The safest way to shop for a first-generation Ford Maverick is to evaluate the individual truck, not the model year in the abstract. For a 2022 Maverick, record the 17-character VIN, identify whether it has the 2.5L hybrid or 2.0L EcoBoost powertrain, run the VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup, have a Ford dealer check service campaigns, review repair invoices, and arrange an independent inspection. During the road test, pay special attention to low-speed hybrid braking, the instrument-cluster self-check, warning messages, starting behavior and any history of 12-volt battery failures.
Recall listings and technical service bulletins describe conditions that can occur on some vehicles. They do not prove that every 2022 Maverick is affected, nor do they provide a failure-rate estimate. Your purchase decision should follow the specific truck’s VIN records, physical condition, road-test results and inspection report.

What “first-year” means for a used Maverick
The Maverick launched for the 2022 model year, making 2022 the first model year of this generation. A used-truck inspection therefore needs to distinguish documented 2022 issues from ordinary wear and from later software or service information that may apply only to certain VINs.
Start by confirming the truck’s build information rather than inferring anything from a trim badge or appearance. The two principal powertrains are the 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) system and the 2.0L EcoBoost gasoline engine. The documented brake bulletin and several early service programs discussed below are powertrain- or VIN-specific.

- Record the odometer, build date if available, engine, drivetrain and any warning messages.
- Request the maintenance file, warranty repairs, recall invoices and records of battery replacement or jump starts.
A clean-looking truck with an incomplete history is not equivalent to one with documented repairs. Conversely, an open campaign is not automatically a reason to reject the truck if the remedy is available and the seller agrees to have it completed before delivery.
Step 1: Run a VIN-specific recall and service check
Use the actual 17-character VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. A year/make/model search is useful for learning what has been announced, but only a VIN result can indicate whether a particular truck is in a defined recall population. Save the result as a screenshot or printout and ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN for Ford safety recalls, customer satisfaction programs, technical service information and completed repair history.
What the NHTSA result can and cannot tell you
- It can show whether the specific VIN currently needs an identified safety-recall repair.
- It may not show recalls that were announced very recently while the affected VIN population is still being identified.
- It does not display every non-safety service campaign or international recall.
- It does not show recalls more than 15 years old.
- A “no unrepaired recalls” result is not a complete service-history record and does not prove that every campaign or warranty repair was performed.
Ask the seller for the repair order for each completed remedy. The invoice should identify the VIN, date, mileage, campaign or recall number and the work performed. If a seller says a repair was completed but cannot produce documentation, have the dealer verify it before you pay a deposit.

Use the dealer check to resolve conflicting records
Dealer records are particularly important when an online result is unclear, a recall was recently announced, or the truck changed ownership across states. Tell the service adviser that you are considering purchase and ask for a VIN-specific printout of open and completed campaigns. Ford technical bulletins can be superseded, and applicability or warranty coverage can depend on the individual vehicle, so a bulletin number alone is not proof that the truck qualifies for free work.
Step 2: Inspect documented 2022 hybrid issues
The following checks apply primarily to a 2022 Maverick with the 2.5L FHEV powertrain. Confirm the engine and VIN before treating any item as applicable.
Low-speed brake grabbing: TSB 23-2060
Ford Motor Company’s TSB 23-2060, dated February 22, 2023, covers some 2022 Mavericks with the 2.5L FHEV system. Ford describes a condition in which the brakes can grab during light braking at or below 6 mph (10 km/h), potentially because of ABS-module software. The bulletin states: “Some 2022 Maverick vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit a condition where the brakes grab during light braking at or below 6 mph (10 km/h).”

- With the vehicle warmed up, make several gentle stops from walking speed and from approximately 6 mph.
- Keep steady, light pressure on the pedal and notice whether braking effort changes abruptly just before the truck stops.
- Repeat in both forward and reverse, without deliberately provoking a skid or emergency stop.
- Ask the seller whether an ABS software reprogramming was performed and request the invoice.
A single imperfect stop is not a diagnosis; road slope, wet pavement and driver technique can change pedal feel. Repeated grabbing or an inconsistent transition between regenerative and friction braking warrants a Ford-capable inspection. The bulletin itself directs a Ford or Lincoln dealer to determine applicability, and warranty eligibility depends on the vehicle and coverage.
High-voltage harness layover program 22B39
Customer Satisfaction Program 22B39 concerns harness layover on certain 2022 Maverick 2.5L FHEV vehicles. Ask the dealer to verify whether the VIN was included and whether the procedure was completed. Request the repair order rather than relying on a seller’s description of the work.
The procedure requires de-energizing the high-voltage system and handling its connector. Do not remove hybrid covers, disconnect orange cables or attempt to inspect, reposition or repair the harness yourself. Any concern about damaged insulation, a warning message or an incomplete campaign belongs with an authorized technician trained on the high-voltage system.
Under-hood fire recall 22S47
Safety Recall 22S47 addressed certain 2022 Maverick vehicles with 2.5L HEV/PHEV engines. Ford reported isolated engine-manufacturing issues involving possible breaches in the engine block or oil pan. Oil or fuel vapor could then collect near an ignition source and ignite. Ford’s prescribed remedy modified the front under-engine shield and active grille shutter.
Check completion by VIN and request the repair order describing the shield and active-grille-shutter modification. Do not assume every 2022 hybrid is affected: the recall’s model-year and powertrain scope identifies a defined population, not the entire model line. During a visual inspection, note missing or loose underbody panels, fresh oil residue and evidence of previous engine work, but do not substitute a visual check for VIN verification.

Instrument-panel cluster recall 24C01 / NHTSA 24V140
Ford’s March 2024 notice says certain 2022–2023 Mavericks may have an instrument panel cluster (IPC) that does not properly illuminate warning lights or gauges. The notice’s wording is: “The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) may not properly illuminate warning lights or gauges.” The remedy is a software update, checked by VIN.
Perform the cluster check before driving:
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Confirm that the speedometer and other gauges illuminate and complete their normal self-check.
- Verify that the warning telltales appear during the bulb check and then go out after the system starts, except for indicators that should remain on.
- Start the truck and look for blank displays, missing segments, warning messages or gauges that fail to respond.
- Ask for proof that recall 24C01 was completed if the VIN is included.
Ford’s owner letter did not issue a stop-driving instruction for this specific recall, but an applicable software remedy should be scheduled promptly. A dark or incomplete cluster is a reason to postpone the purchase until the repair is documented.
12-volt battery drain and no-start history
A Ford service message issued in 2026, SSM 54621, describes some 2022–2025 Maverick hybrids that may experience 12-volt battery drain and a no-crank/no-start condition after an air-conditioning control-module software update. The message said engineering expected a repair in late second quarter 2026. That projected date has passed, so ask a Ford dealer what remedy is currently available and whether the VIN or its software-update history is involved.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Question the seller directly about:
- Repeated jump starts or roadside-assistance calls.
- One or more 12-volt battery replacements.
- Deep-sleep, battery-saving or related dashboard notices.
- Intermittent no-crank or no-start events that later disappeared.
- Whether an air-conditioning control-module update preceded the problem.
Inspect battery terminals for looseness or corrosion, but do not declare the hybrid system healthy based on a voltage reading alone. A no-start history requires a Ford-capable diagnosis and confirmation of the current software remedy. The service message is manufacturer information reproduced through a technical-document host; dealer confirmation is appropriate before relying on it for a particular VIN.
Step 3: Conduct a structured road test
Drive the truck long enough to test cold starting, low-speed control and normal-speed operation. Ask the owner not to warm it up before you arrive if possible. Follow local safety rules and do not test a vehicle with an active brake or severe warning condition on public roads.
Before moving
- With the ignition on, complete the instrument-cluster self-check described above.
- Confirm that the brake, ABS, airbag, powertrain and hybrid-system telltales behave normally.
- Check that the truck starts promptly without a no-crank pause, multiple attempts or a jump pack.
- Listen for warning chimes and read every message before clearing anything.
- Verify that the parking brake releases and that the brake pedal feels firm while stationary.
At low speed
Make repeated, gentle stops below 6 mph to screen for the documented hybrid brake symptom. The pedal should respond consistently rather than suddenly grabbing. Also check smooth engagement in reverse, steering effort at parking-lot speed and whether any warning appears when transitioning from electric operation to engine operation.

At road speed
Use a route that includes smooth pavement, a moderate hill and a safe stop from normal traffic speed. Check straight-line tracking, steering-wheel vibration, brake-pedal pulsation, tire noise and suspension knocks. These observations are general used-vehicle screening points, not proof of a specific Maverick recall condition. Note any warning message immediately and photograph the display if it remains visible.

Park, switch the vehicle off and restart it after several minutes. Confirm that it restarts normally and that no new warning remains. Look underneath for fresh fluid, loose shields or hanging trim, and compare the engine-bay temperature and smell with the seller’s description of recent work. Do not touch high-voltage components.
Step 4: Use an OBD-II scan only as a screening tool
A generic OBD-II reader may reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes, but it may not communicate with every Ford or hybrid module. It cannot verify that a recall was completed, certify the condition of the high-voltage battery or establish that a software campaign was performed.
If you bring a reader, scan before clearing anything and save the code numbers and module names. Do not let the seller erase codes immediately before your inspection. Share the results with the mechanic, especially if there are codes relating to the ABS, battery-management, hybrid-control, restraint or instrument-cluster systems.
Ford service documentation describes module programming and diagnostic-code procedures intended for trained professionals. Unresolved codes, brake grabbing, battery drain, warning lights, stalling or incomplete campaign records justify a Ford-capable pre-purchase inspection rather than a second consumer scan.
Step 5: Arrange an independent inspection
Choose a mechanic who can inspect Ford vehicles and, for a hybrid, has appropriate hybrid diagnostic capability. The inspection should be independent of the seller and completed before the purchase contract becomes nonrefundable.

Give the inspector the right information
- Provide the VIN, powertrain and the saved recall lookup.
- Show every warning-message photograph and OBD code.
- Describe any low-speed brake grabbing, no-start event or jump-start history.
- Ask the shop to verify open campaigns with Ford if its equipment or access permits.
Ask for findings in writing
The report should separate safety concerns, likely near-term repairs and ordinary wear. Request photographs of underbody damage, tire and brake measurements, fluid leaks, collision repairs and any missing shields. If the shop cannot evaluate the hybrid high-voltage system, have a qualified Ford or hybrid specialist perform that portion before you make a decision.
Compare two candidate Mavericks on the same evidence
When two trucks appear similar, compare documented evidence rather than choosing solely by price or trim.
| Comparison area | Candidate A | Candidate B | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|

| Hybrid history | 12-volt replacements, jump starts and no-crank events | 12-volt replacements, jump starts and no-crank events | A documented pattern is more important than a seller’s assurance that the issue was temporary. |
| Independent inspection | Written findings, codes, underbody, tires and brakes | Written findings, codes, underbody, tires and brakes | Use the inspection to price repairs or walk away. |
Red flags that should change the deal
- The seller will not provide the VIN or refuses an independent inspection.
- The VIN result shows an open safety recall and the seller will not arrange the remedy.
- Repair invoices are missing for a claimed harness, fire-risk or cluster repair.
- The hybrid grabs during repeated gentle stops below 6 mph.
- The instrument cluster fails its self-check, leaves gauges blank or does not illuminate warning telltales.
- The truck needs a jump start, has repeated no-crank events or shows unexplained battery-drain history.
- Warning lights return after being cleared or diagnostic codes cannot be explained.
- Underbody shields are missing, loose or inconsistent with the documented recall repair.
None of these observations by itself establishes the probability of a defect. They identify reasons to pause, obtain records or require a qualified diagnosis before committing money.
Buyer’s document and inspection checklist
- Write down the complete 17-character VIN and confirm it on the truck and paperwork.
- Identify the engine and drivetrain from VIN or dealer records.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and save the result.
- Ask a Ford dealer for open and completed recalls, service campaigns and repair history.
- Obtain invoices for 22B39, 22S47 and 24C01 when applicable.
- Ask specifically about 12-volt battery replacements, jump starts and no-start events.
- Perform the ignition-on cluster self-check.
- Road-test repeated gentle stops at or below 6 mph if the truck is a 2.5L FHEV.
- Scan for codes without erasing them, treating the scan as preliminary.
- Pay for an independent inspection by a Ford-capable mechanic before the sale is final.
- Put any promised repair, price adjustment or “repair after purchase” agreement in writing.
Making the purchase decision
A used 2022 Maverick can remain a sensible candidate when the VIN check is clear or all applicable remedies are documented, the cluster works, the hybrid brakes behave consistently, the truck starts normally and an independent inspection finds no unresolved safety issue. A low asking price does not compensate for missing records or a seller who will not permit diagnosis.
There is no authoritative failure-rate statistic in the documented material for these conditions. The 6 mph (10 km/h) figure in TSB 23-2060 is a symptom threshold, not a statement about how often the problem occurs. Treat recalls, service messages and technical bulletins as targeted inspection instructions, then base the final decision on this truck’s evidence.
