For most Renault 5 E-Tech electric drivers, the best home solution is a professionally installed AC wallbox. Renault documents a 7.4 kW home charging point and an 11 kW maximum AC intake for the car. A standard or reinforced household socket can be used occasionally with the correct Mode 2 flexicharger, but it replenishes the battery much more slowly.
On a journey, use public AC when the car will be parked for a while and a compatible DC rapid charger for a short motorway stop. Renault quotes a 15–80% charge in about 30 minutes for the 52 kWh Renault 5 E-Tech on a 100 kW DC charger. The separate Renault 5 Turbo 3E specification lists 11 kW AC and up to 330 kW DC; its production-market manual and charger compatibility information should determine the final figures for your car.

Which Renault electric sports car are these instructions for?
The fully documented reference here is the Renault 5 E-Tech electric. Charging capability varies with battery size, trim, model year and country, so check the charging section of your vehicle’s manual and the identification label on the car before buying equipment. A charging post’s advertised output is not automatically the power your Renault can accept.

The Renault 5 E-Tech has an onboard AC charger rated up to 11 kW. Renault’s home-charging information describes a 7.4 kW AC wallbox as the practical residential installation. Public AC posts can be rated as high as 22 kW, but an 11 kW vehicle cannot draw more than 11 kW from one. A higher-rated post therefore does not shorten the AC session beyond the car’s own limit.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E
Renault’s 2025 technical specification for the performance-focused Renault 5 Turbo 3E lists an 11 kW AC onboard charger and DC charging of up to 330 kW. “Up to” is a peak capability, not a guaranteed session speed: the charger, battery temperature, state of charge, electrical installation and final-market software all affect the result. Use the final vehicle documentation supplied in your country for charge-time promises and approved equipment.
Charging levels and the cables you need
There are three practical ways to charge a Renault 5. They differ in electrical supply, connector, speed and where they make sense.
| Charging option | Power relevant to a Renault 5 E-Tech | Equipment and connector | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home AC wallbox | Renault documents a 7.4 kW home point; the car accepts up to 11 kW AC. | Installed AC charging unit and a Type 2 Mode 3 cable, unless the unit has a permanently attached cable. | Everyday home charging, usually while parked overnight or during the day. |
| Reinforced domestic socket | Renault publishes a 3.7 kW example. | Renault-compatible Mode 2 flexicharger connected to the correctly rated socket. | Occasional home charging when a wallbox is unavailable. |
| Standard domestic socket | Renault publishes a 2.3 kW example. | Mode 2 flexicharger; the circuit and socket must be suitable and inspected. | Fallback or emergency use, not the preferred daily arrangement. |
| Public AC post | Posts may advertise up to 22 kW, while the Renault 5 E-Tech is limited to 11 kW AC. | Usually a Type 2 Mode 3 cable; some posts have a tethered cable. | Longer stops such as work, shopping or overnight parking. |
| Public DC rapid charger | Renault quotes 100 kW for the 52 kWh Renault 5 E-Tech charging example; the Turbo 3E specification lists up to 330 kW DC. | Use the station’s tethered DC cable and the connector that matches your car and the station. | Shorter motorway or road-trip breaks. |
The Mode 3 cable is the normal physical cable for AC wallboxes and untethered public AC posts. A portable Mode 2 flexicharger contains control and safety electronics for a household outlet; it is not simply an extension lead. Do not substitute an ordinary extension cable, multi-socket adaptor or damaged EVSE.
How to set up everyday charging at home
1. Confirm the exact car and electrical requirements
Identify the Renault 5 version, battery, trim and country specification. Check whether the vehicle inlet and the proposed charger use the same connector standard, and ask an electrician to assess the supply, earthing, protective devices, cable route and available capacity. A wallbox rated above the car’s AC limit can still be installed for future flexibility, but it will not make this Renault draw more than its onboard charger allows.
2. Have a qualified installer fit the wallbox
For daily use, arrange a dedicated AC wallbox rather than relying on a general-purpose socket. Renault’s UK charging page describes a 7.4 kW home point and names Andersen EV as an approved installation partner for that market. Partner availability, installation terms, grants and electrical rules differ by country, so verify the current local offer and ensure the installer provides the certificates required by your utility or building authority.

A dedicated circuit lets the installer select appropriate protection and manage the sustained load safely. The wallbox location should allow the cable to reach the car without crossing a pedestrian path, being pinched by a door or lying where vehicles can drive over it. If the unit has load management, configure it to respect the property’s supply limit rather than assuming the car can always receive its full rating.
3. Use the Type 2 Mode 3 cable correctly
- Park so the charging cable is not stretched, trapped or exposed to moving traffic.
- Inspect the wallbox socket, cable ends and vehicle inlet for damage, water, corrosion or foreign material.
- Connect the Type 2 plug firmly to the wallbox and the Renault inlet, following the connector markings and the wallbox’s start procedure.
- Confirm that the vehicle and wallbox indicate an active session. The displayed power may be below the equipment rating because of the car’s 11 kW AC ceiling, battery state, temperature or site load.
- When finished, stop the session using the vehicle, wallbox or charging-network control provided. Unlock the vehicle before removing a locked connector, then replace the cable so its contacts stay clean and dry.
4. Use a household socket only as a fallback
If a wallbox is not available, connect the Renault-compatible Mode 2 flexicharger to a suitable standard or reinforced socket. Renault’s published examples are 2.3 kW from a standard socket and 3.7 kW from a reinforced socket, both substantially slower than wallbox charging. Have the circuit checked before repeated use, keep the control box and plug clear of standing water, and stop immediately if the socket, plug or cable becomes hot, discoloured or damaged.

Do not share the outlet with a high-load appliance, use an extension lead, or defeat the flexicharger’s protective functions. A household outlet may be acceptable for an occasional top-up but is a poor substitute for a dedicated EV circuit when the car is charged every day.
How long does a Renault 5 take to charge?
Charge time depends on the starting percentage, battery size, temperature, charging power and whether the car tapers power near a high state of charge. The figures below are the documented examples, not universal results for every Renault 5.
| Situation | Documented figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Home AC wallbox | 7.4 kW home point | A practical residential rate; the car’s maximum AC intake remains 11 kW. |
| Reinforced socket | 3.7 kW example | Useful for occasional charging, but slower than a wallbox. |
| Standard socket | 2.3 kW example | Fallback charging only; a large battery can require a long dwell. |
| 100 kW DC rapid charger, 52 kWh Renault 5 E-Tech | 15–80% in about 30 minutes | Renault’s quoted model-page result under its stated test conditions; actual sessions vary. |
Do not calculate a public AC session from the number printed on the post alone. A 22 kW post supplies three-phase equipment capable of that output, but the Renault 5 E-Tech’s 11 kW onboard charger controls the actual AC rate. DC charging bypasses the car’s AC onboard charger, yet the station and battery still determine how close the session gets to the advertised peak.

How to charge on a Renault road trip
1. Plan stops in the vehicle
Where fitted and supported in your market, use the built-in Google Maps trip planner. Renault says it can select charging points along the route and preheat the battery as the vehicle approaches a planned charger. Battery preconditioning can help the car accept DC power more quickly, particularly in cold weather, but it does not remove the need to check that the selected station is operating and compatible.
2. Start with a realistic range buffer
Set the first stop before the displayed range becomes uncomfortable. Wind, rain, cold temperatures, high speeds, steep terrain, roof loads and traffic can all increase consumption. Treat the dashboard estimate as a forecast, not a guarantee, and keep enough energy to reach an alternative station if the first site is busy, out of service or inaccessible.
3. Match the charger to the length of the stop
- Long stop: Choose public AC at a workplace, destination or overnight location. Bring a Type 2 Mode 3 cable if the post is untethered. An advertised 22 kW post will still be limited by the Renault 5 E-Tech’s 11 kW AC acceptance.
- Short motorway break: Choose a compatible DC rapid charger with a tethered cable. For the 52 kWh Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault quotes 15–80% in about 30 minutes on a 100 kW point.
- Unexpected detour: Prefer a station on the correct side of the route with a second nearby option. A slightly slower charger that is available is more useful than a faster one you cannot access.
4. Connect and verify the session
- Park within reach of the tethered DC cable or position the car so your Type 2 cable does not obstruct another bay.
- Check the connector and vehicle inlet before plugging in. Never connect if either is wet, corroded or contaminated.
- Follow the station’s order of operations: some networks require you to authenticate first, while others require the cable to be connected before payment or app authorisation.
- Confirm that the car shows charging and that the station has started billing. If the power is unexpectedly low, allow for battery temperature, a high starting state of charge or a shared site supply before moving to another bay.
- End the session when the trip planner’s target is reached, release the connector, close the vehicle’s charge flap and move the car promptly so the bay is available.
5. Choose a sensible stopping percentage
Rapid charging normally slows as the battery becomes fuller. For that reason, a planned 15–80% stop can be more time-efficient than repeatedly charging to 100% during a journey. Charge to 100% before departure when the extra range is useful and the vehicle guidance allows it, but do not make a full rapid charge the default at every stop. The trip planner’s target should determine when you leave.
What changes for the Renault 5 Turbo 3E?
The Turbo 3E is not just a higher-output version of the same charging promise. Its published 2025 technical specification lists 11 kW AC and up to 330 kW DC. That headline DC figure requires a station capable of supplying it and a battery able to accept it at that moment. Many chargers deliver less, and charging power normally changes throughout a session.
Turbo 3E owners should confirm the connector arrangement, approved charging networks, battery-preconditioning behavior and official 10–80% or 15–80% times in the final-market manual. Do not apply the Renault 5 E-Tech 52 kWh, 100 kW and 30-minute example to the Turbo 3E unless Renault publishes that exact configuration.

Safety checks before every connection
Renault’s user manual gives a direct warning: “In the event of the presence of water, signs of corrosion or foreign bodies in the charging cable connector or in the vehicle charging socket, do not charge the vehicle.” Treat that as a stop condition, not a suggestion.
- Keep plugs, the vehicle inlet and the wallbox socket clean and dry.
- Do not charge through a cracked housing, bent pin, frayed cable or loose wallbox socket.
- Never use an extension lead, travel adaptor or household multi-plug with the EV charger.
- Do not force a connector. Match the connector markings and use the release procedure in the vehicle and station instructions.
- If a plug, socket or cable becomes unusually hot, stop charging, isolate the equipment if safe and arrange an inspection.
- At public sites, keep the cable out of traffic lanes and report damaged hardware to the operator.
Costs and practical ownership considerations
The charging price depends on your local electricity tariff, public-network rate, connection fee, parking charge and any time-based or subscription pricing. A home wallbox normally adds installation and equipment cost but gives predictable access; a domestic socket avoids wallbox installation but charges slowly and places more importance on the condition and rating of the circuit. Public DC is usually priced for convenience and speed, so compare the network’s per-kilowatt-hour, per-minute and session fees before starting.
For a road trip, check whether the station requires an app, RFID card, contactless payment or account registration. Keep more than one payment method available, and save the location of an alternative charger before leaving a busy corridor. Availability shown in an app can change between planning and arrival.
Troubleshooting common charging problems
The car will not start charging at home
- Check that the wallbox has power and is not locked, scheduled or paused by a load-management setting.
- Unplug and inspect both ends for moisture, corrosion, debris or damage.
- Reconnect firmly and confirm that the vehicle inlet indicator and wallbox status agree.
- If the circuit breaker trips again, stop resetting it and have the installation inspected by a qualified electrician.
The session is slower than expected
- On AC, compare the power with the car’s 11 kW ceiling rather than the post’s 22 kW label.
- On DC, consider battery temperature, a high state of charge, a shared or limited site supply and another vehicle using the same equipment.
- Allow the built-in planner to preheat the battery when it supports that function, and leave once the route target is met instead of waiting for the taper to reach 100%.
The public charger is unavailable
End the attempt safely, report the fault through the operator’s channel and navigate to the preselected alternative. Do not remain in a charging bay while troubleshooting a connector that will not lock or a station that has not authorised the session.

A simple charging routine
- At home, plug into the wallbox whenever convenient and leave the car ready for the next trip.
- Use the Mode 2 flexicharger only when a suitable wallbox or public post is unavailable.
- Before every session, inspect the connector and inlet and reject any wet, corroded or contaminated equipment.
- For travel, plan in the car, keep a range buffer and identify an alternative station.
- Use public AC for long parking and DC for short stops, remembering that the vehicle’s acceptance limit matters more than the post’s headline rating.
- Stop rapid charging at the planner’s target unless a full battery is genuinely needed for the next leg.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I charge a Renault 5 from a normal household plug?
Yes, as an occasional fallback, using a Renault-compatible Mode 2 flexicharger and a suitable socket. Renault publishes a 2.3 kW standard-socket example and a 3.7 kW reinforced-socket example; both are much slower than a dedicated wallbox.

What cable should I carry for a Renault 5?
Carry a Type 2 Mode 3 cable for untethered home wallboxes and public AC posts. A Mode 2 flexicharger is a separate portable EVSE for occasional household-socket charging; it should not be replaced with an ordinary extension lead.
Does a 22 kW public AC charger charge the Renault 5 at 22 kW?
No. Public equipment may be rated up to 22 kW, but the Renault 5 E-Tech is documented to accept up to 11 kW AC, so the car sets the AC limit.
Is the quoted 30-minute rapid-charge time guaranteed?
No. Renault’s 15–80% in about 30 minutes figure applies to the 52 kWh Renault 5 E-Tech on a 100 kW DC point. Battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger condition and site power can change the result.
