Check a used Chery in layers: first match its VIN to the registration and seller documents, then run the official campaign lookup for the car’s market, verify service records and warranty with an authorised Chery dealer, and pay for an independent inspection. Each check answers a different question. A clean campaign result does not prove complete maintenance, accident or ownership history.
Use the sequence below before paying a deposit. If the VIN is inconsistent, records stop at an unexplained mileage gap, or the seller refuses dealer verification or an inspection, pause the purchase.

What a used-Chery history check can—and cannot—prove
Vehicle history evidence comes from different sources, so assess each item by what it actually establishes:
- VIN or plate campaign lookup: identifies listed safety campaigns or product updates attached to that vehicle in a particular country. It is not a complete vehicle-history report.
- Service book, invoices and work orders: show maintenance or repairs that were documented. They are strongest when they identify the vehicle, date, mileage and work performed.
- Dealer confirmation: can verify records held in the authorised Chery network and explain local warranty rules.
- Independent inspection: assesses the car’s present mechanical, structural and cosmetic condition. It does not independently prove ownership, accident or service history.
Compare every record by source, VIN identity, date, mileage continuity, country of sale and scope. A seller’s verbal summary or a clean campaign lookup is weaker evidence than contemporaneous documents confirmed by a dealer and supported by a physical inspection.

1. Match the car’s identity before checking anything else
Write down the 17-character VIN exactly as shown on the vehicle, then compare it character by character with the registration document, purchase paperwork and any service records. Do not rely on a photograph supplied by the seller; read the identifier on the car yourself in good light.
Where the VIN may be found
Chery Malaysia identifies several possible locations: the dashboard visible through the windscreen, under the hood, on a rear door and beneath the driver’s seat. Chery Colombia also identifies the registration card, manufacturer plate and lower windscreen. Exact locations vary by model and market, so use the owner’s documentation if a label is not obvious.
What to inspect on the identifier
- Characters must be legible, evenly spaced and consistent with the manufacturer’s plate or stamping.
- Look for disturbed fasteners, fresh paint, grinding marks, mismatched fonts or damaged labels around the VIN area.
- Confirm that the registration document and seller’s invoice show the same VIN, model description and registration number.
If any identifier is missing, altered or different from the paperwork, stop. Ask the relevant registration authority or an authorised Chery dealer to resolve the discrepancy before discussing price. Do not accept a promise that the mismatch will be corrected after payment.

2. Check open Chery campaigns in the correct country
Use the official Chery campaign or product-update tool for the vehicle’s relevant market. The available tools are country-specific and do not establish a global database.

These statements apply to the named markets, not automatically to an imported Chery or to every country. Enter the VIN yourself where possible and save a dated screenshot or printout. A “no campaign” result means only that no listed campaign was returned by that market’s system; it does not confirm that scheduled servicing occurred or that an accident-free history exists.
Ask for proof that a campaign was completed
For a positive result, request the authorised centre’s job card, invoice or completion confirmation showing the VIN, repair or update performed, date and mileage. If the seller says the work was done elsewhere, ask the local Chery network to verify whether its records can be recognised. Do not assume that a campaign automatically transfers between countries.
3. Build a documentary service-history timeline
Ask the seller for the original service book plus every available invoice, work order and parts receipt. Chery’s Russian warranty terms specifically require dealer entries in the service book and tell owners to retain receipts, invoices, work orders and other maintenance documents. Those are Russian warranty requirements; the evidential value of the documents is useful elsewhere, but local rules may differ.
Cross-check each entry
- List the date, odometer reading, servicing outlet and work performed from every document.
- Check that the VIN or registration number identifies the same car. A generic receipt with no vehicle identifier is weaker evidence.
- Put the entries in mileage order and calculate the distance between visits. Investigate sudden decreases, long unexplained gaps or handwriting that changes at the same mileage.
- Match major work—such as tyres, brakes, battery, timing components or collision repairs—to invoices and the vehicle’s present condition. Do not infer that a component was replaced merely because the seller says so.
- Ask the issuing dealer or repairer to confirm an unclear invoice using contact details obtained independently, not only a phone number supplied in a message.
Photographed pages can be useful for an initial review, but inspect originals before committing funds. Missing records do not prove neglect; they do reduce the evidence available to you and should affect your price and risk decision.

Use the right schedule for the exact car
Maintenance intervals depend on model, engine or other powertrain, model year and country. Use the service book for that vehicle rather than a generic internet interval. Chery Russia’s terms applying after 15 July 2025 state a maximum interval of 10,000 km or 365 days, whichever comes first. That figure is tied to those Russian terms and must not be treated as a universal Chery interval. If the car was sold elsewhere, ask the local distributor or dealer for the applicable schedule.
4. Verify remaining warranty with an authorised dealer
Ask the seller for the first-delivery date, warranty registration and any transfer paperwork. Then contact an authorised Chery dealer in the car’s current market and ask it to confirm, in writing if possible:
- whether the VIN is present in its customer system;
- the date from which the warranty was started;
- what coverage, if any, remains;
- whether ownership transfer has been recorded;
- which servicing, parts and geographic conditions must be met for coverage to continue; and
- whether an imported vehicle is eligible for local warranty support.
Chery Russia’s published terms provide a useful example of why this check matters: they state that warranty begins when the new vehicle is delivered to its first owner and continues independently of a later ownership transfer. They also say a new owner should obtain access to the Chery customer account. Those provisions are Russia-specific. Do not apply their duration, transfer rules or exclusions to a car sold in another country without confirmation from that market’s Chery network.

If the seller will not provide the first-delivery date or refuses permission for dealer verification, treat the warranty as unproven and value the car accordingly. A manufacturer campaign check and a warranty check are separate; one does not substitute for the other.

5. Establish the car’s original market and import trail
Find out where the Chery was first sold, where it has been registered and whether it has crossed a border. Ask for the original purchase invoice, export or import documents, registration history and any conversion or compliance paperwork required in the current country.
Market matters because the official lookup inputs differ: Chile’s reviewed page uses a VIN, Colombia’s accepts a plate or VIN, and Malaysia’s checks product updates by VIN. Warranty administration and the records accessible to a local dealer can also differ. For an imported vehicle, ask the current distributor which historic services it can see and whether warranty or campaign work performed in the original market is recognised locally.
A gap between the country of manufacture, first registration and current registration is not automatically a defect. It is a reason to obtain documents that explain the gap and to avoid assuming that a local dealer has a complete international record.

Choose a mechanic who is independent of the seller and who can inspect the specific Chery’s powertrain and electronic systems. Schedule the inspection before signing a non-refundable contract. Give the mechanic the VIN and ask for a written report with photographs and diagnostic results.

Ask the inspector to assess
- Structure and crash evidence: chassis rails, pillars, floor, welds, panel alignment and signs of cut-and-join repairs or overspray.
- Water ingress: damp carpets, corrosion under seats, stained trim, mould smell and moisture in lamps or electronic modules.
- Powertrain: cold-start behaviour, fluid leaks, abnormal smoke or noises, cooling-system condition and transmission operation appropriate to the model.
- Steering, suspension and brakes: play, uneven wear, warning lights, vibration and brake performance during a controlled road test.
- Tyres and wheels: matching sizes, age and tread pattern, plus damage that could indicate a severe impact.
- Electrical and safety systems: dashboard warnings, airbags, seat-belt pretensioners, cameras, sensors, lights and charging equipment where fitted.
- Diagnostic data: stored fault codes and evidence that warning lights were recently reset. A scan should supplement, not replace, a physical examination.
Request a road test from cold if practical. A warm engine can hide starting, idle or cooling problems. If the seller presents a pre-purchase report, you may read it, but commission your own inspection because the report’s scope, date and independence determine its value.

Red flags that should change your decision
- VIN characters differ between the vehicle, registration and service documents.
- The seller will not let you photograph or independently verify the VIN.
- Service records show mileage that decreases, unexplained multi-year gaps or identical entries copied across visits.
- A campaign appears open and the seller cannot produce completion proof or arrange an authorised appointment.
- The seller claims a warranty remains but cannot provide a first-delivery date or authorise dealer confirmation.
- Fresh paint, disturbed structural seams, water damage or diagnostic warnings appear during inspection.
- The car’s original market is unclear, yet the seller promises that local warranty and campaign coverage are automatic.
- You are pressured to pay before the inspection, dealer call or document review.
One missing invoice may be explainable. A pattern of identity inconsistencies, documentary gaps and inspection defects is materially different: require resolution before purchase or walk away.
A practical pre-payment checklist
- Photograph and transcribe the VIN from the vehicle.
- Match it with registration, seller paperwork and every available service document.
- Identify the first-sale country and current registration country.
- Run the official campaign or product-update lookup for the relevant market and save the result.
- Ask an authorised Chery centre to confirm outstanding work and warranty status.
- Collect the service book, invoices, work orders and parts records; build a date-and-mileage timeline.
- Obtain the correct maintenance schedule for the model, powertrain, year and country.
- Commission an independent inspection and diagnostic scan before signing a binding purchase agreement.
- Resolve every discrepancy in writing and price the car based only on evidence you can verify.
Keep copies of the lookup result, dealer correspondence, inspection report and final sales documents. If you buy, ask the dealer how to transfer the customer account and retain future service invoices so the next owner can verify the same history.

- Will you allow an authorised dealer to verify campaigns and warranty, and an independent mechanic to inspect the car before payment?

- Can you confirm whether listed work was completed and provide the job reference?
- What warranty start date and transfer conditions apply to this VIN?
- Which previous services are visible in your system, and are records from another country recognised?
- What maintenance interval applies to this exact model, powertrain, year and country?
When to proceed, negotiate or walk away

The safest used-Chery purchase is not the one with the cleanest single lookup. It is the one whose identity, market, documentary timeline, campaign status, warranty position and present condition all agree.
