For the 2026 U.S. Kia Sorento, choose the powertrain first, then the least expensive trim with the equipment you need. The 191-hp gas engine suits buyers who do not need the turbo’s higher output; the 281-hp turbo is the stronger conventional-gas option; the 227-hp hybrid avoids plug-in charging; and the 261-hp plug-in hybrid makes the most sense when you can charge regularly and use its estimated 31-mile electric range. These specifications are for the U.S. 2026 model year; Sorento trims and powertrains differ by market.

Which Sorento trim should you buy?
There is no single best trim without knowing your priorities. For the gas model, LX and S pair with the 191-hp engine, while EX, SX and SX Prestige pair with the 281-hp turbo and wet DCT. Compare the equipment on the actual vehicles you are considering against the price difference, rather than paying for a higher trim by default. The Kia Sorento comparison page is a place to check listed configurations; confirm availability and installed options with the retailer.

For the 2026 HEV, Kia lists EX and SX Prestige. EX is listed with FWD, with AWD available; SX Prestige is listed with AWD standard. The PHEV is listed with AWD standard. AWD is not universal across the gas and HEV range, so verify the window sticker or vehicle specification for the specific Sorento you plan to buy.
Is the Sorento Hybrid worth it?
Kia advertises EPA-estimated fuel economy of 37 mpg combined for the HEV EX FWD and 34 mpg combined for AWD. These are estimates for the configurations Kia lists, not a guarantee of the mileage you will achieve. Check the estimate for the exact trim and drivetrain before comparing vehicles.

Kia lists starting MSRP at $38,890 for the Sorento Hybrid and $48,290 for the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid. Those are manufacturer starting prices, not quotes for a particular trim or predictions of what you will pay. Kia says MSRP excludes destination and handling, taxes, title, license fees, options and retailer charges; actual retailer prices may vary. Get written local quotes for comparable configurations. Kia’s Sorento Hybrid page and Sorento Plug-in Hybrid page list their respective starting prices.
For either hybrid, compare your expected annual mileage, trip pattern, local fuel and electricity costs, and the equipment and purchase prices of vehicles actually available to you. For the PHEV, include whether you can charge regularly and how often your trips would fit within its estimated electric range. The figures above do not establish an individual buyer’s savings or payback period.

Gas, hybrid or plug-in hybrid: how to decide
- Choose the 191-hp gas version if its output suits your driving and you prefer the listed 8-speed automatic.
- Choose the 281-hp turbo gas version if you want the higher stated gas-engine output; drive the wet DCT in conditions similar to your regular use.
- Choose the HEV if you want a hybrid powertrain without making plug-in charging part of your routine.
- Choose the PHEV if you have dependable charging access and expect to make useful use of its electric range; compare its actual price and equipment with the alternatives.
None of these powertrain figures establishes which Sorento is best for towing or highway driving. No towing test or independent road test is available here; check the exact vehicle’s specifications for your intended use and drive the configuration before deciding.
Will the Sorento fit your passengers and cargo?
Kia’s comparison page lists 41.4 inches of front legroom, 41.7 inches in the second row and 29.6 inches in the third row. Listed cargo volume is 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 38.5–45.0 cubic feet behind the second row and 75.5 cubic feet behind the first row. These are manufacturer-published figures; the second-row cargo range is presented as a range by Kia.

Bring the passengers and items you regularly carry to a test drive. Try child seats in their intended positions, check access to the third row, and load a stroller or luggage with the seats arranged as you would use them. Kia’s figures are on its Sorento comparison page.

IIHS rating
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) lists the 2026 Sorento as a Top Safety Pick+, but the award applies only to vehicles built after September 2025. The rating page lists Good scores for small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side evaluations. Check the build date of the vehicle you are considering and review the full IIHS rating; the model year alone does not establish that a particular vehicle qualifies.

Kia America, Inc. describes the coverage on its 2026 Sorento page as an “industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile Limited Warranty.” That headline is not a complete statement of coverage: consult the applicable warranty booklet for conditions, exclusions and transferability.
