What a “competitive” petrol price actually means
A competitive price is one that compares favourably with nearby alternatives for the same fuel grade at roughly the same time, while still being practical for your journey. It is a local, time-sensitive judgement rather than a permanent label attached to a forecourt.

- Price: the amount shown per litre for unleaded, diesel or the specific premium grade you need.
- Freshness: when that station last submitted or displayed the price.
- Location: whether the station is near home, work or a route you are already taking.
- Practicality: opening hours and useful facilities for your trip.
- Scale: whether the saving is large enough to justify extra distance, time or a special journey.
The Competition and Markets Authority summarised the consumer principle this way: “Effective competition relies on consumers being able to accurately compare the price and quality of products in a way that drives good decisions.” For fuel, accurate comparison starts with like-for-like grade and current station-level data.

Start with the UK Government’s Fuel Finder data
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Fuel Finder provides station-level retail prices by fuel type, along with the forecourt address, operator, brand, amenities, opening hours and an update timestamp. The government says price changes are published within 30 minutes. Participating websites and apps display that feed, so the timestamp is essential when deciding whether a number is still useful.

Fuel Finder is a data scheme, not a guarantee that every consumer app refreshes at exactly the same moment. A service may add its own caching, map or notification delay. Treat the displayed time as evidence of freshness, not a promise that the pump price will remain unchanged until you arrive.
As of the Department’s driver factsheet dated 31 March 2026, around 90% of UK filling stations had signed up. The department said remaining stations were required to start sharing prices and that drivers could report mismatches. Because that percentage is tied to that date, do not interpret it as the current coverage rate without a newer statement.
A seven-step check you can repeat before filling up
1. Select the exact fuel grade
Choose the grade your vehicle requires before comparing prices. Ordinary unleaded and diesel are not interchangeable, and a premium or higher-octane product should not be compared with the standard grade simply because it is sold at the same site. Fuel Finder supplies prices by fuel type; use the same selection for every station in your shortlist.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your vehicle handbook permits more than one grade, decide which one you are actually buying for this trip. A cheaper standard price is irrelevant if you intend to purchase premium fuel.
2. Define a realistic search area
Search around your home, workplace or existing route. Navigation services and local comparison tools can show stations near a route, which is more useful than ranking every station in a wide radius. A station several miles away may have a lower pump price but still cost more once you add the detour.
For a planned journey, check the stations in the direction you will travel and note whether the comparison service is using your route or merely drawing a circle around your current location. For a routine fill, a small local shortlist is usually more meaningful than a city-wide “cheapest” result.
3. Compare several prices and their timestamps
Record at least three practical alternatives when the data is available. For each one, note the price per litre and the displayed update time. A station at £1.519 with a timestamp from this morning may be a stronger candidate than one at £1.499 whose listing has not visibly updated for several days.

It is also very quick to remove, there is a small bump on the coaster, pinch it and you can easily remove the coaster. - 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
Do not create a universal “competitive” threshold such as “within five pence.” The reviewed official sources do not establish a current local difference that works everywhere. Compare the actual spread among stations you could use on this journey.
4. Check route fit and forecourt details
Open the station record rather than relying only on a pin or headline price. Confirm the address, opening hours and any amenities that matter to you. A cheaper site that is closed when you need it, or requires leaving and rejoining a motorway route, may not be the practical winner.
Record the additional distance or estimated detour. If two prices are close, the station already on your route normally deserves priority because it avoids a separate trip whose cost can erase the saving.
5. Convert the price difference into your likely saving
Multiply the per-litre difference by the number of litres you expect to buy. Label the volume as your assumption; it is not a typical-fill statistic.
| Station | Grade | Price per litre | Displayed update | Route fit | Opening information |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | Unleaded | £1.489 | 10:05 today | On route | Open when needed |
| Example B | Unleaded | £1.519 | 09:42 today | Two-mile detour | Open when needed |
| Example C | Unleaded | £1.507 | Yesterday | On route | Hours not suitable |
In this illustration, Example A is 3 pence per litre cheaper than Example B. Assuming a 45-litre purchase, the gross difference is £1.35 (0.03 × 45). That calculation excludes the fuel and time cost of the detour, so it does not by itself prove that the cheaper station is the better choice.
6. Use a national average only as context
The official UK weekly series for average unleaded petrol and diesel prices can show whether the market is generally rising or falling. Its directory entry was updated on 13 October 2026 and contains data through 12 October 2026. It is a national, weekly series, not a live quote for your nearest forecourt.
For example, a station can be below the national weekly average but still be the most expensive option in your town. Conversely, a local station above the national figure may be competitive against every nearby alternative. Use the national number to understand broad conditions, then make the purchase decision with station-level prices.

7. Verify a discrepancy and report it
Prices can change after submission, and an app can display an older value. If the forecourt price does not match the listing, check that you selected the correct grade and note the station, displayed price, pump price and timestamps. The government’s driver factsheet provides a route for reporting a mismatch to the government service. A report is more useful when it includes the exact location and the time you observed the difference.
Which comparison service should you use?
The 31 March 2026 government factsheet names Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, Google Maps, MoneyHelper, MoneySuperMarket, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com, Petrol Savings, RAC Fuel Watch and Waze as examples where Fuel Finder data is available. Listing them does not constitute government endorsement, and some developers were still integrating the feed.
Choose a service by checking the features that affect the decision, rather than assuming one app is universally best:
| Comparison feature | Why it matters | What to verify on screen |
|---|---|---|
| Local coverage | A low price is useful only if stations in your area report data. | Several nearby sites appear, not just one national result. |
| Exact fuel grade | Prevents an invalid like-for-unlike comparison. | The grade is labelled for every price. |
| Visible timestamp | Shows how recently the displayed number was updated. | A date and time are shown beside each station or price. |
| Route search | Highlights stations you can reach without a costly detour. | You can search along a planned route or navigation path. |
| Practical details | Opening hours and amenities can determine whether a station works for your trip. | The station record includes those fields. |
| Alerts or trends | Useful for planning, but not a substitute for the current timestamp. | The service explains when notifications and trend data refresh. |
If a service shows no timestamp, treat its price as less certain and cross-check it in another service or at the forecourt. Do not infer that a map pin is current merely because the station appears on the map.
Understand how fresh the data really is
Government publication timing
Fuel Finder says price changes are published within 30 minutes. That describes the government feed’s publication target. It does not mean every app, website or navigation screen updates within 30 minutes of a pump change. Each intermediary can have a different refresh schedule.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Download and API distribution
The Fuel Finder downloadable CSV is updated twice daily. API access is also available and requires authentication. These are separate distribution mechanisms; a consumer app using the API should not be assumed to follow the CSV timetable, and an app using a cached file may lag both.
Coverage is improving but not necessarily complete
The approximately 90% participation figure in the March 2026 factsheet indicates substantial coverage at that point, while also confirming that some stations were still outstanding. If a familiar station is missing or has no recent price, compare the stations that do report and use the forecourt’s own sign as the final check.

Account for the cost of a detour
The relevant question is not “Which station has the lowest number?” but “Which option leaves me better off after reaching it?” Use this calculation:
Fuel saving = (your current option’s price − alternative price) × litres purchased.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThen estimate the detour cost from your own vehicle’s fuel consumption and the current price. Include both extra distance and, when it matters, the value of additional travel time. If the saving is smaller than the detour cost, the cheaper pump price is not a real saving.
Example: a 4-pence-per-litre difference saves £1.80 on an assumed 45-litre purchase. If reaching the cheaper station adds a journey whose fuel costs £2, the detour has already exceeded the gross price saving. The numbers are illustrative; substitute your vehicle’s consumption, route and planned litres.
A small difference can still be worthwhile when the station is already on your route. A larger difference may not justify a special trip if you need only a few litres. Make the calculation for the amount you will actually buy, not an assumed full tank when you are only topping up.

Fuel Finder records opening hours and amenities because price is only one part of a usable stop. Check the hours against your arrival time, especially for an early departure, late return or holiday journey. If you need a particular payment method, air, a shop or another listed facility, confirm that it is available at the station you select.

Regional differences: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Fuel Finder is a UK-wide government scheme, but availability and comparison tools can vary by area. The Competition and Markets Authority’s 2023 road-fuel review described Northern Ireland’s Consumer Council checker, which reports town-level high, low and average prices weekly. That weekly town view is useful context, but it is not a substitute for a current station-level timestamp.
The CMA review predates the current Fuel Finder rollout. Its description of older comparison websites and navigation services explains why datasets can have gaps or infrequent updates; it should not be read as an audit of today’s apps. Check what your chosen service displays in your own area.
Queensland has a separate state fuel-price reporting scheme with its own listed apps and websites, including features such as real-time prices, price-drop notifications and trends. The Queensland Government explicitly says it is not associated with or endorsing those services. A UK comparison list therefore should not be assumed to work internationally; use the reporting scheme for the jurisdiction where you are buying fuel.
What to do when services disagree
The prices differ between two apps
Compare the timestamps first, then confirm the fuel grade and station address. If one service is older, use the newer entry provisionally. If both appear current, treat the disagreement as uncertainty and check the forecourt or another source before making a special detour.
The station has no timestamp
Do not rank an undated price as though it were current. Look for the same station in a service that exposes update time, or use it only as a rough lead while travelling on your existing route.
The listing is lower than the pump
Photograph or record the displayed listing and the pump price, including the time and grade. Check for a different fuel selection or forecourt address, then submit the discrepancy through the government reporting route identified in the driver factsheet.
No nearby station reports a price
Use the available station details and signs, but recognise that you cannot establish a reliable local ranking from missing data. Avoid claiming that an unlisted station is cheapest merely because it has no comparison entry.

How much could regular comparison save?
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimated an average annual saving of £40 for car-owning households in its 31 March 2026 factsheet. That is a government estimate across households, not a guaranteed saving for an individual driver. Your result depends on annual mileage, fuel use, local price differences, how often you compare and whether a lower-priced station is already on your route.
To estimate your own result, keep a simple record of the price you would otherwise have paid, the selected price and litres purchased. Add the differences over time, while subtracting any extra travel cost. Do not count a saving that required a detour costing more than the pump-price difference.
A practical checklist before you drive away
- Is the comparison set to the fuel grade you will buy?
- Are at least two or three realistic nearby stations shown?
- Does every shortlisted price have a visible date and time?
- Is the station on your route, or have you priced the detour?
- Will it be open when you arrive?
- Does it provide any facility you specifically need?
- Have you calculated the saving using your actual planned litres?
- If the pump price differs, have you recorded the details for a report?
Bottom line
A petrol station is competitive when its current, like-for-like price beats practical nearby alternatives after you account for route, detour, opening hours and required facilities. Use a service that exposes Fuel Finder prices and timestamps, use the national weekly average only for broad context, and treat every listing as time-sensitive. No single app or fixed pence-per-litre rule can decide the question for every driver; the reliable method is a small, timestamped local comparison matched to the journey you are actually making.
