To check whether a used car is still under warranty, match its VIN to the paperwork, review the dealer’s Buyers Guide, and ask a dealership for the car’s make to confirm the VIN-specific coverage. Get the answer in writing, including what is covered, the expiration date or mileage limit, and any conditions for getting repairs. A Buyers Guide, history report, or “as is” label alone cannot establish whether a manufacturer’s warranty remains active.
Start with the VIN and the car’s warranty documents
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is the key information a dealership needs to check manufacturer coverage. Find it on the car and compare it with the VIN on the Buyers Guide and sale paperwork. If the numbers do not match, stop and resolve the mismatch before relying on any warranty information. Make sure the VIN is consistent across the documents you receive, not just the first page of the sales paperwork.

Ask the seller for the original warranty booklet or warranty document and, if applicable, the written terms for a certified used-car warranty or another coverage plan. Request any available records that identify when the vehicle was first placed in service or show prior warranty repairs. Those dates and records can help the dealership assess the VIN, but the dealership and applicable warranty terms must establish the actual status. If the seller does not have a document, ask the dealership what document or vehicle record can clarify the coverage rather than treating the missing paperwork as proof either way.

Before you call, gather the VIN, the vehicle’s current odometer reading, the documents the seller supplied, and any information available about the vehicle’s in-service date. Having these together makes it easier to ask whether a time limit, mileage limit, or specific record affects the answer. Do not assume that a vehicle’s model year alone tells you when coverage began or when it ends; ask the dealership which date and mileage information it used for its VIN-specific determination.
Read the final Buyers Guide carefully
When a dealer sells a used car, the Buyers Guide is an important disclosure form. Check the version attached to the car or sale paperwork, and make sure you have the final version reflecting the terms agreed with the dealer. Look for whether the car is sold “as is,” whether the dealer offers a warranty, and whether the form discloses that the manufacturer’s warranty or a manufacturer’s used-vehicle warranty applies.
The FTC form describes a manufacturer-warranty disclosure this way: “MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY STILL APPLIES. The manufacturer’s original warranty has not expired on some components of the vehicle.” That wording is a disclosure category on the form—not a VIN-specific confirmation that a particular vehicle is eligible for repairs. The form also distinguishes dealer warranties from non-dealer warranties. FTC Used Car Buyers Guide
Read the form as a dealer disclosure, then use the warranty document and the dealership’s VIN check to establish detailed terms. “Manufacturer’s warranty still applies” does not mean every part of the car is covered, or that every repair will qualify. The FTC form itself says the original warranty has not expired on some components; the separate warranty terms identify coverage, exclusions, limits, and conditions. Ask for details about each applicable protection instead of interpreting the check box as an all-purpose promise.
“As is” on the Buyers Guide concerns the dealer’s warranty disclosure. It is not proof that the manufacturer’s warranty has ended, nor proof that it remains. Check manufacturer coverage separately with the dealership and the written warranty terms. Conversely, seeing a manufacturer-warranty disclosure does not establish that the dealer is also providing a warranty. Identify who is responsible for each type of coverage.
The FTC says the final Buyers Guide must reflect negotiated terms and that it overrides contrary provisions in the sales contract. Keep a copy. The FTC Used Car Rule applies in all states except Maine and Wisconsin, which have similar disclosure regulations, and also applies in specified U.S. territories. FTC Dealer’s Guide to the Used Car Rule
If you negotiate a change to what the dealer disclosed, check that the final Buyers Guide reflects the agreement and retain that version. Do not rely only on an earlier copy or on a conversation. The FTC Buyers Guide warns: “IMPORTANT: Spoken promises are difficult to enforce. Ask the dealer to put all promises in writing. Keep this form.” The form is useful evidence of the dealer’s disclosure, but it is not a replacement for the detailed warranty document.

Call a dealership for the car’s make and ask for a VIN-specific answer
Contact a dealership that handles the vehicle’s make and ask for its service or warranty department. Provide the VIN and request a check of the car’s current coverage. A general answer about a model year, a seller’s recollection, or an online history report is not a substitute for confirmation tied to the individual vehicle. The goal is to leave with an answer for this VIN, not a general description of what is usually covered on similar cars.
Work through these questions and record the answers for each separate coverage:
- Identify the coverage. Ask whether any remaining protection is the original new-car warranty, a manufacturer used-vehicle or certified used-car warranty, a selling-dealer warranty, or a separate service contract. If the representative names more than one, ask which company or party provides each one.
- Ask what it covers. Request the covered components or systems, and ask whether coverage differs by component. A general statement that a car is “under warranty” does not tell you which repairs may qualify.
- Get the limits. Ask for the expiration date and mileage limit for each applicable coverage. If the answer depends on a start date or vehicle record, ask what date or record the dealership used. Record the odometer reading as well as any stated mileage cap so you can compare the two.
- Ask about restrictions. Confirm exclusions, any deductible, transfer or eligibility conditions, and whether paperwork or other steps are required before a repair. Ask for the relevant written terms if an answer depends on a condition.
- Clarify how to use it. Ask who is responsible for repairs, which repair facilities are authorized, and what the owner must provide when requesting covered work. If repairs must follow a particular process, find out what that process is before you need to make a claim.
- Keep the response. Ask for the confirmation in writing or make a dated note of the department, representative, and details. If the seller has made a promise about coverage, have it written into the relevant sale paperwork.
It is useful to ask the dealership to distinguish the coverage provider, covered components, time and mileage limits, exclusions, deductible, repair process, and any transfer or paperwork conditions. These are separate questions: a coverage period may still be open while a particular component or repair is excluded, and eligibility can depend on conditions in the specific warranty. If the representative cannot answer one of them, ask where you can obtain the controlling written terms.
The FTC advises shoppers to call the dealership about an unexpired manufacturer warranty and to keep written records of promises. The official Buyers Guide cautions: “IMPORTANT: Spoken promises are difficult to enforce. Ask the dealer to put all promises in writing. Keep this form.” When a seller’s statement and a dealership’s answer differ, ask for an explanation in writing and compare it with the documents before you buy or authorize work.

Compare each protection separately
A used car can have more than one kind of protection, and the terms may differ. Do not treat “under warranty” as a single yes-or-no answer until you know who provides each protection and what it actually covers. A manufacturer warranty, a dealer warranty, a certified used-car warranty, and a paid service contract are not interchangeable labels.
| Protection | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Original manufacturer warranty | Ask whether any original coverage remains for this VIN, which components it covers, and its date and mileage limits. Do not assume transferability; have the dealership confirm eligibility under the vehicle’s terms. |
| Manufacturer used-vehicle or certified used-car warranty | Get the specific warranty document and confirm covered components, term, mileage limits, exclusions, deductible if any, and any eligibility or paperwork conditions. |
| Selling-dealer warranty | Review the Buyers Guide and written warranty terms for the dealer’s obligations, the coverage period, covered items, exclusions, and repair process. |
| Third-party service contract | Review the contract’s provider, covered items, term, deductible, exclusions, authorized repair process, and whether it duplicates coverage already in force. |
For every protection, note the provider and the source of the terms. Check whether the stated end point is a calendar date, an odometer limit, or both, and whether the coverage has component-specific limits. Then note exclusions, a deductible if one applies, the repair process, and any transfer or paperwork requirements. This comparison prevents a broad sales description from hiding that different protections cover different systems or end at different times.
The FTC distinguishes service contracts from warranties and recommends checking whether a service contract duplicates existing coverage. If a seller calls a paid plan an “extended warranty,” read the contract itself: the FTC describes such a plan as a service contract rather than a warranty. Review its scope, term, deductible, exclusions, provider, and repair requirements, and compare them with coverage already confirmed for the vehicle. Do not count a service contract as proof that factory coverage remains, or assume that an active factory warranty makes every additional contract useful. They are distinct protections with their own terms. The question is not simply whether another plan is available, but what it covers, who must provide repairs, and whether it duplicates protection already in force.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does a factory warranty transfer to a second owner?
Do not rely on a universal transfer rule. The FTC’s general consumer guidance does not establish that every manufacturer warranty transfers to every subsequent owner. Transferability, eligibility, start date, and exclusions depend on the specific warranty and vehicle. Ask the dealership to confirm the VIN’s status and review the actual warranty document for conditions that apply to a later owner.
If the seller says coverage transfers automatically, ask for the written basis for that claim and have the manufacturer’s dealership confirm it. If the answer depends on a registration, ownership, or other record, ask which step must be completed and who must complete it before a repair is requested. A prior owner’s statement or paperwork can be useful to discuss with the dealership, but it does not replace confirmation of this vehicle’s eligibility.
When asking whether the factory warranty transfers, ask the dealership to separate that question from whether coverage is still within its time and mileage limits. A warranty may have a remaining term yet still require confirmation of eligibility or paperwork. Conversely, a statement that a warranty is transferable in general does not confirm that a particular used car meets its conditions.
What to do if the paperwork and dealership answer disagree
Pause before buying—or before assuming a repair will be covered—if the Buyers Guide, warranty documents, seller’s statements, and dealership’s VIN check do not agree. Ask the dealership to explain the difference and identify the document or vehicle record supporting its answer. Ask the seller to correct any inaccurate disclosure or put any negotiated promise into the final paperwork.

- Compare the warranty’s start date and limits with the dealership’s stated expiration.
- Separate original manufacturer coverage from dealer coverage and service contracts; one can remain even if another does not.
- Retain the final Buyers Guide, warranty documents, sale contract, and written dealership confirmation.
Check for differences in the date or mileage limit, which components are included, who provides the coverage, and what paperwork is required. If a seller uses “warranty” to describe a separate service contract, ask to see the actual contract and identify its provider. If a salesperson made a promise that is absent from the paperwork, ask for it to be included in writing rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
The FTC says the final Buyers Guide should reflect negotiated terms and overrides contrary provisions in the sales contract. That makes the final form especially important when the dealer has agreed to change a warranty disclosure or other term. Keep the final form and the supporting warranty document together so you can show what the dealer disclosed and what the warranty terms say. FTC Dealer’s Guide to the Used Car Rule

If a discrepancy cannot be resolved before purchase, do not treat the more favorable verbal statement as confirmed coverage. Get the written explanation and the relevant document, then decide based on the terms that can be established for the vehicle. If you are checking after purchase, retain the same records and ask the warranty department to explain what additional documentation or eligibility step is needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep warranty verification separate from other used-car checks
Other checks can help assess a car, but they answer different questions. A vehicle history report may provide useful history; an open-recall lookup can identify recalls; and an independent mechanical inspection can assess condition. None of those establishes whether the manufacturer will authorize a warranty repair. Likewise, an inspection does not determine coverage terms, and a warranty does not show that a car is mechanically sound.
The FTC recommends considering vehicle history, recalls, and an independent inspection as part of evaluating a used car, while separately advising buyers to contact a dealership about an unexpired manufacturer warranty. Treat each as its own check. FTC: Buying a Used Car From a Dealer
These checks complement, rather than replace, one another. A history report is not a warranty eligibility determination; a recall lookup is not a coverage document; and a mechanical inspection is a condition check, not a promise that a repair will be paid for. If the vehicle passes one check, continue with the others that matter to your purchase. For warranty status specifically, rely on the written terms and a VIN-specific answer from a dealership for the make.
Before you commit, save a written coverage record
For a useful record, keep the final Buyers Guide, warranty booklet or contract, and the dealership’s VIN-specific confirmation together. Make sure the record states the provider, covered components, date and mileage limits, exclusions or deductible, repair process, and any paperwork or eligibility conditions that apply. If an important sales promise is verbal, ask for it in writing before the sale is final.
Keep records in a form you can refer to later, and note when you asked the dealership and which department gave the answer. If a later question arises, you can compare the confirmation with the actual warranty terms and the final disclosure. Do not discard a document simply because another protection appears to be active; each may come from a different provider and have different conditions.
The result you need is not just “yes, it has a warranty.” It is a documented answer for this specific vehicle that tells you which protection remains, what it covers, when it ends, and how to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if a used car is still under warranty?
Match the VIN on the car to the paperwork, review the final Buyers Guide and warranty documents, then call a dealership for the car’s make. Ask it to confirm the coverage for that VIN, including covered components, expiration by date or mileage, exclusions, and any paperwork needed for repairs. Keep the answer in writing.
Can I check a car warranty by VIN?
A VIN is the key information to give the dealership when asking it to check manufacturer coverage. A dealership’s VIN-specific answer and the actual warranty terms are the appropriate sources for current coverage and limits; a history report alone does not establish eligibility.
Does the factory warranty transfer to a second owner?
There is no universal transfer rule established by the FTC’s general guidance. Transferability and eligibility depend on the specific vehicle and warranty. Ask a dealership for the make to confirm the VIN’s status and check the warranty document for conditions that apply to a later owner.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What does “manufacturer’s warranty still applies” mean on the Buyers Guide?
It is a disclosure category stating that the manufacturer’s original warranty has not expired on some components. It does not confirm that a particular VIN is eligible for a repair or that every component is covered. Verify the details with the warranty document and a dealership.
Does “as is” mean the car has no factory warranty?
No. “As is” on the Buyers Guide concerns the dealer’s warranty disclosure. It does not prove whether manufacturer coverage has ended or remains active. Check manufacturer coverage separately using the warranty terms and a VIN-specific dealership confirmation.
Is an extended warranty the same as a factory warranty?
Not necessarily. The FTC describes a paid extended-warranty plan as a service contract rather than a warranty. Review its provider, scope, term, deductible, exclusions, repair process, and whether it duplicates coverage already in force.
The Bottom Line
Use the VIN to get a dealership’s vehicle-specific answer, then compare it with the final Buyers Guide and actual warranty documents. Confirm each provider, covered components, date and mileage limits, exclusions, and repair requirements in writing. Neither “as is” nor a history report settles whether factory coverage remains.
