There is no universal “bespoke-option” rule. Coverage depends on the exact vehicle, option, supplier, installer, failure, warranty wording and country. Check the written warranty and option paperwork, then obtain a written answer from the manufacturer or dealer responsible for the claim. Ask two separate questions: whether the option itself is covered, and whether the warranty could exclude another repair because the option allegedly caused the damage.
The process below works for a factory special-order feature, a dealer-installed accessory, a custom conversion or an aftermarket part. It also separates the manufacturer’s warranty from a separately sold service contract, which is a different agreement.

Why the word “bespoke” does not settle coverage
“Bespoke” describes how an item was selected or installed, not who accepted warranty responsibility. A manufacturer-installed option may be covered under the vehicle’s basic or component warranty. A dealer-fitted item may have the dealer’s installation warranty, the supplier’s warranty, or limited coverage under the vehicle warranty. An aftermarket accessory may be covered by its own maker while the vehicle warranty continues to apply to unrelated systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCoverage also turns on the failure being claimed. The same option might be covered when its switch fails, but not when collision damage, incorrect installation, neglect or an unrelated powertrain fault is involved. Read the contract’s covered components, exclusions and causation language rather than relying on a sales description or the assumption that every claim is either fully covered or fully void.

Country matters. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance cited here is for the United States. Canada’s federal consumer information office advises contacting the dealer when you are unsure whether a new-car problem is covered; provincial or territorial rules can add protections. The warranty booklet and local law for the vehicle’s country of sale control the actual claim.
1. Identify the car and the exact option
Start a record before contacting anyone. Use the same identifiers in every email, web form and service visit so the answer relates to the correct vehicle and part.
- Vehicle: VIN, model, model year, trim, date of first delivery and current mileage.
- Option: the exact name shown on the build sheet or invoice, a plain-language description, part number and software or hardware version if applicable.
- Route to the car: factory-installed, port-installed, dealer-installed, conversion-company installed or fitted by an independent shop.
- People and businesses: manufacturer, selling dealer, installer and option supplier.
- Timing: order date, installation date, delivery date and when the problem appeared.
- Problem: the symptom, warning message, affected system and any repair diagnosis. Do not describe a suspected cause as a proven fact.
Photograph the option, its labels and the defect when that can be done safely. Do not remove a component or alter wiring merely to investigate; an altered condition can make diagnosis harder and may create a separate dispute about installation.

Collect copies, not just links to an online portal. The FTC says warranty terms must be available for you to read before you buy and recommends keeping the warranty and purchase receipt. See FTC: Warranties.

- Option invoice, part number, installation order and installer’s invoice.
- Separate option or accessory warranty, if supplied.
- Service-contract certificate or schedule, if an “extended warranty” was purchased.
- Maintenance and repair records, diagnostic reports, photographs and prior written approvals.
For a used vehicle, ask the dealer for the warranty documents and verify coverage, expiration by time or mileage and the records associated with the VIN. The FTC’s checklist is at FTC: Buying a Used Car From a Dealer. A used-car sale can involve remaining factory coverage, a dealer warranty, an “as-is” term or a service contract; identify which document you are relying on.
3. Find the clauses that decide the claim
Read the pages that apply to the failed component, not only the front-page duration. Make a note of the exact heading and page number for each relevant term.
| Warranty provision | What to check for the bespoke option |
|---|---|
| Duration and mileage | Start date, months or years, mileage ceiling and whether the option has a shorter separate period. |
| Covered parts and systems | Whether the option, its controller, wiring, mounting hardware, labor and diagnostic time are listed or incorporated by reference. |
| Exclusions | Aftermarket equipment, modifications, accessories, competition use, water or impact damage, misuse, maintenance and unauthorized repairs. |
| Installation conditions | Required installer, approved parts, programming, calibration or documentation; terms that shift responsibility to an installer or supplier. |
| Causation language | Whether a denial requires the option or its installation to have caused the damage, or whether a narrower exclusion applies. |
| Claim procedure | Authorized repairer, prior authorization, inspection, notice deadlines, diagnostic steps and appeal or customer-care route. |
| Payment terms | Deductible, labor-rate limits, towing, removal and reinstallation costs, taxes and whether diagnosis is paid when the claim is declined. |
A clause may cover an original-equipment option but exclude a later modification that performs a similar function. Conversely, an exclusion may apply only to the altered circuit or damage caused by it. Record the wording instead of paraphrasing it in a way that broadens the exclusion.

Factory-installed or factory-authorized option
If the option appears on the manufacturer’s build record and was installed in the production process, ask the manufacturer to identify the warranty section and term for that option. Some components have separate battery, infotainment, paint, corrosion, emissions or accessory schedules. A factory origin does not automatically make every failure eligible; time, mileage, exclusions and the diagnosed cause still apply.

Dealer- or port-installed equipment
Obtain the installation invoice and ask whether the dealer, a port facility or the manufacturer supplied the part. There may be separate commitments for the part and the labor. Ask which party authorizes removal, reinstallation and diagnosis if the item affects a vehicle system.
Aftermarket or custom-conversion equipment
Identify the accessory maker and installer and request their written warranty. Then ask the vehicle manufacturer which vehicle components, if any, are excluded when a failure is alleged to be related to that equipment. In US FTC guidance, an aftermarket part does not by itself cancel the entire vehicle warranty. The FTC states: “The manufacturer or dealer must prove the aftermarket or recycled part caused the damage before they can deny warranty coverage.” This is US guidance from FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts, not a universal rule for every country or contract.
A denial should therefore identify the failed part, the option or installation feature said to be responsible, the technical evidence and the contract clause relied upon. Ask whether unrelated systems remain covered and whether the option maker or installer should handle the disputed repair.
5. Ask a precise question in writing
Call the service department if you need an immediate appointment, but send the coverage question by email or the manufacturer’s written channel. Include the VIN and attachments, and request a clause-level response.

Subject: Written warranty coverage request — VIN [VIN] — [option and part number]
Vehicle: [model year, model, trim, mileage]
Option: [exact description and part number]
Supplier and installer: [names]
Installation or delivery date: [date]
Symptom and diagnosis: [facts, warning codes and dates]
Please confirm in writing:
1. Is the option itself covered, and under which warranty section and end date or mileage?
2. Is the reported failure covered? If not, which exclusion applies?
3. Does the option affect coverage for any other vehicle system?
4. If a denial is based on causation, what evidence and inspection support that conclusion?
5. Who pays diagnosis, removal, reinstallation and labor if the claim is approved or declined?
6. What authorization or appeal step must I follow before repair?
Ask the dealer or manufacturer to quote or attach the applicable clause. Keep the response, the date, the name and role of the person replying, and any case number. A verbal assurance that “all accessories are excluded” is not specific enough to resolve which component and failure are at issue.
6. Separate a factory warranty from a service contract
An “extended warranty” sold separately is commonly a service contract, not an extension of the manufacturer’s original promise. It has its own provider, eligibility rules, covered repairs, exclusions, term, claim authorization and payment conditions. The FTC explains the distinction at FTC: Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts; the CFPB also describes the difference at manufacturer warranties and service contracts.
| Question | Manufacturer warranty | Separate service contract |
|---|---|---|
| Responsible party | Vehicle manufacturer or its warranty administrator, as named in the booklet. | The contract provider named on the certificate; a dealer may only sell or administer it. |
| When coverage starts | Usually tied to first delivery or in-service date, with component-specific schedules. | The contract’s effective date, waiting period and expiration; it may overlap factory coverage. |
| What is covered | Parts and defects listed in the manufacturer’s terms. | Only the components and repair types promised in that contract, often with eligibility restrictions. |
| Option and modification wording | Manufacturer exclusions and causation rules. | Its own accessory, modification, pre-existing-condition and authorization exclusions. |
| Claim process | Authorized dealer diagnosis and manufacturer procedures. | Provider authorization, approved repair facility, deductible and claim-time conditions. |
| Overlap | May already pay while a service contract is active. | Check coordination, duplicate coverage and who must be contacted first. |
Before buying or relying on a service contract, check its provider, price, deductible, covered repairs, exclusions, cancellation terms, duration and overlap with remaining factory coverage. Do not assume purchasing it cures an exclusion for a bespoke option.

7. Test the likely claim paths
Failure of the option itself
Example: a factory sunroof control fails within its listed time and mileage. Ask for the option’s component schedule, whether the control and labor are covered and whether water intrusion or impact exclusions apply. The result depends on the diagnosis and the written terms, not on the word “special.”

Failure in another system after a dealer installation
Example: an auxiliary electrical accessory is installed by the selling dealer and a body-control module later fails. Request the installation diagram, diagnostic evidence and the clause addressing related damage. The dealer may need to address installation workmanship while the manufacturer assesses the module under its warranty.
Aftermarket part alleged to have caused damage
Example: an aftermarket suspension component is fitted, followed by a complaint about steering wear. Ask for the specific failed part, measurement or inspection supporting causation and the exact exclusion. A blanket statement that the vehicle is “out of warranty” does not identify which coverage is denied.
Unrelated failure
Example: a custom cargo organizer is installed and the air-conditioning compressor fails. Give the manufacturer the organizer details, but ask why that item could affect the compressor. Request a separate diagnosis rather than accepting an unreasoned vehicle-wide denial.

8. Build a claim file and follow the authorization rules
- Save the warranty booklet, purchase contract, build sheet, option invoice, installation records and service-contract schedule in one folder.
- Log mileage, dates, symptoms, warning messages, appointments, case numbers and the names of people contacted.
- Before disassembly or non-emergency repair, ask whether written authorization or inspection is required and whether an independent diagnosis will be reimbursed.
- Provide maintenance records and photographs relevant to the failure; redact unrelated personal information from documents you send.
- If coverage is declined, request the written reason, clause, technical evidence and itemized costs for diagnosis, removal or reinstallation.
- Use the manufacturer’s customer-care or appeal process, then the service-contract provider’s complaint route when the dispute concerns that contract.
Do not authorize a repair on the assumption that reimbursement will follow. Emergency safety repairs may require immediate action, but notify the responsible provider as soon as possible and retain the failed parts, invoices and photographs if permitted.
9. What to do when the answer is unclear or denied
First check whether the reply addressed the same VIN, option, installer and failure you described. Ask the responder to distinguish an exclusion for the option itself from an exclusion for damage allegedly caused by it. Request the inspection report or diagnostic basis, not just a conclusion.
If two parties point at each other, send both the same chronology and documents and ask each to identify its contract, responsible component and next inspection step. A manufacturer warranty, installer warranty and service contract can apply to different portions of one repair; assigning responsibility requires the actual terms and diagnosis.
For a US dispute, keep the FTC and CFPB explanations as general consumer guidance, but do not treat them as a determination that your claim must be paid. For a Canadian vehicle, contact the dealer and check the province or territory’s consumer-protection rules. If the financial stakes are significant, a local consumer-law professional can interpret the contract and applicable law.
