The paddles ask the transmission to select a gear or range; they do not necessarily turn the car into a conventional manual. Whether paddle input is temporary, how the car handles automatic shifts, and how to return to normal drive depend on the vehicle. Check the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year, and trim before relying on a particular procedure.
What the plus and minus paddles do
The minus paddle commonly requests a lower gear or range, while the plus paddle commonly requests a higher one. A lower selection can raise engine speed and provide more engine braking. The transmission may refuse a downshift if its controls determine that the request should not be carried out; do not keep repeating a rejected request.
Honda’s 2019 Fit Owner’s Guide describes using the paddles to change gears from first through seventh on that equipped model. That gear count is specific to the example, not a standard for all paddle-shift vehicles.
How paddle mode differs between vehicles
Paddles can temporarily alter the selected gear while the transmission is in D, or work as part of a separate S, M, or other mode. The mode name, entry procedure, duration, automatic shift behavior, and way back to ordinary automatic operation are not standardized.

These examples illustrate why a sequence that works in one car should not be presented as universal. Some vehicles select fixed gears, others use ranges, and automatic protections or return-to-D behavior can vary.
When to use paddle shifters
For more engine braking
A lower range can increase engine braking and engine revolutions, which may help you manage speed without relying only on the service brakes. Toyota’s 2025 Crown Signia manual describes this effect and notes that a requested downshift may sometimes be restricted.

On a steep descent
Slow before the descent, then use a suitable lower gear or range according to your car’s manual. Toyota’s 2020 Corolla manual advises using engine braking on steep descents and warns that continuous brake use can overheat the brakes and reduce their effectiveness. Continue to use the brakes as needed; the manual’s guidance is not a universal gear or speed prescription.
When you want a different response
A selected lower gear or range may be useful when the driving situation calls for more engine braking or a different acceleration response. The exact effect, available selections, and conditions for use depend on the transmission. Follow the operating guidance for the specific vehicle rather than assuming the paddles always hold one gear or behave like a manual gearbox.

Use the paddles safely
- Read the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle before using an unfamiliar paddle or drive mode.
- Watch the gear or range display so you know what the transmission accepted.
- If a downshift is refused, do not repeatedly force the request; the vehicle may be applying its own operating limits.
- On descents, choose a suitable range before relying on engine braking, and use the brakes as needed.
What to check in your owner’s manual
Look up the transmission or driving section and confirm how to enter paddle mode in D and any S or M mode, whether the selection is temporary, when the transmission shifts automatically, what limits apply, and how to return to ordinary automatic operation. The manuals cited here are representative model-specific examples, not instructions for every car.
