The correct check depends on where the Tesla is registered and whether it has been modified. A Tesla with a Dutch registration plate can be checked through the RDW registration-number lookup and its Dutch registration certificate. A Tesla registered in another EU country can normally use its European registration certificate as evidence of approval for Dutch registration. A vehicle imported from outside the EU, or one without applicable European type approval or with major modifications, may need an individual RDW approval process.
Do not confuse vehicle approval with registration, and do not treat approval of a Tesla driver-assistance feature as approval of a particular car. Use the decision path below, keep the vehicle identification number (VIN) and original documents together, and ask RDW for a case-specific decision when the records conflict.

What “approved for use” means in the Netherlands
Several different legal checks are often described as approval. European type approval is granted in advance for a vehicle type or configuration by a European vehicle authority. It establishes that the type meets the applicable technical requirements. Dutch registration is a separate national record showing that a particular vehicle has been registered in the Netherlands. A registration number therefore answers where the vehicle is registered; it does not, by itself, explain every approval document behind the configuration.

For a specific car, the useful evidence is the combination of its VIN, registration certificate, type approval information, Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or digital CoC (eCoC), import history, and modification history. A result for one Tesla model or one driver-assistance system cannot be generalized to every Tesla variant.
Choose the correct check first

This classification prevents a common error: using a CoC search for a Dutch-registered vehicle that already has a clear registration record, or assuming that a foreign document automatically completes Dutch registration for an import.
Tesla already has a Dutch registration number
1. Run the RDW registration-number check
- Open RDW’s information about the vehicle registration certificate and follow the registration-number check provided there.
- Enter the Dutch registration number exactly as shown on the plate and compare the returned make, model and other identifying details with the Tesla in front of you.
- Check the physical or digital registration certificate for the type approval number. The number should relate to the same vehicle record and VIN.
- Save a copy of the result and note any mismatch before buying, importing or driving the car.
The lookup confirms information recorded by RDW for that registration number. It is not a substitute for checking that the VIN on the car and documents agree, nor does it independently certify later modifications that were not reported to RDW. If the lookup does not find the plate, identifies a different vehicle, or leaves the approval status ambiguous, stop treating the vehicle as cleared and contact RDW with the registration number, VIN and documents.

- Compare the VIN on the Tesla with the VIN on the registration certificate and any CoC.
- Compare the make and model description, including any variant or version information shown in the record.
- Check whether the person selling the vehicle can provide the original certificate rather than an unexplained scan or altered copy.
- Ask about repairs, conversions or other changes made after the vehicle was first approved.
A Dutch plate is strong evidence that the vehicle is recorded in the Netherlands, but a buyer should still resolve an identity or document mismatch before relying on it. RDW’s published information does not provide a universal online decision for every unusual history, so a case-specific question is the right response to an unresolved record.

Tesla registered in another EU country
Use the European registration certificate as the starting evidence
RDW says a European vehicle registration certificate is evidence of approval for registration in the Netherlands. For that situation, a separate CoC is not mandatory for Dutch registration, although a CoC can contain useful technical data. Keep the complete foreign certificate, including pages or sections that list the VIN, approval details and technical characteristics.
When an eCoC lookup is useful
RDW offers a digital CoC check using the VIN. The check is useful when you need the technical information in a CoC or want to see whether an electronic document is available before an import appointment.
- Open RDW’s Certificate of Conformity application and eCoC check.
- Enter the VIN exactly as printed on the vehicle and the foreign documents.
- Complete the requested contact details and submit the request.
- If RDW finds an electronic CoC, it says it will email the document or instructions for obtaining it. Compare the document’s VIN and vehicle description with the Tesla.
- If no document is returned, request a CoC from the manufacturer rather than concluding that the vehicle is unapproved.
A missing eCoC result means that RDW did not return a digital record through that service. RDW cautions that not all member states may yet be connected to the system. On the page accessed on 13 October 2026, RDW also states that manufacturers or their EU representatives must supply eCoCs digitally from 29 November 2026. That future requirement does not turn every current search failure into proof of non-approval.
Preparing for Dutch registration
If you live in the Netherlands and are importing the Tesla, Government.nl advises booking an RDW inspection and bringing the foreign registration certificate, valid identification and supporting documents such as a CoC or foreign inspection report when relevant. The inspection and paperwork route can vary with the vehicle’s origin and documents. Follow RDW’s instructions for the appointment rather than assuming that an eCoC alone completes registration.

Tesla imported from outside the EU
Why the route is different
A vehicle from outside the EU may not have the European type approval needed for ordinary registration. RDW explains that vehicles without type approval may need individual approval. The precise route depends on the documentation and import circumstances: some documented cases require vehicle identification and document verification, while others require a technical inspection at RDW’s Lelystad test centre.
Documents to assemble before contacting RDW
- The Tesla’s VIN and clear photographs or readings of its identification markings.
- The complete foreign registration certificate, if one exists.
- Any CoC, manufacturer approval document or other evidence of the vehicle’s technical specification.
- A foreign inspection report where applicable.
- Valid identification and import or ownership documents requested for the appointment.
- A written description of modifications, conversions or replacement components.
Use RDW’s guidance on getting a vehicle from outside Europe approved to identify the applicable application and inspection route. Do not book work on the assumption that a European Tesla of the same model year will automatically qualify; equipment, software, construction and documentation can differ between markets.
What happens after approval
Government.nl’s import guidance describes the steps that may follow a successful RDW decision: receiving a Dutch registration certificate, obtaining plates, arranging motor vehicle tax and carrying at least third-party liability insurance. An APK inspection may be required, and the importer may need to file BPM. The exact requirements depend on the vehicle and import situation, so treat this as a sequence of obligations rather than a guarantee that every Tesla follows identical timing or paperwork.

Teslas with major modifications
Government.nl says a vehicle that has undergone major modifications after receiving its EU registration certificate must be approved by RDW through a modification inspection. This rule matters even when the underlying Tesla model originally had European type approval. A modification can change the configuration for which the original approval was granted, so the original CoC or foreign certificate cannot by itself settle the modified vehicle’s status.

How to handle a modified vehicle
- Write down what was changed, who performed the work and when.
- Collect invoices, engineering documents, certificates and photographs that identify the parts or systems involved.
- Keep the original registration certificate and CoC; do not discard evidence of the unmodified configuration.
- Contact RDW and ask which modification-inspection route applies before using the vehicle on public roads.
- Follow the inspection outcome and update the registration record if RDW requires it.
Do not assume that a modification is acceptable merely because the car still starts, charges or passes a private diagnostic scan. A scanner can reveal faults, and a charging accessory can supply electricity, but neither establishes type approval or Dutch registration.

RDW published an explanation on 10 April 2026 about European type approval for Tesla’s FSD Supervised driver-assistance system. RDW described the system as driver-controlled, said it does not make the vehicle self-driving, and stated that the system’s type approval was then valid only in the Netherlands.
That notice concerns a particular driver-assistance system. It does not establish that every Tesla model, imported configuration or individual vehicle is registered in the Netherlands, has the required vehicle type approval, or is unchanged from its approved configuration. A Tesla can have a feature covered by an approval notice while still requiring a separate check of its own registration, VIN, import history and modifications. Conversely, a vehicle can have a valid registration record without every software feature being covered by that notice.

When contacting RDW, provide one coherent package: registration number if available, VIN, country of current registration, country of manufacture or import, copies of every certificate, and a dated description of modifications. Clear chronology helps RDW determine whether the question is ordinary registration, missing documentation, individual approval or a modification inspection.
Documents and checks to complete before driving or buying
- Identity: VIN on the vehicle matches every certificate and the RDW record.
- Jurisdiction: You know whether the Tesla is Dutch-registered, EU-registered elsewhere or imported from outside the EU.
- Approval evidence: You have the Dutch type approval number, European registration certificate, CoC/eCoC or RDW individual-approval documentation that applies to this vehicle.
- History: Import events and major modifications are disclosed and documented.
- Registration steps: For an import, you know which RDW appointment, APK, BPM, plate, tax and insurance obligations apply to your case.
- Uncertainty: Any unresolved discrepancy has been sent to RDW for a case-specific answer rather than being inferred from a similar Tesla.
Keep electronic copies as well as originals. A seller’s statement, a generic model specification or a feature announcement cannot replace the vehicle-specific records.
The practical answer
For a Tesla with a Dutch plate, check the plate in RDW’s registration-number service and match the result and type approval number to the VIN. For a Tesla registered elsewhere in the EU, retain the European registration certificate and use RDW’s VIN-based eCoC check when technical data is needed; a missing eCoC result is not conclusive proof of non-approval. For a non-EU import or a Tesla with major modifications, follow RDW’s individual-approval or modification-inspection route. Keep FSD Supervised approval separate from all three vehicle checks.
These steps establish a defensible way to determine what is recorded and what still needs RDW’s decision. They cannot determine the status of a particular Tesla without its VIN, registration number, origin and history.
