How to Check a Used CNG Car Before Buying: Tank, Kit and Service Inspection Checklist

Before buying a used CNG car, verify the cylinder’s identity and service life, match the kit and vehicle records, look for damage without touching high-pressure parts, and make the sale conditional on a qualified CNG inspection.

Do not buy a used CNG car on the basis of a clean-looking engine bay or a seller’s old certificate. Match the vehicle and CNG-system identity to the paperwork, read the cylinder’s service-life markings, look for damage without touching pressurized parts, and make the sale conditional on a fresh inspection by a qualified CNG facility. A walk-around and a generic code scan cannot certify a high-pressure fuel system.

Inspection intervals and approval rules depend on the country where the car is registered, the vehicle’s weight and whether the system was factory-installed or retrofitted. Establish those facts first, then apply the local rules and the exact cylinder and kit instructions.

Why a used CNG car needs a different pre-purchase check

A CNG vehicle combines an ordinary car with a high-pressure fuel system. The cylinder, valves, pressure-relief devices, lines, regulator, venting and electronic controls can remain safety-critical even when the car drives normally. A quiet engine, a full fuel gauge or a recent general service does not prove that the tank is within its labelled service life or that the installation is compliant.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) specifically recommends obtaining the latest CNG tank inspection record and having a qualified facility perform a new inspection before buying a used CNG vehicle (DOE AFDC guidance). Treat that inspection as a purchase condition, not as an optional extra.

Keep three questions separate throughout the inspection:

  • Is this the correct system? Identify the vehicle, cylinder(s), kit, installer and approval or endorsement records.
  • Is the hardware safe and within life? Check markings, condition, mounting, shielding, valves, lines and venting through a qualified inspector.
  • Is the car legally usable here? Confirm the current inspection, registration and periodic-test rules for the jurisdiction and vehicle configuration.

1. Identify the car, cylinder and installation before you inspect it

Confirm the vehicle identity

Photograph or record the vehicle identification number (VIN or local equivalent), registration number, make, model, model year, engine number where used, and odometer reading. Compare those identifiers with the registration, title, service invoices, inspection certificates and any CNG endorsement. Mismatched numbers can indicate an administrative problem, a replacement body or engine, or paperwork from another vehicle.

Determine whether CNG was factory-installed or retrofitted

Ask the seller to state whether the CNG system was installed by the vehicle manufacturer or added later. For a retrofit, record the kit manufacturer and model, installer, installation date, approval number and the date the conversion was endorsed on the registration. Factory systems should still have vehicle-specific service documentation; “factory CNG” is not a substitute for checking the tank and its labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways preventive-maintenance checklist illustrates the records that may be required in a retrofit market: vehicle and model, original equipment manufacturer, retrofit agency, chassis, engine and registration identifiers, and CNG-kit endorsement details (India MoRTH AIS-024/AIS-028 checklist). The form is an India-specific example, not a universal document list, but it shows why a verbal claim that “the kit is approved” is insufficient.

2. Request the records before negotiating a price

Ask for readable copies before you make an offer. A seller who cannot produce basic records may still have a sound car, but you cannot price or accept the risk intelligently without verifying the system.

  • Records of crashes, floods, fires, underbody impacts or heat exposure. These events can require an additional tank inspection even if the car continued to run.
  • Ordinary vehicle records: oil and coolant service, brake and suspension work, timing-belt or chain history, tire age and recalls.

Check that dates and odometer readings progress logically and that the cylinder identification in each report matches the cylinder on the car. An inspection record from another tank, another vehicle or an unidentifiable workshop is not evidence for this car.

3. Read the cylinder markings and calculate remaining labelled life

Find the label without disturbing the system

Ask the seller or a qualified technician to expose the cylinder label or stamped markings. Do not remove shields, loosen fittings, disconnect lines or scrape corrosion yourself. Record the cylinder manufacturer, serial or approval number, type, manufacture date, test or retest dates and any expiry or “do not use after” information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Under the U.S. federal container standard, the required service-life marking states “Do Not Use After” followed by the month and year that ends the manufacturer-recommended service life (49 CFR § 571.304). This federal marking rule applies within its regulatory scope; other countries and cylinder standards can use different formats. Never assume that a missing, illegible or altered date is acceptable.

Interpret the date in the correct jurisdiction

A manufacture date is not automatically an inspection due date. The applicable life limit can depend on cylinder type, manufacturer instructions, national rules and the date of the next required inspection. Have the inspecting facility verify the exact cylinder standard and remaining permissible life rather than calculating it from a generic internet table.

Ask the inspector to explain, in writing, whether the cylinder can remain in service until the next local inspection, needs a retest, or has reached its labelled end of life. If the seller cannot provide a readable identity and date, treat the cylinder’s status as unverified and make a passing professional inspection a condition of purchase.

4. Perform a safe visual check for warning signs

Only inspect what is visible without contacting high-pressure components. Do not tap a cylinder, operate a valve, tighten a fitting, remove a cover or attempt a leak test with household equipment. Mark any concern for the qualified facility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tank and mounting warning signs

  • Visible dents, gouges, cracks, bulges or other impact damage.
  • Rust, pitting, chemical attack, peeling coatings or corrosion around brackets and end fittings.
  • Evidence of fire or excessive heat: blistered paint, heat-discoloured metal, melted plastic or soot.
  • Missing, split or displaced shields and covers that should protect the cylinder and valves from road debris.
  • Crushed, bent or loose mounting straps, brackets or isolation pads.
  • A cylinder that appears to contact the body, exhaust, suspension or cargo equipment.

New Zealand’s official CNG-cylinder inspection criteria reject cylinders with impact damage, corrosion or fire heating, and reject missing, illegible or altered test-date or testing-station marks (NZTA CNG cylinder criteria). Those are New Zealand inspection criteria, not a global legal test, but they are useful warning signs anywhere: stop and obtain a qualified assessment rather than trying to clean or repair the cylinder yourself.

Lines, fittings and underbody condition

Look for lines that are kinked, unsupported, rubbing on metal, close to an exhaust component or coated in oil or dirt that could conceal damage. Note green or white deposits, staining, cracked insulation, improvised clamps, non-original hose sections and wiring repairs. Do not infer that a dry surface proves leak-free operation; a professional pressure or leak test is required.

5. What a qualified CNG inspection should cover

Book a facility that is authorized or trained for the vehicle’s CNG system. The ASE compressed-natural-gas technician guide lists a substantially broader work scope than a visual walk-around (ASE Official Study Guide: Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles, Test F1, 2025). Ask the facility to document each applicable item:

Inspection area What the technician should verify
Cylinder identity and life Type, serial or approval marking, manufacture and test dates, service-life or expiry status, and damage or heat exposure.
Protection and mounting Shields, covers, brackets, straps, clearances, isolation and evidence of movement or impact.
Valves and pressure relief Manual or automatic shut-off valves, pressure-relief devices, caps and connections for correct installation and condition.
Venting Enclosures, vent lines and discharge paths that keep released gas away from the passenger compartment and ignition sources.
Fuel lines and fittings High-pressure and low-pressure lines, unions, seals, routing, abrasion, corrosion and leak-test results.
Regulator and coolant circuit Regulator condition, mounting, coolant hoses, leaks, temperature-related operation and correct connections.
Underhood delivery system Injectors or mixer, shut-off devices, filters, rails, sensors and mechanical condition.
Wiring and electronics Harness routing, connectors, fuses, controller operation, sensor signals and signs of bypassed safety interlocks.
Fill receptacle Condition, cap, mounting, labeling and compatibility with the local filling connector.
Labels and instructions Required warning labels, fuel identification, operating instructions and legibility.
Gauges and controls Pressure or fuel gauges, changeover controls, warning lamps and displayed fault information.
Leak, emissions and performance checks Appropriate leak testing, diagnostic procedure, emissions and driveability verification under the technician’s approved method.
Documentation Inspection result, cylinder and vehicle identity, defects, required repairs, next due date and any legal certificate.

Request the written report, not merely “it passed.” A report should distinguish an immediate safety defect from maintenance recommended later and identify any item that could prevent registration or refueling.

6. Check the inspection interval that applies where you live

There is no single worldwide CNG-tank interval. The following figures are examples from named authorities and must not be substituted for the rules in the car’s registration jurisdiction:

Authority and scope Published requirement or guidance How to use it
U.S. DOE AFDC For light-duty vehicles, tank inspection every 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first; vehicles above 10,000 lb gross vehicle weight rating are listed as once every 12 months. Additional inspection is called for after an incident that could damage the tank (AFDC CNG tank maintenance). Confirm the vehicle class, local adoption and the tank manufacturer’s instructions. Treat the incident rule as a reason for an immediate professional check.
New Zealand Transport Agency The cited NZTA criteria require the cylinder date stamp to be within five years of the next alternative-fuels inspection (NZTA cylinder criteria). Use the exact NZTA inspection pathway and cylinder documentation; do not apply five years as a universal rule.
Brazil INMETRO Its current FAQ states a periodic vehicle safety inspection every 12 months from installation for vehicles with an installed CNG kit (INMETRO periodic-inspection answer, updated 2025). Verify the current Brazilian inspection and certification process for that vehicle and kit.

Ask the registration authority, approved inspection body or vehicle manufacturer for the current rule. A certificate that is valid in one country may have no legal effect in another, and a factory installation can follow different approval paperwork from a retrofit.

7. Test-drive the ordinary car and the CNG system separately

Start with the vehicle’s basic condition

Inspect cold starting, idle quality, acceleration, braking, steering, suspension noise, clutch or transmission operation, tire condition, warning lamps, air conditioning and electrical equipment. Check for overheating, coolant loss, oil contamination and exhaust smoke. These faults can make a car a poor purchase even when the CNG system is sound.

Observe fuel changeover and operation

With the technician’s procedure, observe petrol-to-CNG changeover, CNG-to-petrol fallback, gauge behavior, warning lights and any hesitation, stalling, odor or unusual noise. Do not deliberately run a tank empty or manipulate shut-off valves. Note the conditions when a fault appears and let the technician reproduce it with approved diagnostic equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what an OBD scan can and cannot tell you

A generic OBD-II reader may retrieve supported engine or emissions fault codes, making it a useful additional clue. It cannot inspect cylinder structure, verify a service-life marking, assess mounting or venting, detect every gas leak, or issue a CNG safety certificate. The ASE scope treats diagnosis, emissions and performance verification as technician work, so use a scan as one input to a qualified inspection rather than as a pass/fail substitute (ASE CNG technician guide).

8. Compare two used CNG cars using evidence, not appearance

When two cars seem similar, compare the risk and documentation package in the same order:

Comparison point Questions to answer Decision implication
Tank age and remaining labelled life What are the manufacture, test and “Do Not Use After” details? How much life remains under the applicable rule? A newer tank with clear identity is easier to verify than an older or illegible one, but only the inspector can determine acceptability.
Condition and protection Are shields, mounts, valves and clearances intact? Is there any impact, corrosion or heat history? Visible damage or missing protection requires professional assessment and may make the car uneconomic.
Installation records Do vehicle, kit, installer and endorsement details match the car? Consistent records reduce approval and ownership-transfer uncertainty.
Inspection recency and result When and where was the last qualified inspection, and what defects were corrected? A recent report is useful evidence but does not replace a fresh pre-purchase inspection.
Service and incident history Are regulator, valve, line and repair invoices present? Any crash, fire, flood or underbody impact? Unexplained gaps or an incident should trigger targeted checks before any deposit.
Local compliance and likely work Is the current certificate transferable? What inspection, repair or retest does the authority require? Compare verified repair and compliance needs, not an advertised price alone.

Do not declare one car “safe” because its tank looks cleaner. Use the same qualified facility and the same written checklist for both vehicles.

9. Make the purchase conditional and handle red flags

Put the inspection condition in writing

Write into the offer or sales agreement that the purchase depends on a satisfactory inspection by a qualified CNG facility, confirmation of cylinder identity and remaining service life, and verification of required approvals and certificates. Specify who pays for the inspection, what happens if a safety defect is found, and whether the deposit is refundable. Keep the report and all supplied records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Red flags that should pause the deal

  • The seller refuses access to the cylinder label or says the date is irrelevant.
  • VIN, registration, kit, cylinder or installer numbers do not match.
  • There is no inspection history and the seller will not allow a fresh qualified inspection.
  • Any cylinder or valve shows impact, corrosion, fire or heat damage.
  • Shields, mounts, vent lines, caps or warning labels are missing or improvised.
  • A warning lamp, gas odor, pressure loss, rough changeover or unexplained stalling occurs.
  • The seller proposes sealing, painting, welding, tightening or replacing a high-pressure part before inspection.
  • The car’s certificate is expired, from another jurisdiction, or cannot be verified with the issuing body.

Do not drive or refuel a vehicle that smells of gas or has suspected high-pressure damage. Move away from ignition sources and contact an appropriately qualified CNG service provider or emergency service according to local instructions.

10. A practical appointment-day checklist

  1. Before viewing: obtain the VIN or registration number, ask whether the system is factory or retrofit, and request photos or copies of the latest CNG and vehicle records.
  2. At the car: verify identifiers, record the cylinder markings without disturbing components, and compare the paperwork with the physical installation.
  3. Visual screen: note impact, corrosion, fire or heat evidence, missing shields, damaged mounts, suspect routing and missing labels. Do not touch pressurized hardware.
  4. Road test: evaluate normal vehicle behavior and authorized fuel changeover while recording warning lamps, odors, hesitation and gauge behavior.
  5. Professional inspection: take the car and records to a qualified CNG facility for cylinder, mounting, venting, regulator, lines, valves, electronics, leak, emissions and performance checks.
  6. Verify the result: obtain a written report identifying the cylinder, defects, repairs required, next due date and any certificate or registration limitation.
  7. Decide: buy only when identity, service life, compliance and repair exposure are documented. If evidence is missing, renegotiate only after the inspection or walk away.

What a generic checklist cannot establish

No buyer checklist can certify a pressurized cylinder from photographs. It cannot determine hidden composite damage, internal valve condition, leak rate, regulator performance or whether a particular repair meets the applicable standard. Those questions require the equipment, training and authority of a qualified CNG facility. The safest purchase decision is therefore evidence-based: complete records, readable cylinder markings, a current local-compliance check and a fresh professional inspection.
