Check length, overall body width and height against the entrance and the space inside, but also check mirrors, roof equipment, obstacles, the turning route and room to open doors. “Mahindra SUV” is not one size: a three-door Thar, Thar ROXX, Scorpio-N, XUV700 and XUV 7XO have materially different dimensions. A nominal length, width and height comparison alone cannot guarantee that you can enter, park or use the space safely.
What you need to establish before measuring
Start with the vehicle you would actually drive into the space, not a generic model name. Record the following:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Model and model year.
- Exact variant and market (country specification can differ).
- Roof configuration, including roof rails or other factory equipment.
- Accessories fitted to the vehicle, such as side steps, tow equipment, roof boxes or aftermarket rails.
- Whether the published dimensions include roof equipment and what the manufacturer means by “width.”
Save the official specification or brochure for that exact configuration. If you are comparing a vehicle you have not yet bought, ask an authorised Mahindra dealer to confirm the dimensions for the VIN, variant and market. Do not substitute a figure from a different model year simply because the badge is the same.
Published Mahindra dimensions: examples, not a universal size
The figures below illustrate why the model and variant matter. They are selected manufacturer figures, not a complete list of every Mahindra SUV or a guarantee for every market, model year, accessory or mirror position.

These values are useful for a first comparison, but the published overall width is not automatically a mirror-to-mirror measurement. The cited specifications do not provide one mirror-width value that can safely be applied to every variant. If a mirror, doorway or wall is close, obtain the exact vehicle measurement or measure the actual vehicle.
Measure the entrance, not just the garage plan
The narrowest point you must pass through is often the limiting dimension. A building plan may show a generous opening while the usable gap is smaller because of hardware or the way you approach it.
1. Measure clear opening width
With the door in the position used for entry, measure between the nearest obstructions at the narrowest height and location. Include door tracks, pillars, hinges, handles, weather seals, posts, kerbs and anything hanging into the opening. Measure both sides and at several heights if the opening tapers or has a sloping frame. Record the smallest clear width, not the nominal door size.
If you normally enter with the mirrors unfolded, treat the mirror-to-mirror span as the relevant passage dimension. If you intend to fold them, verify that they can be folded before reaching the obstruction and that doing so does not remove your ability to see the route. Folded mirrors reduce the protruding span in some situations; they do not reduce the SUV’s body width and do not make an uncertain route safe.

2. Measure clear height
Measure from the driving surface to the lowest overhead obstruction at the entrance and along the route. Check the bottom edge of a raised garage door, opener arm, tracks, beams, lighting, pipes, storage racks and any change in floor level. A door that is fully open at the back of the garage can still hang lower at the entrance. Use the lowest measured point as the height limit.
3. Measure the approach
Measure the lane, ramp, gate or turn before the vehicle reaches the opening. Note walls, parked cars, boundary posts, drainage channels and the angle at which the SUV must turn. A vehicle can be shorter and narrower than the room yet fail to line up with the opening because the approach does not provide enough turning room.
Measure usable space inside the garage or bay
Interior width
Measure wall-to-wall at bumper height, mirror height and door-handle height. The smallest usable width controls entry and daily use. Subtract space occupied by shelving, cabinets, stored bicycles, water heaters, posts, pipes, steps and any item that cannot be moved. A nominal construction dimension is not usable parking width.

Measure from the inside of the closed door or the far wall to the nearest obstruction. Account for a front bumper, rear bumper, tow equipment and the amount of space needed to walk around the vehicle. If the space ends at a wall, mark the intended stopping position and check that the tailgate or rear door can open without striking it.

Side and door access
Decide how occupants will get in and out. Measure the gap beside the driver’s door and any required passenger door. A vehicle may fit with its mirrors a few millimetres from the wall but leave no practical way to open a door, buckle a child into a seat or carry bags around the vehicle. Also check whether a tailgate, bonnet or second-row door can be opened where you park.
Compare dimensions correctly
Make a simple comparison sheet using the smallest measured clearances:
| Check | Space measurement to use | Vehicle value to compare | What a close result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry width | Narrowest clear opening, including hardware | Exact vehicle body width plus the actual mirror/accessory span | Obtain an exact vehicle measurement and perform an in-person check. |
| Interior width | Narrowest usable wall-to-wall distance after obstacles | Body width, then door and walking space | The SUV may park but be impractical to use. |
| Depth | Usable floor length after shelves and stored items | Vehicle length plus space for doors, tailgate and walking | Check door and tailgate operation, not only bumper-to-wall distance. |
| Overhead clearance | Lowest point on the complete route | Exact height with roof rails, roof box or other equipment | Any uncertain point requires a physical verification; do not rely on a camera. |
Do not invent a universal “safe extra” number. The useful margin depends on whether you need to walk beside the vehicle, open doors, protect mirrors, use a ramp or negotiate a turn. State the measured difference and what you need to do in the space rather than applying a generic clearance rule.
Why length, width and height alone can give the wrong answer
Mirrors and accessories
Overall width in a brochure may describe the body at a specified point, not the widest mirror-to-mirror span. Mirrors, side steps, mud flaps, roof rails, roof boxes, bull bars and tow equipment can alter the practical envelope. Ask Mahindra for the exact configuration when a wall or gate is close. Measure accessories that are already fitted; do not assume a factory accessory has the same dimensions as the standard vehicle.

Turning path and approach angle
Wheelbase is not a turning-clearance specification. The Thar ROXX, for example, is listed with a 2,850 mm wheelbase, while the XUV700 and XUV 7XO examples list 2,750 mm, but those numbers alone do not tell you whether either vehicle can swing through your gate. Steering lock, front and rear overhangs, the approach angle and the width of the lane all affect the path. Use cones or removable markers to trace the route and have a spotter watch each corner.
Floor, ramp and door geometry
A sloped driveway changes the vehicle’s height relative to a lintel and can make a bumper or underbody contact a ramp. A roller door may occupy more overhead space while moving than when fully raised. Check every position in which the vehicle and door coexist, not just the final parked position.
A practical measuring procedure
- Write down the vehicle identity. Record model, year, variant, market, wheel or roof configuration and fitted accessories.
- Collect the official figures. Use the current Mahindra page, brochure or dealer confirmation for length, body width and height. Note whether height includes roof rails.
- Map the route. Sketch the street or driveway, gate, turn, ramp and garage. Mark fixed obstacles and the intended stopping point.
- Measure the entrance. Take several width readings and keep the smallest clear value. Include tracks, pillars, handles, seals and posts.
- Measure the height route. Check the lowest overhead point with the door in the required position, including opener hardware, beams, lights and pipes.
- Measure the interior. Record usable width and depth after subtracting shelves, stored items and other obstructions.
- Check operating space. Mark where each door, tailgate and bonnet opens. Decide where people will stand and how items will be carried.
- Compare like with like. Compare the measured opening with the exact vehicle and its actual mirror/accessory envelope, not merely the brochure body width.
- Test a close route safely. Use a spotter, slow speed and removable markers. Stop if visibility, turning room or clearance is uncertain.
- Document the result. Keep the measurements, vehicle specification date and photos. Recheck after installing shelves, a new door opener or accessories.
Worked comparison: what the example figures tell you
The three-door Thar example is 3,985 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and 1,844 mm high. The Thar ROXX example is 443 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 79 mm taller than those listed Thar figures. That difference can change whether a narrow gate can be cleared, whether a tailgate reaches a wall and whether a low beam is passable.
The Scorpio-N example is 4,662 mm long and 1,917 mm wide, with height listed as 1,849 mm for R17 and 1,857 mm for the cited top-variant specification. The XUV700 and XUV 7XO examples are 4,695 mm long and 1,890 mm wide, with 1,755 mm height when equipped with roof rails. These comparisons show why you must use the exact variant: the widest model is not necessarily the tallest, and a variant-specific height can matter at a low lintel.

None of these comparisons answers whether your space works. You still have to compare the relevant figure with the narrowest opening, the lowest obstruction and the room needed to manoeuvre and use the parked vehicle.
Parking cameras, sensors and folded mirrors: what they can and cannot do
Mahindra’s XUV700 owner’s manual states: “It is the driver’s responsibility to identify a suitable parking area and park the vehicle safely.” The manual describes parking overlays and obstacle sensing as assistance, not as a substitute for checking the space and surrounding obstacles. Camera guidelines can be affected by angle, dirt, lighting and objects outside the sensor field.
Exterior mirrors can be folded to avoid hindrances in narrow areas. Folding may help at a passage that is wide enough for the body, but it does not change body width, solve a turning problem or prove that the route is safe. If you cannot see both sides or the clearance is uncertain, stop and use a trained spotter or choose another space.

Arrange an exact-vehicle fit check
Take your measurement sheet, photos and a sketch to an authorised Mahindra dealer. Ask for the exact model year, variant, roof equipment and mirror configuration to be verified, and request an in-person drive-in or fit check where available. Dealer confirmation is especially useful when the published specification does not state mirror width or when accessories are involved.
Use a physical mock-up
Mark the measured body envelope on the ground with tape or cones and rehearse the approach with a spotter. A mock-up cannot reproduce suspension movement or every body contour, so it is a screening method, not a guarantee. Never use a person as a clearance marker.
Resolve the obstruction instead of guessing
If the issue is a shelf, stored item, post or door hardware, measure again after it is removed or repositioned. Do not rely on scraping past an obstruction, driving with a mirror folded when you need visibility, or accepting a route that leaves no way to open a door.
Decision checklist
- Is the model year, variant and market confirmed?
- Are the dimensions from the exact vehicle configuration, including roof rails and accessories?
- Have you measured the narrowest entrance rather than the nominal door size?
- Have you checked mirror and accessory width separately from published body width?
- Is the lowest overhead point measured with the door and opener in their real positions?
- Are interior shelves, pipes, posts, stored items and kerbs included?
- Can the SUV turn into the space without relying on an unobserved corner?
- Can occupants open the required doors, walk around the vehicle and reach stored items?
- Have you checked tailgate and bonnet operation at the stopping position?
- If any measurement is close, has an authorised dealer or an in-person fit check verified it?
If any answer is no, the fit is not established. Gather the missing measurement or choose a space with more usable clearance rather than treating a nominal dimension as proof.
