1. Identify the exact GLC before judging it
Start by writing down the vehicle identification number (VIN), build date, model year, engine variant, registration market, odometer reading and equipment. A GLC 220d 4MATIC badge is not enough to establish the engine, emissions equipment or campaign coverage. Different production periods may use different diesel configurations, including cars associated with the OM651 and OM654 engine families.

Record these details at the viewing
- VIN, copied from the vehicle and registration documents rather than typed from an advert.
- Build date and model year, which are not always the same as the first registration date.
- Engine code or variant, if shown on the vehicle documentation or a diagnostic report.
- Country in which the car was first registered and the country in which you are buying it.
- Current odometer reading, number of previous keepers and stated use, such as commuting, towing or mostly urban trips.
- Factory equipment that can affect inspection, including air suspension, a panoramic roof, advanced driver-assistance systems, four-wheel steering or a tow bar.
Keep this information together with photographs of the VIN plates, odometer and service book. It prevents you from applying a campaign or defect claim from a different GLC generation, market or engine.

2. Demand a coherent maintenance history
Ask for dated invoices, workshop job sheets, inspection reports and digital service entries before paying a deposit. A stamped booklet by itself is weak evidence: the useful record shows what was done, at what mileage, and by whom.
Reconcile the records with the car
- List every recorded service date and mileage in chronological order.
- Compare the latest invoice mileage with the odometer. Investigate any decrease, unexplained gap or implausibly small annual distance.
- Switch on the ignition and open the ASSYST PLUS service information in the instrument display. The Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV January 2021 X253 MBUX Owner’s Manual states: “The ASSYST PLUS service interval display on the instrument display provides information on the remaining time or distance before the next service due date.”
- Compare the displayed remaining time or distance with the latest invoice and the seller’s claim about when the next service is due.
- Ask which work was carried out outside routine servicing: battery replacement, tyres, brakes, suspension components, emissions repairs, transmission work and accident repairs.
ASSYST PLUS reports the interval remaining; it does not prove that previous work was completed correctly. Missing invoices, a service display that does not fit the paperwork, or mileage entries that do not form a believable sequence should lower your confidence.
Ask how the diesel was used
The 2021 X253 manual notes that service intervals may shorten when a vehicle is used mainly for short journeys, left idling for long periods, started cold frequently or has diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration interrupted often. Ask the owner for a realistic description of the weekly pattern rather than accepting “mostly motorway” without detail. A low-mileage car used for repeated short trips can need more scrutiny than a higher-mileage car that reached operating temperature regularly.

Run the VIN through the Mercedes-Benz recall lookup for the vehicle’s country and ask a Mercedes-Benz service partner to confirm both outstanding and completed measures in writing. The result must be VIN-specific; a general internet discussion is not evidence that a particular car is affected or repaired.

Campaigns relevant to some GLC diesels
Mercedes-Benz’s European overview describes a 2018 KBA-ordered campaign for Euro 6b diesel vehicles. It mainly included vehicles with the 2.2-litre OM651 diesel, among them some GLCs. The campaign was broad, not a determination that every diesel GLC or every 220d requires the same work.
Mercedes-Benz says diesel measures can include an engine-control software update and, where technically required, replacement of NOx sensors. It states that applicable updates are carried out without charge. Obtain the campaign number, required remedy and completion date for the individual VIN, and retain the written confirmation.
ADAC’s model listing also records a 2022 timing-chain recall for certain OM654-equipped GLC 253 vehicles, with affected build years listed as 2016–2019. This is a limited scope. It does not establish that every OM654 GLC, every 220d or every car built in those years has a timing-chain defect. Ask for the VIN result and the repair record.
How to treat an outstanding campaign
- Confirmed completed: keep the completion document with the purchase file and still inspect the car’s present condition.
- Open but parts and appointment available: make the sale conditional on the work being completed by an authorised repairer, or agree in writing who will arrange it and who pays for unrelated findings.
- Unclear status: do not rely on the seller’s verbal assurance. Pause the transaction until a service partner confirms the VIN status.
4. Inspect the diesel emissions system and warning messages
Before starting the engine, turn the ignition on and read every warning and information message. Photograph the instrument display if anything appears, including emissions warnings, AdBlue notices, countdowns to restricted operation or a no-restart warning.

AdBlue checks
AdBlue is the fluid used for diesel NOx after-treatment. The Mercedes-Benz manual specifies ISO 22241 fluid and a separate AdBlue tank. It must never be poured into the diesel tank. Ask when it was last refilled, whether the car has displayed low-level or quality warnings, and whether any injector, pump, heater, NOx sensor or software work has been performed.
A warning that disappears after a restart is still a fault to diagnose. Have stored and pending faults read with equipment that can communicate with the relevant Mercedes-Benz control modules; a seller’s explanation that a light was “just reset” is not a repair record.
5. See the car cold and inspect its physical condition
Arrange the first viewing when the engine has been cold for several hours. Ask the seller not to start it before you arrive. A warm engine can hide difficult starting, smoke, noise and leaks.
Exterior and body
- Walk around the car in daylight and compare paint colour, panel gaps, bumper alignment and lamp condition from side to side.
- Look for overspray, sanding marks, inconsistent fasteners and paint thickness differences that suggest previous repairs.
- Inspect the windscreen, panoramic-roof glass, seals and drains for cracks, dampness or staining.
- Check door, tailgate and bonnet operation, including powered functions, soft-close features and the fuel flap.
- Look underneath for fresh oil, coolant, AdBlue or differential-fluid residue. A clean undertray can conceal a leak, so ask whether it was recently washed.
Tyres, brakes and suspension
- Record tyre brand, size, load and speed rating on all four corners. Uneven inner-edge wear can indicate alignment, suspension or drivetrain issues.
- Check tread depth and age, sidewall damage, bulges and mismatched tyres. A 4MATIC system deserves four tyres with compatible dimensions and similar wear.
- Look through the wheels for heavily corroded discs, a pronounced lip, blue heat marks or uneven pad wear.
- Inspect springs, dampers, arms, bushes and protective boots for damage or leakage. If the car has air suspension, check that it sits level after being parked and that it raises and lowers without an error.
6. Carry out a disciplined cold start
With the car cold, observe the complete start sequence rather than focusing only on whether it eventually runs.

- Confirm that the ignition-on warning lamps illuminate for their self-test and then go out after the engine starts. A lamp that never appears may have been disabled.
- Listen for extended cranking, metallic rattling, a single heavy knock or repeated clicking.
- Watch the exhaust for persistent blue, white or dense black smoke after the initial start.
- Let the engine idle without touching the accelerator. Note unstable idle, misfire-like vibration, fan operation and unusual hissing or ticking.
- Open the bonnet and inspect for fuel, oil, coolant and AdBlue leaks. Do not place hands near belts, fans or hot components.
- After the engine reaches temperature, look again for leaks and check whether any warning returns.
These observations are screening clues, not proof of a specific failed component. A cold-start rattle, smoke, rough running or unexplained fluid loss warrants a diagnostic inspection before purchase.
7. Test the transmission, 4MATIC system and brakes on the road
Use a route that includes manoeuvring, urban speeds, smooth acceleration, braking and a faster section where legal and safe. Keep the audio system off so you can hear the car.
Low-speed manoeuvres
- Select reverse and drive repeatedly with the brake held. Engagement should not involve a long delay, harsh bang or unexplained shudder.
- Make full-lock turns on a dry, open surface at low speed. Listen for clicking, binding or hopping and feel for steering-wheel vibration.
- Drive over a few gentle, uneven surfaces. Clunks, knocks or a repeated thump can indicate suspension, mount or drivetrain wear.
Acceleration and cruising
- Accelerate progressively from low speed. Look for hesitation, limp-mode behaviour, smoke or a surge that does not match pedal movement.
- At steady speed, listen for a whine, rumble or vibration that changes with throttle, road speed or cornering. Note whether it comes from the engine, transmission, propeller shaft or an axle area; diagnosis is needed to identify the source.
- Check that the automatic transmission shifts smoothly in ordinary driving and under moderate acceleration. Do not abuse the vehicle to provoke a fault.
Braking and steering
- In a safe location, brake progressively from several speeds. The car should remain stable without pulling, juddering or excessive pedal travel.
- Check steering-centre position and whether the vehicle drifts on a reasonably level road. A pull can result from tyres, alignment, brakes or suspension.
- After the drive, smell for overheated brakes and inspect the wheels for an abnormal temperature difference without touching hot components.
8. Scan the car before you commit
A Mercedes-compatible OBD-II scanner can reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes and is a useful screening tool, but a basic reader may not access every control module or every model year. Confirm compatibility before buying or borrowing one.

What to request from a scan
- Read current, stored and pending faults from engine, transmission, emissions, restraint, braking, all-wheel-drive and body-control systems where the equipment supports them.
- Save the report with the VIN, mileage and date. A cleared-code screen without freeze-frame or module details is weak evidence.
- Ask whether monitors are complete. Recently reset faults can leave readiness monitors incomplete, which is a reason to investigate rather than assume the car is healthy.
- Compare scan mileage and operating data with the instrument cluster and service documents where available.
Do not clear faults during a viewing to make the dashboard look clean. Let an independent specialist interpret the codes, test the affected system and estimate the repair path.

9. Compare two candidate GLC 220d cars by evidence
When two cars have similar prices, the better purchase is usually the one with the more traceable condition, not automatically the lower-mileage or newest-looking example.

10. Put breakdown statistics in the right context
ADAC’s table, accessed in 2026, reports the following breakdown figures for Mercedes-Benz GLCs by registration year. The figures are GLC-wide, not specific to the 220d 4MATIC, and the displayed breakdown category is starter-battery breakdowns. They are population statistics, not a forecast for the car in front of you.

Use the table to understand why battery condition and documented maintenance matter, not to claim that a particular engine or component has a stated failure rate. A battery test and the vehicle’s actual starting behaviour are more useful for an individual purchase.

Walk away or pause immediately when
- The VIN, ownership documents or mileage cannot be verified.
- The seller refuses a cold start, independent inspection or diagnostic scan.
- There is persistent smoke, severe starting noise, overheating, major fluid loss, limp mode or a red safety warning.
- Recall status is unresolved and the seller will not allow time for written confirmation.
- The service history contains material gaps that cannot be explained.
Make the purchase conditional when
- A specialist identifies a repairable issue and the price reflects a documented estimate.
- An open campaign can be completed before handover with written proof.
- Tyres, brakes or scheduled maintenance are due soon and the contract states who completes them.
Record every agreed repair, campaign completion and included document in the purchase contract. Avoid relying on promises made only in a phone call.
12. Arrange the independent inspection
The final check should be performed by an independent workshop familiar with Mercedes-Benz vehicles, not a seller-selected inspection that cannot report impartially. Give the technician the VIN, service records, scan report and your observations. Ask for a written report covering the engine, emissions system, transmission, 4MATIC driveline, suspension, brakes, tyres, body structure, water ingress, electronic systems and evidence of accident repair.
Mercedes-Benz maintenance guidance directs owners to qualified workshops. That does not mean every dealer or workshop will provide the same pre-purchase scope, so confirm in advance that the inspection includes a lift, cold-start assessment where possible, road test and module-level diagnosis.
Final decision framework
Buy only when the exact vehicle is identified, its mileage and servicing form a credible record, the VIN campaign check is resolved, no warning or scan result is unexplained, and the cold inspection and road test reveal no condition that exceeds your repair budget. If any one of those areas remains uncertain, the prudent next step is not a guess about the GLC 220d badge; it is a written diagnosis and a revised decision based on that individual car.
