A listing or regulatory approval does not by itself prove that a dealer can deliver the car now.
The process differs between Australia and New Zealand. Australia has government model and approval databases that are useful starting points. New Zealand’s transport-agency information explains electric-vehicle types and charging, but you generally need the local importer or dealer for a current sales and stock answer.

What “available” can mean
People use “available” for several different situations. Decide which one you need before searching, because each requires different evidence.

For a purchase decision, record the country, exact model and variant, model year, new or used status, orderability, stated delivery window and whether a vehicle identification number (VIN) has been allocated. Treat stock claims as time-sensitive and reconfirm them immediately before paying a deposit.

Identify the vehicle and powertrain you are checking
Separate BEVs from PHEVs
“Electric car” can describe two different powertrains. The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) defines a battery electric vehicle (BEV) as one where “these are powered by a battery only.” A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has both an externally charged battery and a fuel engine: NZTA describes these as having “two engines – one powered by a battery that is charged externally, the other is fuel powered and generally uses petrol or diesel.”
Use the same category in every search. Selecting a pure-electric filter will exclude PHEVs, while a broad search may return both and make a model appear available when only its hybrid version is sold.
Write down the exact configuration
- Manufacturer name as used in the local market and any global name or badge.
- Model, body style and model year.
- Battery-only (BEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
- Trim, battery size, motor layout, drivetrain and seating configuration.
- New, demonstrator, used or parallel-import status.
- Your acceptable delivery date and whether you need a vehicle already registered in the country.
These details prevent a dealer from answering for a different battery, trim or market specification.
How to check availability in Australia
1. Search the Green Vehicle Guide
The Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide vehicle search is the first model-level check. Its electric-vehicle information directs shoppers to the tool for models available for purchase in Australia and estimated battery range.
- Open the Green Vehicle Guide vehicle search.
- Enter the manufacturer and model. If you are checking BEVs only, select the pure electric option.
- Open the result that matches the body style and model year, rather than assuming every result for a model has the same battery or equipment.
- Record the displayed variant name, estimated battery range and any other identifying information.
- Save the search date. The page is a starting record, not a live promise of dealer stock.
An entry is useful evidence that the Australian government’s vehicle information system recognises the model, but it does not tell you whether a distributor is taking orders today.
2. Check the same car in the VESR browse and compare tool
Use the Vehicle Emissions Star Rating (VESR) browse and compare tool as a second Australian check. It supports make and model searches, year and variant selection, and comparison of up to four vehicles. Its electric browse view displayed 551 records when accessed for this guide; that is a live database count, not a permanent total of electric cars available in Australia.

- Choose the electric vehicle browse view.
- Search by make and model, then select the relevant year.
- Choose the closest exact variant, including battery or drivetrain differences where shown.
- Add up to four candidates if you are comparing alternatives.
- Capture the variant, electricity-consumption information, estimated annual electricity cost and star rating shown for each record.
Range figures in these tools are test results. Weather, speed, payload, heating or cooling and driving style can produce different real-world results, so do not treat a displayed range as a guaranteed distance between charges.

A blank VESR result is not proof that the car cannot be bought in Australia. VESR identifies several reasons a vehicle may be absent:
- A newly released model may not have received a rating yet.
- The manufacturer may not have submitted the required data.
- The Australian name may differ from the global or overseas name.
- The record may be filed under a different model year, body style or variant.
- Specialist imports are excluded, and some other vehicle types or older vehicles fall outside the tool’s scope.
Try the manufacturer’s global name, an alternate local name, nearby model years and each variant. Then check the Green Vehicle Guide and ask the local distributor whether the vehicle is a new local offering, a delayed database record or an import-only vehicle.
4. Use the Register of Approved Vehicles for regulatory context
The Australian Government’s Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) is “an online publicly searchable database of vehicles that have met the requirements of the RVSA and been approved for provision to the Australian market.” Search it when you need to know whether a particular vehicle type has an Australian approval record.
RAV status answers a regulatory question, not a retail one. A vehicle can be approved yet not be marketed by an Australian distributor, and an approval entry is not a dealer-stock feed. Use it alongside the model searches and a seller’s written offer.

5. Confirm the exact car with an Australian seller
Contact the Australian manufacturer, authorised distributor or dealer after the database checks. Ask for a written answer to each point:

- Is this exact model year, trim, battery and drivetrain currently sold in Australia?
- Can you place a factory or distributor order now?
- What is the expected delivery window, and is it an estimate or a scheduled allocation?
- Is the quoted vehicle new, a demonstrator, used or a parallel import?
- Is a specific VIN allocated, and where is the vehicle physically located?
- Are the quoted price, warranty, charging equipment and software features for the Australian specification?
Ask the seller to distinguish an incoming allocation from a car already on the premises. If the answer changes between the database record and the dealer, rely on the seller’s current, model-specific confirmation for an order decision and retain the date of that confirmation.
How to check availability in New Zealand
1. Use NZTA for definitions and context, not a stock catalogue
NZTA’s electric-vehicle information page explains BEVs, PHEVs and related official information. It also describes EVRoam, a live database of public charging stations. EVRoam is charging infrastructure information, not an inventory of vehicles for sale.
The NZTA page reviewed does not function as a complete, current catalogue of every new electric model offered in New Zealand. Do not interpret an NZTA page, charging-station result or vehicle definition as proof that a particular trim is orderable.
2. Search the New Zealand importer or brand site
- Search for the manufacturer’s New Zealand site or the authorised local importer, using the local model name and the exact powertrain.
- Check the new-vehicle page for the model, grade, battery and current purchase or order language.
- Look for a stock, demonstrator or dealer-inventory section, but treat web availability as provisional until a seller confirms it.
- Contact the importer or a franchised dealer with the model year, trim and battery details.
- Ask whether the car can be ordered, the expected delivery window, and whether a specific vehicle is physically in New Zealand.
Importer guidance surfaced in NZTA search results says new-vehicle distributors undertake entry certification at model level and refers to vehicle data appearing in dealer bulk enquiry in Rightcar. The underlying guidance page returned a 403 error when accessed, so treat that detail as a lead to verify directly with NZTA or the importer rather than as a complete description of the certification process.
3. If the model is absent from the local site
Ask the importer to classify the situation. The model may not be marketed locally, may be temporarily unavailable, may be forthcoming, or may be obtainable only as an imported used vehicle. A model sold in Australia, Europe or another overseas market is not evidence that the same specification is sold new in New Zealand.
For an imported used vehicle, request proof of its entry status, registration pathway, warranty coverage, charging compatibility and parts support. Those questions concern a different purchase route from ordering a new vehicle through the local distributor.

4. Confirm New Zealand stock with the seller
Ask the dealer to identify whether the car is new, a demonstrator, used or an independently imported vehicle. Confirm the physical location, VIN or stock number, odometer reading where relevant, battery and software specification, estimated handover date and conditions attached to the quote. A dealer’s statement about one vehicle should not be generalised to the entire model range.

Compare Australian or New Zealand candidates without mixing records
When two or more cars look suitable, compare them only after separating country and seller status. A model record from Australia and an importer listing in New Zealand may represent different model years, equipment or warranties.

Australia’s Green Vehicle Guide and VESR can supply official comparison fields for Australian records. They do not replace a New Zealand importer’s specification sheet, and neither country’s reviewed official sources provides a complete live-stock check covering every seller.

The Australian Government’s 2025 annual update reported 153 electric-vehicle models available by June 2025, compared with 56 in 2021–22 and 104 in 2023–24. The model data came from the Blue Flag Vehicle Database accessed in June 2025. This is a dated Australia-wide context figure, not a live count and not a list of cars currently sitting at dealers.
The same update reported nearly 128,000 electric vehicles, or 10.9% of new light-vehicle sales, in financial year 2024–25. It separated that total into about 87,500 BEVs (7.4%) and 40,500 PHEVs (3.4%). These figures describe Australian sales for that financial year; they do not estimate New Zealand demand or establish the availability of a particular model today.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
The model appears in one database but not another
Check spelling, local and global names, model year, body style and powertrain. Review the scope of each database: a delayed rating, missing manufacturer submission or specialist-import exclusion can explain a VESR omission. Ask the local seller whether the model is newly launched or sold through a non-standard import route.

The seller says “available” but cannot give a date
Ask whether “available” means accepting an order, allocated to a future shipment or physically in stock. Request a written delivery window and ask what event would change it. Do not treat a general order page as confirmation of a particular vehicle.
The advertised vehicle is not the specification you searched
Match the VIN, stock number, battery, drivetrain, trim and model year. A similarly named overseas vehicle may have different charging hardware, safety equipment, software, warranty or certification.
A car is approved but no dealer will sell it
RAV approval addresses provision to the Australian market; it does not require a distributor to offer the model. Ask whether an authorised importer has a sales program. If not, investigate the separate used or parallel-import pathway and its compliance and warranty implications.

Inventory changes quickly. Ask the seller to reconfirm that the vehicle remains unsold, identify its location and provide the latest handover estimate before you pay a deposit. Keep the seller’s name, vehicle identifier and confirmation date with your purchase records.
A practical verification checklist
- Define whether you need a BEV or PHEV.
- Write down the exact model year, trim, battery and drivetrain.
- For Australia, search the Green Vehicle Guide with the pure-electric filter when appropriate.
- Check the Australian VESR record and select the matching year and variant.
- If no Australian result appears, retry alternate names and years and ask the distributor why.
- Use RAV to check Australian approval context, without treating it as a stock list.
- For New Zealand, use NZTA for powertrain definitions and charging information, then move to the local importer or dealer for sales status.
- Ask every seller whether the car is locally offered, orderable, incoming, physically in stock, new, demonstrator, used or parallel imported.
- Obtain the delivery window, VIN or stock number where possible, and the exact country specification in writing.
- Recheck all availability and stock claims immediately before committing, because listings, allocations and delivery dates can change.
This workflow gives you evidence in the right order: a government or importer record identifies what may exist, a local seller confirms whether it can be ordered, and a vehicle-specific confirmation establishes whether a particular car is actually available.
