Yes—you can usually verify whether the exact car you found online is at a dealership before you drive there. Use the vehicle identification number (VIN) or stock number, contact the specific dealership shown on the listing, and ask a staff member to check that exact record. Confirm three separate facts: where the vehicle is physically located, whether you can see and drive it, and the written out-the-door price.
Do not treat an online listing, an automated inventory page, or an earlier phone call as a permanent guarantee. Individual vehicle status can change quickly. Reconfirm shortly before leaving, particularly when the trip is long or the car is marked in transit, offsite, reserved, or on hold.

- Call that exact dealership or use its official contact or chat option. Ask a person to search the current inventory record by VIN or stock number.
- Ask whether the exact vehicle is physically at that location today and available for you to see and test-drive.
- Ask whether it is sold, reserved, on hold, in transit, or at another location. If it is not on the lot, obtain its current location and estimated arrival.
- Request the complete out-the-door price in writing before you travel.
- Reconfirm the vehicle’s location, status, appointment, and price immediately before departure.
This process separates an online listing from the facts that matter for your visit: the identity of one specific car, its physical location, your ability to inspect it, and the total amount you would be asked to pay.

Why an online listing is not proof the car is on the lot
Inventory systems can show vehicles that are not currently parked at the dealership. A car may be in transit from a port or distribution center, stored at another dealer, undergoing preparation, or already subject to a sale or reservation. Some systems update automatically or take time to reflect a deposit, trade, transfer, or completed sale.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recognizes that a dealer may advertise an offsite or in-transit vehicle when the advertisement clearly discloses that location status. That is different from presenting an unavailable car as though it were ready for immediate inspection. The FTC’s Price Transparency Automobile Industry FAQs, FAQ 10, states: “Advertising a car that is no longer available just to draw consumers to the dealership is a deceptive tactic the FTC Act prohibits.”
For your trip, “listed online” is therefore only the starting point. You need a dealer-confirmed answer about the exact VIN or stock number, not a promise that a similar trim exists somewhere in the dealer group.

Before contacting the dealer, create a small record of the listing. Screenshots are useful because listings can change while you are arranging a visit.
Record these identifiers
- VIN: The 17-character vehicle identification number is the strongest way to distinguish one car from another.
- Stock number: Dealers often use an internal stock number to locate a vehicle faster than a model description.
- Year, make, model, and trim: Include drivetrain, body style, and major packages when shown.
- Color and mileage: These help catch a mismatch if the representative opens a different record.
- Advertised price and listing number: Save the displayed price, discounts, and any labels such as “in transit” or “sale pending.”
- Dealer identity and address: A manufacturer search may display several stores or route an inquiry to a nearby dealer, so note the exact location.
If the listing does not display a VIN, ask the dealer for the stock number or another unique identifier. Do not assume that two vehicles with the same model and trim are interchangeable; equipment, mileage, price, and location can differ.
Contact the dealership that controls the listing
Use the phone number, contact form, or chat function on the official dealer site or the manufacturer’s inventory portal. Manufacturer portals can route an inquiry to a dealer. The objective is not merely to generate a lead; it is to have a person check the live record for one vehicle.
What to say at the start
Give the representative the VIN or stock number immediately:

“I am calling about VIN [the VIN] / stock number [the stock number], the [year, model, trim] shown at your [city] location. Could you check the current record for that exact vehicle?”
Using the identifier prevents a common mix-up in which a representative confirms that the dealership has the same model but not the car you found.
Ask for a physical-location answer
Use a question that requires a clear yes or no:
“Is this exact vehicle physically at this location today and available for me to see?”
Then ask, “Can I view and test-drive that exact car?” A vehicle can be physically present but unavailable for a test drive because it is being inspected, awaiting repair, blocked in storage, or committed to another buyer. “At the dealership” and “available for my visit” are separate confirmations.

Ask the representative to describe the status in plain language rather than relying on a generic “available” label.

Dealer terminology is not standardized. If a representative uses “available” without saying where the car is and whether it is committed to someone else, ask the physical-location and purchase-availability questions again.
How to handle an in-transit vehicle
An in-transit listing can be legitimate, but it cannot answer the immediate question, “Can I see this car today?” Ask where it is now, the estimated arrival date, and whether the dealer will notify you when it arrives.

Also ask whether it is available for purchase after arrival. FTC guidance says an in-transit vehicle should be available for purchase after it arrives and should not already be allocated to fulfill another consumer’s paid order. A plainly disclosed in-transit status does not make a vehicle available for an inspection before arrival, and an arrival estimate is not a guarantee.
Request the answers in writing by email or text. If the dealer cannot identify the current location, gives only a vague “soon” estimate, or says the vehicle is already assigned to another customer, treat it as unavailable for your planned visit.
Get the out-the-door price before you leave
Availability and price are separate checks. Ask for the complete out-the-door total in writing, not just the advertised price, a monthly payment, or an estimated payment range. The FTC’s Buying a Used Car from a Dealer guidance recommends requesting an out-the-door price before visiting. The written figure can help you check the advertised price, confirm that the dealer is discussing the vehicle on the lot, and identify added charges.
Request a line-item quote
Use wording such as:
“Please email the out-the-door price for VIN [the VIN], including the selling price, dealer fees, required government charges, taxes, registration, and every mandatory add-on. Please identify any optional product separately.”
Ask the dealer to state which discounts are included and what conditions apply. A price that requires financing, a trade-in, military eligibility, residency, or a dealer-installed package is not the same as an unconditional advertised price. If a fee or add-on appears for the first time at the dealership, compare it with the written quote and ask for an explanation before signing anything.

For a private cash buyer, the most useful document is a written total tied to the VIN or stock number and dated close to the visit. Taxes and registration can depend on your address, so the quote should identify the assumptions used rather than pretending every buyer pays the same amount.
Reconfirm shortly before departure
Once you have a confirmed appointment, call again before leaving. Ask the representative to recheck the VIN and state:

- the vehicle is still physically at the dealership;
- it is still available for your inspection and test drive;
- the appointment is noted for the correct vehicle, not a similar one; and
- the written out-the-door quote remains current.
This final call is practical risk control, not a quoted FTC requirement. A vehicle can be sold, transferred, damaged, or placed on hold between your first conversation and your departure. If the drive is several hours, make the call close enough to departure that a new transaction is unlikely to make your trip pointless.
When the answers conflict or the dealer is evasive
The listing says “available,” but the representative cannot find it
Read back the VIN and stock number from your screenshot. Ask whether the listing belongs to a different store, has not updated, or refers to a vehicle that was sold. Request a written explanation and do not substitute another vehicle unless you independently choose to do so.
The dealer confirms a similar car, not the exact one
Ask the representative to identify the VIN, mileage, trim, and price of the substitute. Compare those details with your saved listing. A similar model is a new purchase decision, not confirmation that the original car is available.
You are told the car is on hold
Ask who placed the hold, whether it is backed by a deposit or paid order, when it expires, and whether you can inspect the vehicle. Hold and deposit policies are dealer-specific; there is no universal rule in the reviewed official guidance that makes a hold refundable or guarantees that a vehicle will be reserved for you.
The dealer will not provide a written total
Ask whether the refusal is caused by missing tax or registration information and provide your ZIP code if needed. If the dealer still will not identify mandatory charges or ties the price to an undisclosed condition, you can postpone the trip and contact another store. A monthly payment alone does not tell you the vehicle’s total cost.
The car is advertised after being sold
Ask the dealer to correct or remove the listing. FTC guidance treats advertising a car that is no longer available merely to draw consumers to the dealership as deceptive. That does not guarantee a particular remedy for an individual shopper, but it is a reason to document the listing, the VIN, the time of your call, and the representative’s response.

- Is this exact VIN physically at your stated location today?
- Is it available for me to see and test-drive?
- Is it sold, reserved, on hold, in transit, offsite, or pending preparation?
- If it is not on the lot, where is it now and what is the estimated arrival?
- Will it be available for purchase after arrival, rather than allocated to another paid order?
- What is the written out-the-door price, including all mandatory fees and add-ons?
- Who should I ask for when I arrive, and when should I call to reconfirm?
Save the reply with the date and time. A written response does not freeze inventory, but it gives you a clearer record of what the dealer represented and helps prevent misunderstandings at the store.
Compare candidate listings by decision-critical facts
If several cars meet your needs, compare them using facts that affect whether a visit is worthwhile rather than sorting only by headline price.

What a VIN decoder or history report can—and cannot—do
A VIN decoder can help identify a vehicle’s year, model, or equipment, and a history report can address accidents, title events, or service records. Neither establishes the dealer’s current inventory status. Only the dealership controlling the listing can confirm whether the exact vehicle is physically present, committed to another buyer, ready for a test drive, or still in transit.
Know the limits of a confirmation
A dealer’s confirmation is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the vehicle will remain available until you arrive. It also does not guarantee that the quoted price will apply if the quote was conditional, expired, or changed by a disclosed program. Ask what assumptions are attached to the price and whether the vehicle can be sold before your appointment.
Likewise, a deposit or hold is not automatically transferable, refundable, or binding on every dealer. If you are considering paying to reserve a car, obtain the dealer’s written terms before sending money, including the amount, expiration, refund conditions, and what happens if the vehicle arrives with a different condition or price.
A practical go/no-go decision
- Go: The VIN or stock number matches, the vehicle is physically at the stated dealership, the representative confirms that you can see and drive it, and you have a written price with clear conditions.
- Delay: The car is in transit, offsite, or awaiting preparation, but the dealer provides a credible location, timing estimate, and written statement that it remains available after arrival.
- Do not make the trip for that listing: The vehicle is sold, allocated to another paid order, unavailable for viewing, impossible for the dealer to locate, or accompanied by a price the dealer will not explain in writing.
When a listing passes the identity, location, access, status, price, and final reconfirmation checks, you have done the practical work available before visiting. You can then travel knowing which vehicle you are going to see and what the dealer has represented about its availability and total price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I confirm dealer stock without calling?
You can start with the manufacturer’s or dealer’s online inventory and use its contact or chat feature, but an online listing alone cannot establish the vehicle’s current physical location or sale status. Ask a dealership representative to verify the VIN or stock number.
What if the dealer says the car is available but it is not there when I arrive?
Show the written confirmation, ask for an explanation, and decide whether another vehicle is acceptable only on your terms. Document the listing and conversation; do not assume you must buy a substitute.
Should I pay a deposit to make sure the car is held?
Only after you receive the dealer’s written hold terms, including duration, refund conditions, and whether the vehicle remains available at the quoted price. Hold and deposit rules are dealer-specific, not universal.
