Before paying a private seller, run an official lien or security-interest search using the vehicle identification number (VIN) through the registry for the jurisdiction where the car is titled. Match that VIN to the car and title, search again immediately before closing, save the dated result, and stop the sale if a lender or other secured party appears until the interest is released and the title authority confirms the transfer procedure.
Why a lien check is essential in a private sale
A lien is a creditor’s legal interest in a vehicle, usually because a loan or other debt has not been fully satisfied. A broader security interest can have a similar practical effect. If you buy a car with an active interest still recorded, the creditor may be able to block a clean title transfer or, in some jurisdictions, repossess the vehicle even though you paid the seller.

The seller’s statement that a loan was paid off is not enough by itself. Records can lag, a release may not have been filed, or the seller may be mistaken about which state, province, territory or country controls the title. A registry search is evidence of what the applicable authority recorded for a particular identifier at a particular time; it is not a universal guarantee that no claim exists anywhere.

There is no single worldwide lien database. The correct search depends on where the vehicle is titled, not simply where you meet the seller. The examples below illustrate different systems rather than one interchangeable process.

Find the right registry before you search
Start by asking the seller where the vehicle is currently titled. Then locate that jurisdiction’s official motor-vehicle, title or personal-property-security registry. A vehicle that moved across a state, province or national border may require an additional check of its earlier title jurisdiction.

These examples are not substitutes for the registry in your vehicle’s actual titling jurisdiction. If the seller cannot tell you where the title is held, treat that as a reason to pause rather than guessing which database to use.
Verify the VIN before entering it
A search is only as useful as the identifier supplied. Get the VIN from the seller, then inspect the vehicle and documents yourself.

Check the plate or stamping visible on the dashboard, door area or other manufacturer-approved location. Use a flashlight and photograph it if permitted.
- Compare every character with the title or ownership document. A single transposed letter or number can return a clear result for a different car.
- Check the seller’s paperwork. The VIN should match the title, registration material and any loan or release documents. Do not rely on a typed VIN from a text message when you can verify the physical vehicle.
- Use the format accepted by the registry. Australian PPSR searches use a VIN or chassis number. Some systems reject invalid VIN characters or require a particular length. Wisconsin specifically cautions users about valid VIN characters.
- Stop on a mismatch. Ask the seller to explain and correct the discrepancy through the title authority before you spend money. Do not “try another VIN” to obtain a clean result.
Run the official search close to payment
Use the registry’s own website or service counter, not a seller-provided screenshot. Enter the verified VIN exactly as displayed and select the search type for a vehicle title, lienholder or security interest.

- Open the title jurisdiction’s official registry. Confirm that the service covers the vehicle’s current title location and note any limits on public information.
- Enter the VIN or chassis number. Review the characters on the confirmation screen before submitting. Where a service offers exact and exact-and-similar searches, understand which one you are ordering; an exact search is tied to the precise VIN you entered.
- Read the complete result. Look for an active lien, secured party, financing statement, registration number, status date, expiry date or instructions to obtain a certificate. “No result” can have a different meaning from “clear title” depending on the system.
- Download or print the certificate. Save the PDF, printout or confirmation page with the date, time, VIN and transaction paperwork. The Australian PPSR states that its search certificate can serve as a record of the result.
- Repeat if the deal changes. Run the relevant search again if the seller changes, the VIN or title information is corrected, the payment date moves, or the transaction is delayed.
Search timing matters because interests can be registered after an earlier check. Arizona’s Motor Vehicle Division states, “New liens are added daily.” The Australian Government PPSR gives the same practical advice in more detail: “You should do a PPSR search on the day or the day before you intend to buy a car – the closer you search to the time of purchase the better.”
Understand what a result establishes
When an active lien or security interest appears
Treat a matching active registration as an unresolved encumbrance. It means the registry has associated a creditor or secured party with the vehicle identifier at the time of the search. Do not hand the seller the full purchase price merely because the seller says the loan was paid earlier.
Ask the named secured party, using independently verified contact details, for the current payoff amount and the exact release process. Then ask the title authority what evidence it will accept and how the title will be transferred. Keep both answers in writing. The seller may need to pay the creditor directly, obtain a formal release, and provide a title or electronic record that the authority recognizes.

A no-record response is useful but limited. It is tied to the VIN or chassis number, the registry searched and the date and time of the query. It may not cover an interest filed in another jurisdiction, a filing error, a recently submitted record, or a claim the registry does not record.

Wisconsin warns that its public search may not identify an individual lienholder and recommends checking its title-transfer search if no lien record appears. Australia’s PPSR also explains that its vehicle search does not provide the amount of finance owing. A clear result therefore does not replace a correct title review and a properly documented transfer.
When the result is incomplete or confusing
Save the result and contact the registry before closing. Ask whether the response is an official certificate, a preliminary lookup, or only a pointer to another service. If the VIN is valid but the result names a different owner, vehicle description or jurisdiction, stop and resolve the discrepancy. Do not infer that an unfamiliar status is harmless.
Resolve a lien before money changes hands
The safest private-sale arrangement is one in which the secured party’s interest is cleared as part of the closing, with the title authority’s requirements known in advance.
- Confirm the creditor. Use the name and contact information in the official result. Ask what balance is required to release the interest and whether payment must be made directly to the creditor.
- Confirm the release document. Find out whether the creditor issues a paper lien release, updates an electronic title record, or both. Ask how long the update takes and what identifying details must appear. Indiana, for example, requires written lien-release documentation containing owner and vehicle identifiers.
- Confirm the title authority’s acceptance rules. Ask the motor-vehicle or title agency whether it requires an original release, an electronic update, a replacement title, a signed authorization or another document. Requirements differ by jurisdiction.
- Structure payment around verification. If the creditor must be paid first, use a payment method and sequence that lets you document the payoff and receive the accepted release. Do not give the seller unrestricted full payment while relying on a future promise.
- Check the updated record. After payoff or release, obtain the updated title, electronic confirmation or official certificate required by the jurisdiction. If the registry has not updated, ask the authority how to proceed before taking possession.
- Complete the transfer and registration. Follow local signing, tax, registration and plate rules. Keep the bill of sale, title, lien release, search certificate, payment records and communications together.
Arizona’s guidance says a current lien must be paid off or the lienholder must give written permission before title transfer. That rule is Arizona-specific; another jurisdiction may require a different release or electronic process.

Jurisdiction-specific details to check
Arizona
For a vehicle titled in Arizona, use the Arizona MVD title viewer. The agency notes that new liens are added daily, so an old printout is not a safe closing document. If a current lien is shown, obtain payoff and release instructions from the lienholder or the written permission required for the transfer. Arizona also describes electronic lien and title processing, so ask whether the release will appear electronically rather than arriving as a paper title.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin DOT provides a VIN-based lienholder search. A blank public result does not necessarily identify every possible creditor, and the public service may not display an individual lienholder’s name. Follow the agency’s direction to check the title-transfer search when no record appears, then ask DOT what documentation is needed for the specific title.
Indiana
Indiana BMV requires lienholders to release their interest before a sale. Its written release requirements include owner and vehicle identifiers. Obtain the release in the form the BMV accepts and make sure the names, VIN and other details match the title exactly before submitting the transfer.

Australia
The Australian Government PPSR vehicle search accepts a VIN or chassis number and provides a search certificate. The listed self-service price is AUD $2, accessed in 2026; that fee should not be generalized to other countries or registries. The PPSR says the search does not reveal how much finance remains and recommends searching on the day or day before purchase. Its buyer-protection guidance warns that a registered interest can expose a private buyer to repossession risk, so resolve the registration before completing the purchase.

Ontario
Ontario’s official PPSR help service describes a motor-vehicle enquiry by VIN. It offers exact and exact-and-similar search options and lets you order a certificate or printout. Use the result alongside the Ontario title and transfer process, and ask the provincial authority how a named secured party must release its interest.
Do not substitute a history report for the lien search
A vehicle-history report can add information about events such as reported damage or registration history, but it is a separate service and should not replace the official lien or security-interest record. A Georgia consumer guide recommends a VIN lien check and cautions that vehicle-history reports may not contain complete information.
Likewise, a VIN scanner can help you read the identifier accurately, but it does not query a title or security registry. The official registry search, title review and release documentation remain the parts that address the creditor’s recorded interest.
Cross-border vehicles and earlier titles
If the car was previously titled in another state, province, territory or country, ask the current title authority whether an earlier-jurisdiction search is required. A current registry may not reproduce every historical filing from elsewhere. Compare import, export and prior-title documents with the VIN and ask for evidence that any earlier lien was released.
Do not assume that a clean result in the seller’s location covers a car titled elsewhere. The registry’s geographic scope is part of what the result establishes.
Closing-day checklist
- Vehicle VIN physically inspected and matched character-for-character to the title and seller’s documents.
- Current title jurisdiction identified.
- Official lien or security-interest search completed close to payment.
- Certificate, PDF or dated printout saved.
- Any named secured party contacted independently.
- Payoff amount and payment destination confirmed.
- Release format and timing confirmed with the title authority.
- Title-transfer, registration and tax requirements understood.
- Payment withheld or structured until the required release and transfer evidence is available.
- Search repeated if the closing date, VIN, seller or payment arrangement changes.
Warning signs that justify walking away
- The seller refuses to provide the VIN or will not let you compare it with the vehicle.
- The title VIN differs from the dashboard or door VIN.
- The seller insists that a screenshot from an unknown website is sufficient.
- A creditor appears, but the seller will not permit direct confirmation of payoff and release terms.
- The seller demands full payment before the lien is released or the title authority confirms the transfer.
- The registry result is from the wrong jurisdiction or is too old for the planned closing.
- The seller cannot explain why the title, registration and identity documents name different people.
Any one of these issues can have an innocent explanation, but you should resolve it through the secured party and title authority before proceeding. If the explanation cannot be documented, the risk belongs with the buyer if the deal goes ahead.
