Ask the seller for BMW’s Battery Health Quick Report or arrange a qualified inspection, then confirm the car’s warranty by VIN and compare any range observations under similar conditions.
Ask for a battery health report tied to the car
Request the actual report for the i4 you are considering, with its date and vehicle identity visible. Ask who performed the test and what result it records. A verbal assurance that the battery is “healthy” is not a substitute for the written result.

BMW describes a technician-performed Battery Health Quick Report in two specific certified-used programs: BMW Approved Used electric cars in the UK and BMW Premium Certified used electric cars in Australia. BMW says the report determines the battery’s current state of health (SoH); its UK and Australian pages describe the rapid analysis as taking less than an hour. Those program descriptions do not establish that the report is available to every non-certified buyer or in every market. Ask a BMW retailer or service center what it can provide for this particular VIN.

Understand what SoH tells you—and what it does not
State of health compares the battery’s maximum energy capacity with its capacity when new. It is evidence about capacity retention, not a promise of a particular driving range. BMW notes that range and charging performance change with normal ageing.
A dashboard range estimate cannot isolate battery condition. BMW identifies factors including battery age and condition, starting charge, accessories, weather, driving style and vehicle load as influences on actual range. A brief test drive or one displayed estimate therefore cannot replace a battery report.

Check warranty coverage for this VIN and country
Warranty terms depend on market, vehicle history and eligibility. For the United States, BMW of North America states an 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery defect warranty from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever comes first. BMW separately describes capacity-loss/SoH protection for 2022–2025 BMW Certified EVs with retail delivery dates from March 1, 2026; that coverage is also stated as 8 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date, whichever comes first. The capacity-loss terms have specific certification and delivery-date criteria; do not assume they apply to an ordinary used i4.

Ask BMW to confirm in writing, by VIN, the in-service date, current mileage, certification status and remaining coverage. These cited warranty terms are US-specific; verify the applicable terms with BMW in the country where the car is registered.
Get a diagnosis if the car shows warning signs
If the i4 has a battery or drivetrain warning, charging trouble or inconsistent behavior, make the sale conditional on a professional diagnosis before purchase. The cited BMW material describes report and inspection routes but does not establish a consumer OBD-II scanner or DIY procedure as a validated way to measure the i4’s traction-battery SoH. Ask the service provider what its test measures and request the result in writing.

Compare used i4s on evidence, not a guessed cutoff
BMW’s cited material does not establish a universal pass/fail SoH percentage for every used i4. Do not turn a threshold mentioned for a particular Certified program into a general buying rule. When comparing cars, line up the evidence that is available:
