What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look for slow cranking, dim lights, or repeated jump-starts, then check the battery’s resting voltage with a multimeter. These clues and a voltage reading can point to a weak or discharged battery, but neither alone proves the battery has failed.
What symptoms can point to a weak car battery?
- Slow or difficult cranking: The engine turns over sluggishly or struggles to start. A weak battery can cause this, but other faults can produce similar symptoms. AAA lists slow starting as a sign of a dying battery.
- Dim lights with the engine off: Dim interior lights or headlights may indicate that the battery is not supplying enough power.
- Repeated jump-starts: If the car repeatedly needs a jump and there is no obvious reason the battery was drained, it may be losing its ability to hold a charge.
- A single loud click: This can point to a starter problem rather than a dead battery.
- Warning light or flickering lights while driving: A battery warning light or flickering lights with the engine running can indicate an alternator, charging-system, or ground-cable issue. The warning light does not by itself establish that the battery has failed.
Symptoms are clues, not a diagnosis. No-start problems can also involve the starter, ignition switch, alternator, fuse, or electrical connections. Interstate Batteries describes other possible causes and the limits of a jump-start.
How to check battery voltage with a multimeter
A resting-voltage check is a simple at-home screen. It measures voltage at the battery while the car is off; it does not test the battery’s capacity under load or diagnose the charging system.
- Turn the engine off. Park safely and make sure the car is not running for this resting-voltage check.
- Set the meter. Set a digital multimeter to measure DC voltage in the 15–20-volt range.
- Identify the terminals. Find the battery’s positive (+) and negative (−) terminals before connecting anything. If you cannot access or identify them confidently, check the owner’s manual or ask a qualified technician.
- Connect the probes. Place the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal.
- Read the display. Compare the result with the screening guidance below, while keeping in mind that conditions affect interpretation. AAA’s voltage-check guidance describes this procedure.
How to interpret the reading
AAA says approximately 12.6 volts is expected and a reading below 12.2 volts likely means the battery needs charging or replacement. Treat these as initial screening guidance, not a universal pass/fail rule. Temperature, recent driving or charging, battery type, and measurement conditions can affect the reading.

- Catch Battery Problems Early: Featured in two videos by Project Farm, a popular YouTube channel with millions of subscribers, the ANCEL BA101 helps you quickly spot battery issues before they leave you stranded. It provides easy-to-understand readings for State of Health (SOH), State of Charge (SOC), voltage, current, CCA, plus cranking and charging system tests, so you can better understand your battery and help avoid unexpected breakdowns
- Know the Real Condition: Don’t let inaccurate readings lead to costly surprises. Built with high-quality copper crocodile clips and a precision smart chip, this battery tester is designed to deliver dependable results. For the most accurate test, enter the correct battery type, rating value (such as CCA/Ah), and temperature exactly as shown on your battery label, so you get a clearer picture of your battery’s true condition
- Fast, Clear, Hassle-Free Testing: The classic black-and-white screen, adjustable contrast, and white backlight make results easy to read in bright sunlight or low-light conditions. One-handed operation keeps testing simple, while direct power from your vehicle’s battery means no charging and no internal batteries to deal with. Multi-language support makes it easier for more users to test with confidence
- Protection When Mistakes Happen: Built-in 4-in-1 protection helps guard against reverse polarity, short circuits, overcurrent, and overvoltage for safer testing, especially in tight spaces where clamp slips or wiring mistakes can happen. The 3x reinforced ABS housing adds extra durability and helps protect both the tester and your battery during everyday use
- Built for More 12V Batteries: Supporting global standards including JIS, EN, DIN, SAE, BCI, GB, CA, MCA, and IEC, this tester works with 12V batteries used in cars, trucks, boats, RVs, ATVs, lawnmowers, golf carts, and motorbikes over 30Ah. Compatible with Flooded, AGM, GEL, and EFB batteries. Not for lithium batteries, non-12V batteries (6V/8V/24V), or motorcycles below 30Ah. For 6V testing, choose BA101 Plus. For 24V testing, choose BA101 PRO
Interstate Batteries uses different wording in its FAQ: it says a charged battery should read 12.6 volts or higher and calls 11.9 volts or below “dead.” These thresholds are not interchangeable with AAA’s guidance, and a single resting-voltage result cannot confirm battery health.
What to do after checking the battery
If the reading is low
A low reading suggests the battery may be discharged or weak; it does not establish whether it needs charging, replacement, or investigation for another fault. If you choose to charge or jump-start the car, follow the vehicle owner’s manual and the equipment manual for the procedure. AAA advises basic precautions when charging, including removing jewelry and making stable connections before powering the charger. Interstate recommends protective eyewear and gloves when working around an open engine bay.

Give you a more comfortable viewing experience with every inspection. 9 languages supported - English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese and Polish.
If the reading looks normal but the car still will not start
A normal resting voltage does not rule out a battery problem under load or a fault elsewhere. AAA recommends further testing at a repair facility when starting trouble continues despite a normal reading. A professional battery test can assess more than surface voltage and help distinguish battery trouble from a starter, alternator, connection, or other electrical problem.
If a jump-start gets the car running
A jump-start is temporary help, not proof that the battery is healthy. Arrange a battery test afterward, especially if the vehicle repeatedly needs a jump.

When not to jump-start the battery
Do not attempt to jump-start a battery that is visibly swollen, cracked, bulging, or heat-damaged, or one that smells like rotten eggs. AAA says not to touch or drive with a swollen battery and recommends roadside assistance. Corrosion or other visible damage also warrants caution and professional help. Follow the vehicle manual for any jump-start procedure; if you are unsure, contact roadside assistance or a qualified technician.
