Short answer: An aftermarket or recycled part does not automatically void your car’s factory warranty. Under Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance, a manufacturer or dealer may refuse a warranty repair only when it can show that the part or its installation caused the failure being claimed. Unrelated systems remain covered. Insurance is a separate question: your policy, endorsements and state law control, and there is no single nationwide rule requiring every owner to disclose every modification. Check both sets of documents before installing a part, and get the insurer’s answer in writing.
What it means for a part to “affect” your coverage
People use “void the warranty” to describe several different outcomes. A warranty can remain active while one repair is denied, an insurer can cover the car but exclude an added component, or a modification can change the premium or the amount paid after a loss. Treat these as separate decisions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Factory warranty: the vehicle manufacturer’s written promise covering specified defects for a stated period or mileage. The question is whether the part or its installation caused the failure.
- Service contract: a separately purchased repair agreement. Its issuer, covered components, exclusions and claim process may differ from the factory warranty.
- Automobile insurance: a contract covering listed risks, subject to deductibles, limits, exclusions and valuation rules. An endorsement or rider can add, remove or modify coverage.
- Insurer-paid collision repair: a repair estimate may involve non-OEM parts under state rules. That is different from an owner installing a modification.
The exact result depends on the written warranty or service contract, the specific part and installation, the insurance policy and endorsements, and the law of the state where the vehicle is insured.

Aftermarket status alone is not a valid blanket denial
The FTC’s consumer guidance on auto warranties says a manufacturer or dealer cannot deny coverage simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part. The agency states: “The manufacturer or dealer must prove the aftermarket or recycled part caused the damage before they can deny warranty coverage.” This principle comes from the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act framework and the FTC’s explanations of warranty tying.

A dealer therefore should not reject every warranty claim merely because a non-OEM component appears on the vehicle. A denial must be connected to the failed component and supported by a causal explanation. The warranty’s other terms still apply: you must follow required maintenance, use the specified fluids or procedures where the warranty requires them, and present the vehicle through the stated claim process.
Causation is the practical dividing line
If a part is defective, incorrectly specified or installed poorly and that problem damages another covered component, the manufacturer or dealer may deny the repair for the damage it can attribute to that part or installation. For example, an incorrectly wired aftermarket accessory that shorts a body-control module, or an improperly installed suspension component that damages related steering hardware, presents a causation issue. The presence of the part is not, by itself, the explanation.
A causal denial is not the same as canceling the entire warranty. A failure in an unrelated system—such as an air-conditioning problem after an independently installed exhaust component—would require its own analysis. FTC rulemaking material explains that coverage cannot be refused for defects unrelated to an unauthorized article or service, while preserving an exception when the article or service caused the defect.

Find the warranty booklet supplied with the vehicle or the manufacturer’s official owner site. Record the warranty term, mileage limits, covered components, exclusions, maintenance requirements, authorized claim locations and notice deadlines. A factory warranty and a paid service contract can use different definitions and exclusions, so compare each document rather than assuming the longer document governs.
Factory warranty versus a service contract
Do not treat an extended warranty advertisement and the manufacturer’s warranty as interchangeable. A service contract is usually sold separately, may begin after the factory coverage ends, and can have its own administrator, authorization number, deductible, labor rate, parts rules and list of excluded components. Some contracts require preapproval before teardown or specify which repair facilities may be used. Read the contract’s maintenance, modification and inspection clauses before work begins.
Make a side-by-side list of who issued each agreement, the start and end dates, covered systems, consequential-damage language, wear-item exclusions, transfer rules and claim deadlines. If a service-contract administrator says an aftermarket part is excluded, ask whether the exclusion applies to that part only or to damage it allegedly caused. Request the contract section and a written technical explanation.

Step-by-step warranty check before and after installation
- Identify the exact coverage. Write down the warranty name, start date, expiration date or mileage, and the component you may need repaired. If the vehicle has a service contract, save that contract and its administrator’s contact information separately.
- Describe the proposed part precisely. Record the manufacturer, part number, revision if shown, intended function, date purchased and whether it replaces an original part or adds a new system. “Performance part” is too vague for a useful coverage review.
- Check compatibility and instructions. Save the installation manual, fitment notes, software version and any vehicle-specific warnings. A part designed for a different engine, voltage or load rating can create a stronger causation argument than a properly matched replacement.
- Document installation. Keep the installer’s business name, technician invoice, labor description, torque or alignment records when supplied, and any calibration or software documentation. If you install it yourself, keep the instructions and a dated record of the work.
- Photograph the condition. Take clear photographs of connectors, fasteners, routing, fluid levels, warning lights and the surrounding components before and after installation. Preserve removed original parts and packaging until the warranty period for the affected system ends.
- Check maintenance requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule and retain oil, filter, fluid and inspection receipts. FTC consumer advice notes that maintenance records can help demonstrate that required service was performed.
- Ask for clarification before authorizing work. If a dealer says a modification will void the warranty, ask which written provision applies and which failures it would affect. Request the answer by email or on the repair order; a verbal statement that “all warranties are void” does not identify causation.
- If a claim is denied, demand specifics. Request the denial in writing. Ask for the failed component, the evidence linking the part or installation to that failure, the warranty provision being applied and whether unrelated coverage remains available.
- Escalate a blanket refusal. Take the written denial to the dealer service manager or supervisor, then to the manufacturer’s customer-assistance channel or another authorized dealer. If the explanation still rests only on the part’s non-OEM status, FTC guidance identifies state or local consumer-protection offices and the FTC as possible complaint channels.
What a credible causation explanation should contain
A useful denial should identify the failed component, describe the inspection or diagnostic test, cite the warranty term and explain the chain of damage. “The car is modified” is a conclusion, not a technical explanation. Ask whether the same failure would be covered if the original part had remained installed, whether the part was tested, and whether another condition—such as missed maintenance, impact damage or ordinary wear—was considered.
The manufacturer may ask to inspect the part, retain failed components or authorize teardown. Cooperate while preserving copies of records and photographs. Do not discard a failed part or authorize irreversible repairs before you understand who will pay for diagnosis and whether the warranty requires prior approval.
How insurance treats modifications
Your policy and endorsements are the controlling documents
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes an insurance policy as a legal contract. The declarations page identifies the insured vehicle and key limits; the full contract supplies definitions, exclusions, deductibles, collision and comprehensive terms, and claim conditions. An endorsement or rider changes that contract by adding, deleting, excluding or modifying coverage, and it can change the premium.
Read those documents for the particular vehicle and state. Look for language about custom equipment, aftermarket equipment, permanently attached accessories, vehicle value, theft, racing or track use, business use, and required notification of changes. Do not assume that a provision applying to a total loss also applies to a partial collision repair.
There is no universal disclosure conclusion
The FTC and NAIC materials do not establish a nationwide rule that every owner must report every aftermarket part to an insurer. Some policies require notice of material changes, some offer a specific custom-parts endorsement, and some limit payment to the vehicle’s standard equipment unless additional coverage is purchased. State insurance law can add requirements. Only the insurer or licensed agent reviewing your policy can tell you how the modification affects eligibility, rating and claim payment.

A policy may pay the cost to repair or replace standard equipment while applying a separate dollar limit to custom parts. It may use actual cash value, replacement cost, stated amount or another method, with depreciation and a deductible. A part that increases the vehicle’s sale price may not increase the insurer’s automatic settlement value. Ask whether labor, paint, calibration, shipping and temporary substitutes are included and whether a total-loss settlement includes permanently attached equipment.

Step-by-step insurance check
- Collect the policy set. Download or obtain the current declarations page, full policy, all endorsements and renewal notices. Confirm the vehicle identification, garaging address, listed use, coverage limits and deductibles.
- Prepare a modification inventory. For each part, list the description, brand and part number, purchase price, installed value, installation date, installer, and purpose. Include wheels and tires, suspension, engine or exhaust changes, electronics, audio equipment, lighting, bodywork and permanent accessories when applicable.
- Separate safety or performance changes from appearance items. Tell the insurer about power, suspension, braking, lighting, fuel-system and software changes, not just expensive cosmetic parts. State whether the vehicle is used for commuting, competition, shows, towing or commercial work.
- Ask targeted questions. Give the insurer the inventory and ask: Does this change coverage, premium, eligibility or claim valuation? Is an endorsement required for these parts? If the vehicle is damaged, are the parts repaired, replaced, depreciated or excluded? If the vehicle is totaled, are their added costs included in the settlement? What documentation will be required?
- Get the answer in writing. Ask for the applicable policy language, endorsement form or written confirmation from the insurer. A call-center note without a policy change may not alter the contract.
- Review any endorsement against the original policy. Confirm the effective date, covered parts, dollar limit, deductible, exclusions, valuation method and premium change. Keep the signed or issued copy with your policy records. NAIC explains that an endorsement must be read together with the original agreement.
- Update the file after further work. Keep invoices, photographs, appraisals and installation records. Notify the insurer again if the vehicle’s equipment or value changes materially, following the policy’s notice procedure.
- Handle a disputed claim formally. Request the specific policy language and a written explanation of the adjustment or denial. Keep a dated log of calls and copies of estimates, emails and letters. If you believe the claim was handled unfairly, contact your state insurance department, as NAIC consumer guidance recommends.
Warranty and insurance questions to keep separate
| Question | Document or authority | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Will the manufacturer repair a failed component? | Factory warranty and claim records | Whether the aftermarket part or installation caused the specific failure; unrelated defects are not automatically excluded. |
| Will a separately purchased plan pay? | Service contract | Issuer, covered components, maintenance conditions, exclusions, authorization procedure and claim deadlines. |
| Is the modified equipment insured? | Policy, declarations page and endorsements | Whether the part is included, limited, excluded or subject to a separate custom-equipment limit and deductible. |
| Will the premium or eligibility change? | Insurer rating rules and any endorsement | Written confirmation of the rate, effective date and any conditions imposed by the insurer or state. |
| Which replacement part may an insurer specify after a crash? | State law, policy and repair estimate | Disclosure, fit, quality and like-kind-and-quality requirements applicable in that state. |
Special case: non-OEM parts in insurer-paid crash repairs
NAIC Model Regulation 891, the After Market Parts Model Regulation issued in April 2000, contains model provisions addressing certain aftermarket exterior parts used in insurer-paid collision repairs. It includes disclosure and minimum like-kind-and-quality concepts. It is model language for states to adopt, not proof that every state enacted identical rules or that the model is current law everywhere.
This model concerns an insurer’s repair payment and parts disclosure. It does not create a general rule for every owner-installed modification, and it does not answer whether your own aftermarket turbocharger, wheels, suspension or audio system is covered. Check the current statute, regulation or consumer guidance through your state insurance department and compare it with the repair estimate.
Evidence that protects a warranty or insurance claim
Build one file for the vehicle. Include the original warranty, service contract, declarations page, endorsements, part invoices, serial or part numbers, installation invoices, alignment and calibration records, maintenance receipts, photographs before and after installation, and all insurer or dealer correspondence. Date each item and note who supplied it.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Accepting a blanket statement: Ask for the exact provision and causal link instead of assuming every warranty is lost.
- Relying on a verbal insurance promise: Coverage changes only when the insurer issues the applicable endorsement or other contract document.
- Failing to update value: A collection of wheels, electronics or custom equipment can exceed a standard policy’s automatic limit.
- Mixing repair and modification rules: State rules about non-OEM collision parts do not automatically govern owner-installed upgrades.
- Ignoring use changes: Track events, racing, commercial use or increased towing may trigger separate exclusions or underwriting questions.
- Losing installation proof: Missing invoices, alignment records or wiring documentation can make a causation dispute harder to evaluate.
Common situations and the right next question
Replacement brake pads or filters
Ask the dealer to identify any claimed connection between the replacement part and the failed component. Keep the purchase and installation receipts, and continue the scheduled maintenance.
Wheels, tires or suspension changes
Document sizes, load ratings, alignment and installation. If a steering or suspension claim is denied, request evidence connecting the specific change to the damage rather than accepting a blanket “modified vehicle” explanation. Separately ask the insurer whether the equipment is included in collision, comprehensive and total-loss valuation.

Engine, turbocharger, exhaust or tuning changes
These changes can create a plausible causal question for powertrain, emissions or related electronic failures. Before installation, obtain the warranty’s exclusions and the insurer’s written position on coverage, use restrictions and valuation. A plausible risk is not proof that every unrelated claim is excluded.
Recommended Free Tools
Audio, lighting or other electrical accessories
Retain wiring diagrams, fuse information and the installer’s invoice. If an electrical module fails, the warranty analysis should address whether the accessory or wiring caused that module’s failure. Ask the insurer how permanently attached equipment is treated after theft, partial damage or a total loss.
When professional help is worthwhile
A licensed insurance agent can explain the current policy and request an endorsement; the insurer must issue any change for it to become part of the contract. A qualified repair shop can document installation, alignment, calibration and maintenance in a way that helps establish condition and causation. For a substantial warranty denial or high-value claim, a consumer attorney or state consumer-protection office can help interpret the written documents. None of these conversations replaces the policy, warranty or state law that governs the dispute.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do aftermarket parts automatically void a car warranty?
No. FTC consumer guidance says the manufacturer or dealer must show that the aftermarket or recycled part, or its installation, caused the damage before denying the affected warranty repair. Unrelated failures are not automatically excluded.
Can a dealer deny my entire warranty because one non-OEM part is installed?
A blanket refusal based only on non-OEM status is not the standard described by FTC guidance. Ask for the failed component, the causal evidence and the written warranty provision. Escalate an unsupported denial to a supervisor and the manufacturer.

Will insurance pay for aftermarket wheels or audio equipment after a crash?
It depends on the policy, endorsements, limits, valuation method and deductible. Some policies limit payment to standard equipment or impose a custom-parts limit. Provide invoices and ask how partial damage, theft and total loss are valued.
What should I do if a warranty claim is denied?
Request a written denial identifying the failed component, evidence of causation and the warranty term applied. Preserve records, ask for an inspection or test explanation, then contact the dealer supervisor, manufacturer and, if appropriate, consumer-protection authorities.
Is an extended warranty the same as the factory warranty?
Usually not. A service contract may have a different issuer, term, deductible, authorization process, exclusions and modification clauses. Compare both documents and follow the service contract’s preapproval requirements.
Are state rules about aftermarket collision parts the same everywhere?
No. NAIC Model Regulation 891 is model language issued in April 2000, not proof that every state adopted identical or current rules. Check your state insurance department and the repair estimate for applicable disclosure and quality requirements.
What records should I keep after installing a part?
Keep the part number and invoice, installer and labor details, manuals, photographs, alignment or calibration records, maintenance receipts, warranty and policy documents, endorsements, and all written communications about coverage or claims.
The Bottom Line
Aftermarket status alone does not void a factory warranty; the key warranty question is whether the part or installation caused the specific failure. Insurance depends on the policy, endorsements and state law, including how added equipment is valued. Inventory every modification, preserve installation and maintenance records, ask precise questions, and insist on written explanations before accepting a denial.
