Charging a battery-electric heavy-duty truck on a long-haul route is a scheduling and infrastructure exercise, not simply a matter of finding the highest-rated plug. Start with the truck’s exact battery and inlet configuration, map truck-accessible charging sites against the legal driving and rest plan, and reserve enough energy and time for weather, payload, traffic and charger variability. In Europe, CCS remains the current direct-current standard while the higher-power Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is being introduced for heavy-duty corridors. MCS can fit a substantial recharge into a scheduled rest break, but no published range, power rating or demonstration guarantees the result for every truck or route.
The evidence and rollout figures in this guide are primarily European. Infrastructure, driving-time rules and vehicle availability differ elsewhere, so treat the process as a framework and verify the regulations and live network for the country in which the truck operates.

What has to be true for a long-haul electric route to work
A route is feasible only when five pieces line up:
- The truck can accept the connector and charging power at the planned stop.
- The site is designed for heavy vehicles, with suitable entry, turning space, parking and operating access.
- The charging session fits the truck’s energy requirement and the driver’s permitted duty and rest schedule.
- The grid connection and charger can deliver useful power for the vehicle’s actual charge curve, rather than merely advertising a peak rating.
- A contingency exists if the selected point is occupied, offline or slower than expected.
Current European Commission reporting puts the typical range of current long-haul battery-electric trucks at around 500 km, while demonstration runs have reached 800 km or more. Those figures describe a broad technology range, not a promise for a particular model. Payload, speed, terrain, temperature, wind, traffic, auxiliary loads and the usable battery buffer all change consumption. Build the route from the truck’s certified and fleet-observed data, then use published range as a plausibility check.

The European Commission’s 2025 report describes Combined Charging System (CCS) as the current EU DC charging standard. MCS is a separate, higher-power system intended for heavy-duty vehicles and capable of more than 1 MW. A battery-electric truck is not automatically an MCS truck: the inlet, onboard electronics, software and vehicle option package must all support it.

| Charging system | Where it fits | What to verify | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCS DC | Existing compatible public and private DC infrastructure; useful where a truck-rated site and the vehicle’s charging option support it. | Connector type, truck-rated access, maximum vehicle input, site power, cable reach and session authentication. | A universal charging time or that a passenger-car CCS site can accommodate an articulated truck. |
| MCS | High-power charging on long-distance heavy-duty corridors, potentially during a scheduled 30-to-45-minute rest. | MCS inlet on the exact truck, station compatibility, delivered power, reservation or queue rules, parking geometry and live status. | That every battery-electric truck can use MCS, or that every MCS site is open and available on a given day. |
| Lower-power depot or private charging | Overnight, loading, unloading and other long dwell periods where rapid en-route charging is unnecessary. | Available dwell time, electrical capacity, transformer and connection lead time, load management and simultaneous-vehicle demand. | A universal cost, installation time or power requirement for every depot. |
Compare the useful energy delivered in the time available, not the number printed on the charger cabinet. A charger’s maximum rating may be reached only briefly, and the truck’s battery-management system can taper power as the state of charge rises. Ask the operator or manufacturer for the supported power range and expected charge curve for the specific truck.
A route-planning procedure that works in practice
1. Freeze the truck configuration before planning stops
Record the tractor and trailer combination, battery capacity and usable-energy limits, charging inlet, optional charging hardware, maximum accepted CCS and MCS power, software requirements and any temperature or state-of-charge conditions that restrict charging. Fleet specifications can vary by model, market and option package. Do not infer MCS capability from the truck merely being battery-electric.
Use the operating configuration that will actually run the route. A lighter tractor, a different trailer, winter tires or a refrigerated load can change consumption enough to move a planned stop. Keep the vehicle identification and configuration attached to the route plan so a substitute truck is checked rather than assumed equivalent.
2. Convert the timetable into energy windows
Lay out driving periods, loading and unloading, border or terminal delays, mandated breaks and overnight dwell. Then mark where the truck can charge without creating a new delay. A Scania long-haul example describes 4.5 hours of driving followed by a required 45-minute rest, then further driving; its account says MCS can recharge the battery to as much as 80% during that break. That is a manufacturer scenario, not a guaranteed result.
Driving-time and rest rules depend on the jurisdictions and the trip. Confirm the rules that apply to the actual route and do not shorten a required rest merely because charging finishes early. If charging takes place at a depot or customer site, ensure the location is legally and operationally suitable for the break rather than treating any parked vehicle as a compliant rest arrangement.
3. Map stops that a heavy truck can physically use
For every candidate site, check the current operator listing and confirm:

- Truck and trailer access from the public road, including height, weight, turning radius and one-way restrictions.
- Parking bay length, approach angle, cable reach and whether another trailer blocks the charging position.
- Connector type and whether the bay is explicitly rated for heavy-duty vehicles.
- Delivered power, number of dispensers, queue or reservation process and payment or fleet-account requirements.
- Opening hours, security, toilet and rest facilities, and any access controls.
- Live operational status and a telephone or dispatch escalation path.
A listing for a passenger-car charging point proves none of these truck requirements. A route planner should reject a site if an articulated combination cannot enter, align, charge and leave without unsafe reversing or an illegal stop.
4. Calculate consumption with a margin and a fallback
Estimate energy from the truck’s actual loaded consumption on comparable terrain and weather. Include auxiliary systems, traffic, detours, elevation, wind and a reserve for a closed site or queue. The reserve is an operational decision, not a universal percentage: a route through sparse infrastructure needs more protection than a corridor with several compatible sites.
Do not plan to arrive at a charger with the battery at its absolute lower limit. Identify a second compatible stop or a safe recovery location before dispatch. If no fallback exists, the route has a single-point infrastructure failure and should not be released without a confirmed status check and escalation plan.
5. Assign charging between depot and corridor stops
HoLa’s planning work recommends slower charging mainly at depots and private parking, with MCS deployed along long-distance axes. That arrangement uses long dwell periods for inexpensive or less time-sensitive energy and reserves high-power public capacity for the part of the trip where a rapid turnaround matters.
At the depot, determine how many trucks may charge simultaneously, whether the utility connection can support the load, how demand will be managed and what happens during a power outage. At a public corridor site, account for queue risk and the possibility that several trucks arrive after the same traffic disruption. A mixed plan is usually more resilient than relying entirely on public or entirely on depot charging.

6. Re-check live conditions before departure
Public networks, commissioned sites, access rules and truck compatibility change. Confirm each stop shortly before departure, and again at the dispatch handoff if the route is long. A rollout announcement is not a live guarantee that a particular dispenser is available, that the site remains open or that a substitute truck can use it.

How MCS fits a driver’s rest break
MCS is intended to make a high-energy en-route session compatible with a normal heavy-truck schedule. The practical question is not “How fast is the charger?” but “How much usable energy can this truck receive during the legally available dwell?”
- Before the shift, identify the target state of charge on arrival and the minimum state of charge needed to reach the next confirmed stop.
- Arrive with enough reserve to queue briefly or move to the fallback bay; do not depend on an exact arrival percentage.
- Position the truck according to the site’s marked procedure, apply the parking brake and follow the operator’s authentication and safety instructions.
- Start the session and verify that the truck, not just the dispenser, reports charging power and an expected completion estimate.
- Use the full permitted break for rest and operational checks. If the truck reaches the target early, do not depart until the legally required rest is complete.
- Before leaving, confirm connector release, close covers, inspect the cable and record delivered energy, start and end times and any derating or interruption.
Demonstrations reported at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 described vehicles reaching 80% or full during scheduled 30-to-45-minute rest breaks. Vehicle, battery, charger, ambient conditions and charge curve determine whether a particular session matches that result. Treat the demonstration as evidence that the operating pattern is technically possible, not as a service-level promise.
What the European infrastructure numbers mean
The public network is expanding, but it is not yet universal. Fraunhofer ISI reported the opening of a public MCS point at Lipperland Süd on Germany’s A2 on 29 September 2025, with power up to 1.2 MW. Milence has reported MCS deployment at European heavy-duty charging hubs. These examples show corridor development; they are not a complete route map.

Several forecasts use different assumptions and should not be merged:
| Figure | Source and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1.2 MW | Fraunhofer ISI report on the Lipperland Süd opening, 29 September 2025 | Specification of that particular public MCS point when it opened. |
| At least 1,000 public MCS points by 2030; about 2,000 under rapid adoption and 45-minute site-occupation assumptions | HoLa/Fraunhofer ISI findings covering work through 2023 | A project planning estimate tied to stated adoption and dwell assumptions. |
| About 35,000 publicly accessible MCS fast-charging points by 2030 | Estimate attributed to VDA in an IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 release | An industry estimate for Europe, not a live count or a guarantee of geographic distribution. |
| 730 EU points above 350 kW dedicated to heavy-duty commercial vehicles | IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 release | A dated event figure; verify current availability before dispatch. |
These estimates differ because they count different power thresholds, dates and planning scenarios. A dispatcher should use the live site list and the truck’s supported system, not a continent-wide forecast, to approve a trip.
How to compare charging options
| Decision factor | Depot or private charging | Public corridor charging |
|---|---|---|
| Dwell time | Best when trucks remain parked overnight or during loading. | Designed for a scheduled en-route stop with limited dwell. |
| Access | Controlled for the fleet, but unusable if the truck is diverted. | Potentially useful across routes, subject to queues, authentication and opening conditions. |
| Power planning | Requires utility connection, transformers, load management and parking capacity. | Depends on the site’s delivered power and network congestion. |
| Operational resilience | Can provide predictable energy but needs backup for outages. | Benefits from corridor coverage but has occupancy and availability risk. |
| Best comparison metric | Energy added during the planned dwell and number of trucks served. | Energy added before the next duty window, including detour and queue time. |
Universal prices and universal charging times are not established by the available evidence. Obtain a fleet tariff, connection quote or site-specific rate directly from the relevant operator, and model demand charges or access fees where they apply.

Common failure modes and the correct response
The truck cannot start the session
Check that the inlet and connector match, the truck is in the correct charging mode, authentication succeeded and the bay is assigned to the right dispenser. If the truck lacks the required MCS hardware, move to the pre-approved CCS or fallback site rather than improvising with an incompatible adapter.

Peak power is not continuous power. Battery state of charge, temperature, software limits, shared cabinets, grid constraints and the station’s charge curve can all reduce delivery. Record the observed power and contact dispatch if the remaining duty window is threatened. A second compatible stop may be safer than waiting for a tapering session to reach an arbitrary percentage.
The site is occupied, closed or inaccessible
Use the live status check and the fallback identified during planning. Do not queue on a public road, block a passenger-car bay or enter a site where the turning path is unsafe. Report the outage or access problem so future route plans do not repeat the failure.
Weather or payload consumes more energy than forecast
Reduce speed only within the operator’s safe and legal policy, limit unnecessary auxiliary loads, and divert to the planned contingency before the reserve is exhausted. Update the fleet’s consumption model with the trip data; a range estimate that ignores seasonal and payload effects will remain unreliable.
A substitute vehicle arrives at the dispatch yard
Re-run the configuration check. Confirm battery, inlet, maximum charging power and software support, then recalculate the stops. If the replacement truck cannot use the planned MCS site, release a CCS-compatible route or assign a different vehicle.
Depot, grid and parking requirements
High-power truck charging is also a civil and electrical project. HoLa recommends early planning for grid connections and parking capacity and refreshing infrastructure estimates as adoption and usage data change. A depot plan should therefore cover:

Lower-power overnight charging can reduce the need for extreme site power, while MCS on a corridor can reduce route dwell. The right balance depends on duty cycles, parking time and the utility connection available at each location.
Safety, records and dispatch control
Follow the truck, charger and site operator’s safety instructions. Drivers should not handle damaged connectors, bypass interlocks or remain in a vehicle that the site rules require them to leave. Keep emergency contacts and the operator’s fault procedure in the cab and in dispatch records.
For each session, record the vehicle, site, connector, start and end time, energy delivered, peak and average power, state of charge, interruptions, queue time and any detour. Over several trips, these records reveal whether a site’s advertised capability is useful for the fleet’s actual trucks. They also provide evidence for revising reserve levels, selecting fallback stops and sizing depot infrastructure.
When will MCS become a real-world option?
MCS is already being demonstrated and deployed on European heavy-duty corridors, but “available” is route-specific. The Fraunhofer Lipperland Süd opening and Milence hub deployments show public examples, while IAA demonstrations reported interoperable megawatt charging across trucks from different manufacturers. Anja van Niersen of Milence said at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 that MCS was ready to support the next phase of electric long-haul transport; that statement describes the technology and demonstration context, not guaranteed coverage for every route.
For a fleet, MCS becomes a real operating option when a specific truck, a specific site and a specific duty cycle have all been verified. Until then, retain a CCS or depot-based alternative and do not publish a timetable that depends on an unconfirmed point.
