Check the fuel indication on the LCD instrument panel while stopped, but treat it as an estimate rather than an exact litre gauge. The indexed SXR owner’s manual lists about 7 litres total capacity, including 1.5 litres of reserve, and says to refuel before the display reaches empty.
Those capacity figures do not provide a guaranteed distance to empty. The dependable way to plan is to record your own trip distance and litres added over several refills, then choose a conservative stop interval that leaves fuel for detours, traffic, hills, extra load and closed stations.

Confirm which Aprilia you have before using fuel figures
Aprilia’s official product material calls this scooter the SXR 125. The wording “SXR GT 125” can cause confusion because the SR GT 125 is a different model. Its gauge behavior and warning thresholds must not be applied to an SXR 125.

What the SXR 125 fuel display actually tells you
LCD fuel information
The official Aprilia SXR 125 page lists fuel information among the LCD instrument-panel functions. The owner’s manual lists both a Fuel Level indication and a Low fuel warning light. Look at the display while the scooter is stationary and the ignition is on; do not try to interpret a changing indication while concentrating on traffic.
Why the bars are not litre measurements
The manual explicitly cautions: “The fuel tank is not a measuring instrument and the capacity of the fuel tank may slightly vary from the indicated quantity.” A bar or warning therefore cannot be converted into an exact number of litres. Fuel can move in the tank as the scooter accelerates, brakes or leans, and the indication is intended for planning rather than laboratory measurement.
A reading that changes after parking, turning or climbing is not necessarily a fault. Treat a single display position as one observation, then compare it with trip distance and your refill records. A stable pattern over several rides is more useful than trying to assign a precise litre value to each segment of the display.
When the low-fuel warning appears
Use the warning as a prompt to find fuel, not as a promise of a fixed reserve distance. The manual instructs the rider to refuel before the gauge reaches its empty indication and does not establish a dependable number of kilometres remaining after the warning comes on. Reserve fuel is an emergency margin, not a target to consume on every ride.
SXR 125 capacity, reserve and the limits of range estimates
| Specification | What the SXR manual copy states | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Total fuel capacity | About 7 litres, including reserve | Use as a nominal tank size; actual fill quantity can vary slightly. |
| Reserve portion | About 1.5 litres | Contingency fuel only; not a guaranteed distance-to-empty. |
| Minimum fuel to maintain | At least 1 litre | Do not plan to run the tank down to this figure. |
| Verified per-tank range | Not stated by the available Aprilia product material or manual copy | Estimate a personal, conservative interval from your refill records. |
The approximately 7-litre and 1.5-litre figures are manual specifications, not fuel-consumption measurements. No trustworthy SXR 125 test result establishes a universal kilometres-per-tank figure. Consumption changes with speed, stop-and-go traffic, hills, wind, tyre pressure, rider and passenger weight, luggage, temperature and riding style. Multiplying seven litres by an assumed economy number would create a false precision.
The 1-litre minimum is also a specification, not an instruction to arrive at a station with exactly one litre remaining. A station may be closed, a detour may be necessary, or traffic may increase consumption. Keep a practical buffer above the stated minimum, especially on an unfamiliar route.
How to check the fuel level before and during a ride
Before starting
- Park the scooter securely and switch on the ignition without moving off.
- Read the fuel-level indication and note whether the low-fuel warning is illuminated.
- If the indication is low, fill before leaving, especially when the route has long gaps between stations.
- Reset or note the trip meter after filling so the distance to the next refill is recorded.
Checking on level ground and in the same place each time makes your records easier to compare. Do not rock the scooter or open the filler cap simply to obtain a more favorable reading; the display is still an estimate.

During a ride
- Check the display only when stopped at a safe location, such as a fuel station or rest area.
- Compare the displayed level with the trip distance since the last fill; the distance record is often more useful than a single fluctuating bar.
- At each planned break, identify the next station rather than assuming one will be available at the destination.
- Refuel before the indication reaches empty. If the low-fuel warning appears earlier than expected, treat it as an immediate planning signal.
After refueling
Write down the odometer or trip reading and the litres added. Over several fills, these entries reveal how your scooter behaves in your normal conditions. Resetting the trip meter after every fill makes the next interval easy to compare.

Record whether the fill was complete or partial. A partial top-up cannot be used as a full-tank consumption result unless the previous and current fuel levels are known. Note route type, passenger or luggage, heavy traffic and unusual hills so an unusually high or low result has an explanation.
A practical method for planning fuel stops
1. Establish your own consumption record
Use a simple log with the date, trip kilometres, litres added, route type and load. For each completed interval, calculate:
consumption (litres per 100 km) = litres added ÷ kilometres ridden × 100
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlternatively, calculate kilometres per litre by dividing kilometres ridden by litres added. Use several refills rather than one tank. A fill made before the tank was nearly empty will not represent the entire tank, so label partial fills clearly.
Keep the entries from different conditions instead of deleting the worst result. The highest consumption you have actually observed is a useful warning for planning hills, traffic or a passenger. It still is not a manufacturer range figure, but it helps you choose a margin based on your own scooter.
2. Set a conservative refill interval
Choose an interval shorter than the longest distance your records suggest. Leave a margin for a detour, queue, heavy traffic, climbing, strong wind, a passenger, luggage and a station that is closed or out of fuel. This is your personal operating rule, not an Aprilia range specification.
For a new scooter or a changed riding pattern, begin with frequent stops and lengthen the interval only after several consistent records. If the display reaches low sooner than your log predicts, trust the immediate indication and refuel; do not stretch the interval to match an earlier estimate.

3. Match the interval to the route
- Urban rides: Stations are usually easier to find, but idling and stop-start traffic can increase consumption. Refuel when convenient rather than waiting for the warning.
- Motorways and rural roads: Mark the next confirmed station before entering a long uninterrupted section. Do not assume every service area is open around the clock.
- Hills, wind or heavy loads: Shorten the interval because your recorded flat-road economy may not apply.
- Unfamiliar or remote routes: Start with a full tank and use the first reliable station that fits your route, preserving the reserve as a backup.
When two stations are possible, prefer the one earlier on the route if reaching the later one would require using reserve. A short stop is usually less disruptive than an unplanned roadside wait.

4. Check at planned breaks
Make fuel part of your route plan: check the display at each break, compare trip distance with your refill log and decide on the next stop before continuing. If the next station is beyond your normal conservative interval, stop at the current one.
Have a backup plan for a closure: identify another station in the same direction, or turn back while you still have a comfortable margin. Phone navigation can help locate stations, but it does not guarantee opening hours, fuel availability or easy access for a scooter.
5. Do not plan around the reserve
The manual’s approximately 1.5-litre reserve figure explains the tank specification; it does not promise that the scooter will travel a particular distance after the warning. Running repeatedly into reserve can leave you stranded when conditions differ from your log and can make the indication harder to interpret on slopes or uneven roads.

| Information source | Strength | Limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCD instrument panel | Available directly on the scooter while stopped | Fuel bars are estimates, not litre measurements | Immediate pre-ride and break-time checks |
| Aprilia Connectivity app | Can show fuel-level and trip information | The manual says the displayed fuel value may take at least three minutes to change | Reviewing a completed or longer trip, not live distance-to-empty decisions |
The manual recommends checking trips longer than three minutes for the app value to update. If the displayed value still does not change after that period, it directs you to contact a dealer. Do not use a stale app reading to stretch a fuel stop; use the scooter’s indication, your trip record and the nearest practical station.
The app and dashboard serve different purposes. The dashboard is the immediate reference when you are stopped with the scooter. The app can be useful for reviewing trip information later, but its delay means it should never be treated as a live warning system during a rapidly changing fuel situation.
Safe refueling procedure for the SXR 125
- Stop in a safe place, switch off the engine and keep flames, cigarettes and other ignition sources away from the filler area.
- Insert the key into the saddle lock, turn it anticlockwise and tip the seat forward.
- Turn the fuel cap anticlockwise and remove it.
- Add the specified unleaded petrol without overfilling. The manual specifies petrol up to E10 (95 RON).
- Replace and tighten the cap by turning it clockwise, then close and latch the seat.
- If petrol spills, stop the procedure and dry the spill promptly before restarting or riding.
The manual warns that ethanol content above 10% can damage fuel-system components or compromise engine performance. Do not mix oil into the petrol. Follow the fuel grade and procedure in the booklet supplied with your scooter if it differs for your market or model year.
Because the tank is beneath the seat, keep the seat fully open and stable while filling. Do not restart until the cap is secured, the seat is latched and any spilled petrol has been cleaned. If you smell persistent petrol after refueling, stop riding and arrange an inspection rather than attempting to estimate how far the remaining fuel will take you.
Troubleshooting an unexpected fuel indication
The gauge drops faster than usual
- Check whether the ride involved more traffic, hills, wind, high speed, a passenger or additional luggage.
- Verify tyre pressures and look for a fuel leak or a petrol smell around the tank and seat area.
- Refuel rather than attempting to recover a predicted range from the nominal seven-litre capacity.
- If the behavior persists under similar conditions, ask an Aprilia dealer to inspect the fuel system and level sender.
The warning appears immediately after filling
- Stop safely and confirm that the cap is correctly fitted and the seat is latched.
- Switch the ignition off and on once the scooter is stationary, then recheck the display.
- If the warning remains with adequate fuel, avoid relying on the gauge and arrange dealer diagnosis.
The app and dashboard disagree
Give the app at least the three-minute update period described in the manual, preferably while stationary or after a trip longer than three minutes. Until the values agree, use the lower-confidence reading conservatively: refuel at the next suitable station and have a dealer investigate a persistent mismatch.

The display reaches empty
Find a safe place to stop and refuel immediately. Do not treat the remaining fuel as a measured quantity, and do not assume the 1.5-litre reserve is still fully available. If the engine stops or you suspect a leak, do not continue riding; arrange roadside assistance and have the scooter inspected.
The indication changes after a slope or turn
Fuel movement can alter the apparent level temporarily. Stop on a safe, reasonably level surface and recheck rather than making a distance-to-empty calculation while moving. If the indication remains implausible after refueling and normal riding, dealer diagnosis is safer than replacing parts based on guesswork.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional equipment and route aids
Aprilia confirms a USB socket on the SXR 125, which can help keep a phone charged for navigation. A universal handlebar phone mount is an optional convenience, not a fuel-system requirement; check clearances and fitment for your particular model year before buying one. Keep route information secondary to safe riding and make fuel decisions while stopped.
If the display fails, the appropriate response is inspection by an Aprilia dealer. No particular replacement sensor or gauge part should be assumed compatible without verifying the scooter’s exact year and market.
What the available documents establish—and what they do not
The official Aprilia SXR 125 material establishes that the scooter’s LCD panel provides fuel information and also identifies a USB socket. The indexed manual copy supplies the approximate capacity, reserve and refueling instructions. It does not establish a model-wide kilometres-per-tank figure, a fixed distance after the warning, or a universal warning threshold for every production year.
Because the manual copy is hosted by a third party rather than Aprilia’s own download portal, its exact revision and publication date are not confirmed. Keep the manual that came with your scooter as the controlling reference, particularly for fuel specification, warning behavior and service procedures.
Quick pre-trip checklist
- Confirm the documents say SXR 125, not SR GT 125.
- Check the LCD fuel indication while stopped.
- Fill before a long or remote leg if the level is low.
- Reset or record the trip meter at the fill.
- Identify the next reliable station and a backup.
- Use your own refill log to apply a conservative interval.
- Leave margin for traffic, hills, weather, load and detours.
- Refuel before the display reaches empty; reserve is contingency only.
- Use only the fuel grade specified for your scooter, up to E10 (95 RON) according to the manual copy.
- After filling, secure the cap and seat and clean any spill before riding.
Frequently Asked Questions

How much reserve fuel remains when the warning appears?
The manual lists approximately 1.5 litres as the reserve portion, but it does not promise a fixed amount remaining at a particular warning moment or a guaranteed distance afterward.
How far can I ride before refueling?
No verified model-wide SXR 125 range is established. Record kilometres and litres over several refills, then choose a conservative interval with margin for traffic, hills, load, detours and station closures.
Can I use the Aprilia Connectivity app as a live fuel gauge?
Use it cautiously. The manual says the fuel value may take at least three minutes to update and recommends checking trips longer than three minutes. Use the scooter display and your refill plan for immediate decisions.
What petrol should I put in the SXR 125?
The manual copy specifies unleaded petrol up to E10 (95 RON) and warns that ethanol above 10% may damage fuel-system components or affect performance. Follow the booklet for your exact market and year.
Is the SR GT 125 fuel warning information valid for the SXR 125?
No. The SR GT 125 is a different model. Confirm the model and year on your documents before applying any gauge or warning instructions.
What should I do if the fuel display is wrong?
Refuel conservatively, do not rely on a predicted range, and have an Aprilia dealer inspect the level sender or fuel system if the warning, gauge or app remains inconsistent.
The Bottom Line
Identify the scooter as an SXR 125, read its LCD fuel indication only while stopped, and treat the display and the approximately 7-litre specification as planning aids—not precision measurements. Record every refill and trip distance, choose a conservative stop interval, and refuel before empty so the approximately 1.5-litre reserve remains a contingency rather than your route plan.
