completed at the plant. | Is it waiting for inspection, carrier assignment or release? |
| Dispatched from factory | The vehicle has left the plant or been released for transport. | What carrier or transport milestone is next? |
| Awaiting transport | Production may be complete, but movement has not begun. | Is the strike affecting shipping, or is the hold unrelated to assembly? |
| In transit | The vehicle is moving through the delivery network. | What is the latest scan or estimated dealer-arrival date? |
| At the dealership | The vehicle has reached the selling dealer and the factory-order question is effectively finished. | Confirm arrival, inspection and any remaining paperwork with the dealer. |
BMW’s official tracker is an example of this separation: it describes milestones from “Order received” and “Scheduled for production” through “Dispatched from factory,” “In transit” and “At the dealership.” Your automaker may use different labels or omit some milestones.

How to decide whether the strike is actually delaying your order
Use a three-part test rather than relying on news coverage or a changed date.
- Plant match: Is a specific assembly plant assigned to the order, and is that plant affected by the strike?
- Timing match: Did the order’s production or delivery milestone move during the period in which that plant’s operation was affected?
- Manufacturer attribution: Has the dealer or automaker identified the strike as the reason for this order’s revised timing?
If all three answers are yes, you have a documented strike-related delay. If the plant is unaffected, the vehicle is already built and waiting for transport, or the representative cites another reason, do not label the delay a factory-strike delay. If the status is merely stale, the cause remains unconfirmed.
Why a changed estimated delivery date is not enough
Estimates can move while an order is waiting for scheduling, being assembled, awaiting a carrier, traveling through the network or already at the dealer. A revised date identifies a change in expectation, not its cause. Ask which milestone changed and request the manufacturer’s explanation for that milestone.
Why a broad strike announcement is not enough
Industrial action can involve selected plants, shifts, suppliers or dates rather than every facility building every model. Without the assigned plant and an order-specific note, a general announcement cannot establish that your vehicle is affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the tracker is stale or contradictory
The page has not changed
Capture the displayed status and the date you checked, then ask the dealer for the internal last-update date. A stale public page is not proof that production stopped. Request a specific next review date and ask whether a new milestone will appear only after scheduling, build completion or dispatch.
The dealer and tracker disagree
Ask both parties to identify the status label, timestamp and identifier they used. Confirm that the dealer is looking at the same order number or production number rather than a retail invoice, stock number or VIN that belongs to another record. Preserve screenshots or emails showing the discrepancy and ask which source is authoritative for the next update.

You do not have the required identifier
Return to the confirmation email and ask the dealer for the number used by the manufacturer’s tracker. Dodge, for example, requires an 8-to-9-character VON and directs customers to the dealership when the VON is unavailable. BMW USA accepts a VIN or production number, while GM chat accepts a six-digit order number or a 17-character VIN. These differences are why guessing an identifier is inefficient.
The dealer gives only a general factory statement
Repeat the order-specific questions: current stage, last-update date, assigned plant, whether that plant is affected, and whether the manufacturer has attributed the revised estimate to the strike. Ask for the next expected update in writing. If the dealer cannot access the record, use the automaker’s official support channel and provide the order identifier through that channel.
Keep a useful delay record
A simple log helps distinguish a genuine change from repeated estimates:
| Date checked | Source and contact | Identifier used | Exact status wording | Last system update | Estimate and stated cause | Next follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: 17 October 2026 | Dealer order specialist | Production number or VON | Copy the exact label | Date supplied by representative | Record whether strike attribution was confirmed, unknown or denied | Date and person to contact |
Keep confirmation emails, chat transcripts and written dealer replies together. Record facts separately from assumptions: “delivery estimate moved from 12 to 26 November” is a fact; “the strike caused it” is a conclusion that requires the manufacturer’s attribution.
Privacy and safe-contact practices
Use the automaker’s published website, app, chat or telephone route and the dealer’s official contact details. Do not post your order number, VIN, address or personal documents publicly. GM specifically warns customers not to include personal information such as a phone number, address or payment-card details in its chat. Other automakers may have their own privacy rules, so provide only the information needed to locate the order.
A third-party VIN decoder, physical tracker or accessory cannot provide the manufacturer’s internal order record or establish why a production estimate changed. The authoritative answers come from the automaker’s order system and the dealer handling the order.
Common mistakes that lead to a wrong answer
- Using the VIN automatically: Some systems require an order number, production number or VON instead.
- Checking only the public tracker: The dealer may have a newer internal update or a reason code not shown online.
- Equating “built” with “delivered: A completed vehicle can still await carrier assignment or remain in transit.
- Assuming the nearest plant built the vehicle: Ask which plant is assigned rather than inferring it from the model.
- Treating a news report as an order notice: A strike can affect selected facilities or periods and may not involve your vehicle.
- Accepting an undated estimate: Request when the status was last refreshed and when it will be checked again.
- Repeating a stale status: Preserve the old wording and seek a new dated update instead of interpreting the same page repeatedly.
What is and is not established about delay length
The official tracking guidance cited here does not provide a reliable statistic for the average duration, prevalence or probability of strike-related vehicle-order delays. Do not promise a number of days based on a strike announcement. The only defensible timing for an individual order is the dated estimate supplied through the automaker’s or dealer’s order system, and that estimate can change.
A compact decision checklist
- Find the confirmation and write down the correct order identifier.
- Open the automaker’s official account, tracker, app or support route.
- Save the displayed status and the date you checked.
- Ask the dealer for the internal status and last-update date.
- Identify whether the order is awaiting scheduling, in production, built, awaiting transport, in transit or at the dealership.
- Confirm the assigned plant and whether that facility is affected by the strike.
- Ask whether the manufacturer has explicitly linked the revised estimate to the strike.
- Write down the next expected update and follow up through the official channel.
Ford’s published guidance summarizes one manufacturer’s escalation logic: “When we know that we may experience a delay in production, the Ford Dealer you placed your order with is the first to know.” The practical lesson applies more broadly even though the statement itself is Ford UK-specific: the selling dealer is an essential source when a customer-facing tracker is incomplete.
