The most reliable way to check a Bajaj motorcycle or scooter’s real-world mileage is the full-tank-to-full-tank method: fill the tank to the same level, record the distance travelled, refill to that level, and divide kilometres ridden by litres added. To improve the result, use smooth throttle and braking, select gears for the speed and load, maintain the correct tyre pressure, keep up with the model’s service schedule, and investigate any sudden drop rather than comparing your bike with a generic Bajaj figure.
What mileage means and why one number is not universal
Mileage is normally expressed as kilometres per litre (km/L or kmpl). It is a result from a particular motorcycle, rider, route, load, traffic pattern, tyre condition and maintenance state. A figure quoted for one Bajaj model is not a dependable expectation for another model, variant, year or market.

Bajaj’s Pulsar NS 160 FAQ gives model-specific mileage information, but that information should not be reused as a benchmark for every Bajaj two-wheeler. There is no single authoritative Bajaj-wide km/L number that can tell you whether your individual bike is healthy. The useful comparison is your own bike measured repeatedly with the same method.

Use the full-tank-to-full-tank method
Bajaj describes the full-tank-to-full-tank method as the best way to calculate mileage. It avoids trying to infer consumption from a fuel gauge, whose display is not a precise volume measurement.
“Best way to calculate mileage is by following the full tank to full tank method.”
This wording appears in Bajaj’s Pulsar 125 owner’s manual. The method is simple, but consistency at both fill-ups determines how useful the result will be.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat you need
- The motorcycle or scooter’s odometer or trip meter.
- A fuel station where you can refill to the same level on the next visit.
- The litres added at the second fill-up, taken from the dispenser.
- A note or phone record containing the distance, litres, route, load and any unusual conditions.
Step-by-step procedure
- Fill to a repeatable level. Fill the tank up to the brim, or to the small mouth as the manual describes. Use the same practical stopping point each time rather than stopping at an arbitrary gauge position.
- Record the starting distance. Reset the trip meter, or write down the odometer reading. If you reset the trip meter, keep the original odometer reading as a backup.
- Ride a measured distance. Bajaj’s example uses about 100 km. A longer distance can make small fill-level differences less important, provided the route and riding conditions remain representative.
- Refill to the same level. Preferably use the same station and the same dispenser. Ask for the same fill level you used at the start, then record the litres added. The litres added are the fuel consumed for the distance measured, subject to the accuracy of the two fill-ups.
- Calculate km/L. Divide kilometres ridden by litres added. The formula is
km/L = kilometres ridden ÷ litres added.
Worked example
If the trip meter shows 100 km and the refill takes 2.5 L, the calculation is 100 ÷ 2.5 = 40 km/L. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim that any particular Bajaj model should deliver 40 km/L.
Repeat before drawing a conclusion
One tank can be distorted by a different stopping point at the pump, unusually heavy traffic, a long high-speed run, extra luggage or a change in tyre pressure. Repeat the measurement across more than one tank when practical. Keep the same bike and fill method, and record conditions so you can see whether a change is real or just normal variation.
Make successive measurements comparable
A mileage log is more useful when it records the conditions that explain the number. Keep these factors as consistent as possible, or record them whenever they change.

| Factor | What to record or keep consistent | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel fill | Same fill level; preferably the same station and dispenser | A different stopping point changes the litres added without changing the distance. |
| Route | City, highway or mixed riding; traffic and hills | Stop-start traffic and gradients produce a different result from an open, steady route. |
| Load | Rider, passenger and luggage | Additional mass changes the work the engine must do. Stay within the specified payload. |
| Riding pattern | Typical speed, acceleration, braking and gear selection | Hard acceleration and frequent braking consume more fuel than smooth, steady progress. |
| Tyres | Pressure checked against the exact model manual | Low pressure increases rolling resistance and fuel consumption. |
| Condition | Service status, air filter, spark plug, oil, brakes and clutch adjustment | A maintenance issue can make a genuine drop look like a measurement error. |
When comparing two readings, compare like with like. A city-only tank should not be treated as a fair test against a highway tank, and a heavily loaded trip should not be used to judge an unloaded commute.
How to interpret a low or changing result
If the result is lower for one tank
First repeat the test using the same fill level and a similar route. Check whether the tank included unusually slow traffic, extended idling, hills, a passenger, luggage or sustained high-speed riding. A single low reading does not prove a mechanical fault.
If the result stays lower over several tanks
Move from measurement checks to basic inspection. Confirm tyre pressure, look for signs of a fuel-line leak, and check for a brake that is not releasing fully. Then verify the air filter, spark plug, engine oil specification and quantity, and clutch-lever play according to the model manual. Persistent loss after these checks warrants assessment by a qualified Bajaj service professional.
If the reading changes sharply after maintenance or a repair
Keep the old and new records, including the date and work performed. Recheck the fill method before attributing the change to the repair. If the difference remains across repeated tanks, tell the service professional exactly when it began and under which route and load conditions.
Riding habits that reduce unnecessary fuel use
Bajaj owner manuals emphasize control and consistency rather than a universal speed promise. The following practices apply the guidance without assuming that one optimum speed suits every model or road.

Accelerate progressively and use the accelerator judiciously. Repeated abrupt openings of the throttle create avoidable fuel demand, especially in stop-start traffic. Once at a safe, legal pace, hold a steady throttle where traffic allows instead of repeatedly surging and slowing.

Choose the gear for speed and load
Use a gear appropriate for the road speed and the load on the bike. A gear that is too high can make the engine labour; a gear that is too low can keep engine speed unnecessarily high. The correct choice is model- and situation-dependent, so use the shifting guidance in the owner’s manual and pay attention to smooth engine operation.
Avoid harsh braking and the acceleration that follows it
Hard braking followed by another hard acceleration wastes the energy you just used to gain speed. Look ahead, leave a safe gap and make gradual changes where road conditions permit. This is both a fuel-efficiency practice and a safer way to manage traffic.
Respect the specified payload
Do not exceed the payload stated for the motorcycle. A passenger, luggage or a heavy accessory load increases the effort required to accelerate and climb. Record major load changes in your mileage log so you do not mistake them for an engine problem.
Switch off for longer stops when appropriate
Bajaj manuals advise switching off the engine for stops longer than two minutes where appropriate. Do not apply that instruction in a situation where restarting would be unsafe or where traffic control requires the engine to remain running. For ordinary, safe waits, avoiding extended idling removes fuel use that produces no distance.
Maintenance checks Bajaj manuals associate with fuel economy
Use the exact maintenance schedule and specifications for your model, not a generic interval copied from another Bajaj bike. The CT 100/CT 110 BS-VI manual and the Pulsar 125 manual identify several checks that can affect running condition.
Tyre pressure
Check pressure with the tyres cold and compare it with the value printed in your model’s manual or on the vehicle. Bajaj Nepal explains that low tyre pressure increases fuel consumption and directs owners to the model manual for the correct pressure: What Happens If Tyre Pressure Is Too Low?

“Always maintain recommended tyre pressure.”
This sentence appears in Bajaj’s Pulsar 125 manual. Do not substitute a one-size-fits-all pressure value: the correct number depends on the model, tyre specification, load and market. A digital tyre-pressure gauge is a practical way to check pressure yourself, but the manual remains the authority for the target value.
Recommended Free Tools
Air filter
A dirty or restricted air filter can affect the engine’s air supply and should be inspected and serviced at the interval specified for the exact model. Do not assume that an air filter from another variant or a different replacement interval is suitable.
Spark plug
Inspect the spark plug as directed in the maintenance schedule. The correct plug type, gap and replacement timing are model-specific. If you are not able to identify the required specification, have a qualified technician perform the check rather than guessing.
Engine oil
Use the grade and quantity stated in the manual, and observe the specified inspection and replacement schedule. Overfilling, underfilling or using an unsuitable grade can affect operation. Record the oil service in the same log as your mileage readings.
Fuel-line leaks
Inspect visible fuel lines and connections for signs of leakage. A fuel smell, wet connection or unexplained loss should be treated as a safety issue, not merely as poor mileage. Do not continue using a leaking system; arrange qualified service.

Brake drag
Brakes that do not release fully create resistance while riding. Have the brake system checked if a wheel feels unusually resistant, the bike does not roll freely, or the mileage drop accompanies heat or abnormal brake behaviour. Brake adjustment and service procedures vary by model.

Clutch-lever play
Check clutch-lever free play against the model’s stated range. Incorrect adjustment can affect how power is transferred and may contribute to inefficient operation. Use the manual’s procedure or have the adjustment made by a qualified technician.

- Validate the number. Repeat a full-tank-to-full-tank test, using the same fill level and preferably the same pump. Record kilometres and litres rather than relying on the fuel gauge.
- Check the obvious variables. Note traffic, route, hills, payload, passenger, weather conditions and riding style. Compare the result only with a similar previous tank.
- Verify tyre pressure. Measure against the exact model manual. Correct pressure before making another comparison.
- Look for resistance or loss. Check for fuel-line leaks and signs that a brake is binding. Do not dismantle safety-critical systems unless you are qualified.
- Review scheduled maintenance. Confirm air-filter, spark-plug and engine-oil work, along with clutch-lever play, using the model’s maintenance table.
- Escalate a persistent change. If repeated readings remain poor after the basic checks, provide your mileage log to an authorised or otherwise qualified Bajaj service professional. Include the model, variant, year, market, route mix, load and the date the change began.
Use model-specific manuals and regional guidance correctly
Bajaj’s Owner’s Manual index is the starting point for the manual that matches your motorcycle or scooter. The Pulsar 125 and CT 100/CT 110 BS-VI documents illustrate the mileage method and maintenance checks, but their exact specifications should not be transplanted to another model.
Regional pages can add useful general guidance. Bajaj’s Kenya article, Maintenance Tips for Bajaj Boxer 125 HD, recommends logging kilometres per litre and checking the air filter, spark plug, tyre pressure, gearing and load when fuel use rises. That is a troubleshooting framework, not a replacement for the manual for your own market.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Likewise, the Nepal tyre-pressure article reflects guidance for that region. Pressure labels, service schedules, parts and legal requirements can differ by market, so use the local manual and the specifications printed for your vehicle.
What to put in a mileage log
For each tank, record the date, starting and ending odometer or trip readings, kilometres ridden, litres added, calculated km/L, route mix, passenger or luggage, tyre-pressure check, and any maintenance or unusual traffic. After several entries, look for a sustained pattern rather than reacting to one number.
A useful record also notes whether the refill was made at the same station and dispenser. If it was not, mark that entry so you know the comparison is less precise. Keep receipts or pump readings when available, but the key calculation remains distance divided by litres added.
When a service visit is the right next step
Arrange professional inspection when mileage remains lower across repeated, comparable tanks, when a fuel leak is suspected, or when the bike shows brake drag, abnormal engine behaviour or a clutch that cannot be adjusted to specification. Bring your mileage log and identify the exact model, variant, year and market. That information lets the technician use the correct manual and parts information instead of applying a generic Bajaj interval or pressure value.
