The reliable way to check a sedan’s boot space is to inspect and measure the exact car you may buy, then test-fit the luggage or equipment you actually carry. A headline figure such as “470 litres” describes a measured volume, not a promise that your suitcase, stroller, golf bag or wheelchair will pass through the opening. Confirm the model year, trim, market, drivetrain and seat configuration; identify how the manufacturer measured capacity; measure the opening and the narrowest usable points; and, whenever possible, put your own item in the dealer’s car.
Why the litre figure is only a starting point
Boot capacity is usually presented as a single number because it is easy to compare in a specification sheet. Real cargo, however, has a fixed shape. A rectangular suitcase may be too wide for the opening even when its calculated volume is well below the published capacity. A stroller can have wheels or a handle that catches on the sill. A golf bag may need to be angled diagonally. A mobility aid may require a low loading lip and a particular opening height.

The usable space is also three-dimensional. The floor may be deep but narrow near the back seats, the roof line may slope down, and hinge arms can occupy space that is included in a broad volume measurement. Treat the published number as a way to shortlist cars, then verify the physical route from the pavement to the final position in the boot.

Understand how boot capacity was measured
VDA block measurement
VDA capacity is measured by filling the luggage area with standardized blocks. Each block is 200 × 100 × 50 mm and represents 1 dm³ (one litre). The blocks make the result repeatable, but they can occupy small spaces that a real object cannot reach or use. The number therefore describes geometric volume rather than the fit of a particular item.

SAE and maximum-load-volume figures
Manufacturers may also publish an SAE figure or a maximum-load-volume figure. These methods use different procedures and boundaries. Ford’s support guidance warns that an SAE-rated figure and a VDA-rated figure are not an accurate direct comparison. When comparing two sedans, compare like with like: the same measurement method, the same seat position and the same cover or parcel-shelf condition.
Keep normal and expanded configurations separate
A specification can show a normal boot with the rear seatbacks upright and a larger figure with seats folded, a cover removed or a load taken to the roofline. Those are different use cases. Record which configuration applies before drawing a conclusion, and do not use a maximum-volume figure to answer whether your everyday luggage fits beneath the parcel shelf.
Check the exact vehicle identity first
Capacity can change within one model range. Before relying on a brochure or online specification, write down the complete identity of the car:

- Model year or production generation.
- Trim level and body style.
- Sales market or country.
- Engine, hybrid system or battery configuration.
- Front- or all-wheel drive, where offered.
- Spare wheel, tire-repair kit or subwoofer arrangement.
- Rear-seat position and whether the parcel shelf or cargo cover is fitted.
Use the official specification page or brochure for that exact combination. A similarly named sedan in another country may have different bumpers, safety equipment, seat hardware or underfloor storage. A hybrid battery, a full-size spare or a different exhaust layout can raise the floor and reduce the usable height even when the advertised capacity looks similar.
What to measure at the car
Measure the route your cargo must take, not just the widest point inside the boot. A retractable tape measure is useful, but it does not replace a test fit. Record measurements in millimetres and use the same reference points if you are comparing several cars.
Clear opening width
With the boot lid fully open, measure the narrowest horizontal distance through the opening. Check the upper corners and the area where the opening tapers toward the back seats. Do not measure from the widest outer edges of the lid or from the trim that your item cannot pass through.

Clear opening height
Measure from the lower sill or loading lip to the lowest point of the opening. If the lid hinges or weather seal intrude, measure below those obstructions. Compare this height with the shortest orientation in which your item can be inserted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsable internal width
Measure between the interior trim panels at the narrowest point, including the wheel-arch bulges. A floor that is wide at the bumper can become much narrower near the seatbacks. If you plan to carry two items side by side, measure the width with both items represented, not just the empty boot.
Floor depth
Measure from the inside edge of the loading lip to the rear-seat backrest. Note whether the backrest is reclined and whether a raised floor panel changes the distance. For long objects, also measure the diagonal route to the opposite corner.
Available height
Measure from the boot floor to the parcel shelf, cargo cover or lowest point of the lid. If you normally keep the cover installed, leave it in place while measuring. A larger maximum height with the cover removed may not be useful for everyday driving, security or visibility.
Loading-lip height and obstructions
Measure the vertical step from the ground to the sill and from the sill to the boot floor. A tall lip can make a heavy case difficult to lift. Look for hinge arms, trim pockets, tie-downs, seat-belt housings and a subfloor edge. Open the underfloor compartment and check whether the spare wheel or repair kit occupies the depth you expected to use.
Use a simple measurement procedure
- Set the car as you will drive it. Put the rear seats in their normal upright position, install the parcel shelf or cover, and leave the driver’s seat adjusted for the intended driver.
- Open the boot completely. Check that the lid stays open and identify hinge arms, seals, trim and the narrowest part of the aperture.
- Measure the opening. Record clear width and clear height at the tightest points, not the exterior dimensions.
- Measure the interior. Record floor depth, narrowest internal width, usable height and both loading-lip heights.
- Check the floor and sides. Lift the floor panel, inspect the spare-wheel well and note any raised sections, power cables or protruding hardware.
- Measure the maneuvering space. Leave room to tilt, rotate or slide the item through the aperture. A perfect numerical match with no clearance is not a practical fit.
- Photograph or write down the results. Keep the measurements with the vehicle’s exact model and trim so a later comparison does not mix configurations.
Compare the boot with the item you carry
Measure the cargo itself in the orientation you expect to use. For a suitcase, record length, width, height and the largest protrusion from wheels or handles. For a stroller, measure it folded with wheels and accessories attached. For sports equipment, include rigid ends, pockets and protective cases. For a mobility device, include footrests, joystick controls and any detachable battery.

Compare the item’s dimensions with the clear opening first. If the item is wider than the opening, a large internal volume will not help. Next compare the item with the narrowest internal width and the available height under the cover. Finally, check the depth and the angle needed to get past the sill and hinge arms.
Allow practical clearance. An item that fits only when pressed against both sides can be difficult to load, may damage trim and leaves no tolerance for a different seat adjustment. For a hard case, a few centimetres of clearance on the tightest dimension makes loading more realistic; the exact margin depends on the item’s flexibility and how much it can be rotated.
Test-fit your own cargo at the dealership
A physical test in the exact vehicle is the strongest check available. Call ahead and ask the dealer to have the specific trim and drivetrain ready; a visually similar car may have a different floor or opening. Bring the real item whenever possible rather than relying on catalogue dimensions.
- Ask to inspect the boot with the rear seats upright and the cover installed.
- Open the lid yourself and check the loading lip and hinge movement.
- Load the item using the same lifting and angle you would use at home.
- Close the lid without forcing it and confirm that the cover, seals and hinges are clear.
- Remove and reload the item once or twice to check that the process is repeatable.
- If two people normally travel with the cargo, have the usual loader perform the test; loading height and weight matter as much as dimensions.
Ask the salesperson to identify the vehicle’s spare-wheel or repair-kit setup and to show any underfloor storage. If the demonstration car is not the exact specification you intend to order, treat the result as provisional and request measurements or a test of the correct car before signing.
Why drivetrain and equipment can change usable space
Two versions of one model can have different boot floors. Hybrid components, an all-wheel-drive axle, a larger exhaust system, a subwoofer or a full-size spare can occupy the underfloor well. A repair kit may leave a deeper cavity than a spare wheel, while a powered tailgate mechanism or additional trim can reduce the opening.
Do not assume that a front-wheel-drive figure applies to an all-wheel-drive car, or that a sedan sold in one market has the same floor in another. Check the capacity and dimensions for the exact drivetrain and equipment list. If the specification gives one volume for a whole range without identifying these differences, measure the particular vehicle rather than inferring the missing detail.

Examples of published figures—and their limits
Model figures illustrate why the method and configuration must travel with the number. Hyundai Australia lists a 474-litre cargo area, measured by VDA, for the i30 Sedan. That is a model-specific specification, not a guarantee that every i30 Sedan trim has an identical usable shape for every item.

The Ariya is an SUV rather than a sedan, so these figures are not sedan benchmarks. They are a useful illustration of how drivetrain can change capacity and how a manufacturer can publish an item example alongside a volume. Nissan also cautions that dimensions are reference values and may vary with vehicle condition or measurement method.

Compare several sedans consistently
When you are choosing between cars, create one worksheet and repeat the same process. Mixing a manufacturer’s VDA figure for one car with an SAE figure for another can produce a misleading ranking. Record the method, seat position, cover position and drivetrain beside every number.

Use the same physical suitcase, stroller or equipment case in both cars. If you cannot bring it, make a cardboard or foam-board mock-up of its maximum dimensions and include wheels, handles and rigid attachments.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the biggest litre number
A higher volume can come from deep corners or low spaces that your rigid item cannot reach. Check the opening and narrowest dimensions before treating capacity as an advantage.

Measuring only the floor
A case can fit on the floor but fail to pass through the aperture. Measure the opening first, then the internal floor and height.
Ignoring the cover
If you need the parcel shelf for security or visibility, measure with it installed. A maximum figure with the cover removed answers a different question.
Trusting a different demonstration car
Confirm the drivetrain, spare-wheel arrangement and trim. If they differ from the car you will buy, request the exact vehicle or treat the result as unverified.
Forcing a tight fit
Do not use the lid or trim as a clamp. A forced fit can damage seals, interfere with hinges or prevent the lid from latching safely.
If a dealer test fit is not possible
Ask for the official dimensional drawing or specification for the exact vehicle and request clarification about measurement points. Compare those dimensions with your cargo’s maximum length, width and height, including protrusions. A manufacturer’s drawing may not show every hinge or trim contour, so mark the result as a calculated fit rather than a confirmed one.
You can also make a full-size mock-up from cardboard, foam board or folded blankets. Match the item’s rigid outer dimensions and attempt to insert it through an opening with the measured width and height. This will reveal obvious aperture problems, but it cannot reproduce every contour, loading-lip height or hinge obstruction. A dealer test remains preferable when the purchase decision depends on a few millimetres.
Bring this checklist to the dealership
- The exact model year, trim, market and drivetrain you are considering.
- The manufacturer’s stated capacity and its measurement method.
- Your cargo’s maximum length, width, height and protrusions.
- A tape measure or a full-size mock-up of the cargo.
- A note sheet for clear opening width and height.
- Measurements for narrowest internal width, floor depth, usable height and loading lips.
- Confirmation of the spare wheel, repair kit, hybrid hardware and parcel-shelf position.
- A plan to load and unload the item more than once.
Make the buying decision
Choose the sedan that accommodates your real cargo in the configuration you will use, not necessarily the one with the largest advertised litre figure. A slightly smaller boot with a wide, tall opening and a low lip can be more practical than a deeper boot with a narrow aperture and intrusive hinges. If your item fits only with the cover removed, the seats moved or the lid forced, it does not meet your normal requirement.
The final check is straightforward: verify the exact specification, identify the measurement method, measure the opening and usable space, compare those dimensions with your own cargo, and test-fit it in the actual car. That process turns an abstract capacity claim into a purchase decision you can trust.
