Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The safest way to choose an e-bike size is to combine the exact model’s size chart with frame geometry and an in-person fit check. Use your height to shortlist sizes, then verify standover clearance (on a step-over frame), reach, stack, saddle-height range and your actual posture on the assembled bicycle. A height range alone cannot prove that a particular e-bike will be comfortable or controllable.
Why an e-bike size chart is only the starting point
Size labels such as small, medium and large are not standardized. Two e-bikes with the same label can have different top-tube lengths, head-tube heights, wheel sizes, handlebar positions and seatpost ranges. Even within one manufacturer, a city step-through, a trekking model and an off-road bike may use different geometry for the same rider height.

Find the chart for the precise model, wheel configuration and frame style you intend to buy. Use the listed rider-height range to narrow the choice, not to make the final decision. Ducati’s E-Bike Size Guide describes its height recommendation as a suggestion and notes that other physical characteristics and riding style matter. If you fall between sizes, compare the geometry of both candidates and ride both when possible.

The practical question is not “Which size matches my height?” It is “Which size lets me stand over, reach the controls, set the saddle correctly and maintain the intended riding posture without strain?”

1. Confirm the exact model, frame and size chart
Match the chart to the bike you will actually receive
Before measuring yourself, record the complete model name, model year, frame style and wheel size. A manufacturer may publish separate charts for a step-over and a step-through version, or for different generations of the same e-bike. A chart for a similar-looking model is not a reliable substitute.
- Check whether the chart uses rider height, inseam, or both.
- Confirm that the chart applies to the selected frame style and wheel size.
- Note whether a listed range is a recommendation or a hard fit limit; most are recommendations.
- Save the geometry table for every size that includes your height so you can compare them side by side.
Measure consistently
Measure height without shoes against a wall, standing naturally with your heels together. If the result is close to a size boundary, measure your inseam as well: stand in riding shorts with your feet apart, press a book firmly upward between your legs, and measure from the book’s top edge to the floor. This measurement helps you evaluate standover and saddle range, but it does not replace a test ride.
Human proportions vary. A rider with a long torso and short legs may prefer a different size from a rider of the same height with a short torso and long legs. Flexibility, shoulder width, preferred posture and the bike’s intended terrain also affect the choice.

2. Check standover clearance on a step-over frame
How to perform the check
- Wear the shoes you normally use for riding. Sole thickness changes the available clearance.
- Ask the seller to hold the e-bike upright on level ground, or have a helper steady it while you stand beside it.
- Straddle the frame at the point where your crotch would align with the top tube. Keep both feet flat if you can.
- Measure the vertical space between your crotch and the top tube. Do not rely on a visual estimate if the clearance is close.
- Repeat the check with the bike in the riding position and with your normal clothing, especially if you will use padded shorts or winter layers.
The Global E-Bike User Manual v2 (2025) from YT Industries gives these minimum clearances for a step-over e-bike:
| Intended use | Minimum standover clearance in the YT manual | Why the allowance changes |
|---|---|---|
| Paved surfaces only | 5 cm | Typical stops are on predictable, level ground. |
| Unpaved surfaces | 7.5 cm | Ruts, loose ground and unexpected dismounts require more room. |
| Off-road riding | 10 cm or more | Uneven terrain increases the chance of moving forward or landing on the top tube. |
These figures are guidance from that manual, not a universal pass/fail law for every frame design. The same manual says that if you touch the frame, the e-bike is too big. A frame with a sharply sloped top tube may provide more clearance at one point than another, so measure where your body actually meets the frame rather than at the seat tube alone.
Step-through frames need a different check
A step-through frame does not have a conventional top-tube standover test. Instead, verify that you can step through comfortably while the bike is stationary and that the saddle can be positioned for your legs. Check the seatpost’s marked minimum-insertion and maximum-extension limits; a saddle that must be raised beyond the mark is unsafe, while a saddle that cannot be lowered enough may leave you unable to support yourself at stops.
Also test the distance from the ground to the saddle, the width of the central frame area and the clearance for your knees when mounting. Step-through access solves one problem, but it does not guarantee that the cockpit or pedaling position fits.

3. Use reach and stack to compare candidate sizes
What the numbers describe
Frame reach is the horizontal geometry measurement used to compare how long the frame is from the bottom-bracket area toward the head tube. Stack is the corresponding vertical measurement that indicates how high the front of the frame sits. Manufacturer geometry tables commonly list both values by frame size. The Riese & Müller geometry explainer is useful for learning the terminology, while the Trek Domane+ AL 5 product page illustrates how a manufacturer can publish reach, stack and standover together in a size chart.
Reach and stack are frame clues, not measurements of your final hand position. Stem length, handlebar sweep and rise, brake-lever angle, grips, spacers and saddle position all change where your hands and torso end up. Two bikes with identical reach can feel different if their cockpits use different stems or bars.
Compare sizes on the same model
| Geometry item | What to record for each candidate size | What it can reveal | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | The manufacturer’s listed frame reach | Whether one size is materially longer or shorter than another | Whether your hands will be comfortable after stem, bar and saddle adjustments |
| Stack | The listed frame stack | Whether the front end is relatively tall or low | Whether your preferred back and neck posture is achievable |
| Standover | The listed clearance, then your physical measurement | Whether the frame is likely to leave room when you dismount | How much clearance you have in your riding shoes on uneven ground |
| Seat-tube or saddle range | Permitted seatpost insertion and extension | Whether the saddle can reach your pedaling height | Whether the resulting cockpit feels right |
There is no universal reach number that suits every rider. Treat a large difference between sizes as a reason to inspect both bikes, not as an automatic verdict. A shorter frame may make the controls easier to reach but feel cramped; a longer frame may provide stability but force you to overstretch. Only the assembled bike, adjusted within its permitted range, reveals which outcome applies to you.
Account for frame style and intended posture
Upright commuter and step-through e-bikes generally position the rider differently from drop-bar or sport-oriented models. Compare a candidate only with bikes designed for a similar posture and use. An aggressive position that works for a performance road e-bike is not the target for a relaxed city bike, and a very upright setup may not provide the handling or weight distribution intended for a fast, technical model.
4. Set the saddle and verify the usable height range
Check the seatpost markings first
Locate the seatpost’s minimum-insertion mark before making adjustments. The post must remain inserted at least to that mark. If the correct leg extension would require pulling the post above it, choose another frame, a compatible longer post approved by the manufacturer, or professional advice rather than riding with an unsafe setup.
Use the heel-on-pedal setup check
- Place the e-bike on level ground and sit naturally on the saddle.
- Put one heel on the pedal and rotate the crank until that pedal is at its lowest position.
- With your pelvis level, your leg should be straight or nearly straight without reaching by tilting your hips.
- Switch sides and repeat.
The Yamaha Motor Europe CROSSCORE RC owner manual uses this as a rough setup check. If your hips rock to reach the low pedal, the saddle is too high. If your knee remains noticeably bent, it is too low. This is a starting adjustment, not a medical prescription or a guarantee of individualized fit.
Confirm the position while pedaling
After the heel check, place the balls of your feet on the pedals and pedal at an easy cadence. Your knees should track comfortably, your pelvis should stay stable and you should not slide forward to reach the bars. Try several saddle heights in small increments. A saddle that feels acceptable for a few seconds can still be wrong once you pedal continuously, climb, brake or look over your shoulder.

- ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient
Check the saddle’s fore-and-aft adjustment as well. Moving it changes both leg extension and effective reach, so do not use a large saddle movement to compensate for a frame that is fundamentally too long or short.
5. Test the complete riding position, not just the bare frame
Before moving off
- Can you mount and dismount without twisting or catching clothing?
- With both hands on the grips, can you reach the brake levers without stretching your fingers?
- Can you see the display and operate its controls without taking an unsafe hand off the bar?
- Do your knees clear the handlebar, bag, front basket and other accessories at full steering lock?
- When seated, can you put a foot down in the way you expect at a stop?
During the ride
Ride the actual size and frame style whenever possible. Begin in an open, low-traffic area and use the posture intended for that model rather than deliberately hunching or sitting unusually upright. Pay attention to whether your shoulders can relax, your elbows have a slight bend, your wrists stay neutral and your pelvis remains centered on the saddle.
Try starts, gentle braking, slow turns, a normal climb and a short stretch over the surface for which the bike is designed. The bike should feel controlled when you look ahead, signal, change assist level and brake. If you must slide far forward on the saddle, lock your elbows, shrug your shoulders or rotate your wrists to reach the controls, ask to try another size or cockpit configuration.
Separate a setup problem from a size problem
A small saddle-height, lever-angle or bar-rotation adjustment can resolve discomfort. A frame that leaves no comfortable adjustment range cannot. Ask the shop to demonstrate the available adjustments and to keep every component within its marked or manufacturer-specified limits. If the seller cannot make the controls comfortable without extreme changes, test the adjacent size or a different frame style.
6. Compare two plausible sizes systematically
When the chart leaves you between sizes, use the same criteria for both bikes. Write down the values from the exact model’s geometry table and record what you felt on a test ride.
| Comparison question | What to inspect | Decision signal |
|---|---|---|
| Does the chart include you? | Rider-height and, if provided, inseam range for each size | Both may be candidates; a chart boundary calls for a test ride rather than a guess. |
| Can you stand over it? | Your shoe-on clearance at the real top-tube contact point | Choose the frame that meets the terrain-appropriate clearance without contact. |
| Can the saddle reach your pedaling height? | Seatpost markings and the usable saddle range | Reject a size that requires an unsafe extension or leaves the saddle too high. |
| How long and tall is the frame? | Reach and stack compared with the adjacent size | Use the difference to predict what you must verify at the cockpit; no number proves fit. |
| Are the controls natural? | Brake-lever reach, display access, wrist angle and shoulder relaxation | Prefer the size that works with ordinary adjustments, not forced posture. |
| Does it suit your use? | Intended terrain, expected clothing and mounting frequency | A practical step-through or more clearance may matter more than a nominally perfect height match. |
If one size has better standover but the other gives a clearly more stable, relaxed cockpit, ask whether the preferred cockpit can be achieved with the manufacturer-approved stem, bar or spacer options. Do not assume that an aftermarket part will be compatible with the brakes, cables, display wiring or warranty requirements.

8. When to involve a fitter or mechanic
Ask a qualified bike fitter or experienced mechanic for help when two sizes remain plausible, your proportions are unusual, an injury affects your posture, or the shop cannot explain the adjustment limits. Professional input is especially useful when discomfort persists after modest saddle and control adjustments, or when a proposed change affects cables, hydraulic brake lines, the seatpost insertion depth or the manufacturer’s safety limits.
The Yamaha owner manual states the consequence plainly: “If your bicycle does not fit properly, you may lose control and fall.” Treat persistent discomfort or an unclear adjustment range as a reason to pause the purchase, not as something to endure until you get used to it.
9. A purchase-day fit checklist
- Exact model, frame style, wheel size and current size chart confirmed.
- Height and inseam measured consistently.
- Candidate sizes’ reach, stack, standover and saddle-range data recorded.
- Step-over clearance checked in normal riding shoes, with terrain-appropriate margin.
- Step-through mounting and saddle adjustment checked within the marked limits.
- Heel-on-pedal saddle check completed on both sides.
- Controls reached without locked elbows, shrugged shoulders or bent wrists.
- Starts, stops, braking, slow turns and a representative surface tested.
- Any proposed stem, bar, spacer or seatpost change confirmed as compatible and permitted.
- Persistent discomfort referred to a qualified fitter or mechanic before payment.
The correct e-bike size is the one that passes all of these checks for your body, frame style and intended riding—not merely the one whose label matches a height bracket.
