The most reliable way to check a BMW i3’s battery health is to ask a BMW Service Partner for a Battery Health Quick Report or an ISTA high-voltage battery diagnostic. For a quick screening check, read the battery-management system (BMS) through a compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapter and BMW-capable app. Use the official BMW result for a warranty claim or an expensive used-car purchase; treat an app reading as an indication, not a certification.
What “battery health” means on a BMW i3
Several battery figures are commonly confused. They answer different questions, so identify the one you are looking at before judging an i3.

State of charge (SoC)
State of charge is how full the pack is right now. It changes every time you drive or charge. BMW displays SoC in the instrument cluster and in the My BMW App under Check Status. A reading of 80% SoC does not mean the battery has retained 80% of its original capacity; it means the battery is approximately 80% full at that moment.

State of health is the battery’s current maximum energy capacity compared with its condition when new. It is the number that matters when you are assessing degradation. A pack reporting 85% SoH can still show 100% SoC after charging, but it will hold less energy than it did when new.

Remaining capacity
Remaining capacity is the measured or calculated amount of energy the pack can store now. A tool may show it as a percentage, amp-hours (Ah), gross kilowatt-hours (kWh), or net/usable kWh. Always identify the unit and compare it with the correct i3 battery generation. A generic “i3 capacity” figure can produce a misleading result because BMW sold the car with three materially different packs.

Do not use a dashboard range estimate as a battery-health test. Range is affected by temperature, speed, tire pressure, terrain, heating or air-conditioning use and recent driving history. It can support your investigation, but it cannot replace an SoH measurement.
Method 1: Get BMW’s Battery Health Quick Report
Request the report from a BMW Service Partner when the result could affect the price of a car, a warranty claim or a major repair decision. BMW directs customers with residual-capacity questions to a Service Partner because the test is tied to the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the applicable battery configuration.
Before booking
- Have the complete VIN and the vehicle’s model year available.
- Tell the service adviser that you want a high-voltage battery health or residual-capacity measurement, not only a routine fault-code scan.
- Ask whether the location offers the Battery Health Quick Report for your i3 and whether there is a charge.
- Ask what the delivered report will show: numerical SoH, residual capacity, the test date and the baseline battery generation.
- For a purchase, arrange for the report to be performed before signing or paying a non-refundable deposit.
What to collect from the report
Keep a copy showing the VIN, test date, numerical result and the unit used. If the report gives only a percentage, ask which original-capacity reference was used. If it gives Ah or kWh, ask whether the value is gross or net/usable. Those details determine whether a comparison is valid.
When this method is worth the expense
The Quick Report is the sensible choice when a small testing fee could prevent a large mistake. It is particularly important for an older i3 with unexpectedly short range, a charging complaint, a high-voltage warning or a result close to a contractual or warranty threshold. A dealer’s verbal statement that the battery is “fine” is not equivalent to a dated, VIN-specific measurement.

Method 2: Have a workshop run BMW ISTA diagnostics
ISTA is BMW’s professional diagnostic system. BMW technical material identifies an ISTA test plan for analysing high-voltage battery SoC and SoH, and BMW service information specifies preparation requirements for the analysis. This is the appropriate path when a fault is present or the result may determine warranty coverage.
What the workshop does
- The technician identifies the car by VIN and connects the approved diagnostic equipment.
- ISTA reads the high-voltage battery-management system and runs the applicable SoC/SoH analysis test plan.
- The vehicle is prepared according to BMW’s procedure. That can include a defined period at rest before the measurement; ask the workshop how it will meet the procedure for your model and software level.
- The technician checks relevant high-voltage fault codes and charging-system information rather than interpreting the capacity value in isolation.
- You receive the result and, where applicable, a diagnosis of whether a defect or capacity loss meets the terms of the applicable warranty.
Do not try to recreate a professional ISTA result by buying an unofficial copy of diagnostic software or by clearing codes before the appointment. Clearing codes can remove useful evidence, and work on the high-voltage system should be left to trained personnel.

A compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapter and a BMW-capable app can expose values reported by the i3’s BMS. The workflow is useful for screening a prospective purchase, tracking a car over time or deciding whether to book a professional test. It is not a BMW-certified capacity test, and the displayed percentage may depend on the app’s interpretation of the BMS data.
What you need
- A reputable Bluetooth OBD-II adapter that explicitly supports your phone’s operating system.
- A BMW-capable app, such as an app in the BimmerLink/BimmerCode ecosystem, with support for your i3 generation.
- The correct i3 profile selected in the app.
- A phone with sufficient battery and a stable Bluetooth connection.
Compatibility is not universal. An adapter that works with one phone or BMW model may fail with another. Check the app’s current compatibility information before buying hardware, and avoid assuming that a generic OBD reader can access high-voltage battery data.
Step-by-step screening procedure
- Park safely, switch the car off and follow the adapter manufacturer’s instructions for connecting to the OBD-II port.
- Turn the vehicle on without driving and pair the adapter with the phone. Grant only the permissions the app requires.
- Open the BMW-capable app and select the exact i3 model or battery profile. A wrong profile can produce missing or implausible values.
- Open the battery-management or high-voltage section and locate the reported SoH, remaining capacity or equivalent BMS value.
- Record the date, outside temperature, displayed SoC, odometer reading and the exact units shown. Save a screenshot or export if the app permits it.
- Read and save any high-voltage fault codes before clearing anything. Do not erase codes simply to make the dashboard look clean.
- Disconnect the adapter when finished. Leaving some adapters plugged in can drain the 12-volt battery.
How to make repeated readings more useful
Use the same adapter, app version, i3 profile and recording format each time. Compare readings taken under broadly similar conditions, especially SoC and temperature. A single unusually high or low value is a reason to verify the setup and arrange a professional test, not proof that the battery changed suddenly.

These are published nominal or gross figures, not a promise that a scan will display the same number. The usable energy available to the driver is lower than gross energy, and software, reserve buffers and measurement conditions affect displayed values. Confirm the model year, battery option and the meaning of the value shown by your tool before doing any arithmetic.
Interpret an SoH or capacity result correctly
- Verify the identity. Match the VIN and confirm the i3 battery generation. A wrong vehicle profile invalidates the comparison.
- Write down the unit. Percent, Ah, gross kWh and net/usable kWh are not interchangeable without knowing the reference and conversion method.
- Match the baseline. Compare a 60Ah car with the 60Ah reference, a 94Ah car with the 94Ah reference and a 120Ah car with the 120Ah reference.
- Record the conditions. Note test date, outside temperature and displayed SoC. Include whether the reading came from BMW’s report, ISTA or a consumer app.
- Check the rest of the evidence. Review high-voltage fault codes, charging behaviour, charging interruptions and real-world range separately. A capacity number cannot explain every charging fault.
- Escalate borderline results. If a DIY value is near a warranty threshold or would change the purchase decision, obtain the BMW report and have the Service Partner confirm the applicable coverage.
BMW states that, because of the technical design of a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, capacity decreases over time and with use. That statement describes normal degradation; it does not establish a universal pass/fail percentage for every i3 model year. BMW’s published material does not provide one universal i3 threshold that can be applied to every market and battery generation.
What a low reading does—and does not—tell you
A low SoH value is not the same as an immediate breakdown
A battery can continue to operate with reduced capacity, although the car will have less available range. The practical effect depends on your daily distance, charging access and weather. A lower number becomes a financial and reliability concern when it is accompanied by rapid range loss, charging faults, warning messages or a value close to a coverage threshold.
A normal-looking range estimate does not prove high SoH
The i3’s range estimate is based on recent energy consumption and environmental conditions. Gentle city driving can make the estimate look reassuring, while cold weather or sustained high-speed driving can make a healthy pack look weak. Use range as a symptom to investigate, not as the measurement itself.

Fault codes need separate attention
An SoH value can look acceptable while a charging component, temperature sensor, cell-monitoring circuit or 12-volt system has a fault. Conversely, a warning may be caused by a system issue rather than by uniform capacity loss. A BMW diagnostic session can correlate the capacity result with stored high-voltage faults.

BMW USA publishes an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery defect warranty in the cited United States materials. BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned capacity-loss protection page describes a below-75% SoH threshold for qualifying 2022–2025 BMW Certified EVs with specified retail-delivery dates. That CPO language should not be applied automatically to an older i3, a non-CPO vehicle or a car sold in another country.
How to verify your coverage
- Look up the vehicle in the My BMW App or My BMW portal, using the correct market account.
- Ask a BMW Service Partner to confirm the in-service date, battery warranty terms and any capacity-loss provision attached to the VIN.
- Ask which SoH test BMW requires for a claim and whether a Quick Report or ISTA result is needed.
- Keep the dated diagnostic report, repair order and any charging or warning evidence.
Do not authorize a battery replacement solely because an app shows a percentage below a number found online. Coverage depends on the exact VIN, market, vehicle status, in-service date and warranty wording, as well as the approved diagnostic result.
Buying a used BMW i3: a practical battery-health checklist
- Identify the battery generation from the VIN and vehicle records, not only the seller’s advertised range.
- Request a current BMW Battery Health Quick Report or arrange an ISTA check before completing the purchase.
- Obtain the numerical result, test date, unit and baseline used for the calculation.
- Scan for high-voltage fault codes and inspect charging operation on both AC charging and the vehicle’s normal charging equipment.
- Compare the result with your required daily range in the coldest and hottest conditions you expect, rather than with a generic online range figure.
- Verify remaining warranty or CPO coverage by VIN and confirm whether it transfers to you.
- If the seller refuses an independent diagnostic, price the car as an unverified battery and account for the possibility of professional testing after purchase.
A report is most valuable when it is recent. A battery can continue to age after a previous test, and a report from another i3 cannot be substituted for the car you are buying.
Troubleshoot an implausible OBD result
The app shows no battery-health value
Confirm that the adapter is powered, Bluetooth permission is enabled, the correct i3 profile is selected and the app supports your operating system. Generic OBD readers often expose engine-style data but not the i3’s high-voltage BMS values. If the value remains unavailable, use a BMW Service Partner rather than repeatedly changing settings at random.

The percentage changes dramatically between scans
Check whether SoC, not SoH, is being displayed. Recheck the unit, temperature and selected vehicle profile, and repeat the reading with the same adapter and app. A large unexplained change warrants an ISTA or Quick Report measurement.
The value seems higher or lower than the advertised battery size
Determine whether the app reports gross energy, net/usable energy, an Ah estimate or a percentage derived from a software reference. Compare only like units and the correct 60Ah, 94Ah or 120Ah baseline. Do not force a conversion from a number whose definition the app does not disclose.
A warning appears while scanning
Stop treating the app as a capacity experiment and arrange professional diagnosis. Save the displayed codes and conditions, avoid clearing them, and follow BMW’s safety instructions for any high-voltage warning.
Which result should you trust?
For a casual check, a repeatable OBD reading can tell you whether a car deserves closer investigation. For a purchase, dispute or warranty claim, the BMW Quick Report or ISTA result is the defensible evidence because it is tied to the VIN, the correct battery configuration and BMW’s diagnostic procedure. If the two methods disagree, do not average them: verify the app profile and units, then rely on the professional BMW measurement.
