Do not rely on the dashboard’s remaining-miles number or a seller’s unqualified “battery is good” statement. Before buying a used electric car, identify the exact battery and warranty, obtain a dated report that explains how health was measured, arrange a vehicle-compatible diagnostic or independent inspection when the decision warrants it, and observe range, state of charge and charging behavior on a drive. Then judge the verified evidence against your own trips, charging access, asking price and tolerance for repair risk.
No single state-of-health percentage proves that every used EV is a good or bad purchase. A useful result always has a source, test method, date, vehicle identity and warranty context.

What “battery health” means on a used EV
Battery health is not one universal dashboard metric. A report may estimate remaining usable capacity, identify faults, or simply record information read from the vehicle’s battery-management system. Those are different findings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →State of health is an estimate, not a certificate
State of health (SoH) is commonly expressed as a percentage relative to the battery when new. The figure is useful only when you know who calculated it, which vehicle data or algorithm was used, when it was measured and what the report defines as capacity. Two tools can produce different results from the same car because they use different data, correction factors or definitions of usable capacity.

Ask whether the number represents total pack capacity, the energy available to the driver, or an estimate generated by the battery-management system. A fault scan can show trouble codes without measuring capacity, while a capacity estimate can look normal even though a separate component needs attention.
Why the range display cannot settle the question
The estimated range shown after a charge is calculated from recent driving, speed, temperature, terrain, tire pressure, climate-control use and other conditions. It is therefore an operating estimate, not a laboratory capacity test. Use it as one observation alongside a diagnostic report and the car’s history.
Step 1: Identify the exact car before checking its battery
Battery warranties and diagnostic procedures are vehicle- and market-specific. Record the following before accepting a report or booking an inspection:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Make, model, model year and body style.
- Battery size or trim, including any long-range, standard-range or performance version.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Current odometer reading.
- Country or market in which the car was sold and registered.
- Current owner and any available service or vehicle-history records.
Ask the seller directly whether the traction battery has been repaired, replaced, opened, or subject to a warranty claim. Request invoices or work orders rather than relying on a verbal description. Compare the VIN and mileage on every report with the car you are viewing. A report for another trim, market or battery pack is not evidence about this vehicle.
Request a dated battery document
Ask for a battery-health, service or diagnostic report produced recently enough to reflect the car’s current mileage and condition. The document should identify the vehicle and test date and should name the organization or technician that produced it. If the seller provides only a screenshot showing a percentage, ask for the complete report and the definitions behind the number.

Useful questions include:
- What exactly was measured: estimated capacity, fault codes, cell balance, charging performance, or another item?
- Which tool, software or manufacturer procedure was used?
- Was the test accepted for a warranty decision, or was it an informal scan?
- What battery temperature, charge level or other conditions applied during the test?
- Were any codes cleared before the test?
These questions do not turn an estimate into a guarantee; they reveal how much weight the result deserves.
Step 2: Obtain manufacturer or dealer diagnostics when available
A manufacturer or franchised dealer may have access to vehicle-specific diagnostic routines and service records that a generic scan tool cannot read. Columbia University Transportation’s Used Electric Vehicle Guide recommends an onboard-diagnostics check by a reputable dealer or an experienced independent EV mechanic.
Do not assume a dealer-branded report automatically measures battery capacity. Ask the service department to state whether the procedure evaluates capacity, degradation, isolation faults, cell-voltage spread, thermal faults, charging faults, or only stored trouble codes. Also ask whether the result is the procedure the manufacturer uses when deciding a warranty claim.
If a dealer refuses to provide a usable report, gives only an unexplained pass/fail result, or cannot confirm that the test applies to the exact battery version, treat the missing information as unresolved risk rather than as a clean bill of health.
Step 3: Arrange an independent EV battery assessment if the decision depends on it
An independent inspection is especially valuable when the seller has no informative report, the car is near the end of its battery warranty, the asking price assumes unusually high range, or a battery problem would make the purchase unaffordable.

What independent services can provide
DEKRA describes an independent battery test that uses diagnostic data and produces a remaining-capacity report. TÜV Rheinland describes a Battery Quick Check that generates a state-of-health report using algorithms supplied by manufacturers. These services illustrate two important points: a specialist can provide evidence beyond a dashboard estimate, and the method may depend on manufacturer data.
Before paying for any provider, confirm:
- That the provider supports the exact make, model year, battery and market.
- Whether the test is performed at a workshop, during a road test, or remotely from vehicle data.
- What the report contains and whether it states an uncertainty or limitation.
- How long the appointment takes and whether the seller must deliver the car at a particular charge level.
- Whether the result is intended for buyers, resale documentation, fleet decisions or warranty claims.
Availability, vehicle coverage and pricing vary by location and are not universal. Obtain a current quotation and written scope before booking. An independent report is an additional data point, not a promise that the battery will not fail later.
Step 4: Use an OBD-II scanner only when it supports the exact EV
Consumer Reports notes that a buyer can obtain a basic battery-health report from a mechanic or purchase an OBD-II scanner and software. This can be a practical option, but “OBD-II compatible” does not mean that a generic scanner can read every high-voltage battery value.
Check compatibility before buying hardware
- Identify the exact model year, trim and battery configuration.
- Check the scanner and software documentation for that specific vehicle, not merely the manufacturer name.
- Confirm which data the software can display: usable capacity estimate, battery-management-system codes, cell voltages, temperatures, charge history or only generic emissions codes.
- Ask whether the software can export or save a dated report that you can show to a mechanic or seller.
- Use a qualified technician if the procedure requires access to high-voltage systems or an interpretation you cannot make safely.
A basic scan is supporting evidence. It may miss a problem that is not currently logged, may show values that require model-specific interpretation, and does not prove that every cell, module, contactor or cooling component is healthy. Never open the battery enclosure or disconnect high-voltage components as a buyer inspection.
Step 5: Test-drive the car and watch state-of-charge behavior
Consumer Reports recommends watching the range and state-of-charge indicators during a drive and looking for significant drops. Make the observation systematic rather than treating a short loop as a capacity test.

Before moving
- Photograph or record the battery percentage, displayed range, odometer and outside temperature.
- Note whether the battery is cold, recently fast-charged, or already warm from driving.
- Record the selected drive mode and whether heating, air conditioning or defrost is running.
During the drive
- Use a route long enough to reveal behavior but safe for the seller and vehicle. Include the type of roads you normally drive when practical.
- Watch whether the state-of-charge percentage falls in a way that appears consistent with the distance and conditions.
- Note abrupt percentage changes, a sudden collapse in displayed range, warning messages, reduced-power operation or inconsistent regenerative braking.
- Record the distance traveled, weather, speed, traffic, elevation and climate-control use. These factors can explain ordinary variation.
- At the end, photograph the remaining percentage and displayed range.
Do not convert the result into a precise battery-capacity percentage. A short test cannot separate normal estimation changes from degradation, and a cold or fast-charged battery may behave differently from one at normal operating temperature.
If the seller permits charging
Observe the car charging from a known starting percentage and note whether the session begins normally, holds its expected power and ends without warnings. Compare the vehicle’s behavior with the equipment and conditions available at the inspection site. There is no standardized buyer-run charging test that produces a valid battery-health result across all EVs, so use charging behavior as corroboration rather than a pass/fail test.
Step 6: Read the battery warranty, not just the brochure
Find the actual warranty document for the vehicle and market. Verify both calendar and mileage limits, the in-service date, transfer rules and exclusions. A warranty may cover a battery that fails, yet provide limited or different protection for gradual capacity loss.
Questions to answer from the written terms
- How much time and mileage remain?
- Does coverage transfer automatically to the next owner, or is registration required?
- Is there a stated minimum-capacity threshold, and how is capacity measured?
- Are degradation, normal wear, accident damage, flood exposure, aftermarket modifications or missed maintenance excluded?
- Must repairs be performed through a particular network or in a particular country?
- Does the warranty cover labor, towing, diagnostic charges and replacement with a new, remanufactured or equivalent pack?
Columbia University Transportation’s guide cautions that failure coverage and capacity degradation can be treated differently. Its older make-specific examples should not be generalized to current models; rely on the warranty for the exact VIN and market, and ask the manufacturer or dealer to confirm any ambiguous clause in writing.

| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer or dealer diagnostic | Vehicle-specific faults and, when the procedure includes it, a manufacturer-defined capacity or battery assessment. | That future degradation or unrelated high-voltage components will never require repair. |
| Independent battery test | A separate assessment of diagnostic data and, depending on the provider, a remaining-capacity or SoH report. | Universal accuracy across every model, market or battery version. |
| OBD-II scan | Accessible battery-management data and stored codes when the hardware and software support the exact vehicle. | A complete inspection of every cell, module and pack component. |
| Dashboard range estimate | What the car predicts from recent use at that moment. | A certified measurement of battery capacity. |
| Observed drive or charge behavior | Whether the car’s indicators and charging operation appear consistent during your conditions. | A standardized, model-independent capacity result. |
| Warranty document | The manufacturer’s remaining obligations, limits and claim process. | Proof that the battery is healthy today. |
Match verified range to your actual trips
Start with your routine, not the car’s original advertised range. List your longest regular day, winter or hot-weather conditions, motorway speeds, hills, passenger or cargo loads and access to home or workplace charging. Decide how much reserve you need when a public charger is occupied or unavailable.
A battery with less remaining capacity may still be practical for a short commute with reliable overnight charging. The same car may be unsuitable for a driver who regularly makes long motorway trips and has few charging alternatives. This is a use-case decision, not a universal SoH cutoff.
Use a simple decision rule
- Evidence supports the need: The report is dated and vehicle-specific, observed behavior is consistent, warranty protection is clear, and the verified range covers your trips. Proceed to normal mechanical and legal checks.
- Evidence is incomplete but the price reflects uncertainty: Make the missing report or an independent test a condition of purchase, or negotiate only after assigning a realistic repair reserve.
- Evidence conflicts: Pause. Ask the seller to explain the difference, repeat the test through a qualified provider, or walk away. Do not average incompatible percentages into a reassuring number.
- Range does not meet your needs: Decline regardless of a favorable price. A discount does not create charging access or additional usable energy.
Warning signs that deserve a pause
- The seller will not provide the VIN, a dated report or permission for an independent inspection.
- A battery percentage is presented without the test method, date, mileage or organization that produced it.
- The report belongs to a different trim, battery size, market or vehicle.
- The dashboard range falls sharply during an ordinary drive without an explanation tied to conditions.
- The car shows battery, charging, isolation, thermal or reduced-power warnings.
- The warranty has expired, does not transfer, or covers failure but not capacity loss, while the asking price assumes near-new range.
- An OBD tool claims broad compatibility but cannot identify the battery-management system or explain the values it returns.
None of these observations by itself proves a failed battery. Together they justify delaying payment until the uncertainty is resolved.
Buyer’s checklist before leaving a deposit
- Write down the VIN, model year, trim, battery configuration, mileage and market.
- Obtain the complete dated battery or service report and identify its author and method.
- Ask about repairs, replacements, warranty claims and supporting invoices.
- Confirm whether a dealer or qualified independent EV mechanic can run a vehicle-specific diagnostic.
- If using an OBD-II tool, verify exact software compatibility and the data it can read before the appointment.
- Record starting and ending state of charge, displayed range, distance, temperature and climate use during the drive.
- Observe charging when practical, documenting warnings or abnormal interruptions.
- Read the written warranty for remaining time, mileage, transfer, capacity-loss terms and exclusions.
- Compare the evidence with your longest regular trips and available charging.
- Make the purchase conditional on resolving any battery uncertainty that would change your decision.
Final buying perspective
The safest approach is layered: documents establish identity and history; a manufacturer, dealer or qualified independent test provides vehicle-specific diagnostic evidence; a carefully recorded drive checks whether the car behaves consistently; and the warranty and price determine how much remaining risk you can reasonably accept. Treat an unexplained percentage, a generic scan or a single range estimate as incomplete information. Buy only when the evidence supports the range you need and the written protection and price make the remaining uncertainty acceptable.
