The reliable way to tell whether a particular Audi A8 has adaptive air suspension is to identify the car by its VIN, open the matching Audi owner’s manual, and then verify the suspension controls in the MMI. In the manual, search for “air suspension,” “vehicle level,” and “Audi drive select.” A suspension-level display in the MMI is useful supporting evidence, but it is not a substitute for the VIN-specific factory equipment record. If you also need to know whether the system works, arrange a separate inspection by a qualified Audi technician.
What adaptive air suspension does on an Audi A8
Adaptive air suspension uses air-filled suspension components and electronic control to vary the car’s body height. Audi describes the system as adjusting the vehicle to different levels according to speed and driver preference, while also automatically compensating for load. The settings are integrated with Audi drive select; Audi’s technical overview states that “The adaptive air suspension can be configured via Audi drive select.” You can read the overview at Audi’s Suspension Technology Lexicon.

On an A8, the air-suspension struts are used at the front and rear axles. Audi notes that this rear-axle arrangement differs from the layout it describes for most of its other models. That technical description explains what the system is, but it does not establish that every A8 in every market or model year has it. Equipment can vary by model series, market, trim, options and production configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor that reason, there are two separate questions:
- Is adaptive air suspension fitted? Use the VIN-matched manual, MMI evidence and the vehicle’s factory equipment record.
- Is the fitted system healthy? Have the individual car inspected. A menu, sticker or build record can show equipment presence but cannot prove that compressors, air springs, valves, sensors and control functions are operating correctly.
The most reliable checking sequence
Use these checks in order. They move from authoritative identification to in-car confirmation and finally to mechanical condition.

- Locate the car’s 17-character VIN.
- Enter the VIN in Audi’s official owner-manual portal and open the manual for that exact vehicle.
- Search the manual for “air suspension,” “vehicle level” and “Audi drive select.”
- With the ignition on, open the MMI path described by the manual and look for suspension-level information or settings.
- For a purchase, equipment dispute or incomplete vehicle history, request the VIN-specific factory equipment/build record from Audi or an Audi dealer.
- If operation matters, obtain a vehicle-specific inspection rather than relying on the menu or paperwork.
This sequence avoids a common mistake: treating a feature shown in one A8 manual or one car’s screen as a model-wide fitment rule.
Step 1: Find the correct VIN
Audi’s owner-manual portal recommends VIN lookup so that the documentation corresponds to the specific vehicle. Audi lists several places where the VIN may be found:
- At the base of the windshield, visible from outside the car.
- In the myAudi vehicle information.
- Within the vehicle’s MMI information screens.
Write the VIN down exactly, including every letter and number. A single transcription error can return the wrong manual or prevent a match. If you are viewing a used car, compare the windshield VIN with the VIN shown in the MMI and with the vehicle documents before treating any equipment information as definitive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 2: Use Audi’s VIN-matched owner’s manual
Open the Audi Owner’s Manual portal and use its vehicle-identification process. Audi says its online manuals cover model year 2008 onward and recommends selecting the manual by VIN. That coverage date concerns the portal’s documentation, not the date when adaptive air suspension became standard or optional on the A8.
Once the VIN-specific manual is open, use its search function for these terms:
| Search term | What it can reveal | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| air suspension | System descriptions, warnings, operating limits or adjustment instructions | Strong evidence that the manual includes air-suspension information for the selected vehicle; confirm the wording and applicability notes. |
| vehicle level | Instructions for viewing or changing body height | Useful indication of a level-control function, especially when the instructions match the car’s MMI. |
| Audi drive select | Drive-mode settings and suspension behavior | Look for language that explicitly applies to vehicles equipped with air suspension. |
Read the applicability statements around each result. Owner’s manuals often contain several equipment configurations in one document, so a general mention of air suspension is not automatically proof that the exact car has the option. The VIN selection and the manual’s “applies to vehicles with…” wording are important together.
Step 3: Check the MMI for suspension-level information
Turn the ignition on and compare the car’s MMI with the instructions in the VIN-matched manual. Audi says adaptive air suspension can be configured through Audi drive select, so suspension-related controls may appear with the drive-mode settings rather than in a separate menu labelled simply “air suspension.”

The 2021 A8 menu path
In the 2021 A8 owner’s-manual text reviewed, the vehicle-level display is reached through:
VEHICLE > Audi drive select
The instructions describe filled boxes indicating the current vehicle level; more filled boxes represent greater ground clearance. This is a model-year-specific menu description. MMI wording, icons and screen layout can vary by model year, software version and market, so do not assume that a different path means the car lacks air suspension. Use the applicable manual as the authority for the vehicle you are inspecting.
What counts as useful MMI evidence
- A vehicle-level or ground-clearance display that corresponds to the manual.
- Drive-select information that describes suspension behavior or available height settings.
- Warnings or status messages specifically referring to suspension level or air suspension.
What the MMI cannot prove
- It cannot establish that the software screen belongs to the exact VIN if the MMI has been replaced or reprogrammed.
- It cannot prove that the compressor, air springs, valves, height sensors or wiring are functioning correctly.
- The absence of an obvious “air suspension” button does not by itself disprove the system; Audi may place the controls inside Audi drive select, and menu labels differ by year.
Photograph the MMI screen and record the software or model-year information if you are evaluating a car remotely. Treat the image as supporting evidence until it is matched to the VIN-specific equipment record.
Step 4: Confirm factory equipment by VIN
For a purchase, lease return, insurance question or dispute over advertised equipment, ask Audi or an Audi dealer for the individual vehicle’s factory equipment/build information. This is the best way to resolve cases in which the manual and MMI do not agree, the car has imported-market specifications, or components have been changed.
Audi’s delivery guidance treats equipment as model-specific, and Audi states that suspension-system design varies by model series. The available public material does not provide a complete, year-by-year A8 fitment chart that can replace a VIN lookup. A generic statement such as “all A8s have air suspension” is therefore too broad.
| Evidence | What it establishes | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| VIN-specific Audi manual | Which operating instructions and equipment references Audi assigns to that vehicle | Some manuals cover multiple configurations; read applicability notes. |
| MMI suspension-level screen | Strong in-car clue that the relevant control function is present | Does not verify factory originality or mechanical condition. |
| VIN-specific factory equipment/build record | Whether the feature was configured for that vehicle when built | Access may require Audi or a dealer; the public manual portal is not a complete build sheet. |
| Visual inspection alone | May show air-suspension components to an experienced technician | Not a dependable identification method for a buyer without technical training. |
How to separate equipment presence from system condition
An A8 can be equipped with adaptive air suspension and still have a fault, a slow leak or a disabled adjustment function. Identification and diagnosis require different evidence.
Presence check
Use the VIN-matched manual, matching MMI controls and the factory equipment record to answer whether the system was fitted. This is the appropriate evidence when an advertisement says “air suspension” or when you are comparing two used A8s.

Condition check
Ask a qualified Audi technician to inspect the particular car when ride height, reliability or repair risk matters. The inspection should be vehicle-specific and should address any suspension warning, uneven stance, inability to change level or evidence of the car settling while parked. Equipment identification alone is not a test of operation, and the sources do not establish a universal owner diagnostic procedure or a pass/fail measurement for every A8 year.
Do not infer a healthy system merely because the MMI displays a level. Conversely, do not infer missing equipment from a disabled or faulted screen before checking the VIN record and the correct manual.
Using Audi drive select to understand the display
Audi describes adaptive air suspension as responding to speed, driver preference and load. That means the displayed or selected level may not remain unchanged in every driving situation. Automatic adjustment for load is part of the system’s described behavior, so a screen showing a current level is not necessarily a promise that the car will hold one fixed ride height under all conditions.
When comparing the manual with the car, note three kinds of information:
- Selectable settings: which drive-select modes or level choices the manual says are available.
- Current status: the level indicator shown at the moment you inspect the car.
- Automatic behavior: the manual’s explanation of changes linked to speed, preference or load.
These are related but not interchangeable. A current-level indicator is a status view; it does not necessarily show every setting or explain why the vehicle may change height later.
Why model year and market matter
Do not transfer a menu path from one A8 to another without checking the VIN. The 2021 A8 transcription gives a clear example of a vehicle-level view inside Audi drive select, but its labels and screen arrangement are not a universal instruction for every A8. Earlier or later cars may use different wording, a different MMI generation or different regional equipment combinations.
The same caution applies to trim names and advertisements. “A8,” “A8 L” and a performance-oriented derivative can have different equipment configurations, and imported cars may follow the specifications of their original market. The model name alone is not enough to establish adaptive air suspension.

Audi’s owner-manual portal is documented for model year 2008 onward. For an older car outside that portal’s stated coverage, use the vehicle’s original documentation and obtain confirmation from Audi or a dealer rather than extrapolating from a newer manual.
A practical checklist for inspecting a used A8
Use this checklist before relying on an air-suspension claim in a listing or sales conversation.
- Record the VIN. Check it at the windshield, in the MMI and in the seller’s paperwork where available.
- Open the Audi manual portal. Select the manual by VIN, not only by a general A8 model name.
- Search the manual. Use “air suspension,” “vehicle level” and “Audi drive select.”
- Inspect the MMI. Follow the manual’s path; for a 2021 A8, start at
VEHICLE > Audi drive selectand look for the vehicle-level information described there. - Save evidence. Keep the VIN-matched manual reference and photographs of relevant MMI screens.
- Request the factory record. Ask Audi or a dealer to confirm the build configuration if the purchase depends on the feature.
- Separate identification from inspection. Arrange a technician’s evaluation if you need assurance that the suspension operates properly.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every A8 has the same suspension
A8 equipment is not safely inferred from the badge alone. Model series and delivery specifications can differ. Use the VIN-specific record instead of a blanket model claim.
Searching only for a button labelled “air suspension”
Audi integrates the system with Audi drive select. The relevant control may be a level display or drive-select setting rather than a dedicated button with that exact name.
Using a manual for the wrong year
The 2021 menu path is a useful example, not a universal path. Match the manual through the VIN and allow for MMI-version differences.
Treating a screen as proof of working hardware
Electronic menus can remain available when a system has a fault. A technician’s inspection is required for a condition judgment.

Confusing the portal’s coverage date with fitment history

Relying on a generic public fitment list
The available Audi material does not provide a complete public year-by-year A8 chart. A dealer or Audi build record is the appropriate escalation when the answer has financial consequences.
When the manual, MMI and seller’s claim disagree
Stop and resolve the conflict before treating the feature as confirmed. First, verify that the VIN was copied correctly and that the MMI belongs to the same vehicle. Next, open the manual again and read the applicability notes around the search result. Then ask Audi or a dealer for the VIN-specific factory equipment record.
If the record says the car was built with adaptive air suspension but the MMI does not show the expected controls, treat that as a possible software, display or system fault and arrange an inspection. If the MMI shows a level screen but the factory record does not list the feature, do not assume the car is factory-equipped; the vehicle may have had a replacement, retrofit, coding change or mismatched display. Only the individual vehicle’s documentation and inspection can resolve that case.

Give the technician the VIN, model year, any suspension warning text, photographs of the MMI screens and the circumstances in which the issue appears. Explain whether you are checking equipment presence, ride-height behavior or both. This prevents a general inspection from being mistaken for an equipment-verification report and helps the technician focus on the question that matters to you.
If you are buying the car, ask for the findings in writing, including whether the technician verified adaptive air suspension as fitted and whether any fault or abnormal behavior was observed. The build record answers the factory-equipment question; the inspection answers the present-condition question.
Bottom line
To check whether an Audi A8 has adaptive air suspension, use the VIN first: open Audi’s VIN-matched owner’s manual, search for the air-suspension and vehicle-level instructions, and compare them with the MMI’s Audi drive select screens. For a 2021 A8, the documented route is VEHICLE > Audi drive select, where filled boxes indicate the current level and more filled boxes indicate greater ground clearance. Confirm the factory configuration with Audi or a dealer when the answer affects a purchase, and commission a separate inspection if you need to know whether the system currently works.
