Volkswagen Tayron: premium seven-seat focus
The Tayron R-Line is the premium-priced option in this shortlist, with the comparison reporting a ₹41.99–47.74 lakh ex-showroom range, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, 7-speed DCT and FWD or AWD depending on version. Volkswagen described it as a flagship seven-seater in its 13 January 2026 announcement, which also lists a 2,789 mm wheelbase and 850-litre boot with the third row folded. Škoda Kodiaq: check the Lounge seat count
The Kodiaq’s reported ₹36.99–46.99 lakh range places it below the Tayron at the entry point, but the variant matters: Škoda’s 2026 announcement identifies the Lounge as a five-seater, despite the model’s presence in a comparison that includes five- and seven-seat configurations. The Lounge is specified with a 2.0 TSI petrol engine, seven-speed DSG, 4×4 and a 786-litre boot. Škoda reports 150 kW and 320 Nm for the engine and says the Kodiaq is assembled at its Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar facility. Jeep Meridian: lower reported entry price and a diesel option
The Meridian has the lowest reported starting price among the four vehicles in Autocar India’s comparison, at ₹23.33 lakh ex-showroom, and offers both petrol and diesel engines. The comparison lists a manual transmission as well as a 9-speed automatic, and FWD or 4WD depending on version. That breadth makes it a flexible alternative on paper, but verify current availability, exact trim equipment, seating and drivetrain before treating a listed option as orderable.

Toyota Fortuner: choose it for a different kind of SUV
The Fortuner is not a direct substitute for a premium crossover. Toyota describes it as a body-on-frame, seven-seat SUV and lists petrol and diesel versions, with diesel 4WD variants and variant-specific off-road equipment. Toyota also lists seven SRS airbags. Autocar India highlights the diesel 4×4’s low-range transfer case and off-road positioning, while noting an older-feeling cabin and value trade-offs. It makes most sense when rugged construction and trail capability are priorities rather than matching the Sorento’s cabin or powertrain character. What sets the Sorento apart in this group?
In the cited comparison, the Sorento is the only model here listed with both a diesel and a strong-hybrid petrol powertrain. The Tayron and Kodiaq are listed with petrol engines, while the Meridian has petrol and diesel choices. The Sorento is also offered in six- and seven-seat configurations, useful if you want a six-seat layout rather than assuming every three-row SUV has the same cabin arrangement.

The listed dimensions make the Sorento the largest of the four in length, width and height: 4,815 × 1,900 × 1,785 mm. The Tayron measures 4,792 × 1,866 × 1,665 mm, the Kodiaq 4,758 × 1,864 × 1,679 mm, and the Meridian 4,769 × 1,859 × 1,698 mm. These figures describe exterior size; they do not establish third-row comfort or usable boot space across the vehicles. For wheelbase, the comparison gives the Sorento as 2,815 mm, while Kia’s specification page lists 2,820 mm; this source difference means the figure is best checked against the exact market specification. How to choose the right variant
- Set your budget using local on-road quotes. The ranges above are dated ex-showroom India prices, not city-level on-road totals. Ask dealers for an itemised quote for the exact trim and confirm availability.
- Decide how many seats you need. The Sorento is listed in six- and seven-seat forms; the others vary by version, and the Kodiaq Lounge is specifically a five-seater. Confirm the seating layout on the trim, not just the model name.
- Choose the powertrain before comparing equipment. The Sorento offers diesel and strong-hybrid petrol in the comparison; Tayron and Kodiaq are listed as petrol-only, while Meridian has petrol and diesel choices. Match the engine and transmission to your use rather than assuming outputs or fuel economy are directly comparable.
- Verify the driven wheels and hardware. FWD/AWD and 4WD are not interchangeable labels. Confirm whether the specific version is FWD, AWD or 4WD and, if off-road ability is the reason for buying, check the hardware and equipment fitted to that trim.
- Compare the cabin and cargo space in person. Published boot figures in the cited material are not measured on a common basis: Volkswagen gives the Tayron’s 850 litres with the third row folded, while Škoda lists 786 litres for the five-seat Kodiaq Lounge. Do not use these two figures as a like-for-like ranking.
