What home charging actually does
Home charging for a Porsche electric car is AC charging. Electricity passes through three limits before it reaches the battery:

- The property’s electrical supply: the available circuit, outlet, phase arrangement and local code determine how much power can be delivered safely.
- The EVSE: the Porsche Mobile Charger, Mobile Charger Connect or Porsche Wallbox controls and communicates the AC supply to the vehicle. EVSE is the charging equipment; it is not the same thing as the car’s onboard charger.
- The onboard charger: the charger built into the Porsche converts AC electricity for the battery and sets the vehicle’s maximum AC intake.
The actual rate is therefore the lowest limit in the chain. A high-rated wallbox does not override a lower-rated vehicle charger, and an advertised EVSE maximum is not a guarantee that every house or every Porsche can deliver it.

- Model and model year. Availability and compatibility can change between versions and markets.
- Battery and charging options. The battery specification affects the energy that must be replenished, while the onboard AC-charger option controls the maximum home AC rate.
- Onboard AC rating. Porsche specifically warns that a car equipped with an 11 kW onboard charger will not charge faster when connected to a 22 kW wallbox.
- Connector and cable requirements. Connector standards and supplied cables vary by country and equipment. Confirm the connector for your car and the cable supplied with the chosen Porsche charger.
Do not select a charger solely from the vehicle’s headline DC-fast-charging specification. That figure describes a different charging system and does not tell you what the car can accept from an AC circuit at home.

These are maximum equipment ratings, not promises of a particular charging speed. The car, circuit and local installation must all support the selected output.
11 kW or 22 kW: which should you install?
When an 11 kW setup is the sensible choice
An 11 kW onboard charger makes an 11 kW-capable home setup the practical ceiling for AC charging. Porsche’s 2019 Newsroom USA information described an 11 kW maximum home AC rate and about nine hours for a full charge with the stated Taycan 11 kW onboard charger. That figure is a Porsche example, not a universal promise: starting state of charge, battery version, temperature, charging losses and the available supply affect the result.

Choose the portable Porsche Mobile Charger when flexibility matters and the property has a suitable outlet. Choose a fixed wallbox at an 11 kW-capable installation when you want a dedicated parking-space connection without carrying the EVSE.

When 22 kW equipment can be useful
A 22 kW Porsche Wallbox or Mobile Charger Connect can provide a higher AC ceiling only when the vehicle has a compatible 22 kW onboard charger and the property can supply the required power. Porsche’s Ask guidance is explicit: installing a 22 kW wallbox does not increase charging speed for a Porsche with an 11 kW onboard charger.
There can still be reasons to buy 22 kW equipment, such as preparing for a compatible vehicle in the future or using a portable unit at properties that support its full output. Treat that as an equipment and property decision, not as a way to upgrade an 11 kW car without changing the car itself.
A simple buying rule
- If the car’s onboard AC charger is 11 kW, an 11 kW installation is sufficient for the vehicle’s maximum home AC rate.
- If the car and property both support 22 kW, 22 kW equipment can reduce AC charging time compared with 11 kW.
- If either the car or the property is limited to 11 kW, the 22 kW label on the wallbox will not produce 22 kW at the battery.
What electrical work a home installation needs
A fixed Porsche Wallbox or a higher-power circuit is not a plug-and-play household project. Porsche recommends a property assessment and professional commissioning. Ask Porsche Installation Services or a licensed electrician to evaluate:

- The service capacity available to the home and the intended charging location.
- The route from the electrical panel to the garage, carport or driveway.
- The circuit, protective equipment, isolation and earthing arrangements required by local electrical code.
- Whether the available phase supply supports the selected 11 kW or 22 kW operating mode.
- The outlet type and condition if you are using a portable charger.
- How the installation will be tested, labelled and commissioned before regular use.
The electrician should confirm the installed operating limit rather than simply fitting a device with a higher nameplate rating. If the property cannot support the desired output, the safe result is a lower configured rate or a change to the electrical service—not an improvised adapter or extension arrangement.

Step-by-step: setting up Porsche home charging
- Record the vehicle specification. Write down the exact model, model year, battery version and onboard AC-charger rating. If the rating is unclear, ask Porsche before buying equipment.
- Inspect the proposed charging location. Decide where the car will remain parked, how the cable will reach it, and whether the location is protected from traffic, water exposure and accidental cable damage.
- Confirm the connector and supply. Match the connector and cable to the car and verify the property’s outlet, phase supply and permitted current. Never assume a standard household socket can deliver an advertised maximum.
- Select portable or fixed equipment. Use the Porsche Mobile Charger for portable, up-to-11 kW charging; consider Mobile Charger Connect when you need portable equipment listed by Porsche at up to 22 kW AC and a display; choose Porsche Wallbox for a permanent charging point.
- Arrange the assessment. Have Porsche Installation Services or a licensed electrician inspect the property, calculate the load, specify protection and confirm the installation design.
- Install and commission the circuit. The installer should fit the approved circuit and equipment, perform the required electrical tests, set the permitted output and provide operating instructions.
- Connect the car. Park within cable reach, inspect the connector and cable for damage, connect the EVSE to the approved outlet or wallbox, and then connect the vehicle according to the Porsche manual.
- Verify the session. Check the vehicle display or charger status for a charging indication. If the indicated power is below the equipment rating, the limiting factor may be the car’s onboard charger, the configured circuit or the supply.
- Set a schedule if supported. Use the vehicle controls or My Porsche app to schedule charging overnight where that function is available in your market and with your equipment.
How long does overnight charging take?
Charging time is determined by the energy required, not simply by the charger’s label. A car arriving home with a low state of charge needs more energy than one returning with half its usable battery remaining. The rate can also be reduced by the onboard charger, the configured circuit or the property’s supply.
Porsche’s published examples illustrate the range:
- A Porsche Newsroom USA article from 2019 described about nine hours for a full charge at 11 kW with the stated Taycan 11 kW onboard charger.
- Porsche’s current shop listing for Mobile Charger Connect states up to 22 kW AC and a full charge in up to five hours under ideal conditions. That is a product-level claim under stated ideal conditions; your vehicle and property may not support that output.
Those figures should not be read as a guaranteed timer for every Taycan or every charging session. A partial overnight refill will normally finish sooner than a full charge, while a lower configured rate will take longer. The most reliable routine is to plug in when parked, set the desired departure time or charging window where supported, and let the vehicle manage the session.

A portable Porsche charger can operate only from an outlet and circuit that Porsche and local electrical rules permit for that equipment. A normal household socket may have a lower allowable continuous load than the charger’s headline rating, and the outlet condition, wiring and circuit protection matter. The socket does not become an 11 kW or 22 kW supply merely because the EVSE can advertise those values.

Before using a household outlet regularly:
- Have the outlet and circuit checked by a qualified electrician.
- Use the Porsche-specified cable and any required protective equipment.
- Do not use damaged outlets, loose connections, improvised adapters or extension leads.
- Stop charging if the plug, socket or cable becomes unusually hot, discoloured or damaged.
- Accept that the permitted rate may be lower than 11 kW and that charging will take longer.
If you want predictable overnight charging, a dedicated circuit and properly commissioned wallbox or portable-charger outlet are safer and easier to verify than relying on an unknown general-purpose socket.
Do not confuse home AC charging with public DC fast charging
Porsche’s launch information for the Taycan cited an 800-volt system, up to 270 kW peak DC charging and 22.5 minutes for a 5–80 percent state-of-charge session with Performance Battery Plus under ideal conditions. Those figures describe compatible public DC fast charging, not a normal home AC installation.
At home, the EVSE supplies AC and the onboard charger governs the conversion and intake rate. A car can therefore advertise very high DC capability while charging overnight at 11 kW AC, or at a lower rate if the property or equipment is limited. Use the home charger’s AC rating and the vehicle’s onboard AC specification when planning an overnight session.
Scheduling and everyday operation
Schedule around departure
Where the vehicle and market support it, use the Porsche controls or My Porsche app to set a charging schedule. Scheduling can keep the car connected while limiting the active charging window to the hours you choose. Confirm that the schedule is enabled and that the time zone, departure time and cable connection are correct.

Plug in consistently
For routine use, connect the car after parking rather than waiting until the battery is nearly empty. A consistent plug-in habit gives the vehicle more time to complete a partial refill and reduces pressure to rely on public fast charging for ordinary travel.
Check status before leaving
Look at the vehicle or EVSE status before departure. If charging has not started, check that the connector is fully seated, the circuit has power, no protective device has tripped and no schedule is preventing an immediate session.
Troubleshooting: symptom, likely limit and response

Safety and installation checks
- Use only Porsche equipment and cables that are approved for your vehicle and market.
- Keep the connector and outlet clean, dry and free from visible damage.
- Do not modify the EVSE, bypass protective devices or defeat a fault indication.
- Keep the cable routed so it cannot be crushed by the vehicle, caught by a door or create a trip hazard.
- Do not share a high-power charging circuit with equipment that could overload it unless the installation was designed and approved for that load.
- Retain the installation documentation and commissioning information for future troubleshooting or a home sale.
How to choose between portable and fixed charging
Choose the Porsche Mobile Charger when flexibility is the priority
The portable unit is suited to owners who need to charge at more than one approved location or want to carry the EVSE with the car. Its Porsche-stated maximum is up to 11 kW, but the outlet and supply determine the rate at each location.
Choose Mobile Charger Connect when you need portable, higher-rated hardware
Mobile Charger Connect is listed by Porsche’s current shop at up to 22 kW AC and includes a display-oriented portable design. It makes sense only when the car and the property can use that capability; an 11 kW onboard charger remains the limiting factor.
Choose Porsche Wallbox for a dedicated parking space
A Wallbox keeps the charging point installed at home and is designed for a dedicated garage or driveway location. The stated maximum is up to 22 kW, but installation, commissioning and site capacity are mandatory parts of the purchase decision.
What to verify before signing off the installation
Ask for a clear answer to each question below:
- What is the Porsche’s onboard AC-charger rating?
- What output will the installed circuit permit continuously?
- Which connector and cable are correct for this model and country?
- Is the outlet or wallbox on a dedicated, protected circuit?
- Which charging schedules are supported by the vehicle and My Porsche app?
- What status light or display confirms a normal session?
- Who should be called if the charger trips, overheats or stops communicating?
Once those answers match the vehicle, EVSE and property, overnight home charging is straightforward: connect the Porsche to the approved AC equipment, set a schedule if desired, and allow the onboard charger to replenish the battery at the rate the complete installation can safely provide.
