Check the car’s identity, history and recalls before travelling; inspect and drive the actual vehicle; then arrange an independent inspection if anything remains uncertain. The right maintenance schedule, equipment and technical checks depend on the exact DS model, year and powertrain, so do not assume one model’s requirements apply across the range.
What information should you get before arranging a viewing?
Ask the seller for the registration, exact model and trim, first-registration date or model year, engine or powertrain, current mileage, and available service records. Also ask whether the car has been in a collision, written off, imported or modified. These details help you check the right vehicle and find information that applies to its particular version.

For a car registered in the UK
Use the registration to check the vehicle details held by the DVLA and to find its MOT history. You may need the registration, make and model, and MOT test number for particular checks. Compare the official records with what the seller has told you, including the model description and recorded mileage.

Check the V5C registration certificate and ask that its details be available to compare with the vehicle at the viewing. A V5C is not, by itself, proof that the person presenting it has an unrestricted right to sell the car; verify the seller’s identity and authority to sell as well.
For a car registered elsewhere
Registration documents, vehicle-history records, inspection systems and recall databases vary by country. Use the relevant official authorities for the car’s registration market rather than treating UK terms such as V5C or MOT as universal. If the car was imported, check both the available records and the import documentation; a gap in one country’s record may not explain the car’s full history.
How should you check a used DS’s history?
Read the MOT record as a timeline
For a UK-registered car, review the official MOT history for test dates, mileage, failures and advisories. Look for a mileage progression that makes sense and note recurring advisories, changes in recorded condition, or long gaps. An advisory is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis. Ask the seller what was done about relevant findings and look for supporting invoices or later inspection results.

A pass does not establish that every mechanical or electrical system is sound, and an MOT record is not a complete service history. Treat it as one part of the picture, alongside the car’s service documents, condition and a competent inspection.
Match service records to dates and mileage
Ask for service records, itemised invoices and any documents for repairs or maintenance. Check that the dates and mileages broadly align with the car’s history. Note missing periods, unclear descriptions or work the seller says was done but cannot document, then ask specific follow-up questions.

A missing invoice is a question to resolve, not proof that work was skipped. Ask what maintenance is due next and verify the answer against the handbook and technical information for the exact model and powertrain, or with an authorised service source. Do not apply a maintenance interval from a different DS model or engine.
Investigate accident, write-off and import history
Ask the seller directly about collisions, insurance write-offs, imports and modifications. If a UK car has a repaired write-off history, follow the government’s guidance: check its VIN against its logbook and records, review its history and MOT records, and examine its service history. Consider an independent engineer’s report, particularly if repairs may have affected the structure.

How can you check for outstanding recalls?
For a UK-registered vehicle, use the government recall-check service with the registration. If the registration check does not identify the result, the service also allows a check using the manufacturer, model and year. Recall information is specific to the vehicle and can change, so check close to the time of purchase rather than relying on an old search or a listing description.
If a recall appears, ask the manufacturer or an authorised service centre to confirm whether the campaign has been completed for that particular car. Request evidence of completion before paying. A recall lookup is a way to identify a possible open campaign; it does not establish that all recall work has been performed or that the rest of the vehicle is mechanically sound.

Which DS handbook and technical information should you use?
DS Automobiles’ official handbook catalogue is organised by model and issue period. Find the handbook that matches the car rather than assuming controls, equipment or specifications are the same across generations. Use it to understand the fitted equipment, dashboard symbols and operating instructions.
Some technical information depends on the VIN. Confirm maintenance requirements, equipment and any vehicle-specific technical details using the exact model and powertrain, and seek an authorised service source where the handbook does not settle a question. The model-neutral checks in this guide cannot establish a particular DS’s service interval, warranty coverage, common faults or specification.
What should you verify against the car at the viewing?
Confirm the vehicle’s identity
Compare the registration and VIN on the vehicle with the registration document. In the UK, check that the VIN and engine number match the V5C and that the document details agree with the car. If a number is missing, altered, illegible or inconsistent, ask for a credible explanation and independent verification before proceeding. Do not buy while an identity discrepancy remains unresolved.
Check the seller’s identity and right to sell, and make sure you are inspecting the vehicle described in the documents and advertisement. If the seller makes a promise about a repair, included equipment or condition, ask for it in writing rather than relying on a conversation.
Review the paperwork with the vehicle present
Compare service documents and invoices with the odometer reading and the history you reviewed before travelling. Ask about gaps or inconsistencies and what maintenance is due next. Record the seller’s explanation and any work they agree to complete; then verify important technical claims for the exact car rather than taking a generic answer as confirmation.

What should you inspect on the body, cabin and outside of the car?
A walk-around is a screening check, not a formal roadworthiness inspection. The DVSA MOT inspection manual covers categories including vehicle identification, brakes, tyres, lights, emissions, malfunction indicator lamps and fluid leaks. Use the visible checks below to identify questions for the seller or an independent inspector, not to certify the car as safe.
Tyres, wheels, brakes and lights
- Look at all four tyres for visible damage, uneven wear and obvious differences in condition. Check that the fitted tyres appear appropriate for the vehicle and that the wheels are not visibly damaged. A tread-depth gauge can help measure tread, but it does not assess the rest of the tyre or the vehicle.
- Look through the wheels for visible signs of brake wear or damage, while recognising that a view from outside cannot establish brake condition. During a safe, legal drive, note whether braking feels abnormal, the car pulls, or there is unusual noise or vibration.
- Check that exterior lamps and indicators work, and inspect the glass for visible cracks or damage. Ask for any relevant defects to be addressed and documented before purchase.
Bodywork, signs of repair and cabin wear
- Look along the body for uneven panel gaps, differences in paint appearance, poor finishing or signs that a panel has been repaired or replaced. These observations are reasons to ask questions, not proof of a collision or structural damage.
- Check the seats, steering wheel, pedals and controls for condition that seems inconsistent with the stated mileage or history. Wear alone cannot establish that the odometer is inaccurate, but it can help identify a discrepancy to investigate.
- Check that the interior equipment described in the advertisement is present and that the controls operate as expected, using the correct handbook to identify functions. Do not infer that a feature is fitted simply because another version of the model has it.
Leaks and warning lamps
Look for visible fluid leaks under the car and in the engine bay where safely accessible. Check the dashboard for warning lamps or messages. Use the matching handbook to interpret symbols; a warning light should be diagnosed rather than dismissed based on a seller’s reassurance. An observation at the viewing can flag a problem but cannot, by itself, identify its cause.

Start it from cold if possible
Arrange to see the car when it has not already been warmed up, if practical. Observe the start-up, dashboard lamps and messages, and listen for unusual sounds. A cold start may reveal behaviour that is not apparent once the vehicle is warm, but a normal start does not prove that the car has no faults.
Drive in varied conditions where safe and legal
With the seller’s permission and appropriate insurance, drive the actual car rather than relying only on a demonstration. Include low-speed manoeuvres and normal road speeds where conditions allow. Pay attention to steering, braking, acceleration and transmission behaviour, and to unusual noise, vibration, pulling or warning messages. For an automatic or other transmission, hesitation is a prompt to investigate, not proof of a specific defect.

What extra checks apply to a plug-in hybrid or electric DS?
For a plug-in hybrid or electric model, check the charging equipment supplied with the car, where applicable, and ask to see charging operation. Review available range information and any battery warranty or health documents against the exact model and market. Verify warranty terms and eligibility from the relevant vehicle documentation or an authorised source.
Battery thresholds, warranty terms and specifications are not established generically for every DS model, year or country. Do not use a figure or warranty statement for a different vehicle as evidence about the car you are considering. If charging behaviour, range or battery condition is material to your decision, ask a qualified technician to assess the specific vehicle.
When is an independent inspection worth arranging?
Arrange an independent inspection when records are incomplete, the car shows signs of repair, a drive raises questions, or you cannot confidently assess its mechanical condition. It is especially prudent when there is a repaired write-off history or a possible structural repair. Ask the inspector to examine the actual car and report findings in a form you can consider before committing to the purchase.

A vehicle-history report and an MOT result are useful inputs, not substitutes for a mechanical inspection. The US Federal Trade Commission also advises that a mechanical inspection is a good idea even when a dealer says a car is certified and inspected or sells it with a warranty or service contract. That advice is specific to its consumer guidance and does not replace local rules or the terms of a particular sale.
Use the inspection to clarify uncertainties, not as a guarantee that a used vehicle will have no future faults. If an important finding is disputed, ask for a diagnosis from a suitable specialist or make the purchase conditional on resolving it.
What should be settled before you pay?
- Resolve identity and history discrepancies. Do not proceed while a VIN, registration, document or mileage inconsistency remains unexplained.
- Confirm recall status. If a recall is listed, obtain evidence from the manufacturer or an authorised service centre that the campaign has been completed for this car.
- Agree repairs and promises in writing. Note what work will be done, what equipment is included and when the seller says it will be completed.
- Consider inspection findings before committing. For material concerns, arrange an independent inspection and decide whether to proceed, renegotiate or walk away based on its findings.
- Check insurability where history warrants it. For a repaired write-off or suspected structural repair, confirm that the car can be insured before buying.
If you are choosing between listings, compare like with like: exact model, year and powertrain; service-record completeness; mileage and MOT or equivalent inspection pattern; recall completion; accident or write-off history; independent inspection findings; remaining warranty; and likely near-term maintenance based on the specific cars. A higher mileage or an advisory is not a verdict by itself; weigh the evidence consistently across the vehicles.
Which checks depend on the country and exact model?
Registration paperwork, mileage and inspection databases, recall systems, warranty terms and consumer protections vary by market. The DVLA, V5C, DVSA MOT history and GOV.UK recall check described here are UK examples. Outside the UK, use the official authorities for the vehicle’s registration country. FTC advice cited here concerns the US market.
