Do not rely on a brochure’s ride-height, boot-litre or legroom headline when deciding whether a car will work for your household. At the dealership, verify the lowest point under the exact car you will buy, measure the boot opening and usable shape, and sit in every seat with the people and child seats you actually use. A repeatable check takes less than an hour and can expose problems that published dimensions cannot.
Start with the exact car, not the model name
Dimensions can change with trim, wheel and tyre size, drivetrain, suspension settings, battery packaging and optional equipment. Ask the salesperson to identify the precise vehicle: model year, trim, engine or motor, drive system, wheel and tyre specification, suspension mode and any self-levelling or adjustable-height setting. Photograph or write down the vehicle identification details and the manufacturer’s stated ground clearance and cargo volume.

Record the conditions attached to every published number. A clearance figure may be measured with a specified tyre, load, fuel level or suspension setting. Boot volume may be quoted with seats folded, a variable floor in a particular position, or a measurement method that does not represent a suitcase or pushchair. A number without its trim and test conditions is not a like-for-like comparison.

How much ground clearance do you really need?
Ground clearance is not the distance from the ground to the middle of the floor. It is limited by the single lowest fixed point. European vehicle-approval rules define “ground clearance between the axles” as “the shortest distance between the ground plane and the lowest fixed point of the vehicle.” The same rules describe clearance beneath one axle by reference to the arc around the tyre footprint and the lowest fixed point. In practical terms, one exposed shield, exhaust section, differential, suspension component or battery housing can determine whether you scrape.

Match clearance to your roads and load
List the obstacles you meet rather than choosing an arbitrary “good” number. Include steep driveway transitions, high speed humps, loose tracks, potholes, kerbs, underground car-park ramps and winter snow or mud if relevant. Then consider the car in its normal worst case: all regular passengers, a full boot, a roof load if you use one, and the fuel or battery state that changes the vehicle’s mass. Springs compress under load, reducing the clearance available when you need it.
Approach, breakover and departure angles matter alongside the lowest point. A car can have adequate clearance at its centre yet scrape its front underside on a ramp, ground out between the axles, or catch the rear valance while leaving. The shape and overhangs of the body determine these transitions.
Dealer-lot ground-clearance procedure
- Confirm the specification. Ask for the exact wheel and tyre size, drivetrain, suspension mode and stated measurement/load condition. Note whether the quoted value is unladen or otherwise conditioned.
- Walk around the underside. Look behind the front bumper, along the sills and under the centre and rear of the car. Identify exhaust components, underbody shields, differential or motor housings, battery cases and suspension hardware that sit lower than surrounding panels.
- Measure consistently. If you can safely access the underside, measure from a level ground plane to the lowest fixed point with the same tool and method on every candidate. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack; ask the dealer to place it on an approved lift if a detailed inspection is necessary.
- Check the three transitions. Approach a representative ramp or speed hump slowly, then assess the breakover area between the axles and the departure angle behind the rear axle. Have a spotter outside the car. Drive only where the dealer permits and obey site rules.
- Repeat the thought experiment at full load. Ask how the suspension behaves with the people and luggage you carry. If the vehicle has selectable height, test the normal road setting and confirm when the lower or higher modes are available.
Why a brochure clearance number can mislead
Manufacturers and regulators use controlled conditions so vehicles can be compared. Those conditions are useful, but they are not a promise that every point beneath your loaded car will clear your driveway. Tyre pressure, replacement tyres, suspension wear, snow chains and a heavy tow-ball load can all change the real result. Treat the published figure as a starting comparison, then inspect the lowest hardware and the obstacles on your route.

Boot litres describe a calculated volume, not whether your actual object can enter, stand upright or be secured. A narrow opening can reject a large box even when the quoted volume is generous. Wheel arches, a steeply sloping tailgate, a raised sill, a spare-wheel hump and a step between floor sections can consume the space you need.
The Research Institute for Consumer Testing (RiDC) reports boot sill height, boot-opening width and the boot floor at its narrowest point, often between the wheel arches. When a vehicle has a variable floor, RiDC measures it at the lowest level for maximum usable benefit. These are the kinds of dimensions you should reproduce for your own load rather than comparing litres alone.

Bring a tape and measure the dimensions that affect your items
Bring a 25 ft retractable tape measure and record each result in a comparison sheet. Measure the tightest point, not the widest visual section, and write down whether the rear seats are upright, folded or slid.
- Loading-aperture height: the smallest vertical opening from the sill to the tailgate or hatch frame.
- Loading-aperture width: the narrowest horizontal gap, including any taper near the top or bottom.
- Sill height from the ground: how high you must lift a suitcase, stroller or wheelchair.
- Sill height from the boot floor: the vertical step an item must cross after entering.
- Narrowest floor width: normally the distance between the wheel arches or other intrusions.
- Usable floor length: from the rear seatback to the tailgate at the floor, with the seats in the position you will use.
- Usable height: from the floor to the parcel shelf, roller cover or tailgate trim. Measure below the lowest obstruction.
- Floor shape: note a spare-wheel well, raised section, drainage channel, tie-down points and whether the floor is level when seats are folded.
- Seat-fold angle and opening: check whether folded backrests leave a step or slope and whether the resulting length is enough for your longest item.
Open the tailgate fully and look at its highest point. A hatch that clears the dealership ceiling may strike your garage door, roof beam or shelving. Check the latch, powered-opening height memory and manual release if fitted.

Measure the objects that drive your purchase: a folded stroller, airline suitcase, dog crate, wheelchair, sports equipment, musical instrument or shopping box. Try to pass each object through the opening before placing it in the boot. Then close the tailgate without compressing fragile items or blocking the driver’s view. A diagonally loaded item may fit only with one rear seat folded; record that compromise.
Repeat the test with the rear seats upright, folded and in every sliding position you would use. A car with a sliding second row may offer excellent cargo length only by sacrificing passenger knee room. Record the seat position alongside the cargo measurement so the comparison remains honest.
Regulated cargo measurements and what they do—and do not—tell you
EU Regulation 2018/858 specifies cargo-area conditions. It generally expects a flat cargo surface and, for vehicles with multiple seat rows, assesses the cargo-length criterion with seats upright in their normal use position. The prescribed conditions also specify seat-adjustment positions and a maximum-mass vehicle condition. Those rules make official figures comparable within their defined method; they do not model every suitcase, pram or mobility aid.

Ask the manufacturer or dealer which method produced the quoted litres and whether it includes the space under a variable floor. Compare figures only when the seat configuration and method are equivalent. If the method is not stated, label the number as “published volume—method not stated” in your notes rather than treating it as a guaranteed capacity.
Check the folding mechanism and family access
Operate every rear-seat release yourself. Test releases at the rear doors and from the cargo area, if provided. Confirm that a child or adult cannot accidentally trigger a release, that headrests do not have to be removed, and that the folded seat returns securely to its latch. Mazda recommends checking how difficult the seats are to fold and whether the cargo space and height let a parent assist a child; those checks are relevant to any family vehicle.
Rear-seat comfort depends on the people in front of it
Rear legroom is not a fixed experience. It changes with the driver’s height, seatback angle, steering-wheel reach and preferred pedal distance. A published legroom number may be measured to a standardized reference point rather than to the way your driver sits. Put the actual driver in the car before judging the seat behind them.
A repeatable seating test
- Set the driver’s position first. Have the usual driver adjust the seat, steering wheel, head restraint and mirrors exactly as on a normal trip. Do not move the seat forward merely to create impressive rear space.
- Place the key rear passenger behind that driver. Use the tallest or most frequent adult, teenager or child-seat position. Repeat behind the front passenger if that seat is used differently.
- Check lower-body room. Look for knee clearance, toe room under the front seat, cushion length, thigh support and whether the front seat rails or a centre tunnel interfere.
- Check upper-body room. Assess headroom with the person sitting naturally, shoulder width at the outer bolsters, backrest angle and whether the roof or door trim forces a sideways posture.
- Test entry and exit. Open the rear door fully, step in and out several times, and notice the sill height, door aperture, roofline and any need to twist around a wheel arch or seat bolster.
- Install the real restraint or aid. Fit the child seat, booster, wheelchair cushion or other equipment you use. Check anchor access, buckle reach, front-seat travel and whether the child can be lifted in without hitting the roof or tailgate.
- Sit and drive for several minutes. Use a normal route if possible. Note vibration, road noise, sight lines, ventilation, heating, USB access, armrest position and whether the middle seat is genuinely usable with the outer seats occupied.
Infant seats can change the entire cabin
A rear-facing infant seat extends substantially behind the front seatback. Mazda notes that this can temporarily compromise the space available to taller front occupants. Install your actual seat at its required recline and use the front occupant who is least able to give up legroom. Check that the front seat does not press against the child seat and that the restraint can be tightened without the door or roof obstructing you.
Do not assume two child seats leave a practical centre seat. Fit both restraints, route the belts or ISOFIX connectors as instructed, and see whether an adult can buckle the child and reach the opposite door. A nominal three-person rear bench may function as two seats once real restraints are installed.

Use formal dimensions as comparison tools, not comfort scores
SEAT describes “comfort dimension” as usable interior length measured from the rear-seat backrest to the driving pedals. That can help rank vehicles on a consistent drawing, but it does not describe cushion firmness, posture, entry effort or the way a particular driver positions the seat.
ISO 6549:2026 states that its three-dimensional H-point machine is a checking device for one designated seat position at a time and “is not a device which measures or indicates an occupant’s capabilities or comfort.” SAE J826 makes the same distinction: its devices obtain compartment dimensions, but they are not instruments that measure occupant capability or comfort. Use H-point and legroom data to narrow a shortlist, then use real people and real restraints for the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make every candidate directly comparable
Create one row per vehicle and use the same occupants, tape measure, footwear and measurement points. Record the date and the exact trim so a later test-drive car cannot be confused with a different specification.
| Category | Record for each candidate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle identity | Model year, trim, engine or motor, drivetrain, wheel/tyre size and suspension setting | These can change clearance, cabin packaging and cargo shape. |
| Ground clearance | Published figure and conditions; measured lowest fixed point; approach, breakover and departure observations | The lowest hardware and ramp transitions determine scraping risk. |
| Boot opening | Opening height and narrowest width; sill height from ground and floor | These decide whether heavy or bulky objects can be loaded. |
| Boot interior | Narrowest floor width, usable floor length and height, steps, humps and seat-fold angle | Usable shape is more informative than litres alone. |
| Seat configurations | Seats upright, folded and each sliding position used in practice | Passenger room and cargo length may trade places. |
| Rear-seat fit | Knee, toe, head and shoulder room; cushion support; backrest angle; centre-seat usability | Different body shapes experience the same cabin differently. |
| Access and equipment | Door aperture, entry effort, visibility, ventilation, USB access and release operation | Daily convenience often matters more than a single dimension. |
| Real-load result | Stroller, suitcase, wheelchair, dog crate or other required item; actual child-seat or booster fit | This is the pass/fail test for your household. |
Use a “pass,” “conditional” or “fail” decision for each must-have item. A conditional result should state the required compromise—for example, “fits only with the front passenger seat two notches forward” or “clears the garage ramp only at an angle.” That wording is more useful than a single overall comfort score.

Measuring the widest or highest part
A boot opening that is wide at the sill may taper sharply at the top. A floor that looks broad may narrow between the arches. Measure the tightest section and test the object’s largest dimension through it.
Judging a rear seat with the driver’s seat moved forward
Set the driver first and leave that position unchanged while evaluating the rear. Otherwise you are measuring an artificial cabin that your household will not use.
Ignoring the load state
Clearance and suspension behaviour change when passengers and luggage are aboard. Boot access can also change when a powered tailgate is opened on a slope or when a heavy item is lifted over a high sill. Include the load that matters in your decision.

Regulatory and engineering measurements improve consistency, but they do not predict every occupant’s comfort or every object’s fit. Use them to compare candidates, then complete the physical tests.
Skipping the test drive
NHTSA advises buyers to sit in a vehicle before purchase, check ease of entry and exit, test-drive when possible, ensure comfortable pedal reach and check visibility in all directions. A stationary inspection cannot reveal rear-seat vibration, blind spots, ventilation performance or the way the car behaves over your normal route.
A final dealership checklist
- Bring a 25 ft retractable tape measure, a notebook or phone template, and the actual child seat, booster or mobility aid.
- Confirm trim, tyre size, drivetrain, suspension mode and the conditions behind every published figure.
- Inspect and, where safely possible, measure the lowest fixed underside point—not an average ride height.
- Drive a representative ramp or speed hump slowly with permission and a spotter.
- Measure boot opening, both sill heights, narrowest floor width, usable length and height, and every step or hump.
- Try each required item through the opening, then close the tailgate with seats in the configuration you will use.
- Operate seat-fold releases from every available location and confirm the latches re-engage.
- Set the real driver’s seat, place the real rear occupants behind it, and check entry, posture, visibility and ventilation.
- Install every actual child seat or booster and verify front-seat travel, buckle access and roof clearance.
- Drive on a normal route and write down any compromise instead of relying on memory.
What you can trust in the brochure—and what you must verify
Published clearance, cargo volume, legroom and formal H-point measurements are valuable starting points because they use defined reference conditions. They are not interchangeable: a regulatory clearance is about a lowest fixed point, a cargo-litre figure is a calculated volume, and a comfort dimension or H-point measurement describes a standardized geometry. None guarantees that your driveway, suitcase, child seat or body will fit.
The reliable buying decision combines both kinds of evidence. Use the published data to identify plausible candidates, then apply the same measurement sheet, occupants, loads and route to every car. The vehicle that passes your real-world checks—not the one with the largest headline number—is the one that meets your needs.
