Before you buy a used car, get its 17-character VIN from the seller, match it to the VIN on the vehicle, and search it in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup. The result tells you whether NHTSA currently lists an unrepaired recall for that specific VIN—not whether the car has ever been recalled or whether a future recall is impossible. If a recall is open, check the manufacturer’s instructions and ask the seller to arrange the free repair or provide written proof that it has been completed before you proceed.

Start with the VIN on the car, not just the listing

A VIN is a unique 17-character identifier assigned to a vehicle. It is the key to checking recall status for the particular car you are considering, rather than for a broad category of vehicles. Ask the seller for the VIN before you travel to see the car, then compare it with the number physically displayed on the vehicle. This helps ensure that you are checking the car being offered rather than a similar car, a copied listing, or a vehicle with a different history.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Do not treat a seller’s description, a listing badge, or a model-year search as a substitute for matching the VIN. Two cars of the same year, make, and model can have different reported recall statuses. The vehicle-specific search is useful only if the number entered actually belongs to the car you may buy.

Where to find the VIN

  • Look through the windshield at the lower-left corner of the dashboard.
  • Check the label inside the driver-side doorjamb.
  • Compare the number with the registration or insurance documents if they are available.

Read the number carefully and check that the characters match across the sources you can see. If the seller sends you a VIN remotely, confirm it again on the vehicle when you inspect it. If the seller will not provide a VIN or the number on the car does not match what you were given, pause the purchase process until the discrepancy is explained. Do not enter a number from an unrelated vehicle or rely on a year, make, and model search to verify a particular car.

Search the vehicle in NHTSA’s recall lookup

  1. Open NHTSA’s vehicle recall lookup. Enter the VIN you verified on the car. NHTSA also offers a license-plate search, which can be convenient if you have the plate information. For the clearest pre-purchase check, use the VIN physically matched to the vehicle.
  2. Review the result for that vehicle. A VIN or plate search is the vehicle-specific check. A year/make/model search can help you learn about recalls generally, but it does not establish the recall status of the individual car you are considering. Use the specific result, not a general list of campaigns, to decide what follow-up is needed.
  3. Note what the lookup says and when you searched. Record the result and date, especially if you are negotiating remotely or delivery is not immediate. NHTSA says affected VINs can be added continuously for some recently announced recalls, so a saved result is a record of what the database showed at that moment—not a guarantee that the status will remain unchanged.

NHTSA’s lookup is the official federal tool for checking reported unrepaired recalls. The lookup and the SaferCar alert app are free; you do not need to buy a scanner or pay for a VIN decoder to perform this recall check. An OBD-II scanner may read diagnostic information, and a VIN decoder may provide vehicle details, but neither is established as a way to confirm current unrepaired recall status. If a paid service presents recall information, do not let it replace checking the VIN directly in NHTSA’s lookup.

Understand what the result does—and does not—tell you

“0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN”

This is NHTSA’s displayed result when its lookup finds no unrepaired recalls associated with the VIN within the database’s scope at the time of the search. It is a useful answer to a narrow question: does the lookup currently show a recall that still needs repair for this vehicle? It is not a certificate that the car has never been recalled, and it is not a general guarantee that the vehicle is safe.

NHTSA’s VIN and plate searches focus on recalls that still need repair. A recall that has already been repaired will not appear as an open, unrepaired recall. So a zero result does not tell you whether the car had a recall in the past and had it fixed. It also cannot rule out a recall announced after your search, or one for which affected VINs have not yet all been identified.

An unrepaired recall is listed

Treat the listing as an issue to resolve before you commit. Read the recall information and any available instructions, then ask the seller whether the vehicle has already been repaired. If the seller says it has, ask for written repair documentation rather than relying only on a verbal assurance. For confirmation of the remedy and repair status, contact a dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer using the VIN.

A listing is not a reason to guess what work is needed or whether the car can safely be driven. The campaign determines the remedy and any interim safety instructions. Check those instructions with the manufacturer or its dealership, particularly if you are planning to drive the vehicle home after purchase. If the manufacturer says not to drive it or to park it outside, follow that guidance.

Why a clean result is not a complete lifetime record

NHTSA explains that its VIN lookup is focused on recalls that still need repair. Its results also have coverage limits. Some newly announced recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified. Recalls more than 15 years old are generally not shown unless the manufacturer offers broader coverage. Certain small-manufacturer recalls, non-safety campaigns, and international-vehicle recalls are excluded.

Those limits matter when interpreting a clean result: it means the lookup currently shows no unrepaired recall within its stated scope, not that no safety-related work has ever been needed or that no issue could be announced in the future. If you need broader information about a vehicle’s past, a vehicle history report may complement the recall check. It is not a substitute for the direct NHTSA lookup of current unrepaired recall status.

What to do if the used car has an open recall

  1. Read the manufacturer’s interim instructions. Some recalls include advice about whether to continue driving or where to park the vehicle. If the manufacturer says not to drive it or to park it outside, follow that guidance rather than treating the car as ready for normal use. Do not assume that an open recall is harmless just because the car appears to run normally.
  2. Confirm the remedy with a manufacturer’s dealership. Ask the dealership to check the VIN, explain the available remedy, and confirm how to arrange the repair. NHTSA directs consumers with open recalls to get the vehicle repaired for free at a local dealership for its manufacturer. The manufacturer’s campaign determines whether the remedy is a repair, replacement, refund, or, in rare cases, repurchase.
  3. Ask who will complete the repair and when. If the seller proposes to have it fixed, request written confirmation of the completed repair before finalizing the purchase or taking delivery. If the repair cannot be completed before the planned handover, decide whether you are willing to delay the purchase, make completion a condition of proceeding, or walk away. Getting the repair done before delivery is a practical purchase condition you can request; it is not a legal requirement established for every state or sale type.
  4. Keep the paperwork. Retain the repair record and any communication about interim safety instructions with the vehicle documents. If the seller says the recall has already been fixed, ask for the repair record and verify the status with the manufacturer’s dealership. If the work is still pending, make sure you understand who will arrange it and what you are being asked to accept before signing or taking possession.

NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Resources guidance tells consumers: “If you have an open recall, immediately get your vehicle repaired for FREE at a local dealership.” The free repair applies through a dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer. Do not assume every recall can be resolved by a quick repair, that an independent shop can provide the manufacturer’s campaign remedy, or that a promised repair has already been done. Confirm the specific remedy for the VIN.

Can a dealer sell a used car with an open recall?

The FTC’s December 15, 2016 Commission statement says federal law does not prohibit used-car dealers from selling used cars with open recalls across the industry. The FTC can act against false or misleading advertising that hides an open recall. That federal baseline is not a guarantee that every seller has disclosed everything, and it should not be read as a rule for every state or every type of sale: state requirements and transaction details may differ.

As a practical purchase condition, you can ask the seller to complete the recall repair and provide written documentation before you proceed. You can also ask for a delay while the repair is arranged or decide not to buy the car. Those are purchase choices and negotiation options, not legal requirements established for every state and sale. If you believe a seller misrepresented the car or you need to know which rules apply locally, contact your state attorney general or consumer-protection authority.

Keep the distinction clear when evaluating a seller’s answer: whether a dealer may sell a vehicle under a general federal baseline is different from whether a particular advertisement or statement was misleading, and different again from whether state-specific requirements apply. If you are uncertain about a seller’s claim, verify the recall and repair status with the manufacturer’s dealership and seek guidance from the relevant state consumer-protection office.

Check again close to delivery

NHTSA says affected VINs may be added continuously for some recently announced recalls and recommends recurring checks. If there is a delay between your first search and the handover, run the VIN again shortly before you take delivery. This matters even when the earlier result was clean: the first search reflects the database at that time, not a permanent status.

NHTSA recommends checking for recalls at least twice a year for vehicles you own. For a one-time purchase, the practical equivalent is to search during your evaluation and repeat the search near handover if time has passed. If the second search produces a different result, stop and review the new recall information and the manufacturer’s instructions before deciding whether to complete the purchase.

Choose the right check for the job

Check Best use What it establishes
NHTSA VIN lookup Pre-purchase check of a specific vehicle Reported unrepaired recalls associated with the VIN within the lookup’s scope at the time of the search.
NHTSA license-plate search Lookup when using a plate is more convenient A vehicle-specific recall result through NHTSA’s plate-search option; verify the car and result before relying on it for a purchase.
Year/make/model search General research about recalls affecting a model General recall information, not confirmation of the individual vehicle’s status.
SaferCar app Ongoing alerts for vehicles or equipment you enter NHTSA recall alerts for entered items. NHTSA says the app stores the vehicle, VIN, and equipment information on the user’s device.

For a single car you are evaluating, the direct VIN lookup is the practical starting point. The plate option is another NHTSA vehicle-specific route, while a model search is background information only. SaferCar is useful for ongoing monitoring after you have entered a vehicle or equipment; NHTSA says the entered vehicle, VIN, and equipment information is stored on the user’s device. The app is free, just like the lookup.

A vehicle history report can be useful for broader purchase research, but it should complement—not replace—the direct NHTSA VIN check. FTC buyer guidance points consumers to vehicle-history-report information as part of used-car shopping. Use such a report for the broader history questions it covers, and use NHTSA’s lookup for the current reported unrepaired recall status. No separate product is necessary to do the core recall check.

Why the check is worth doing even on a well-kept car

Recalls are common enough that a careful buyer should check every specific vehicle rather than assume that age, condition, or a seller’s confidence settles the question. A car may look well maintained and still have an unrepaired safety recall; the visual condition of the vehicle is not a substitute for checking its VIN.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025. In 2025, NHTSA also reported that 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls in 2024 affected more than 29.3 million vehicles. These totals show why a current VIN check matters, but they do not measure the odds that any one used car has an open recall. The only useful way to answer that question for the car you are considering is to check its specific VIN.

Pre-purchase recall checklist

  • Get the VIN from the seller and match it to the windshield or driver-side doorjamb.
  • Search the VIN in NHTSA’s lookup; use a plate search only as an alternative vehicle-specific lookup.
  • Read any result as an unrepaired-recall status within the database’s scope, not a full recall history or general safety guarantee.
  • If a recall is open, follow manufacturer safety instructions and confirm the remedy with a manufacturer’s dealership.
  • Ask for written proof if the seller says the repair is complete, and verify it with the manufacturer’s dealership.
  • Consider making completed repair and written documentation a condition of proceeding; this is a practical request, not a universal legal rule.
  • Repeat the search near delivery if time has passed since the first check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a used car for recalls by VIN?

Get the vehicle’s 17-character VIN from the seller, confirm it matches the number on the car, then enter it in NHTSA’s vehicle recall lookup. The VIN result shows reported unrepaired recalls within the lookup’s scope at the time you search. NHTSA also offers a license-plate search.

Where can I find the VIN on a used car?

Look at the lower-left corner of the dashboard through the windshield or at the label inside the driver-side doorjamb. You can also compare it with registration or insurance documents if available. Make sure the VIN you search matches the car being offered.

What does “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” mean?

It means NHTSA’s lookup currently shows no unrepaired recalls associated with that VIN within the database’s scope. It does not show repaired recalls, provide a complete lifetime recall history, or guarantee that a recall will not be announced or added later.

What should I do if a used car has an open recall?

Read the manufacturer’s interim safety instructions and contact a dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer to confirm the remedy and arrange repair. NHTSA says open-recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership. Ask the seller for written proof if they say the repair is complete, and consider making documented completion a condition of purchase.

Can a used-car dealer sell a car with an open recall?

State-specific requirements and transaction details may differ; check with your state attorney general or consumer-protection authority if you have a dispute.

Should I check again after the first search?

Yes, if time passes before delivery. NHTSA says affected VINs may be added continuously for some recently announced recalls and recommends recurring checks. Run the VIN again shortly before taking delivery if your initial check was not recent.

The Bottom Line

Match the car’s VIN to the number on the vehicle, check it directly in NHTSA’s recall lookup, and read the result as current unrepaired-recall status—not a complete lifetime history. If a recall appears, follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions, confirm the free remedy with its dealership, and get written repair documentation before proceeding if possible. Recheck close to delivery if time has passed.
