Before buying a used Ford EcoSport, verify its VIN-specific recall status, match its engine and transmission to the records, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Pay particular attention to two recalls affecting certain EcoSports—not every vehicle—and test the car both cold and fully warm. A model-year search or code-reader scan alone cannot establish that the car is safe or well maintained.
Start with the vehicle’s identity and records
- Match the VIN. Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the title and other paperwork. Record the model year, build date if available, engine, transmission and mileage. Pause if the documents or ownership history do not line up.
- Ask for maintenance records. Request invoices and ask what work was done, when and by whom. Look for evidence of scheduled maintenance and any repairs related to warning lights, leaks, misfires, loss of power or shifting concerns.
- Check the owner’s manual for the specific vehicle. Ford’s online EcoSport manual notes that its information may vary slightly from the original printed manual; manuals and equipment can also vary by year and region. Use the manual matching the car where possible: Ford owner manuals.
Ford’s certification inspection materials include VIN and vehicle-history checks, maintenance and recall review, and checks across the vehicle’s condition. The Gold Certified program describes a 172-point inspection, while Blue Certified describes a 139-point inspection; these are certification checklist counts, not EcoSport reliability ratings. See Ford’s Gold Certified Inspection and Blue Certified Inspection information.

Check recalls by VIN before negotiating
Search the car’s actual VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup, then ask a Ford dealer to confirm whether any listed recall applies and whether the remedy has been completed. A year-and-model search is useful for background, but it cannot establish the status of a particular vehicle. NHTSA says recalls do not expire.

This recall covers certain 2018–2022 EcoSports built April 3, 2017 through October 12, 2021, with a 1.0L engine and 6F15 automatic transmission. The recall report describes a possible fractured oil-pump belt tensioner arm or degraded belt that can lose teeth and cause loss of oil pressure. The stated risks include engine damage or seizure, loss of motive power and loss of power-braking assist. The reported remedy is replacement of the oil-pump tensioner assembly and drive belt at no charge. Confirm applicability and repair completion by VIN; model year alone is not enough. Ford’s 2023 report lists 113,689 EcoSport vehicles in the affected population, not all EcoSports. See the 23V-905 recall report.

Front halfshafts: recall 25V-126
This recall concerns certain 2021–2022 EcoSports with a 6F15 automatic transmission, built April 1, 2021 through July 20, 2022. NHTSA says a front halfshaft may not have been fully inserted into the transmission during assembly. Possible consequences include loss of motive power while driving or rollaway when parked without the parking brake. Ask for VIN-specific status and documentation of the repair. NHTSA’s report states that 18,648 EcoSport vehicles are affected in the specified group. See the 25V-126 recall report.
Inspect the exterior, cabin and underbody
- Check whether body panels, doors and the tailgate align and operate properly. Look for signs of major collision repair, fire or flood exposure; inspect glass, lights and visible seals for damage.
- In the cabin, check seat belts, airbag warning lights, switches, displays, windows, locks, wipers and heating and air conditioning. Turn the ignition on and note warning lights; ask for an explanation and diagnosis of any that remain on.
- Look underneath for visible leaks, damage or poorly secured components. A clean-looking engine bay or fresh detailing does not replace an inspection on a lift.

Check tires, brakes, steering and suspension
- Compare tire sizes and check tread depth, pressure and wear across all tires. Uneven wear may warrant checks of alignment, suspension or tire condition rather than an assumption about the cause.
- Look for wheel damage and listen for unusual rubbing, squealing, grinding, clunks or vibration while driving and braking.
- On the road, assess whether steering feels consistent and whether the vehicle tracks normally. Ask a mechanic to inspect brakes, steering linkages, shocks or struts and underbody parts if there is noise, looseness or uneven tire wear.
Test it cold, then drive it fully warm
If practical, arrange to see the EcoSport before it has been started that day. A cold start can reveal noises or behavior that may be less apparent after warming; it is not a substitute for a professional assessment.
- At startup: Listen for abnormal engine noise, observe whether the engine idles steadily and check for warning lights.
- During the drive: Assess acceleration, engine response, steering, braking and suspension sounds. Test the automatic or manual transmission for smooth, predictable operation without assuming that one symptom identifies a particular fault.
- After it is warm: Reassess idle, warning lights, engine behavior and shift quality. Ford’s inspection checklist calls for checking engine and transmission operation both cold and hot. The Ford checklist outlines its road-test checks.
Get an independent pre-purchase inspection
Have a qualified, independent mechanic inspect the specific vehicle before you commit. Ask for a written report that separates safety concerns from upcoming maintenance and includes estimates for needed work. A mechanic can investigate leaks, noises, warning lights, uneven wear, prior damage and transmission behavior more thoroughly than a brief test drive.

A handheld OBD-II code reader can help reveal stored diagnostic codes, but it does not replace a physical inspection, a qualified diagnosis or a VIN-based recall check. Ford bulletin 19-2168, dated May 28, 2019, describes some 2018–2019 EcoSports with a 1.0L EcoBoost engine and automatic transmission that may show a malfunction indicator lamp and powertrain codes related to loss of power or misfire. Ford attributes the described condition to engine-control harness chafing near the transmission and exhaust heat shield and directs technicians to inspect and repair harness routing. It is a technical service bulletin for that configuration, not a recall or proof that every EcoSport has the issue. If a vehicle has relevant symptoms or codes, request a qualified diagnosis and repair records. See Ford TSB 19-2168.

If comparing two EcoSports, assess each using the same evidence: VIN-specific recall status and repair proof; engine, transmission and build details; service records; cold and warm operating behavior; independent inspection findings; condition of tires, brakes and suspension; damage history; and estimated near-term repair costs. The documented recalls and bulletin apply to defined configurations and do not establish a best model year or a universal reliability ranking.
