How to Charge a Volkswagen ID.4 Safely When a Battery Recall Limits Charging to 80%

Interim guidance for recalled Volkswagen ID.4s: set an 80% charge limit, avoid Level 3 DC fast charging, follow the parking instructions, and confirm recall status by VIN.

If your Volkswagen ID.4 is covered by an open high-voltage battery recall, follow the interim instructions in the notice for your vehicle until an authorized Volkswagen dealer completes the recall repair: limit charging to 80%, avoid Level 3 DC fast chargers, park outdoors immediately after charging, and do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight. Transport Canada’s notice also says to park away from other vehicles or structures. These are precautionary recall instructions, not a guarantee that charging at 80% is risk-free.

What to do before the recall repair

For an affected ID.4 whose recall remedy is still outstanding, treat the recall notice—not ordinary range or battery-care advice—as the authority for charging. Volkswagen’s 2026 NHTSA filing for campaign 93EW gives four interim directions: set the high-voltage battery’s charge limit to 80%, avoid Level 3 DC chargers, park outdoors immediately after charging, and do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight. Transport Canada’s notice adds that the vehicle should be parked away from other vehicles or structures.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Set the battery charge limit to 80%. This is a temporary recall measure for affected vehicles, not a general recommendation for every ID.4 owner.
  • Do not use a Level 3 DC fast charger while the recall remedy remains incomplete.
  • After charging, park outdoors promptly. In Canada, follow the additional direction to keep the vehicle away from other vehicles or structures.
  • Do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight.
  • Arrange the recall repair with an authorized Volkswagen dealer and maintain the interim precautions while waiting.

The 80% limit does not eliminate the concern identified by the recall, and the reviewed notices do not provide an individualized safety clearance for any particular vehicle. Do not override the limit or treat a charging accessory, app setting, or different charging location as a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These measures are meant to be used together while the recall is open. Reaching the 80% target does not cancel the advice about charger type or where to park after charging. Likewise, choosing an AC charger does not remove the 80% limit or the parking directions. Keep following the notice that applies to your VIN until the dealer confirms that the recall remedy has been completed.

If your day-to-day routine conflicts with one of the instructions—for example, you normally charge in a garage overnight—change the routine while you wait and ask an authorized dealer how to proceed. The notices do not give an exception based on a particular garage, charging schedule, wall box, or expected trip. Nor do they set out an alternate percentage for owners who need more driving range. Do not raise the target above the specified interim limit to accommodate a trip without guidance from Volkswagen.

How to set your ID.4 to charge to 80%

Volkswagen’s 2024 ID.4 Quick Start Guide for the 62 kWh variant documents setting the target in the myVW app. The menu labels or layout may differ by model year or software version, so use the vehicle’s own manual or contact Volkswagen support if the documented controls are not present.

  1. Open the myVW app and select your ID.4’s vehicle card.
  2. Open the three-dot menu on the vehicle card.
  3. Select “Battery settings.”
  4. Turn on “Battery Care Mode” to set the target state of charge to 80%, or use the target-charge slider if that control is shown.
  5. Check the displayed target and confirm it reads 80% before charging. If the app or vehicle does not offer a way to apply the recall limit, ask Volkswagen or an authorized dealer how to set it for your vehicle rather than guessing at an alternate setting.

The guide documents the app path; it does not establish that every ID.4 software version uses identical wording or menus. If the setting appears different, do not assume that a range estimate, a dashboard battery display, or a charger’s own controls have changed the vehicle’s high-voltage battery limit. Confirm the limit through the vehicle-specific instructions or support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the important check is the target state of charge shown for the vehicle—not simply that Battery Care Mode appears in a menu. If the app shows a slider, verify that its setting is at 80%; if Battery Care Mode is the control, confirm that it has been enabled and that the indicated target is 80%. The 2024 guide supports these controls for the described variant, but it does not promise the same interface on every model year.

If you have more than one vehicle in the app, make sure you have opened the ID.4’s card before changing its battery settings. If the app is unavailable or the controls do not respond, do not assume that a previous setting remains active or that a charger can enforce the recall instruction instead. Consult the manual for the specific vehicle or contact Volkswagen support or a dealer with the VIN and ask how to confirm the 80% target. Do not install an aftermarket device or change a setting in a way that overrides the vehicle’s target.

Which charging methods are covered by the guidance?

The recall’s specific charging restriction is to avoid Level 3 DC charging. Volkswagen’s 2023 ID.4 Quick Start Guide describes charging primarily with AC at a charging station or wall box, including Level 2 home charging. That distinction is useful when choosing how to charge, but it is not a declaration that every AC charger, home, charging site, or recalled vehicle is risk-free.

Charging method What the cited guidance says How to apply it before repair
Level 3 DC fast charging Volkswagen’s 2026 NHTSA recall filing says to avoid it. Do not use it while the recall remedy is outstanding.
AC charging, including Level 2 at home Volkswagen’s 2023 ID.4 guide describes AC charging at a station or wall box. The recall filing does not declare it risk-free. It is the charging approach described in Volkswagen’s guide, subject to the recall’s 80% limit and parking precautions. Do not interpret this as a safety guarantee.

A charger’s maximum capability does not by itself establish what charging mode the vehicle is using. Follow the recall’s Level 3 restriction and the vehicle’s instructions; do not rely on assumptions about a particular charger or site. Nor should a different charger or charging location be treated as a substitute for completing the recall remedy.

  • 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.

The useful comparison is narrow: the recall filing expressly tells affected owners to avoid Level 3 DC fast charging, while Volkswagen’s 2023 guide describes AC charging, including Level 2 charging from a wall box or at a charging station. The guide’s description of AC charging is not a recall-specific clearance, and it does not say that every AC session is risk-free. Keep the other interim measures in place whichever AC option you use.

If you are unsure whether a public charger is Level 3 DC, do not use it while the restriction applies. Confirm the charger type with its operator or Volkswagen rather than inferring it from the location, appearance, connector, or charging speed. The filings do not give a list of approved charging sites or accessories, and the sources do not support treating a charger’s label or capability as a way to bypass the restriction.

Volkswagen’s 2023 guide names the Electrify Home HomeStation as a home-charging product, but a home charger is an equipment option, not a recall remedy. The recall filings do not recommend buying one, and installing a different charger does not change the vehicle’s recall status or the interim directions. Owners should not spend money on an accessory on the assumption that it resolves the battery concern.

Can you charge a recalled ID.4 in a garage?

The manufacturer-filed interim instruction says not to leave the ID.4 charging indoors overnight and to park it outdoors immediately after charging. It does not say that every indoor charging session is risk-free or provide a time-based indoor charging allowance. The practical course is to follow the notice as written: avoid leaving the vehicle charging indoors overnight, and move it outdoors promptly after charging. In Canada, also park away from other vehicles or structures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your usual charging routine would leave the vehicle indoors overnight, change that routine while the remedy is outstanding. The recall instructions do not give a separate exception for a particular garage, wall box, charging schedule, or household arrangement. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer for guidance if you cannot follow the parking directions; do not assume that setting the battery to 80% makes an otherwise inconsistent arrangement safe.

There is a distinction between what the notices explicitly say and what they do not establish. They say not to leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight and to park it outdoors promptly after charging. They do not specify a maximum number of minutes for an indoor charging session, declare a garage safe for short sessions, or offer a different rule for detached garages. Do not turn the wording into an assurance that a shorter indoor session is risk-free.

Transport Canada’s additional direction is to park away from other vehicles or structures. That is part of the applicable Canadian notice, not a general distance measurement: the cited notice does not supply a number of feet or metres. Follow the actual notice for your market rather than inventing a parking distance. If your property does not make it possible to follow the parking advice, ask Volkswagen or an authorized dealer what to do for your vehicle.

Check whether your specific ID.4 is affected

Model year alone is not enough to determine whether a vehicle is included. The U.S. filings identify two separate Volkswagen campaigns covering potentially involved 2023–2024 ID.4 vehicles. Volkswagen’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 25V836, filed December 3, 2025, identifies campaign 93EV and lists 311 potentially involved vehicles. Its separate report 26V028, filed January 21, 2026, identifies campaign 93EW and lists 670 potentially involved vehicles. Those are separate filing populations; they should not be added together or used to estimate an individual vehicle’s risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find your vehicle identification number (VIN) and check its recall status with Volkswagen or the relevant national recall authority.
  2. Look for the exact campaign and remedy status associated with your VIN; do not infer eligibility from model year or from another ID.4 owner’s notice.
  3. Ask whether the remedy has been completed. A listed recall and a completed repair are different statuses; the filings do not establish the status of an individual vehicle.
  4. Follow the notice for your market. The U.S. filings and Transport Canada notice are jurisdiction-specific. Use the instructions that apply to your vehicle and location.
  5. If the recall is open, arrange service through an authorized Volkswagen dealer and keep following the interim instructions until the repair is complete.

Because more than one campaign is involved, a recall check should identify the campaign by VIN rather than relying on a general news report, a vehicle’s model year, or the number of vehicles in a filing.

The NHTSA-hosted reports describe potentially involved populations, not a list that lets an owner identify an individual vehicle without a VIN check. The 311 vehicles listed in 25V836 and the 670 listed in 26V028 belong to separate filings and separate campaign numbers—93EV and 93EW, respectively. Do not combine the counts into a single estimate or take either count as the number of vehicles that have not yet been repaired.

For vehicles in Canada, Transport Canada Recall 2026018 was updated January 23, 2026. The instructions and campaign identifiers can be jurisdiction-specific, so a U.S. report may not be the right notice to apply to a vehicle in another market. Use the recall lookup and notice relevant to your location, and ask the dealer to confirm the campaign and remedy status using your VIN. If you have received a recall letter, compare its campaign and instructions with the status returned for that VIN.

What the recall repair changes

Volkswagen’s cited filings describe replacement of potentially affected high-voltage battery cell modules as the remedy, at no cost to the owner. The interim charging and parking directions apply while waiting for that remedy; they are not a substitute for it. Have an authorized Volkswagen dealer confirm the repair status for your VIN and explain any vehicle-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not try to repair the battery yourself or assume that a software setting, charger purchase, or decision to charge less often closes the recall. The remedy described in the filings is dealer-performed module replacement, and only the vehicle’s recall status can establish whether that work is still due.

When scheduling service, identify the open campaign associated with your VIN and ask the dealer to confirm that the remedy has been completed, rather than relying only on a general statement that the vehicle was inspected or visited a service department. The filings describe replacement of affected battery cell modules at no cost; they do not describe an owner-paid accessory or an over-the-air setting as the remedy. Continue the interim instructions while waiting for the appointment and until the repair status is confirmed.

The reports do not establish the status of any particular ID.4. A vehicle can be a model year named in a filing without that fact alone proving its VIN is included, and a recall entry does not by itself tell you whether the repair on your own vehicle is complete. Use the dealer or official recall lookup for that vehicle-specific answer.

If the app setting is missing or the instructions conflict

App controls can vary, and recall instructions may differ by campaign or market. If the myVW menu does not match the documented path, or if your vehicle’s notice appears to give different directions, use the vehicle-specific manual and contact Volkswagen support or an authorized dealer with your VIN. For an open recall, do not assume the limit is in effect merely because Battery Care Mode is mentioned in a guide; verify the target shown for your vehicle.

  • If you cannot find a target-charge control, ask the dealer how to set the 80% limit for your ID.4 and software version.
  • If you are unsure whether a charger is Level 3 DC, do not use it while the recall restriction is in effect; confirm the charger type with its operator or Volkswagen.
  • If your routine would leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight or parked close to other vehicles or structures, ask the dealer for directions that fit the applicable notice rather than inventing an exception.
  • If a recall lookup shows no open campaign, verify the result with Volkswagen or the relevant national authority if you have received a notice or are uncertain that the VIN was entered correctly.

When a screen label differs, avoid experimenting with unrelated settings or relying on an estimate of remaining driving range as proof that the limit is applied. The vehicle-specific manual, Volkswagen support, or an authorized dealer can help identify the appropriate control for the model year and software version. Give the dealer the VIN and describe the exact control or message you see so the guidance can be tied to your vehicle.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you

The U.S. recall filings’ counts describe potentially involved vehicles in their respective reports: 311 in 25V836 and 670 in 26V028. They are not counts of fires, failures, or vehicles currently awaiting repair, and they do not quantify the probability that a particular ID.4 will experience a problem. The filings also do not provide an independent test showing that charging to 80% removes the risk. Use the figures to distinguish the filings, not to make a personal risk calculation.

The same caution applies to charging choices. Volkswagen’s guide is useful for understanding the documented AC charging approach and myVW controls, while the recall filings provide the temporary restrictions. Neither establishes an individualized safety clearance, and no figure in the cited notices can be used to calculate the risk for a specific vehicle. The appropriate next steps remain checking the VIN, following the applicable notice, and arranging the no-cost dealer remedy if it is due.

Can I use a fast charger with the ID.4 battery recall?

Volkswagen’s 2026 NHTSA filing for campaign 93EW says affected owners should avoid Level 3 DC chargers until the remedy is complete. If you are not certain that a charger is AC rather than Level 3 DC, do not use it while the restriction applies; check with the operator or Volkswagen. The cited guidance does not declare every other charger risk-free.

Can I charge my recalled ID.4 in my garage?

The interim instruction says not to leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight and to park outdoors immediately after charging. It does not define a safe indoor charging duration or say that every indoor session is risk-free. In Canada, the notice also says to park away from other vehicles or structures. If you cannot follow the directions, ask an authorized dealer for advice rather than assuming 80% charging makes a different arrangement safe.

How do I know if my ID.4 is affected?

Check the VIN with Volkswagen or the recall authority for your market, then confirm the exact campaign and whether its remedy is complete. Model year alone is not enough. The U.S. reports 25V836 (campaign 93EV) and 26V028 (campaign 93EW) list separate potentially involved populations of 311 and 670 vehicles; those counts do not establish an individual vehicle’s eligibility or repair status.

Does charging to 80% eliminate the battery concern?

No such guarantee is stated in the recall filings. The 80% limit is an interim manufacturer instruction for affected vehicles, to be followed alongside the Level 3 DC and parking precautions until the remedy is completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the recall repair, and will it cost me?

The cited Volkswagen filings describe no-cost replacement of potentially affected high-voltage battery cell modules by an authorized dealer. Confirm the campaign and repair status for your VIN, and continue the interim instructions while the remedy is outstanding.

Is Level 2 home charging declared safe by the recall?

No. Volkswagen’s 2023 ID.4 guide describes AC charging, including Level 2 home charging, while the cited recall filing specifically says to avoid Level 3 DC charging. That distinction does not make every AC charger, location, or vehicle risk-free. Follow the 80% limit and parking precautions as well.

The Bottom Line

If your ID.4 has an open high-voltage battery recall, follow the notice for your VIN until an authorized Volkswagen dealer confirms the no-cost module replacement is complete: set the high-voltage battery limit to 80%, avoid Level 3 DC fast charging, park outdoors promptly after charging, and do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight. Transport Canada also directs owners to park away from other vehicles or structures. Check recall status by VIN; neither the 80% limit nor a different charger is a substitute for the repair or a guarantee of safety.
