How to Check the Battery Health of a Used Audi e-tron GT

A professional Audi high-voltage battery capacity or SOH report is the reliable pre-purchase check. Learn what to request, how to read it and how UK and New Zealand warranty rules differ.

The dependable way to check a used Audi e-tron GT’s battery is to obtain a written high-voltage battery capacity or state-of-health (SOH) assessment from an Audi Centre or a qualified Audi high-voltage specialist. Ask the seller to authorize the inspection, make your offer conditional on receiving the report, and verify the result against the car’s VIN, age, mileage and local warranty terms.

Use the dashboard range, a road test and a charging session to check ordinary operation, but do not treat any of them as a battery-capacity test. Audi says an Audi Centre can diagnose battery SOH; the centre’s report is the evidence you need before committing to the purchase. Audi UK puts it plainly: “The state of health (SOH) of your battery can be diagnosed at your local Audi Centre.”

What “battery health” means on an e-tron GT

Two measurements are often confused:

  • State of charge (SOC) is how much energy is in the battery at that moment. The percentage on the instrument display and in the myAudi app is an SOC indication.
  • State of health (SOH) describes the battery’s condition or remaining capacity compared with a reference condition. It is the relevant measurement when you are assessing degradation.

A car showing 80% charge does not have an 80% healthy battery; it simply has an estimated 80% of its currently available energy stored. Audi’s owner information identifies charging speed, driving style, charging volume and temperature as factors that influence capacity decline. Range also changes with speed, weather, heating or air-conditioning, road conditions and payload.

Net energy is not the same as gross capacity

The usable, or net, battery energy is the portion available for driving. Gross theoretical capacity is larger because the battery-management system keeps a reserve to protect the cells and support durability. Audi New Zealand’s warranty booklet defines net energy in this way. A report that quotes a percentage is meaningful only when you know whether its reference is usable/net capacity, gross capacity or another manufacturer-defined value.

That distinction matters when comparing paperwork from different dealers. Two reports can show percentages that appear comparable while using different reference values. Ask the issuing centre to state the reference capacity and the actual measured value, not just a rounded percentage. If the adviser cannot explain what the denominator represents, do not use the number to rank cars.

Arrange the right inspection before you buy

1. Request any existing battery report

Ask the seller for every Audi battery-health certificate or diagnostic report already issued. Check that it includes:

  • the vehicle identification number (VIN);
  • the test date;
  • the measured capacity or SOH value and its units;
  • the mileage recorded during the test;
  • any battery-management warnings, fault codes or repair notes; and
  • whether the assessment was a warranty test or a general health check.

A report without a VIN or date cannot reliably be tied to the car in front of you. A very old report may no longer represent the battery’s current condition, particularly if the car has accumulated substantial mileage or undergone a battery repair. Ask whether the vehicle has had a battery, module, cooling-system or charging-system repair since the report was issued.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Make the sale conditional on a fresh assessment

If no recent, traceable report exists, put the requirement in writing before paying a non-refundable deposit. State that the transaction depends on an Audi Centre or qualified Audi high-voltage specialist completing a battery assessment and supplying the written result. Ask the centre about the test’s scope, fee and expected turnaround; Audi’s published guidance does not establish one universal price or waiting time.

Have the seller authorize the inspection or attend with you. A workshop may not release vehicle data to a prospective buyer without the owner’s permission. Keep the appointment confirmation and the final report with the purchase paperwork. Confirm whether the quoted service is a warranty-capacity assessment, a general diagnostic health check, or both, because the terminology and deliverables may differ.

3. Ask the technician to explain the result

Do not accept a single percentage without context. Ask the service adviser to identify:

  • the reference capacity used for the calculation;
  • whether the figure represents usable/net energy or another capacity basis;
  • the diagnostic procedure and whether it follows Audi’s manufacturer protocol;
  • any warning messages, isolation faults, cell or module anomalies and relevant stored faults;
  • whether the test was performed for warranty eligibility or as a general health check; and
  • what the result means for the car’s remaining warranty.

A warranty threshold is a coverage trigger, not a promise that the battery is “like new.” Two cars that are both above a threshold can have different capacity, charging behaviour or remaining warranty. A report should also be read with the test date and odometer: SOH is a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee.

How Audi’s diagnostic measurement works

Audi New Zealand describes an authorised-service-centre warranty procedure in which usable capacity is measured in amp-hours during a qualified charging stroke, multiplied by nominal battery voltage and evaluated with the manufacturer diagnostic protocol. That description explains why a professional report is required; it is not an instruction for an owner to reproduce the test with a home charger, an OBD reader or a spreadsheet.

Ask the centre to state which procedure it used and to provide the actual measured value as well as any percentage. If the report uses a different reference from another report, have the technician explain the difference before you compare the cars. A percentage copied from an app or a generic scan tool is not equivalent to an Audi capacity assessment.

The procedure can also identify information that a simple range estimate cannot, such as stored battery-management faults or an assessment made specifically for warranty eligibility. Ask whether the result is valid for the vehicle’s market and warranty contract. A local retailer can explain how the test is recorded in Audi’s service system and whether any follow-up inspection is required.

Verify the car’s warranty using its VIN

Warranty coverage depends on the market in which the car was originally sold, its in-service or registration date, mileage and the terms and exclusions in force there. Give the VIN to an Audi retailer in your market and request written confirmation of the remaining high-voltage battery warranty. Do not apply a UK or New Zealand threshold to an imported car or to a vehicle sold under different local terms.

Market and document Published battery coverage point How the limit is applied Important qualification
United Kingdom — Audi UK Approved Used guidance 70% of capacity Up to eight years or 100,000 miles Audi Approved Used fully electric cars under eight years old receive a multipoint check and battery health certificate. Coverage remains subject to the applicable terms and exclusions.
New Zealand — Audi warranty booklet (2026) At least 80% of Initial Value Earlier of up to three years or 60,000 km The figure is specific to Audi GT/RS e-tron vehicles and the cited New Zealand booklet.
New Zealand — Audi warranty booklet (2026) At least 70% of Initial Value Earlier of up to eight years or 160,000 km Authorised Audi service centres use the manufacturer diagnostic protocol; warranty repair is described as restoring capacity to the applicable minimum.

The New Zealand figures mean “at least 80% of the Initial Value” at the earlier of three years or 60,000 km, and “at least 70% of the Initial Value” at the earlier of eight years or 160,000 km. They are regional warranty terms, not a prediction of average degradation or a universal buying rule. For a particular car, the VIN, original delivery date, odometer and local contract control.

Ask specifically whether the warranty transfers to a subsequent owner, whether servicing requirements apply, and whether accident, flood or unauthorised repair exclusions are relevant. Those details are contract-specific, so obtain the answer from Audi for the individual VIN rather than relying on a seller’s summary.

Use a road test and charging session for operating evidence

These checks can reveal faults or abnormal behaviour, but they cannot replace the SOH report.

Before driving

  1. Photograph the displayed charge percentage, estimated range, odometer and any warning messages.
  2. Confirm that no high-voltage, propulsion, charging-system or battery-temperature warning is illuminated.
  3. Check the myAudi app or vehicle display for the same basic charge and projected-range information, recognising that both are estimates.

During the drive

  1. Drive on a route that includes low-speed streets and faster roads, using the climate system normally.
  2. Watch for power limitation, unexpected regenerative-braking changes, drivetrain warnings or a sudden drop in the projected range.
  3. Note the weather, temperature, traffic, speed, hills, HVAC setting and number of occupants. Those conditions explain range variation; they do not isolate battery degradation.

During a charging session

  1. Use a known-good compatible charger and cable at a location where you can observe the session.
  2. Confirm that the car starts charging, reports the expected connection and does not repeatedly stop or show a fault.
  3. Record the starting and ending SOC, elapsed time and any displayed charging power.
  4. Ask the technician to interpret unusual behaviour. Charging speed varies with battery temperature, charger capability, SOC and other conditions, so one session is not a capacity measurement.

A projected-range number is especially easy to misread. Audi says range depends on driving conditions, temperature, speed, HVAC use and load, while capacity itself declines through use and charging. Audi also cautions against applying new-car figures directly to an older used battery. Treat the road test as an operational check and the professional diagnostic report as the health measurement.

Inspect history and physical condition around the battery

Battery condition is only one part of high-voltage risk. Ask for the complete service and repair history and have a specialist examine:

  • previous high-voltage battery, module or cooling-system repairs;
  • stored diagnostic faults and the date they were cleared;
  • accident or flood history;
  • underbody impact, scraping or deformation near the battery enclosure;
  • evidence of charging-system repairs; and
  • gaps between recorded mileage and service dates.

Underbody damage or an accident claim warrants a high-voltage specialist’s assessment even when the dashboard is currently clear. A clean display does not prove that no historical fault or repair exists. Ask for invoices and repair dates where available, then give them to the inspecting centre so the technician can interpret the SOH result alongside the vehicle history.

Compare e-tron GTs on evidence, not a single percentage

When several cars are available, put the following information side by side:

  • measured capacity or SOH, with the test date and mileage;
  • the test method and capacity basis used;
  • remaining high-voltage warranty and its market-specific conditions;
  • age, odometer reading and original in-service date;
  • service, battery-repair and accident history;
  • diagnostic warnings found during the inspection; and
  • observed charging and driving behaviour under comparable conditions.

A newer car with a slightly lower reported percentage may still have more absolute usable capacity or more warranty remaining than an older car with a higher percentage. Ask the workshop to explain any difference in reference capacity before ranking the cars. Also compare the test dates: a recent, VIN-linked report is more useful than an older certificate with no mileage update.

Common mistakes and the correct response

Relying on the dashboard range

Mistake: treating the projected range as proof of SOH. Fix: record the conditions and use the number only as an operating clue; obtain the Audi diagnostic assessment.

Confusing SOC with SOH

Mistake: assuming a high charge percentage means a healthy battery. Fix: request a measured capacity or SOH result tied to the VIN and test date.

Using a generic consumer scanner

Mistake: buying an unvalidated scanner, charger or cable and treating its output as an Audi warranty measurement. Fix: use an Audi Centre or qualified high-voltage specialist. No official guidance establishes a generic consumer accessory as a validated e-tron GT SOH test.

Applying another country’s warranty rule

Mistake: assuming the UK or New Zealand threshold applies to an imported or differently registered car. Fix: have a local Audi retailer verify coverage from the VIN, original delivery date and mileage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accepting an unexplained “battery certificate”

Mistake: relying on a percentage with no method, reference capacity or warranty context. Fix: ask the issuing centre to identify the procedure, capacity basis, warnings and purpose of the test.

Assuming a warranty threshold means excellent condition

Mistake: treating a result above the warranty minimum as proof that the battery is nearly new. Fix: compare the actual measured value, test date, mileage, charging behaviour and remaining coverage. Thresholds define when a warranty remedy may apply; they do not describe every aspect of battery condition.

Buyer’s battery-health checklist

  1. Obtain the VIN, mileage, original in-service date and selling market.
  2. Request any existing Audi battery certificate or diagnostic report and check its date and VIN.
  3. Confirm remaining local high-voltage warranty directly with Audi.
  4. Before purchase, obtain the seller’s written authorization for an Audi Centre or qualified high-voltage specialist inspection.
  5. Ask the centre to report measured capacity/SOH, reference basis, method, warnings and warranty interpretation.
  6. Review battery, charging-system, accident and underbody-damage history.
  7. Complete a road test and observed charging session, recording the conditions and any warnings.
  8. Compare cars using documented measurements, warranty and history rather than projected range alone.
  9. Keep the report, invoice and VIN-specific warranty confirmation with the sale documents.

If the seller will not permit a VIN-linked professional assessment, you cannot establish the battery’s condition to the same standard. Treat that refusal as a purchasing risk rather than trying to substitute a dashboard estimate or generic device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check an e-tron GT’s battery health from the dashboard?

No. The dashboard and myAudi app show state of charge and an estimated range, not a manufacturer SOH measurement. Use them to check operation, then obtain a written Audi Centre or qualified-specialist assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does an Audi battery-health test cost?

Audi guidance does not set one universal fee or turnaround. Ask the local centre for the scope, price and expected completion time before booking, and clarify whether the service is a warranty test or a general health check.

What should a battery-health report contain?

It should be tied to the VIN and test date and identify the measured capacity or SOH, units, mileage, reference capacity, capacity basis, diagnostic method, warnings or fault information, and whether it was performed for warranty eligibility.

Is 70% SOH always the pass or fail point?

No. Thresholds depend on market, vehicle terms, time and mileage. Audi UK describes 70% coverage to eight years or 100,000 miles, while Audi New Zealand’s 2026 booklet lists separate GT/RS e-tron points of 80% by the earlier of three years or 60,000 km and 70% by the earlier of eight years or 160,000 km. Confirm the individual VIN locally.

Does a fast or slow charging session prove battery condition?

No. Charging power changes with battery temperature, charger capability, state of charge and other conditions. A session can reveal charging faults, but it cannot replace a capacity or SOH assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy an OBD scanner to test the battery?

There is no validated generic consumer scanner, charger or cable established for an e-tron GT SOH or warranty measurement. Use an Audi Centre or qualified Audi high-voltage specialist instead.

What if the seller refuses an Audi inspection?

You cannot establish the battery’s condition to the same standard without a VIN-linked professional report. Treat refusal as a purchasing risk and do not substitute a range estimate or generic device.

Why do two reports show different percentages?

They may use different reference capacities or capacity bases, such as usable/net energy versus another manufacturer-defined value. Ask the issuing technician to explain the method and denominator before comparing the cars.

The Bottom Line

Before buying a used Audi e-tron GT, make the sale conditional on a written, VIN-linked battery capacity or SOH assessment from an Audi Centre or qualified high-voltage specialist. Verify the local warranty separately, read the report’s method and reference capacity, and use road and charging tests only as operating checks.
