The correct choice is tied to the vehicle’s model year, make, model, and exact engine. Before buying oil or scheduling service, use the matching owner’s manual to verify two separate items: the required oil specification (such as a dexos category) and the SAE viscosity grade. Then use the capacity listed for that same engine and service condition.
GM’s lookup process starts with year, make, and model rather than a VIN. Once you have the manual, the procedure below shows where to find the oil requirement, how to interpret capacity information, and how to avoid common mistakes such as borrowing specifications from another engine or filling to a number without checking the dipstick or electronic level procedure.

Why the exact GM engine matters
GM sells vehicles under several makes and uses multiple gasoline and diesel engines within the same model year. Two engines in one vehicle can require different viscosities, different oil specifications, and different crankcase capacities. A specification from a similar-looking vehicle is not a safe substitute.

Diesel guidance has also changed. A 2025 Chevrolet/GMC 3.0L Duramax diesel supplement specifies dexosD and SAE 0W-20, and directs the owner to the capacity table for the crankcase quantity. That requirement should not be transferred to a different diesel or gasoline engine.
Think of the task as matching four identifiers:
- Model year
- GM make and model
- Engine and, where applicable, engine code
- The service context stated by the manual, such as oil and filter replacement
If you cannot identify the engine confidently, pause before selecting oil. The vehicle documentation, a GM dealer, or another qualified service professional can identify it from the vehicle records and equipment.
Find the correct owner’s manual
Use GM’s online manual lookup
GM’s Manuals and Guides process asks you to select the vehicle’s year, make, and model. GM states that VIN search is not currently available on that page, so have those three selections ready rather than expecting to paste a VIN and receive a result.
- Open GM’s official Manuals and Guides page.
- Select the model year.
- Select the GM make, such as Chevrolet or GMC.
- Select the exact model.
- Open the owner’s manual or the manual section that covers vehicle care, fluids, and specifications.
For 2008-and-newer vehicles, GM also points owners to the matching vehicle app, where the manual can be searched. Use the app only after confirming that the selected vehicle and year match yours.
Confirm the manual before using a number
Do not rely on a search result that merely contains the same model name. A mid-year powertrain change, a different body style, or a diesel version can change the answer. Check the manual’s title, model year, make, and engine descriptions. If the manual has separate sections for engines, use the one that describes the engine installed in your vehicle.
Save or print the relevant pages once you have identified them. Keeping the oil-selection page and the capacity table together prevents a later search for a similar model from replacing the correct information. If a used vehicle came with incomplete records, the manual remains the authoritative starting point, while a GM dealer or qualified service professional can resolve an engine-identification question.
Locate the oil specification and SAE viscosity
Search for the oil-selection section
In the manual, look for a heading such as “Selecting the Right Engine Oil”, usually within Vehicle Care or a similar maintenance section. The wording can vary, but the section normally identifies both the required specification and the viscosity grade.
Record the two requirements separately:
- Oil specification: the performance approval the oil must meet, such as the dexos category stated for that engine.
- SAE viscosity grade: the numbered grade, such as 0W-20, 5W-20, or 5W-30.
Matching the viscosity alone does not prove that the oil meets GM’s required specification. Conversely, an oil carrying an appropriate specification is not automatically correct if its viscosity does not match the manual.
Copy the designation exactly, including any suffix or generation wording. Treat a general phrase such as “synthetic” as a description of the base oil, not as a replacement for the required performance specification. The manual’s specification and grade are the two checks that determine whether a container is suitable.

Read the label correctly
GM says licensed dexos oils carry the relevant dexos mark. When comparing containers, look for the specification identified in your manual and verify the SAE grade shown on the label. A product can be available in several grades, so the brand or product family name is not enough to make the choice.
As an example of a product category, GM’s catalog includes ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 engine oil in multiple viscosities. Treat that only as an example of a licensed oil family: select a viscosity and specification after checking the manual for your particular engine.

When shopping in person, read the container rather than relying on a shelf tag or an online title. If the label does not clearly show the required approval or grade, set that product aside until the specification can be verified. This avoids treating a familiar brand as proof of fitment.
Understand current dexos terminology
Gasoline and light-duty diesel categories
GM states that dexos2 has been replaced by dexosD for light-duty diesel engines and dexosR for gasoline engines. The owner’s manual still controls the selection for a specific vehicle, including the viscosity that must accompany the specification.
GM’s dexos1 Gen 3 information says that Gen 3 exceeds dexos1 Gen 2 performance and is backward compatible for vehicles that previously used dexos1 or Gen 2, provided the oil has the appropriate viscosity. That statement describes the specification relationship; it does not eliminate the need to read the vehicle manual.
Do not infer a transition from the model year alone
Specification names can change while vehicles remain in service. Do not assume that a newer category applies to every older engine, or that an older category is correct for a newer one. Use the exact wording in the manual and the current label on the oil container. If the manual and label appear inconsistent, ask a GM service professional before filling the engine.

Find the correct oil capacity
Use “Capacities and Specifications”
Open the manual’s “Capacities and Specifications” section and find the entry for the exact engine. GM’s diesel supplement specifically directs readers to that section for crankcase capacity. Record the unit used by the manual and whether the figure is given for an oil-and-filter change or another service condition.
Capacity is a service reference, not permission to pour a fixed quantity into an engine without checking the level. Manuals may distinguish a refill with a new filter from a refill after draining, and residual oil can remain in the engine. The capacity must therefore be read with its heading, footnotes, and service basis.

Do not silently round a converted figure or combine numbers from different units. If you need to convert quarts to litres for purchasing, keep the manual’s original figure beside the conversion and use the level-check procedure to establish the final amount. The dipstick or electronic reading is the final confirmation after the engine has been serviced.
Never borrow capacity from another engine
Do not copy a quantity from a different displacement, cylinder count, fuel type, model year, or body style. Even when two engines use the same viscosity, their sumps, filters, and fill quantities can differ. If your manual lists multiple engines in a table, match the engine designation exactly before using the number.
Record units and the filter condition
Write down the manual’s units, such as quarts or litres, rather than converting from memory. If the table says the value includes the filter, keep that qualification with the number. If the manual does not state the basis in the line you are reading, inspect nearby notes or ask the service department; do not assume that every published capacity means the same thing.
Use the level-check procedure after filling
After an oil change or top-up, follow the manual’s checking instructions exactly. Depending on the vehicle, the procedure may specify a warm or cool engine, a waiting period after shutdown, a level surface, and either a dipstick or an electronic oil-level display. The correct procedure is part of the specification because the reading changes with temperature and drain-back time.
- Park on the surface and prepare the vehicle as the manual directs.
- Run or shut down the engine only as specified, then wait the stated time if a drain-back interval is required.
- Check the dipstick or electronic level indicator using the manual’s method.
- If the level is below the acceptable range, add a small amount of the already verified oil.
- Allow the oil to settle and check again before adding more.
- Stop when the level is within the marked operating range; do not treat the listed capacity as a target above that range.
GM warns that oil above or below the acceptable operating range can harm the engine. Overfilling can cause the crankshaft to aerate the oil or force oil into areas not designed to contain it; underfilling can reduce lubrication. If you discover an overfill, do not continue driving normally while hoping it will correct itself. Have the excess removed using the vehicle’s service procedure.

How to compare two oils
If two containers are under consideration, compare them in this order:
- Check whether each container states the required dexos or other specification from the manual.
- Check whether each container has the required SAE viscosity.
- Confirm that the label is legible and that the product is intended for the engine type, especially when comparing gasoline and diesel oils.
Do not rank oils by brand, price, or viscosity alone. An inexpensive oil that lacks the required specification is not equivalent to one that meets it, and a high-quality oil in the wrong grade still fails the vehicle’s stated requirement.
Common situations and the right decision
You know the model but not the engine
Do not guess from the badge or trim name. Use the manual’s engine list, the vehicle documentation, or a GM service professional to identify the engine before buying oil.
The online manual page has no VIN search
This is expected on GM’s current Manuals and Guides page. Select year, make, and model instead, then verify the manual against the vehicle. For eligible 2008-and-newer vehicles, the matching app may provide a searchable version.

The oil has the right SAE grade but no dexos mark
Do not assume that the viscosity makes it acceptable. Find an oil whose label confirms the specification required by the manual, or obtain clarification from a qualified GM service source.
The oil has a dexos mark but the wrong viscosity
Do not use it merely because it is licensed. A specification and viscosity are separate requirements; locate the same specification in the viscosity listed for your engine.
The capacity table lists several numbers
Read the engine row, units, footnotes, and filter/service condition together. If the table is unclear, ask the service department to interpret the entry before filling.
The dipstick reads low after adding the listed capacity
Recheck the manual’s checking conditions, including waiting time and temperature. Confirm that the filter and drain plug were serviced correctly, then add small increments and recheck. Do not add a large extra amount solely to reach the printed capacity.

The level is above the full mark
Stop adding oil and arrange removal of the excess according to the service procedure. GM’s warning covers both overfill and underfill; a level above the operating range should not be ignored.

Before purchasing supplies, write the four identifiers and the two oil requirements on one note. Take that note with you or keep it beside the vehicle during service. This prevents a purchase made for a family member’s similar GM model from being confused with the oil for your vehicle.
Confirm whether the scheduled service is an oil-and-filter replacement or only a top-up. The capacity table may use a different service basis, and the amount needed for topping off is determined by the level reading, not by the full crankcase figure. If another person performs the work, provide the manual page or the exact specification and grade rather than saying only “GM oil.”
Keep the container information and service receipt with the vehicle records. The records should identify the oil specification and viscosity used when that information is available. If a technician proposes a different grade or specification, ask which manual entry supports the change before authorizing the fill.
What the warranty warning means
In its 2025 diesel supplement for the applicable 3.0L Duramax engine, GM states: “Failure to use the recommended engine oil or equivalent can result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.” The warning is tied to that supplement’s vehicle and engine context. It reinforces the practical rule: use the specification and viscosity stated for your engine, retain service records, and do not substitute based only on a familiar model name.

- Have the model year, make, model, and engine confirmed.
- Open the matching owner’s manual or the correct vehicle-app manual.
- Write down the required oil specification exactly.
- Write down the required SAE viscosity exactly.
- Find the capacity under “Capacities and Specifications.”
- Note whether the quantity includes the filter and which units are used.
- Choose a container whose label satisfies both the specification and viscosity requirements.
- After filling, use the manual’s level-check procedure and confirm the final reading.
This process is more reliable than using a universal GM chart because it keeps every decision tied to the engine actually installed in the vehicle.
