Start with the court that handled your traffic ticket, not your local DMV. In the California examples below, the traffic school reports completion to the court electronically, and the court notifies the DMV. Check your court case status or contact the court to confirm receipt; the exact steps and timing depend on the jurisdiction.

Check the court that handled your ticket

Your ticket, courtesy notice, or court correspondence should identify the court. In the California process described by the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, the court is the place to ask whether traffic-school completion was received, even if your question is whether the DMV has it. The court says it notifies the DMV electronically after completion is reported to the court. This sequence is specific to the California examples here, not a nationwide rule. San Diego Superior Court’s traffic-school instructions explain the process.

Look up the ticket or case status

Use the ticket or case-status lookup provided by the court that handled your citation. For Los Angeles Superior Court, the lookup instructions require selecting the assigned court and issuing agency, then entering the citation number and birth date. Its guide says the result “Case Status: Dismissed” means, “Your traffic school completion certificate has been received by the court.” Status labels and lookup requirements vary by court, so do not assume that “Dismissed” has the same meaning everywhere. Los Angeles Superior Court traffic case status information.

Allow the court’s processing time

Completion may take several business days to appear in a court record. Local California examples differ: Alameda County advises waiting five to seven business days after completing the course, while Solano County says it can retrieve an electronic certificate five business days after completion. These are county-specific estimates, not a universal DMV deadline. Follow the instructions for the court on your ticket. If the certificate is not showing, contact the court

If the status does not confirm receipt after the court’s stated processing window, contact the court location where the ticket was filed and ask whether the certificate arrived and was credited to your case. San Diego Superior Court specifically directs people with this question to the court handling the citation. Have your citation or case number ready; the court can tell you what other details it needs. San Diego Superior Court traffic-school help.

Check that your course enrollment details match

San Diego Superior Court tells students to provide the school with their full name, date of birth, driver license number, case or citation number, and court code. It warns that missing, inaccurate, or mismatched enrollment information may prevent completion from being credited. These are San Diego’s stated instructions; another court may ask for different information. If the court cannot match the completion to your case, ask what needs correcting and whether the school must resend the report. San Diego Superior Court traffic-school instructions.

Do not mistake DMV’s school lookup for a personal receipt check

California DMV lists a “Traffic School Lookup” among its online services, but the listing does not describe it as a tool for checking whether your individual certificate reached the DMV. For the California court process above, use the ticket court’s case lookup or contact that court instead. California DMV online services.

If your ticket was outside California

The steps, reporting sequence, status wording, and processing window may differ by state and court. Use the court’s directions for the citation—not a generic DMV assumption—and ask that court which office can confirm completion was received and credited. The California county timelines and Los Angeles status label in this article should not be treated as rules for another jurisdiction.
