Use the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) locator to find and map public hydrogen stations in the United States and Canada. If your trip is in California, verify each planned stop in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership’s Station Operational Status System (SOSS), then check again shortly before departure and while driving.
Keep a reachable backup station and extra time. A map listing is not a promise that a dispenser is open, has enough fuel, accepts your vehicle, or can provide a complete fill.

Use this availability-check workflow
- Map the trip in AFDC. Enter your origin, destination, or route, select hydrogen fueling, and identify stations near the route rather than only at the endpoints.
- Confirm access. Make sure every stop is a public retail station. Private and planned locations can appear when filters are broadened, but they should not be counted as usable road-trip stops without explicit access confirmation.
- Check live operating information. For California stations, open the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership’s SOSS and inspect the station-level status and notes.
- Recheck close to departure. Treat the first check as a plan, not a guarantee. Check the primary stop again before leaving and again as the trip progresses.
- Prepare a fallback. Select another reachable station in case the primary stop is offline, limited, unavailable, unexpectedly busy, or unable to complete a fill.
- Escalate uncertainty. If the status is unknown or the entire trip depends on one station, use the station operator’s or vehicle manufacturer’s current support channel.
This sequence answers both “hydrogen stations near me” and “hydrogen fueling stations along my route.” It also separates discovery from operational confirmation, which is essential because station conditions can change faster than a general map listing.

Why a station on the map may still be unusable
A locator establishes that a station is known at a location. It does not establish that the site is open at the time you arrive, that hydrogen is available, that the dispenser is working, that a queue will be short, or that the station can deliver a full tank. A station marked with a limitation may be able to provide only a partial fill, reducing the distance you can travel afterward.

Hydrogen availability is especially sensitive to supply interruptions and demand spikes. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership reported in a May 4, 2026 bulletin that a California gaseous-hydrogen supply disruption had begun in February 2026. The bulletin said operating stations were experiencing significantly higher-than-normal demand and warned that some stations could have limited fuel or provide partial fills. That is a dated account, not a forecast for every trip or a statement of conditions after the bulletin. It demonstrates why a current status check and contingency plan are necessary.

The AFDC locator is the practical starting point for a U.S. or Canadian journey. SOSS is the more useful operational check for California. H2FCP cautions that it cannot vouch for the accuracy or timeliness of status shown on other platforms, so a third-party map should not override a current station-level notice.
How to map hydrogen stops in the AFDC locator
1. Start with the complete journey
Open the AFDC station locator and enter your starting location and destination, or search the corridor you intend to drive. Select hydrogen fueling rather than relying on a general alternative-fuel map. Route mapping matters because a station that is close to a destination may be too far away to serve as the next stop after a low-fuel departure.

2. Keep the initial filters conservative
The locator defaults to available, publicly accessible stations. Keep those defaults for the first plan. If you broaden the filters to include private or planned locations, label those results separately in your notes. A planned station is not an operating stop, and a private station may not accept an ordinary retail customer.

3. Inspect each candidate station
Open the station record rather than relying only on the map pin. Record its address, access type, and any operating notes shown. Check whether it is actually on your driving side of the route; a station across a divided highway or behind a long detour can consume more range and time than the map distance suggests.
4. Build a sequence, not a single destination
List the departure station, every intended intermediate stop, and the station you would use if the primary stop fails. Do not assume that two pins close together provide redundancy: they may share the same local supply problem or be operated under the same restriction. The locator helps identify alternatives, but the current operational condition must be checked separately.
How to read California’s SOSS status
For California travel, open H2FCP SOSS directly after creating the AFDC route. Stations can be browsed by region, and the display uses several distinct labels. Read the label and the station note together.

“Online” is a snapshot, not a reservation. “Limited” is not equivalent to “closed,” but it is also not equivalent to a dependable full refueling. “Unknown” should never be converted into “probably open” merely because the station appears on a map.

When to check, and what to record
At trip planning time
Map the route far enough in advance to identify whether a usable chain of public stations exists at all. DOE describes public hydrogen retail fueling as concentrated primarily in California, with other markets developing. A nationwide locator therefore does not mean that every state-to-state route has enough stations to support a practical trip.
Write down the primary and backup stations, their access type, and the source and time of the status check. If a route has a long gap between stations, identify an earlier point at which you can turn back or change plans instead of waiting until the tank is nearly empty.
Shortly before departure
Reopen AFDC for any route or station changes and check SOSS for California stops. Look for a change from Online to Limited, Offline, Unavailable, or Unknown, and read any note about supply or service restrictions. A status check made hours or days earlier may no longer represent conditions at departure.

While en route
Check the next station again before committing to the leg, using a safe stopped location or a passenger’s device. If its status has degraded, use the backup while you still have enough range to reach it. H2FCP describes SOSS as real-time, but real-time information still has a timestamp and can lag a sudden outage, queue, or delivery problem.

How to choose a practical backup
A backup is useful only if the vehicle can reach it under the conditions you are actually driving. Select one that is reachable from your current position and leaves enough flexibility for traffic, weather, elevation, detours, and a station that delivers less fuel than expected. The available evidence does not establish a universal safety margin for every vehicle or route, so do not treat any single mileage buffer as a guaranteed rule.
- Prefer a backup in the same general travel corridor, not one that requires an impractical reversal.
- Check that it is public retail rather than private or planned.
- Verify its current status separately; a second pin is not automatically a second operating station.
- Note opening or access restrictions shown by the station record.
- Allow time for a queue or a partial fill, particularly when a supply disruption or higher-than-normal demand has been reported.
- Identify the decision point: if the primary station changes to Limited or Offline, leave enough range to divert immediately.
Do not wait until the primary station is confirmed closed and the vehicle is near its minimum range. Contingency planning works only when the alternate remains reachable before the first plan fails completely.

The map says available, but SOSS says Limited or Offline
For a California stop, use the current SOSS status as the operational warning and do not rely on the generic map label. Replan around the station or confirm a current operator update before proceeding.

Unknown is an information gap, not an approval to travel there. Open the station detail, refresh the display, and seek confirmation through a current operator or automaker support channel. If confirmation is not available, use a verified alternative.

The station is Online, but a driver reports a queue or failed fill
Operational status and line length are different facts. Treat the report as a possible delay, allow additional time, and check whether another station is reachable. A station can be online while demand, payment problems, or a dispenser fault prevents a prompt fill.
The station changes status after you start driving
Stop at a safe location, reassess the remaining route, and switch to the backup before range becomes critical. Do not attempt to interact with a phone while driving.
Use dated counts and bulletins correctly
Station totals provide context, not a trip decision. The DOE AFDC reported 54 open retail hydrogen stations in the United States in 2024. That is historical context and must not be presented as the current national count. Likewise, the California Energy Commission dashboard reports data as of March 31, 2026, with quarterly staff updates, and says the dashboard was last updated June 10, 2026. Those dates describe the reporting snapshot; they do not prove that a particular station is open today.

It documented a disruption that began in February 2026, elevated demand at operating stations, and possible limited fuel or partial fills at some listed stations. Use such notices to justify extra contingency planning, not to claim that every station currently has the same restriction.
Operator and vehicle support when the trip depends on one stop
If a station’s status remains uncertain, use the current contact method published by the station operator. If the issue could involve vehicle compatibility, fueling authorization, or a warning on the car, contact the automaker’s support channel as well. H2FCP’s May 4, 2026 bulletin listed contacts for several California station operators and for Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai; because contact details and conditions can change, verify them on current official pages rather than relying on a saved bulletin.
When you contact support, provide the station name and address, the displayed status, the time you checked it, your vehicle model, and whether you need a full fill or only enough fuel to reach another station. Ask specifically whether retail fueling is available, whether a partial fill is expected, and whether any access restriction applies.
Trip-planning checklist
- Origin and destination entered in AFDC.
- Hydrogen fueling selected.
- Every planned stop confirmed as public retail, not private or planned.
- California stations checked in SOSS, including status notes.
- Status check repeated shortly before departure.
- Next stop checked again during the trip from a safe stopped location.
- Backup station identified and independently checked.
- Time allowed for a queue, delay, or partial fill.
- Decision point defined for diverting before range becomes critical.
- Current operator or automaker support contact available for an uncertain stop.
Bottom line for a hydrogen road trip
Use AFDC to discover and map stations, then use the most current station-level operational information available—especially California’s H2FCP SOSS—to decide whether a stop is dependable enough for your route. Recheck close to departure and en route, distinguish public retail stations from private or planned locations, and keep a reachable backup with time for limited fuel or a queue. This is the difference between knowing where a hydrogen station is and knowing whether it is a sensible place to fuel today.
